2019 Top 10 Most Powerful Motorcycles. Top two are V-4's
cowpuc replied to Du-Rron's topic in Watering Hole
I could Tuffy,, I DEFINITELY COULD Indeed, those V65's were AWESOME scoots!! Kind of akin to the Suzuki Madura on steroids... Fun bikes!! Then, if memory serves correctly, along came the V-Max and Honda and Suzuki calmly and regretfully bowed out of the early muscle bike scene Which brings up another itchy palm point,,, all this about V-4's has my trigger finger twitching for a 1700cc V-Max... I know it won't hold a candle to Maggie but still,,, a 180 horse power modern day, injected V-4 would sure enough put a on this geezers mug! Thanks alot @Du-Ron,, ya done got me dreaming again:thumbsup: By the way Tuffy,, thanks for your service in doing all you did to keep America free brother!!:usa: -
Oh yeah,,, I TOTALLY understand Bay = GREAT POST IMHO!! ,, just glad you didnt post one with a Wanted Poster on it

Hope the didnt chase that lop eared advice seekin varmint @Chaharly off (sorry bout that Cha)... Another flaw of mine,, didnt mean nothin by it Cha,,, just got carried away as usual:whistling:

What do mean wordy,,, didnt you notice the video camera hanging from my shoulder and camera in the pouch on my hip in the picture I supplied,,, no words,, just a pic,,, that shoulda counted for something here brother :rasberry::rasberry: Love you too Sly!
-
Yeah,,, I know,,, it's another flaw in my otherwise completely innocent, introverted and normal personal identity Sly. I had kind of a rough childhood, left home at 15, lived on the streets, ate out of dumpsters, figured out nothing was free in life before I was 16, saw a lot of stuff that no kid should be exposed to (close friends killed) , met the Lord, He and I hammered my trajectory, got a job, bought my 1st House with cash before my 19th birthday. Out of all that rough beginning also came the fact that life could be way to short and that I needed to document what was unfolding before my very eyes. Got involved in takin. The introduction of the digital camera's/video was like a HUGE calling card with my name on it. After that happened I would do things like taking over 12 thousand (not a typo) pics every time we set out for a month or two of CTFW or at a Graduation or what ever in an attempt to get a few worthy pictures. That habit slid me into finding great joy in snapping away. I dual Majored as a non traditional college student when I went back to school in '93. As well as a B.A. in Business Management I also ended up with a CIS (Computer Information Systems) degree which both were a valiant attempt at teaching a completely old school care free unorganized hippy to be at least becoming somewhat organized. It really did not work but some of it did in that I did manage to go external on P.C. hard drives and now have more than 1 = 1 terrabyte externals full of pictures/video's = how I know where to find the pics. Tippy was also plagued by a similar disease as I in my love for pics and, 40 years of being married to me, spending her earlier years of being a stay at home Mom for our 4 kids and home schooling them ended up with endless family pics in photo albums with the contents of pre-digitized photo's. We also have stacks of VHS home videos from those years too.. Short answer brother,, yeah,, I pretty much dont do a lot of nothing with taking a ,, or :photographing: or sometimes even :photographing:... I know you dont care much for long answers so I made that as short as possible Sly.. How'd I do? Puc

Yep,, I too have used Haul Bikes on several occasions. The last one was a few years ago when a chap from California bought my 70 HD Cop bike. It shipped from my house in Michigan to California for under 500 bucks. If you do a little digging you can find independents who will ship cheaper, have done that several times thru the years too, but if you do that there are a lot of unknowns to deal with. Things like people showing up with open trailers come to mind. While they can lean toward taking a little more time to get to the haul (their prices are held down buy hauling numerous bikes to numerous locations IMHO), a professional Trucking Company like Haul Bikes is usually more secure. Another way that I have also used is to palletize the scoot and work thru a Trucking firm. That way is wayyyyy cheaper in my experience but a lot of the trucking companies require a crate being built. It's not that difficult to build a 1x2 crate and shrink wrap the thing but ya gotta also have the means of hauling the palletized scoot to a terminal. I did numerous machines like that and shipped for a couple hundred bucks and made a few bucks on charging my customers for the crating but it's a lot of hassle. On the cop bike to Cali the scoot sold with both types of shields, bat wing and classic. I ended up leaving the classic attached along with the original trunk. Then I grabbed some carpet padding, wrapped the bat wing in it, wrapped that in cardboard with shipping tape, then when the Haul Bikes got here and after they tied the scoot in their rig I took the bat wing and used cheap ratchet straps from HF to tie the bat wing onto the seat of the bike so the buyer could quick release it when he took possession. Haul Bikes was good with that and charged nothing extra.. Make sense Cha?

Intermittent rough running
cowpuc replied to Squarewheel's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Plugged tank vent causing to run lean as the tank forms a vacuum? Plugged carb vents doing the same? Plugged gas filter? Pinched fuel line? Fuel pump going south? Sounds like she might be starving after running for bit to me.. -
Turns out VentureFar's assessment of the 3rd Gen SVTC was SPOT ON!!
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
IMHO, all of the Air Cooled scoots I have owned/ridden over the years were obviously and quickly observed as being air cooled due to the cooling fins surrounding the combustion chamber. Those fins were fully functional as a means for acting like a heat sink and discharging heat being produced by the combustion taking place in the chamber. None of my early Honda's or HD's had "exchangers" or oil coolers for actively cooling the oil until I ended up with brand new Shovel Head Low Rider which came with an exchanger right from HD - the exchanger was an aftermarket unit though and obviously a "test" on HD's part to see if this would help in displacing engine heat. Shortly before I got out of the business HD was working on oil spraying the under sides of the pistons on their Big Twins along with Water Cooling the exhaust valves in an effort to reduce some of the heat dissapation required by the typical/normal "fin" design that has been around since the early 1900's.. IMHO, even that RnD is actually based more on meeting EPA regs and conforming to them without having to go to the more efficient fully Water Cooled design which may end up cost them in buyer numbers.... -

THANKs Duey,, my V-4 LOVIN backside needed this = thought the platform was all washed = obviously,, not so much!!! Been patiently waiting and they FINALLY did it = the Drum Mag for my AR12 is FINALLY out!! Kind of pricey though: https://www.classicfirearms.com/promag-mka-a1-20rd-drum-mka1919/ Still not sure why I need to rapid fire 20 rounds out of that thing anyway,, aint seen no Zombies since 1976,,, BUT,, I do know there are arquements coming from the gun room between the AR's in there about who has a drum and who dont... Probably gonna have to pick one of these AR12 Drum feeders up just to keep the peace in the gun room

Hard starting/carb issues?
cowpuc replied to Winddancer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Also,, you might wanna swap in some new plugs once you figure out whats going on Dancer,, IMHO - these little "D" plugs dont take to kindly to being blackened by over fueling of any form... -

Shorts? Your talking to someone who likes to ride Necked Roller,,, where I;m going I dont even need short's GOOD POINT THOUGH BROTHER!! After reading @Freebirds response and having reread Neil's report (they are the only two Varmints that I have met in person who are contributing to the delima), the thought popped into my mind of maybe the riders inseam length has something to do with it,, if its real at all... If a person has shorter legs then a longer legged person, the closeness to the pipe could change. I know that Neil is somewhat shorter in height than Don is,, just some thoughts.. -
Hard starting/carb issues?
cowpuc replied to Winddancer's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Dancer,, to my untrained pea brain (never owned or worked on an RSV like yours) what you are describing here right from the get go sounds like the classic stuck or sticking or set to high float, right down to the not having to use the choke, runs great ones it clears out and warms up and even the leaky carbs you spoke of. What happens (in some cases IMHO) is the valve that controls the amount of fuel into the bowls gets worn or gets a small blockage holding it open (not allowing the float to do its job) and the carbs will overfill. The over fill results in a flooding condition which will cause the bike to run fat (to much fuel) until it uses the excess fuel out of the carb(s) up and, because we are talking flooded with fuel at start up = no choke is needed and as a matter of fact = using the choke actually adds to the fuel soaked intake of air/fuel mixture being drawn in. Does any of that make sense or is this another one of those "dont try to follow Puc,, no one can understand him" deals? All that said, I gotta ask ya,, did you replace the Float Valves when you rebuilt the carbs? If not,, there is a good chance that they will need replacement. If so, did you double check your float height adjustments before buttoning her up? If not, and it were mine,, I would hook up some form of a line level (old Trademens term for a clear tube filled with fluid to use as a level) to the drains, open up the drains and see where the fuel comes to rest.. You might discover that you are still dealing with float valve control, a saturated float (did you replace those when you rebuilt?) or even a missed adjustment there.. Just some thoughts but please remember who shared em (not always a good thing to listen to "Puc advice" ).. All the best in figuring it out Dancer!! Puc -
Found here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/144033808988878/permalink/2248263825232522/ @Sylvester, it is our private VR Face Book page that you have to sign up for in order to participate.. Now I am new to Face Book (have had an account forever but never really participated as I never really understood how to use it = special thanks to my son for helping me with that) so I am far from one to advise ya Sly but, if memory serves me, only members in good standing here get approved for access to our VR page on FB.. @Prairiehammer would be the one to answer questions about signing up and all that as he is our Bossman over there. Does this help?

Turns out VentureFar's assessment of the 3rd Gen SVTC was SPOT ON!!
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Possibly just another one of those cases of "you can't believe everything ya read on Face Book" thingys brother .. The burns those varmints over there are showing do look suspiciously like someone accidently backed into a hot wood stove on a cold winter morning trying to warm up!! If actually true though and folks do experience unmanageable heat from that rear pipe, I do HIGHLY recommend wrapping the pipe in pipe wrap to keep from getting burned like we old schoolers used to do,, it works and, IMHO,, LOOKS AWESOME!! -
WOWZY WOW WOW WOW @VentureFar,, turns out you nailed it precisely!! While playing on Face Book I ran across one of the 3rd Gen sites and did some reading (having had time to join over there but am gonna = here is the page I am quoting this info from though = https://www.facebook.com/groups/StarVenture .. Remembering your AWESOME investigating reporting on the 3rd Gen back when you wrote that article that was published in Ultimate Motorcycling ( found here if anyone missed it - you should read Neil's article if you haven't - talk about a perfect, unbiased take on the new bike,, VERY WELL DONE BROTHER!! = https://ultimatemotorcycling.com/2018/03/01/iron-butt-comparison-2018-yamaha-star-venture-vs-personalized-2007-royal-star-venture/ ).. Here is a quote that you wrote in your article: """The heat coming off the rear cylinder exhaust on the left side is a real issue in warm weather. It never got above about 73 degrees on this ride, but on my Eluder Death Valley ride it got up to 78. When I was going 35 mph, my left leg was hot enough to be raising my internal body temperature, or at least it felt that way. I am concerned how the heat will affect me when I am riding in stop and go traffic in the California summer.""" Turns out that there are numerous incidences of new owners now of the 3rd Gen SVTC feeling the heat bad enough on that left side that you mentioned so bad its actually burning their legs!!!! There are numerous pictures there on FB (UGLY - dont look if ya got a weak stomach) of the riders left legs getting hot enough that that pipe on the left rear actually cooked em - to the point of leaving them blistered and scarred!! One guy even got it so bad he ended up having to go the hospital,, nasty stuff!! I did read there where someone made the suggestion of wrapping the pipes like we use to do on our Sporty flat trackers. That actually is what I would have recommended had I of found that on FB at an earlier date.. Your observations were SPOT ON VentureFar and I just wanted you to know that your time, effort and professionalism in doing the testing was and is GREATLY appreciated!! P.S. - you can share this with your new best friend who has you do the testing if you would like = kind of a job recommendation for future opportunities as it were.. The world of motorcycle ownership and riding NEEDS straight shootin, call it like it is, honest reporting like you do brother!!!

Not me, my son got me orientated on Face Book usage and I think I done got addicted... I been really having fun catching up on our VR Facebook page reading (AWESOME) but got side tracked posting family pictures on my sisters FB (that stands for Face Book = learned that from my son I did LOL) page and chatting with her for few hours over there..... Taking back all the bad stuff I heard and thought I knew about FB,,, its actually WAYYYY COOL!!! That @Prairiehammer is doing a BANG UP job on our page over there = THANKS KEV!!! Also finding out that FB is a GREAT way to spy on the kids

passing light mounting bar
cowpuc replied to mike042's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I grabbed a light bar for a Honda Shadow and ran it on a couple of my MK1 83's for a long time. It fit under the headlight and its mounting screws lined up perfectly with the screws where the two front cowling halves meet. I think I still have that old light bar around here somewhere if you would like measurements off it to double check with current light bars available.. I am almost positive it was originally for a Shadow 750.. Got it from a Honda Shop that was going out of business, it was stuck in their "bargin bin" and I grabbed it.. It worked GREAT, was fairly easy to wire up and all that but this was at a time before "LED"s and the increased draw on that sissy stator Mom Yam stuck us Mk1 1st Genners with didnt care much for running the spots full time so I had to run them selectively.. Other than that, they were AWESOME on the 1st Gen (IMHO) and looked really cool too (also IMHO).. -
According to Parts Nation the actual fork leg bottoms and fork tubes are same same for both bikes: O7 RSTD: https://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/50045f49f8700209bc794d9a/front-fork 07 RSV (Venture): https://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/50045f90f8700209bc794e7f/front-fork But,, of course, the entire assembly shows different Pt numbers so I would say YES, you could swap out the forks themselves with no problem,,, according to the parts diagram.. Hope this helps.. Puc

Clutch Slave Cylinder
cowpuc replied to uhfradarwill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yeah,, when working in gas fumed areas it's probably best to not lite the torch, just use the tip of the torch tip, unlit, to tap on the heads of the screws :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl::rotfl: -
Clutch Slave Cylinder
cowpuc replied to uhfradarwill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:sign yeah that: Sometimes even taking a smaller sized brazing torch tip and placing the flame right in the center of the head of the screw/bolt/allen head and heating it a little will help in getting the steel to release from the aluminum... The absolute WORST nightmare I have seen due to what Corporal Newkirk is talking about here has to due with that happening with Spark Plugs in Aluminum heads = NIGHTMARE waiting to happen!!! I had a friend who was bragging to me about not having to swap out plugs for over 100k miles.. To which I replied,,, all good till ya gotta swap in new plugs = talk about inviting Murph to your birthday party!! -
Clutch Slave Cylinder
cowpuc replied to uhfradarwill's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
:sign yeah that: Right there with Bongo!! Matter of fact, I have actually broken a couple of those really cheap handled HF "T" allen handles.. After that experience, if even needing to put questionable torque on cheap HF "T"s, I just slide the box end of a matching sized box/open end wrench up the allen shaft to the handle, then slip another box end over the open end end of the wrench attached to the allen shaft and use it to apply torque to the T handled allen.. Works great.. If you do break a handle on one of those cheapy T's dont throw the remaining allen away, just take a dremel cutoff wheel (or bench grinder) and cut the end of the allen off that the T is molded around. Now you have an extra long straight allen that you can use with a small hand held impact wrench (should be one of those in EVERY tool box in America IMHO). You simply use a matching socket size to the allen on the 3/8 drive of the impact, that combination works AWESOME for slave screws like we are talking about...
