87 VR, carb problem
cowpuc replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Cause, like most engines, adding extra fuel when cold makes the other cylinders that may be firing properly run right while warming up. IMHO, these V-4's actually run fairly well on just three pots and supporting those three pots when cold with extra fuel/playing with the fuel/air mixture just a little can make em run a little better allowing them to cover for the misfire. Funny you mention an EGR valve and it causing similar issues.. I have experienced some of the same issues on vehicles with faulty EGR's due to that valve failing and causing em to suck air and causing lean conditions but truthfully Patch, I did not even know these scoots had an Exhaust Gas Recirculation valve (dont recall ever seeing one on one in all these years of playing with em:doh:). I thought the exhaust systems on em were pretty straight forward with no return connection back to the engine = not even sensors as they are not EFI.. My bad,,, I gotta pay better attention in class:happy34:!! Gearhead,,, as Patch suggests, you might wanna put the EGR check on the list too brother! -
:sign yeah that: I would also make sure the slide is easily sliding in and out of its tunnel from top to bottom by moving it with my finger = making sure it is not getting hung up along the full length of its travel. It should move/slide effortlessly with only slight pressure from one finger. Also double check the seating of your new diaphram and make sure it is seated properly into the collar on the slide. Make sure when seating the diaphram into the groove on the carb body before you slip the cap over it that it is not sneaking out of the groove and that the little tab on the diaphram is resting in its home on the carb body. Make sure the little O-Ring that surrounds the vacuum passage and seals against the cap is in place. Make sure that you have the spring lined up properly on the tangs on the cover interior face as you slide the cover on and carefully watch the diaphram alignment in the groove while setting in the cover in place.. Make sense (I only ask because sometimes I dont )..

:sign yeah that: also remember,, if things went south enough that the jugs have actually collected water in them, the probability of moisture having collected in other unwanted area's is increased substantially IMHO.. Bearing surfaces dont take to kindly to rust formation and any associated pitting from such. It would be a tearful moment to spend hours splitting the cases and pulling the pistons to toss a new cross hatch on the jugs and then put it all back together only to discover a couple thousand miles later (or less) that the cams are jumping up and down in their saddles cause they didnt get the attention they needed at rebuild.. IMHO,, there are lots of other things to think thru if your really gonna rebuild/build a motor out of the bunch Snype.. Personally,, I think you should pull em all down, sort thru the parts and pieces tossing a set of Micrometers at the pieces as you go so you can get the best of the best for your build.. Take the top case in and have it bored 1st over so your starting from fresh bore, drop in a new 2nd Gear thrust assembly so your good to go on the tranny, inspect the crank bearings for water/rust spots, watch the bike swaps for a decent Springer front end of at least 10 over variety and then set up the best of the frames on a platform so the bottom rails are level with the ground when the rear wheel is touching the ground so you can layout the amount of rake you will need to bring the Springer to the trail geometry you are looking for (I always liked as close to zero while staying in positive trail on my +10 over builds) and then proceed to cut the frame/work on frame design. LOTS to do,, LOTS of fun!! -
You are mixing your metaphores and murdering the Kings English Bum by swapping "I's" for "E's".. I am sure @Marcarl is still desired at home just like he is here.. I have no idea about the Sireing aspect of this great discussion other than what he wrote as that side of the coin is frankly non of my concern

Not to get us away from the importance of our Ice Cream challenge and another thread here @BIG TOM but I gotta ask this.. Is the Rally still held at the Dealership where I have been told it always has been held at brother? If it is, do you know if they handle/sell Honda's as well as Yammers? If so, could you see if they have one of the new Wings that they might be demoing? I would LOVE to get a spin on one!!! Thanks T,, .. Dont let that go to your head though when it comes to this Ice Cream challenge thingy though

As a little Puc I ended up having to eat my share of soap as a result of using improper choice of words when working on my Mini-Bikes and soon enough learned to use the word "Icky" of just "Ick" on the occasion when I discovered something that didnt fit into my world of gearheadedness Corporal.. That term and the usage followed me thru the years and can even be found in my CTFW experiences when talking about "Ickspressways" and so on.. I know brother,, I am one strange varmint

To all those giving advice in this thread I give a healthy fellow lop eared tire swappin varmint a double dose of !! Coop,, I know it is frustrating as all get out but take a minute or so and watch the first minute and a half of time to gander the following video to see that you are far from alone on what you have discovered about dealership tire swaps.. IMHO, the frustration is probably due to the amount of time it takes to do a tire swap properly. Most shops are ran as establishments "for profit" and the back room guys simply dont have the time to treat a scoot as if they were working on a bike of their own. This isnt meant as an excuse on their behalf but a simple reality check.. Ask the Star of this video (@VideoArizona) about his experience with the same as you have discovered. Hey Vaz,, you ever get back with your tire swapper on what you found when you and I swapped out that rear tire? Be interesting to hear their reply if you did By the way @coop,, you are welcome!! Always happy to share some free advice and video or two

please help, what would you do?

I prefer to live by The Code and not keep receipts around when it comes to motorcycle fun (or buying shooters/ammo/fishing stuff/toys for the grandkids too) as doing so seems to invite auditing by Tip when I do which can result in times of deep darkness visiting Pucland.. I do know that little things can quickly add up to big dollars fairly fast though but it sure is fun when you ride off on the finished product and watch in the rear view as the Lady has that great big on her face after CTFW for 30 days of 16 hours per day of amazing adVenture with no stops for repairs -

By the way @Gearhead,, another issue I have ran into with these older bikes is leaky wires, they can cause the same issues you are dealing with too.. A good way to check them IMHO is to pull the bike into a dark area with the side covers off, turn off the lights in the room, drop a rag over the lights, start it up and let it idle and watch the plug wires for leaks. It actually works even better if its really humid out. If you discover your wires are leaking by seeing the light show going on, I STRONGLY advise that you replace with Wire Wires like the wires that come on them OEM. Another similar related issue that I have bumped into dealing with misfire right off the bottom and under a load like you mention is; -

""When it's "good n hot" it almost runs right, but still doesn't quite respond correctly right off idle, you feel this when taking off from a standing stop. Mid range and top end are great.""i is exactly what I have experienced with faulty wires/caps, fouled plugs ect. Patch and that corrusion that Sky mentioned is present and cleaning em up with a 1/4 inch snip is a big part of the solution to correcting the stumble in many cases, especially coming up off idle when the engine is under a load.. It is amazing what doing that and a new set of plugs gapped to 32 thou will do for erradicating a right off idle stumble IMHO. Definitely something that is easy to check. -
Ohhhhh,,, I think I finally get it,,,, the Sire has been di-Sired and reduced to swatting skeeters ,,, not a good plan.. Thank you for straightening me out on this brother and to the lovely Marca for doing the same on your end!!

So are you wiring up a PLC for a controller Fool? -
:sign yeah that: IMHO, a bad seal and/or corrosion at the base of the valve stem where it sets in its rubber seal can cause some mysterious slow leaking issues (so can corrosion/ickyness along the bead areas) that can occur while the wheel is spinning up at speed. Perhaps, this is why the following video of all my dorky video's on YouTube has the highest level of viewage??

,, That's odd,, I thought disirement was being properly used as it meant you were looking for something other than tires, in this case = noise adjusters for the headers that were left behind when your scooter lost its engine at MD and @dogman noticed it . If you were looking for tires my frost bit Ice Cream lovin brain would have been expecting the word ditirement (prounced dee-tire-ment).. WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, you lop eared tail chasing varmints sure nuff got my straight forward thinkin beaner ALL twisted up now..
-
P.S. = I didnt even know us lop eared varmints had to have a certain number of posts to be able to post pics, guess that makes me a forum geezer of some sort .. I think if I was you, a new member with a new bike to post pics about,, I would probably just starting "I GOT IT!!" over and over and over again until I got to the point I could post up the pics ..

They also appear to be rubber mounted (common) for anti-vibes and the Crown Nuts may not allow for tightening. If this is so and they are loose, maybe remove the Crown Nuts and reshim against the rubber using washers or order up new rubber dampners as shown here = part number 19: https://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/500449a9f8700209bc79057d/steering

Thats why I suggest getting actual Carb Jet cleaners such as these: https://www.ebay.com/itm/AIFUDA-Set-of-3-Carburetor-Carbon-Jet-Cleaner-13-Wire-Torch-Tip-Cleaner-Tool-2/163408329640?epid=2296693244&hash=item260be53ba8:g:mVgAAOSwgVJcAo6I So you can use a smaller wire cleaner than the actual jet size. By doing so you can run the wire in and monitor what, if anything, is captured in the wires knurled cleaning area and if you pick up any brass you know your to deep. It's takes a little getting use to using them cause you dont want to oblong or oversize the jetting but it is very doable IMHO. Another thing that I have used for years is a ChemDip dip tank like this:https://www.ebay.com/itm/Berryman-New-0996-Chem-Dip-Carburetor-and-Parts-Cleaner-96-oz-Can-with-Basket/332798651243?_trkparms=ispr%3D1&hash=item4d7c586b6b:g:EqcAAOSwvoNblLcS&enc=AQADAAAB4KX%2FKt4E1xf3SDqEdBclaYbes89adbLV33TB8MwLD8p4aG97GaVyUYZVZnynYbp3yEjyH5IKjWVnZvOBvlJr5VGpxmJ0ir5m2Q5EYha39n4nEsocDLVP1toADfJ0n2TCmxc5jSUjoZ3mDbzVpCi44rX4BZylEsmU7saxvTJ3IaawJp58swPxhsTbYdkp9AaDjUxJeeaBm448vEoeoa0LpU9zQOCUt9DfKvBCmIi35NadqICllAFp9g6SSI%2BuVEqNhQxxAPkgo%2Bie0cZoXt%2Bu0bdXHwav0DiIcJ16X3vUuqiT7B1iMjAQwR2ie7VzBBIhkaQ6FHnNvi%2FA3%2B%2FUHBF6uu8XIEdUiOXps5%2FZ94wtQ4j1dr%2BeIP%2BkZwd9A4erDe2ae3O95aNMaCK%2Fgw%2B1v3Uqgw%2Fd6FiRLqVnBNZhApsB6DOMLprOAWhZRnHhF3UslHP2RYvbmajzxfFGwPcbJMmfIMWZEDk9SDQ7LWTOof3ZtHEPf342wkYmVfVTPZ%2Feiu0LtlyC3eaI9bEWHzw%2FKLl3vTgBbhSNO%2FV7uyNPD0Z%2Bh0QTmcOlEt%2BrMHIHyIdLAB1KKZVEVg05k7RsDV9aDnN460jcjqflghLDMVfYjT7EFQuRs1xDA6oAMLm4dyFdZSsK1Q%3D%3D&checksum=3327986512435ad17e050f0140a3ae6690e35e9e0347 I have found this to be the only thing out there that will actually loosen stuff in clogged jetting. Spray cleaner does an ok job but no where near as effectively as Chem Dip and I have had no positive results with soaking in pure "in tank" cleaners such as Sea Foam. By the way @Gearhead,, you are more than welcome on the advice.. Glad to help! -
