MY OH MY!! Miracles happen in the strangest of places,, fancy meeting you here! HI YA Tech Sargent Coffey (or is it General Coffey now?), its been farrrr to long my precious brother! @CMCOFFEY, Chris, how you been? Well I hope GREAT, and the family too! Tips sitting here as I type this and says HOWDY and sends her love too. I am in it for the long haul in recovery, the Doc who pulled the tumor and other parts n pieces said 5 years before I would start feeling any sort of normal (huh, normal? well that certainly wouldn't be normal lol) and he werent to far off. I am at about 65% but that is a major improvement so I really can't complain. Matter of fact, I praise God! Fixing the 84 and sold Exodus? You need any advice on the 84 fixing jump in the Water Hole head 1st and pick away my friend. I gotta a little brain fluid left (I lost some thru a leak in my nose, really, I did,,,, weird huh?) but what I got left is yours for the taking, glad to help anyway I can. PLUS, there are still quite a few 1st Gen guru's hanging around VR that I know can bail us both out if/when we need em! Tweeksis is wearing the "Nellis" sticker and flight tag you gave us for Tweeks. I moved alll my stickers over again when we had to move on to our 6th, and looks like final 1st Gen. Like her sister, she LOVES those reminders of great times brother as do Tip and I! WELCOME BACK and here are a couple video reminders of those precious memories God allowed us to all make together! Love you Coff! Puc -
I/we got warned about wearing a helmet that looked like a Police Hat out in California cause it was white and half shell. Turned out the District Court in Sacramento didnt like the warning the motorcycle officer gave us because 3 months later I got a bill from them for $500. If me n Tweeks came cruising thru Elk Grove California with that tank on her backseat and hose coming out of the top of it like that, just as sure as I am sitting here, we would get stopped, Tweeks impounded and me jailed facing a $20000 fine for having an operating Moonshine Still on the road.. I do like it though @RedRider, it has that "I can ride ALL day" look about it! Puc

Differences between 2008 - 2013 RSV?
cowpuc replied to rpep1982's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
@rpep1982,, awe,, thank you for the compliment on my feedbacks on this stuff my friend, its appreciated and so are you! GOOD ON YA on the Progressives! Should be good to go there. On the leak, when you say shifter shaft are you talking about the shaft that comes out of the case where the shifter itself attaches? Is it dripping from that location? If so there is a good probability that you have oil sneaking out of the Stator area via the grommet or wiring itself where they enter the stator area. If you are thinking the shaft that comes out under the forward drive cover, there are TONS of things that it could be, assuming always get me in trouble. It could actually be sneaking down from above being caused by slight over fill in the crankcase at oil change and then collecting oil in the airbox.. Lots of potential under that cover for oil leak. Another one is to double check the screw on the forward cover that has the copper washer behind it. is it tripping from one of those cover screws? No problem, we will find it! -
Thanks @saddlebum! and Ben,, me thinketh thou knoweth me to well LOL

Throttle cables connection to carbs
cowpuc replied to Pop's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
100% YAH THAT!! You da MAN @Marcarl -
I just wrote this for someone on Facebook and thought I would copy/paste it back on here. I know we have talked and talked and talked about this over the years but,, being new here again I thought I would stir the pot this morning a little by reposting it again.. Admin,, sure you dont wanna rethink not having me sign I contract I wouldnt cause trouble? LOL ""Pull the bikes side covers so carb slide covers are accessable, pull the slide covers on the carbs n remove diaphrams/slides (good time to check diaphrams for pin holes/tears), open the drains on the carbs, go to ag store and purchase large syringe for horses, pick up carb cleaner (I use spray carb cleaner from AutoZone but have also used B-12 very successfully and even Chem Dip (BUT you have to be careful and work fast with Chem Dip!). Inject carb cleaner thru the drain hoses into carbs one at a time until the carb cleaner comes out of the hole that the slide needles go into in carb body one at a time and then close the drain when the cleaner drips out of hole. This will assure carb is filled with carb cleaner. Let the carb cleaner set in carbs for at least 24 hours UNLESS your using Chem Dip! With Chem Dip, 20 minutes MAX! After sitting for 24 hours, hook syringe back up, open drain and pull cleaner from bowls with syringe and pump syringe to agitate cleaner in carb bowls. After agitating suck cleaner out of carb bowl(s) disgard. Fill syringe with raw gas, inject raw gas into carb(s) until it comes out of diaphram needle hole and agitate. Suck raw gas out and disgard. replace carb parts, check the slides to make sure they move freely in carb bodies, put covers back on over diaphrams. Make sure slide springs are same length, make sure the little oring under cover is in place. close it up, make sure drains are closed, turn on ignition and fill bowls with fuel pump by toggling kill switch until bowls are full (when fuel pump stops clicking). Crank her up and spit check headers to see if its now running on all four while starting with cold engine. I also like to do new plugs and clip off 1/4 inch of each plug wire at spark plug caps if corrusion is present before I start it up too and sync the carbs when done."" ReplyForward

Differences between 2008 - 2013 RSV?
cowpuc replied to rpep1982's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I have never been an owner/operator of a 2nd Gen so no real clue what the differences are thru the years. I do know there are some things to look for when buying and if I were thinking of going that route I would want to know what they are. I never was an owner/operator of the 89 either but have swung the leg on the 83/85 MK1's a few times and gotta say if I were in your shoes and you like your 89 I would put a few hours of time in it and some cash to bring it up to road worthiness. I have criss crossed the country and most of Canada on our 83's numerous times and have always had great success with their reliability with very few failures thru the years. How many miles on your 89 @rpep1982? How many of those miles have you put on it and how long have you had it? I have no idea if yours has the 4 brush starter in it but all my 6 MK1's ran the 2 brush starter out to retirement of the bike and did that simply by taking the starter off when it started showing sign of doing what you mention and cleaning the carbon brush dust out and off the interior of the starter. One I actually did "feel" a looser armature bearing in and I replaced that. I also found that keeping a good battery in them helped with starter longevity as it keeps the starter from getting hot. If it were mine and it has the white, three wire stator terminal on the left side about 1/2 up the frame I would undo that terminal and ohm out the stator to see if the 3 legs match in resistance. If so I would use it as is and HARD WIRE that connection and do away with the terminal but thats only cause I had my fill of issues with that terminal early on in ownership. I would also drop in some Progressive springs in her forks if that hasnt been done. Doing so and you got a new bike right there! Are you sure on the shift shaft leak? Where are you seeing the leak? At the shift shaft under the cover where the shaft exits the internal block? There are numerous things that can cause oil to gather under there is why I ask. I would definitely take a look at the carb diaphrams too and make sure they are worthy no matter how many miles on it BUT, I would do the same thing if I sprung for a 2nd Gen or any other used bike that had CV carbs on it that I was going to trust with my kids in tow or even riding alone cross country. All that said, if you just want to ride something different than heck ya, I would opt for a 2nd Gen,, they are cool and definitely earned a reputation as 3rd place for the best of the best all time touring bikes BUT you already have the 2nd place title holder for that class with the 89.. 1st place still goes to the mighty 83/85 MK1 Puc -
Personally I never cared much for redo's, I would be thanking God.

Your welcome Pasta. You living in Utah, especially if your not like cruising all over Salt Lake City, is truly a whole different living experience. Life in Utah is, well for lack of better way to explain it, like stepping back into a time when the American experience was more for the risk takers I reckon. I love it out there but I was always a desert rat. You pull into Salina to get gas when your following the 50 = Loniest Highway In America (got a sticker - its cool. Rode 50 from Ocean City all the way over to its end at my daughters in Sac and lots of other times in portions) and watch as trucks pull in with a 30' trailer behind it and a 16' trailer with a boat on it behind the trailer and BOTH trailers are on ball hitches. Ask the guy pulling them if thats legal,, he says - out here where America is still America it is lol. Kids come riding down the road in Downtown Salina on their quads, ride past the cops who wave at the kids as they are pulling into the gas station to fill their quads and the gas can they have in their left hand. Its a site to behold. Point to the mountains off in the distance and say,, heyyy kid,, you think I could make it up there on this beat up ol touring bike to camp on that mountain top? Kid looks at me and says I guess it would depend on how good of an off roader you are. Then say,, well how do I get there? Kid says, ya just ride across those fields between here and there LOL. Now @Pasta Burner, being from Utah you probably know exactly what I am talking about. Here in Michigan, and in most states, cutting off road is strictly forbidden except on designated trails. State/Federal lands here at home dont really belong to the tax payer anymore BUT out there, in some places it still does. If I LIVED out there and was still riding like I use to,,,,,, heck yeah,, Tweeks would carry a 2 gallon tank on a hitch as you show 24/7 more than likely, along with that water jug I always carry on her side. Consider the source though too cause a Helmet probably would not even be found in my riding gear either lol. I LOVE the West and ohhh how Tweeks and I miss it. Yeah,,, mount er up and hit the desert!

The only spot I have found in the states where xtra fuel is an absolute must was the xtraterrestrial highway from nellis to Tanopah. we did have to buy a 2 gallon can (was big $$ at the nearest station so they KNEW that had a captured market lol) and used it to make it across. I always carried a couple quarts of fuel in oil jugs under my rear carrier where it was well protected anyway though cause I have a habit of rolling past fuel stations and telling Tip pushing aint that bad (and got ran out a couple times too) but that was just because I am a huge risk taker I guess, getting caught up in the moments of riding bit me a few times. There are several providers of xtra fuel cans worthy of in side bag carry that if I werent so stubborn I would have been better off with. I wouldn't carry fuel like that all the time cause now adays it would be like carrying gold out where theives could grab n go BUT in a crunch I would, even though it does create safety issues. @Pasta Burner i have often pondered putting a cooler back there like that or even moving the rear case/trunk back there to lower the center of gravity but never stopped riding long enough to try it. Matter of fact, i ended up taking the hitch deck off Tweeksis that was on her when I got her from @Carbon_One because it was just another something to remove when I was swapping tires at roadside. I still have that and an actual fuel hitch assembly for a MK1, if you hear of anyone looking for one let me know.

So sorry this happened to you Eileen but sooo glad you are ok and others involved too! @Freebird, please give your precious bride a hug for Tip and I and tell her its all going to be ok. Trucks, cars, houses and bikes can ALL be replaced or fixed but she is irreplaceable. PRAYERS UP!

You probably dont remember this but my last trip over to Kanuckian Land for a rally that @dogman filled in the gap for you cause you didnt want to be responsible for having to cook me that most delicious Carl Burger that you had offered me countless times but always seem to sneak away from you led us all on a ride to check out the scenery in the area. @saddlebum and I were back in the rear of the pack goofing off as usual. @The Tooch was back there with us and we were having a pretty good time until we came to this place in the road where someone had spilled a bunch of the fertilizer we are talking about. I noticed that the trail of slippery stuff ended at a road side outhouse looking thing and the fields on the side of the road had real good coverage of green on it so I am sure you are correct, to much of the stuff and brown brown brown. As I recall though @Marcarl, you had mentioned in your 4 1/2 hour speech during riders meeting before we pulled out of Dogman's home, where I had spent the night listening to Dogman warn me of a couple fertilizer producers/spreaders in the group, that you, not Ben, had ridden the route we would be traveling the day before. You sure Saddlebum's company that produces the fertilizer is a Sole Propietership and not some kind of Joint Ownership? Just wondering..
-
Belief me @saddlebum Ben, I was just as surprised as you are that the powers that be allowed me back in!! Not sure how/why that happened, I guess maybe those in authority here are feeling the prongs of the aging thing too and maybe their judgement has been impaired a little or something. THANKS for the welcome here my precious brother! I just KNEW you wouldnt let me down, you lop eared CTFW at all times varmint!

I know, right,, isnt that amazing! For as far back as I can remember companies have been making stuff just for me and me using that equipment bearing my name has actually worked very well in determining outcomes. Back in 69 I took 2nd place in my very 1st motocross race riding a Yamaha 250. I had chosen, of course, to wear "Scott" goggles and continued to wear "Scott" goggles throughout my racing career because of the outcome of that 1st race. Trophies started piling up. My competition began asking questions about where my dirtbike skills came from. I had several sponsors during that time and even got a local Honda shop who had noticed my name in the papers and they were instrumental in my change over from Yamaha to Honda in 1973 when the 1st Elsinores came out which I started riding that 1st year, the mighty CR250M became synotimous with SCOTT in my heart. I never did disclose to anyone that allll of my seemingly "heyy, this guys good on 2 wheels" comments were all attributable to those racing products bearing my name. YOU, @luvmy40, have obviously noticed something VERY important here brother! When I noticed that same name on this seed tosser I KNEW I was once again onto something too, you have a very good eye Rich! Ironically, when I went to Menards to score a Weasel I also noticed my name, once again as I start this latest adVenture in the golden year focus of having a yard that looks like it belongs to someone who is long since retired from getting beat to death on MX tracks and who is now enjoying chasing chip monks in his yard and having the time to watch grass grow, being boldly printed on the products I look forward to the outcome I KNOW is coming all because someone in charge of some company is watching very carefully and is producing products again just for me. I am so excited I could spit because I know as I use my Scott broadcaster to toss Scott fertilizer that will grow some AWESOME Scott "Tall Fescue" grass with a little Scott "Rye" and Scott "Kentucky Blue" when the deed is done. I know my neighbors from blocks around will come down and admire my yard and even my little John Deere tractor will thank me as it enjoys hours of trimming that lawn of those sweet smelling Scott grass products. Dang,, cant loose this time Rich! Someday down the road, when this life is over and I am riding wheelies on streets made of gold and Tip is once again wearing my left over Scott goggles to keep the heavenly winds of Wyoming up there from drying her eyes out from spending 24 hours in Tweeks saddle (once we get to that point sleep will no longer be necessary) I am gonna keep my eyes out for the Scott behind the scenes of my withering life here below and drop the front end/take a break from touring the endless highways of heaven with my best friend long enough to shake his hand and thank him for all he did for me in my brief but adventure filled life I am still blessed to be living. Heyyy,, something just dawned on me here Rich,,,,,,, can you tell by my lengthy response that I really am feeling a little better
-
HOT DOGS FOR EVERYONE DOC!! Man you got it going on there brother! What you got happening there is wayyyy beyond my capabilities! looks like a high end commercial operation to these beat ol eyes! AMAZING n COOL! So I went to Menards to grab a "Weasel" by the tail,, you know, one of those rotary cultivator gizmoes? They were suppose to have 16 in stock. Got there late last night, guy searched EVERY where for the little critter, no can do he says it shows we got 16 of em but never came in.. My son gets out of work at midnight (Manages a Micro Brewery) so ol Pop Puc calls him at 12:05 AM. Son,, I says,, any chance you got a weasel? YES he says, can I borrow it from a while, ABSOLUTELY he says, want me to come over I says, ABSOLUTELY he says. Arrived at his house at 12:30, got the weasel, loaned me his cute little seed tosser too to use instead of my roller type, cutest little hand held seed tosser ya ever seen! Then the fun began,, He says DAD, gotta chance to pickup a 99 Wing, been setting a LONG time.. What say you? so I start telling him all it takes to get a scoot up to par thats been sitting for 10 years (he knows, he grew up spinning wrenches with me/for me at the business). Got about 1/2 way thru the work to be done, stopped and said, heyyy, you wanna bike? I will GIVE you Tweesis, cant ride anyway.. He looks at me and says "well I wanted the Wing so you and I could go west and relive some mems only this time I ride mine, you ride yours.. I almost broke down! My 40 year old son wants to hang with his Pop! HOW COOL! Champ, I said,, those days are gone, not the hanging but the biking.. THANKFULLY we did what we did when we did Sonshine, lots of great mems between me and my only Son,, like two tracking on one of my MK1's wayyyy out in the middle of the mountains of Utah, AZ, SD just to pan gold. Or spending HOURS playing at Wall Drug shooting aliens and out smarting that Dinosaur that tries to get cha. Or camping in mountain down pours snuggled up in the tent listens to the rain beat on the canvas trying to drowned up inside. How bout we take our car, toss in the beds and hit the road. A dad and his boy! Plans in the making! Took till 5:30 A.M. to get there though.. Brother it was GREAT to be there and very very thankful Menards didnt have a weasel! So now I got the weasel, the spreader, the straw wattle and gotta get seed. Thinking Fescue Tall cause it reads "good for shade". Then I am gonna give er a shot, if/when it cools off some here. Will follow up with you and everyone when that happens to see if black thumb, plant killer Puc can actually see green where dirt once was! Pray for those little seeds,, their gonna need it! THANK YOU TO ALL! Greatly appreciate the ideas, ALL of them! You VR clubbers have once again proven beyond a doubt, YOU are my kind of LOP EARED GURU VARMINTS!
