no spark to front cylinders any ideals?
mbrood replied to a topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I think you missed something on those readings... from each spark plug cap to the ignition fuse should be about 23 K Ohms... 10 K for the spark plug cap internal resistor and about 13 K Ohms for the coil... Probably the MOST common cause for ignition woes on a "new to me" bike is corrosion at the connectors at the TCI and at the pick-up coil connection near the left frame downtube behind the left side cover. These REALLY need to be cleaned and some dialectric grease applied to KEEP them clean. -
This guy figured it was time to clean up the old, traditional motorcycle wheel... and did it in spades! Although I'd prefer some suspension springs somewhere... (warning... 7 meg mpg file) http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/hubless.wmv

With the race cars, I don't believe it's a choice... you CAN'T have compressed AIR in the pits... nowhere near the fuels and the cars... hot engines, exotic fuel and an "oxygen source" just isn't allowed... so nitrogen is a natural. There are other issues for regular cars and trucks but on the race course it is all about safety.

My bike always needed about 1/2 choke to start and after about 30 seconds I could back it off to about 1/4 and another 30 seconds or so I could remove all choke. A different problem made me pull the carbs and do a full cleaning. The FINE gas jets (in the jet block) looked fully clogged but I guess there was SOME fuel flow... but after a complete cleaning it REALLY doesn't want any choke unless it's a real cold morning. The lower manifold boots are odd, they ALL crack in the lower section, but that lower half of the rubber has a metal housing inside and only the top half is just rubber and that part seldom shows cracking, but CAN be sealed with several sealants. And yeah, the lower manifold clamp rings stretch and after... oh... 20 years or so... could stand to be replaced. I bought new clamp rings mainly because I was "in there" and didn't want to be in there for many years to come. Although I would swear the previous owner did nothing but put in gas and oil... it must have been the guy before that rounded off all the bolts and screws! Although Seafoam is regularly recommended, I REALLY think it's mainly for the cleaning effect it has on the fine gas jet and that thing needs all the help it can get.

Most large "towing" mirrors come with a fairly universal mount so you can easily drill some LARGE holes in your fairing for the bolts. You may need to use molly bolts to secure the lower bracket into the radiator. But they should be real solid by then. Then you can copy and print a few of our fabulous 1st Gen bikes from the profiles... then, very carefully cut them out. Now, use some rubber cement, glue them near the bottom of the glass in the mirror. Now everytime you glance down... there we are... Simple... Now you are happy and we can sit back, eating our meal and enjoying a favorite drink wondering what's keeping you. Later we will explain that woosh sound you often hear when you are riding with us...

I've always found that paint scheme to be very effective in traffic... folks stay a bit further back and away on the side and as you approach traffic, they seem to merge to the right and give you room to go by... Gee... you think black -n- white looks "interesting" in the rear view mirror of folks? That and a gold and black helmet and folks just peel out of the way. I rode one for a while and thought, MAN, these people are aweful appreciative of a motorcycle in their midst... and then it dawned on me... Seriously, that's a nice looking paint job.

problems with turn lihts
mbrood replied to Raiki's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If the fuse is good, you might "cycle" the emergency flasher switch a few times to (a) see that they work and (b) see if that clears it up. If you pull the front, right turn signal you can get to the connector for that switch... could be it needs some cleaning and dioalectric grease applied. Also a dandy place to check voltages. http://bergall.org/temp/venture/hazard.jpg -

Vmax engine for my 1985
mbrood replied to GaryZ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe the VMAX came out in 1985... after the second gear issue was resolved in the Venture. The frame wiring should support the 85-89 VMAX ignitor and pickup plugs? If he's dropping in the whole VMAX engine, the rotor and pickups are already matched... then you just have to use the correct ignitor unit... to match the VMAX and existing Venture wiring harness... ignitor unit 85 VMAX 1FK-82305-10-0 85 Venture 41R-82305-11-00 The pressure sensor's the same though. Isn't there a problem with the VMAX carb assembly sitting too tall? -
Other than having to rebalance the tire and change batteries (?) I would want a "trip point" alarm. These bikes have enough guages and monitors but I rather love the red "alarm" light to draw my attention, then the gauges tell me the extent.. The idea has merit, especially for heavier bikes, but the ability to set a "trip point" would be the selling factor for me.

84 VR Regulator
mbrood replied to jb1016's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I believe the brown wire is the regulation feedback line. When the ignition switch is on, the red wire is routed through the ignition switch and runs back to the regulator on the brown. This is the "raw voltage" that the regulator senses. It shunts off everything on the red wire above 14.5 volts into the regulator which disapates to the heatsink body. This brown line (from the red - through the ignition switch) then feeds the ignition fuse. http://bergall.org/temp/venture/electrical1.jpg http://bergall.org/temp/venture/electrical2.jpg -
Parts compatability

The headlight frame changed between 85 and 86 but from 83-93, I believe the windshield mounts are all the same... different cosmetic face trim but the windshield mounts aren't. -

coolant bypass valve
mbrood replied to Indyventure's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
There's a slash mark on the housing at the 2 O'Clock position. Align OFF to this for normal operation, ON to drain the system (bypassing the thermostat) -
Ah... another "VentureLine" custom option. A metal "tub" shaped item about 4 inches long that fit over the outside upper "corner" of the fairing... out on the far edges. Pretty rare and pretty expensive when they appear. I would call them an edge protector. http://www.bergall.org/temp/venture/edge-trim.jpg

Actually, I think the constant velocity carbs NEED a restriction to the airflow to create more vacuum to make them work properly, so with no airbox (and restriction) they bog down to a very lean condition. The airbox inlet was carefully designed.

After thinking about it, maybe you can't exchange the driver between the bikes... the 1st gen owners would be disappointed and the 2nd gen folks would be embarrassed. That just leave the light bulbs.

"89 Starter Relay ???

36Y-81940-00-00 Relay, Starter Zanotti Motor $39.65 https://www.zanottimotor.com/shopping/pLookUp.php But 5bikes... you happen to have a part number or year and model for the one you used? Cheaper parts are ALWAYS welcomed... -
Messing with the carbs
mbrood replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks Squeeze, I'll fix that. And now that it's so obvious... the second listing for the 83 - item#20 is CALLED a SPRING and is the EXACT part number for the 84-item 36... just a typo. So that leaves us with just ONE diaphragm for the 83/85 bikes... 41R-14940-00-00 but the springs are listed different (or its a typo) 83 = 26H-14933-00-00 84 = 41R-14933-00-00... So I did a look-up for pricing and the 26H number comes up dead... maybe we solved that too... the 83-85 spring, diaphragm and needle set are all the same. found a couple more typos for the 83 and 84 that don't work on a few part look-ups... so more and more are common... oddly the 84 throttle cables are cheaper. I've edited the above listing to be (what I believe) is a corrct listing. Just for added info (like we need that?), the 84 I can touch has the same "slider" as I descrbed above and the spring is the SAME O.D. (.91" / 23.11mm) and length (about 6.33" / 161mm?). -
"89 Starter Relay ???
mbrood replied to CAZCO's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The heavy posts on the relay need the SAME attention... clean 'em up and then make sure they are tight. Mine weren't all that pretty when mine died. Oh, it went "click" like a champ... just nothing else happened. It had been a "hesitant" starter before and with a new solenoid it was EVER so happy to spin up, hot or cold. Here's the OLD guts... http://bergall.org/temp/venture/solenoid.jpg -
"89 Starter Relay ???
mbrood replied to CAZCO's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
The starter SOLENOID is to the left of the battery, hidden under the edge of the fairing... round job with those HEAVY cables going to it... one from the battery and one down to the starter... If you were to pull the battery box... it's mounted on the left side... two flat ears on the battery box go into two slots in the rubber mount that holds the solenoid. -
Messing with the carbs
mbrood replied to CrazyHorse's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I'll take a bit and try and see the differences... BUT the 83 shows THREE diaphragm numbers... 20 99999-01536-00DIAPHRAGM ASSY (26H-14940-00-00) 1 20 41R-14940-00-00DIAPHRAGM ASSY 1 20 41R-14933-00-00SPRING, DIAPHRAGM I KNOW the 41R-14933 SPRING fits inside the diaphragm that has a reduced ID part way down... don't know about the others. How's a guy suppose to know what to order for an 83? Here's the highlighted differences between 83 and 84... (I found a few typo errors for both the 83 AND 84 and with Squeezes help, this should be a corrected copy). 1983 Venture 1 26H-14900-00-00 CARBURETOR ASSYN/A1 2 26H-14901-00-00 CARBURETOR ASSY 1 1 3 26H-14902-00-00 CARBURETOR ASSY 2 1 4 26H-14903-00-00 CARBURETOR ASSY 3 1 5 26H-14904-00-00 CARBURETOR ASSY 4 1 6 98503-04014-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD (98580-04014-00) 3 7 26H-14958-00-00 COVER, DIAPHRAGM 3 8 98580-05012-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD (97801-05012-00) 8 9 93210-03119-00 O-RING 1 10 341-14991-00-00 SCREW 3 11 3G2-14231-16-00 JET, POWER (#080.0) 1 12 11H-1410A-00-00 STARTER SET 1 13 22U-14536-00-00 GASKET 1 14 2L1-14191-00-00 PLUG, DRAIN 1 15 241-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 16 3LD-1490H-00-00 DIAPHRAGM SET, 5 1 17 3G2-14231-36-00 JET, 1 MAIN (#180.0) 1 18 98511-04012-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 4 19 92901-04600-00 WASHER, SPRING 192901-04100-00) 4 20 41R-14940-00-00 DIAPHRAGM ASSY 1 21 26H-1490J-00-00 NEEDLE SET 1 22 22U-14199-00 GASKET 1 23 22U-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 24 22V-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 25 26H-1411A-00-09 BLOCK JET ASSY 1 26 26H-14941-06-00 NOZZLE, MAIN 1 27 137-14153-00-00 WASHER, MAIN JET 1 28 22U-14565-00-00 SCREW 1 29 4G0-14142-42-A0 JET, PILOT (#42.5) (4G0-14142-42-00) 1 30 98503-04014-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD (98580-04014-00) 1 31 92901-04600-00 WASHER, SPRING (92901-04100-00) 1 32 26H-1414G-00-00 PIPE, MAIN BREED 1 33 26H-14985-00-00 FLOAT 1 34 22U-14190-15-00 NEEDLE VALVE ASSY 1 35 1J7-14994-00-00 NET, FILTER 1 36 41R-14933-00-00 SPRING, DIAPHRAGM 1 37 3G2-1423A-74-00 JET, MAIN (#370.0) (3G2-14231-74-00) 1 38 22U-14561-00-00 O-RING 1 39 22U-14115-00-00 PLUG, SCREW 1 40 22V-14968-00-00 CAP 1 41 22U-14968-00-00 CAP 1 42 26H-14952-00-00 WASHER 1 43 31H-14197-00-00 PIPE 2 44 26H-14197-00-00 PIPE 2 45 22U-1490M-00-00 STARTER LEVER SET, 2 4 46 26H-14193-00-00 PIPE 2 47 31H-14193-00-00 PIPE 2 48 92603-06010-00 SCREW, FLAT HEAD 1 49 31H-14987-00-00 HOSE 1 50 31H-14139-00-00 CLIP, PIPE 2 51 90467-10008-00 CLIP 5 52 26H-14987-00-00 HOSE 1 53 26H-1490L-00-00 STARTER LEVER SET, 1 1 54 26H-14504-00-00 ROD SET 1 55 98580-06010-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 16 56 26H-14139-00-00 CLIP, PIPE 1 57 98580-05014-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD (97801-05014-00) 1 58 31M-14139-00-00 CLIP, PIPE 1 59 26H-26313-00-00 CABLE, THROTTLE 3 1 60 26H-2631J-00-00 CABLE, THROTTLE 4 1 61 41R-14118-00-00 CAP 1 (for float valve seat) 62 822-14147-00-00 O-RING (for float valve seat) 1984 Venture 1 41-V1490-00-00 CARBURETOR ASS''Y 1 2 41V-14901-00-00 CARBURETOR ASS''Y 1 1 3 41-V1490-20-00 CARBURETOR ASS''Y 2 1 4 41-V1490-30-00 CARBURETOR ASS''Y 3 1 5 41V-14904-00-00 CARBURETOR ASS''Y 4 1 6 98503-04014-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 3 7 26-H1495-80-00 COVER, diaphragm 3 8 98580-05012-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 8 9 93210-03119-00 O-RING 1 10 341-14991-00-00 SCREW 3 11 3G2-14231-16-00 JET, MAIN 80 (80) 1 12 11H-1410A-00-00 STARTER SET 1 13 22U-14536-00-00 GASKET 1 14 2L1-14191-00-00 PLUG, DRAIN 1 15 241-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 16 3LD-1490H-00-00 DIAPHRAGM SET, 5 (26H-1490H 1 17 3G2-14231-34-00 JET, PILOT AIR (170) 1 18 98511-04012-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 4 19 92901-04600-00 WASHER, PLATE 4 20 41R-14940-00-00 DIAPHRAGM ASSEMBLY 1 21 26H-1490J-00-00 NEEDLE SET 1 22 22U-14199-00-00 GASKET 123 22U-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 24 22V-14147-00-00 O-RING 1 25 26H-1411A-00-09 BLOCK JET ASSY 1 26 26H-14941-06-00 NOZZLE, MAIN 1 27 137-14153-00-00 WASHER, MAIN JET 1 28 22U-14565-00-00 SCREW 1 29 4G0-14142-37-A0 JET, PILOT (37.5) 1 30 98511-04016-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 1 31 92901-04600-00 WASHER, PLATE 1 32 26H-1414G-00-00 PIPE, MAIN BREED 1 33 26H-14985-00-00 FLOAT 1 34 22U-14190-15-00 NEEDLE VALVE ASSEMBLY 1 35 1J7-14994-00-00 NET, FILTER 1 36 41R-14933-00-00 SPRING, DIAPHRAGM 1 37 3G2-1423A-74-00 JET, MAIN (#117.5) 1 38 22U-14561-00-00 O-RING 1 39 22U-14115-00-00 PLUG, SCREW 1 40 22V-14968-00-00 CAP 1 41 22U-14968-00-00 CAP 1 42 26H-14952-00-00 WASHER 1 43 31-H1419-70-00 PIPE 2 44 26H-14197-00-00 PIPE 2 45 22U-1490M-00-00 STARTER LEVER SET, 2 4 46 26-H1419-30-00 PIPE 2 47 31-H1419-30-00 PIPE 2 48 92680-06010-00 SCREW, flat head (92603-06010 1 49 31H-14987-00-00 HOSE 1 50 31H-14139-00-00 CLIP, PIPE 2 missing 51 26H-14987-00-00 HOSE 1 52 26H-1490L-00-00 STARTER LEVER SET, 1 1 53 26H-14504-00-00 ROD SET 1 54 98580-06010-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 16 55 26H-14139-00-00 CLIP, pipe 1 56 98580-05014-00 SCREW, PAN HEAD 1 57 31M-14139-00-00 CLIP, PIPE 1 58 41V-26313-00-00 CABLE, throttle 3 1 59 41V-2631J-00-00 CABLE, THROTTLE 4 missing missing
