I broke my puller in exactly the same way... but it wasn't a "top quality" puller... so I went to Kragen and rented a "real" one. And it STILL took a wrench on the end of the rotor at 90 degrees (to keep it from turning) and had the wrench locking onto a vertical piece of wood (my third hand) and that allowed me to put a "cheater" tube on the breaker bar on the puller and kept turning. Those two pillows under the puller came in real handy and caught the rotor when it popped of, sounding like a gun shot !

Hot weather riding, engine temp
mbrood replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I was looking for a difference in parts for the temperature sender and the temperature switch between an 84 and an 86... they seem to show the SAME temperature sender but a whole different temperature switch... yet BOTH bike manuals say the switch kicks the fan on at 105C and kicks back off at 98C. Looking at the Yamaha parts break-down: 1984... 11H-82560-00-00 THERMO SWITCH ASSEMBLY ($56.80 US price) 11H-83591-00-00 THERMO UNIT ($24.70 US price THIS is the temperature sensor for the gauge) 1986 2EL-82560-00-00 THERMOSWITCH ASSEMBLY superseded with # 3LN-82560-01-00 ($23.27 US price) 11H-83591-00-00 THERMO UNIT ($24.70 US price THIS is the temperature sensor for the gauge, same item as above) Anybody know the difference? -

84 Carbs Question
mbrood replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Not sure what was actually installed but the Yamaha parts catalog shows the 83 with the 42.5 and the 84 through 93 with the 37.5. -
Saw this reseach on another section and it sure looked good... http://www.gdlcycles.com/general/PU/PU-12-94470--1.jpg EMGO part number 12-94470 listed several places at $20 This might be a real thing... Has anybody TOUCHED one to see about quality The company DOES show it as a direct replacement item for the 83-93 Venture.

Attn FL riders...or aint this a kick in da pants!!
mbrood replied to 1BigDog's topic in Watering Hole
Sure seems like bull to me. They don't require certification for 4 wheels? I'll bet you some Legislature person has a brother or cousin that runs a motorcycle training class... I would think this can't be imposed without several laws being shoved.. Isn't this discrimination? And what evidence do they show that classes greatly increase safety? It brings a lot of training to bear but 10 hours on the road and 5 hours class? That's nuts. And yeah, I have a friend that took a local course (on his own) and was so tickled that he wanted to show his wife... and promptly dumped it... over confident... His wife said, "And you paid somebody to learn how to do that?" -
Solenoids DO go bad... check the wiring... mine had one side of the solenoid ALWAYS hot and the switch grounded the other... so... ground the other...

What gear am I in again?
mbrood replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Since you had the sending unit off... did you note the spring loaded brass pin that rotates across the terminals? The starts out with a round head and wears down over time. You are basically grounding a terminal on the sending unit through that pin to show the gear position that then goes to the CMS. On the harness is the 6 wire connector contacts in good shape? You can test the dash panel by disconecting the 6 wire connector and ground each pin, watching the dash... Neutral sky blue 1st white 2nd pink 3rd yellow/white 4th blue/white 5th red/white then you can do a resistance check on the sender by checking for a solid short on the corresponding wire in each gear. -
Throttle cable fitting.
mbrood replied to woz111's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No, we can't help you... you've been a bad boy buying that innocent parts bike and actually trying to put her back together and on the road... (evil grin!). Lube the pulley and always test the cable pull/pull so you don't get binding or have to go in there again. http://bergall.org/temp/venture/throttlecable.jpg -
The stock is a three piece plastic "bumper"... See ebay item # 220247208821 The upgrade (with the grill work on the side and back and lights all over) is a much classier option, but they sure don't show up very often... no markings on mine... probably went by "VentureLine Accessories" from the dealer and probably made by Markland or... Known as saddlebag guard or saddlebag bumper. (although the metal crash bars around the lower trunks are sometimes called that too.) http://bergall.org/temp/venture/taillight.jpg

Used to do this with a Kawasaki... until I launched the muffler packing out the back. Let's just say it surprised them... and me. Repair wasn't cheap.

kill switch problem
mbrood replied to Wizard765's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
You probably just heard the fuel pump relay kick in when the switch finally activated. probably time to lube the switch... WD40 ain't the answer. -
There are some "different" boards out there but most have their own brake pedal mounted on the board frame and their own brake linkage rod. If so, you will need the original, pedal and linkage as well as the pegs. http://parts.yamaha-motor.com/partimage.gifx?d=43810,2,0

I was checking the general tech section... and saw a rather routine sounding "trick" for we height challenged riders... lower the front forks by 1"... but it was adressed to the 2nd gen... They simply loosen the triple tree clamps (after removing tons of stuff to get there) and slide the fork tubes up and tighten her back down. Anybody done this on a 1st gen? Clearance issues? I sure hope it's that easy... it would be a wonderful help to my bike leaning SO far over on the side stand after upgrading to progressive front springs! And yeah, I'm a little low at the inseam.

Tire Valve Stems
mbrood replied to FROG MAN's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Great tip, Cutty. Could they make it just a tad tougher to take a simple tire pressure check? Not all gas station air hoses are nice to use on these... -
Back in 1970, my mom got a "deal" on a fairly new 1968 Grand Prix... what a "deal". As a senior in high school, I was EVER so tickled. That thing would pin you to the seat and was just TOO much fun... until you looked at the gas gauge. Yes, you COULD punch the pedal and watch the gas gauge go lower although you REALLY had no business watching the gauge... telephone poles started sliding by awful fast. A friend tried to tell me the gas was moving to the back of the tank, making the gauge read lower... except it never "came back"... you could empty a tank real quick. I put a vacuum gauge below the dash and if you treated it with "kindness" and kept that nasty vacuum gauge in reasonable limits, you could get "reasonable gas mileage". Open up the four barrel and all bets were off... Judicious use of that throttle REALLY made a difference on a young kid's available money! But every once in a while...

Be sure and take it EASY for the first 100 miles or so as you scrub off the slick surface of a new tire... some can feel like driving on ice for a bit... no sense getting "eager" and have her get away from you.

Jumps out of 2nd gear
mbrood replied to blueblood's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Blueblood... for a while I will have the USER manual available for download off my site... this is for the 83 so might be handy for ya... http://bergall.org/temp/venture/pdf/ 6.6meg but still... Thanks go out to Rick Smith... Mike -
I know the starter switch isn't TOO difficult but it IS a tedious group of little parts... but I rather doubt the switch... could be, but I haven't seen this too much at all. On the roadside... one LITTLE wire on the solenoid (toward the rear of the solenoid on my bike) is wired HOT directly to the HOT (and HEAVY) lug on the solenoid... the other small termnal can be grounded with a short piece of wire. This bypasses ALL safety sensor so you BETTER be in neutral as she's GOING to turn over! here's the basics...
