  1. I cant recall how far Manistique is from Escanaba but for sure the accomadations will be cheaper there.. Seems like its only about an hour between the two... I had my family in da up yonder last year for vacation and we stayed at the Super 8 in Escanaba and it was under 50 for the night for two beds.. Good resturant across the parking lot and bike shops around town too.. Come to think of it,, indeed there are a couple of older ma/pop joints coming into Manistique that you may find cheap.. Another thing you might wanna do is stop at the welcome center on the North side of the bridge and grab a U.P. motel coupon book - my wife taught me that!! Skeeters are real bad right now so if you decide to hardcore it you might wanna sleep a couple nights at home with a chainsaw running to get used to the buzzing noise Watch your speed in Michigan, we are in a world of hurt economically and lots of small towns are writing for 1 mile over now - ye be warned!!! 2. I have one that I have had for almost 29 years. I have NEVER had any problem with her hitting the tank, she usually refills my drink automatically whenever I stop, I never have to worry about her falling off or getting in the way and we have become extremely close over the years.. I was told by a lot of my old buddies that the original cost for her was way to high, they acted like I was giving up my freedoms or something.. I have found out through her 29 years of great service and total reliability to both myself and the kids that the return on my original investment has been many times greater than any other cup holder I could have possibly obtained... Only problem is she is one of kind and not for sale.. 'Puc
  3. Are misspelling his name?? SHouldnt it be "tWETy"
  4. Nahhhh,, I am happy with the 2 inches of skeeters built up on the old girl...
  5. Sounds great, thanks for being willing to deal!! Might be a little bit before I can get down there to you. If you get a chance to sell it while waiting for me please DONT feel bad about doing it - SELL IT!! If worse comes to worse and I cant get a couple days away soon I will be down there in July.. I am riding "66" Chicago to LA and will check it out than!! THanks again 'Puc

So Skidder,, have you got pics of the FL anywhere online for us folks who like Harleys to look at?? Also, what are you asking?? Tks Puc
  7. Oh yea, there are other things that can cause the problem too.. There is a spring on the shift shaft internally that is suppose to apply action to both up and down shifter movement.. Its "U" shaped and if its broke problems will start like you stated - only its usually not a stiff feeling in the shifter, just real sloppy with no return pressure.. Fairly easy fix!!
  8. A few years ago I was on my annual 2 month ride about and spent the better part of 2 weeks riding in the rain.. Shortly after that I had problems with the ol sticky shifter and also a sticky rear brake pivot.. First check and make sure that something besides dryness isnt causing the problem. Got a bolt rubbing or shifter bent in against something.... Take some WD, lay the bike against a tree so the shifter is kinda aiming on an upward aim. spray all the pivots while moving the shifter up and quickly - you dont have to actually shift the bikes tranny - just enough movement to get the lub to start working.. Spray around the shift shaft - LIGHTLY tap on the end of the shift shaft (where the little arm pretrudes from the case) while spraying with wd.. Pull the arm back out with pliers and do it again till it works freely. After you get everything worked free, take so motor oil and dump a little on eachs pivot point and work it in like you did with the WD.. Now the fun part - clean up the excess oil... Can be a pain having to stay in 3rd gear or use only your front brake cause of this... By the way,, I personally know a guy who ruined his 1st gen tranny cause he didnt fix what we are talking about and the bike didnt get all the way in gear and BANGO... Yea, fix er up 'Puc
  9. Mraf is right on the money about the Curtis Museum!! I would like to add to his summation though if its ok.. I have been thru there a couple times now and EVERY time I try to think of a comparison of this wonderful place I keep coming back to this: If you have ever been to the science museum in Chicago you know how "hands on" for kids it is.. Now think of a motorcycle or aircraft museum that is HANDS ON for us ol gear heads that still LOVE to imagine and cant keep the fingers still even on vacation!!!! Not everything is fondleable but LOTS of it is!! Plus,, and here is another favorite part of mine - it is CHEAP to get in and ALLLLLLLLLLLLL original stuff!!! Who could ask for anything more? Thanks for pointing this out of the way place out to us! 'Puc
  10. Jug, if I drove the 10 hours down to see the bike and decided it was something I was interested in would you help me out with 100 bucks off for gas?? Understanding of course that if I decided not to take it you owe me nothing.. Its about 10 hours of drive time pulling a trailer and you taking 9 for it would help ALOT!! What do you think? 'Puc

^^WORD^^ Funny,,,, I enjoy my old Heathkit Booney Bike as much as I do my 69 Santee Chop.. Only way I may differ from Wanderer on this one is that I also LOVE playing with the minds built on ego - needling peoples what I do hahaha.. You just gotta learn to appreciate how deeply affected with materialism we all can be - then you can start having fun with it.... Of course the mostest fun of all is being on two-wheels of any kind at any time,, than all those little hurt feelings just disappear and you find it doesnt matter of all... 'Puc
  12. ### Per the Polaris website..### Have any of you folks ever sat down and watch "The Lion King" with your kids?? There is part in that show where the three jackals are goofing around saying "Mofasa",,,, one says Mofasa and the other ones go "ohhhhhh" and says "say it again" and the one says it again about 3 times all going "ohhhhhhhh" and get chills each time its said - remember that??? Well,, picture ol 'Puc doing exactly that "ohhhhhhh" and getting those chills everytime he reads the Polaris name associated with a motorcycle.... To many bad experiences with their sleds and quads at the shop I guess.... 'Puc
  13. how many miles, is second gear still in it, where do you live?? There are those of us who simply cant imagine life without one of these terrible nightmares around.... 'Puc
  14. VERY NICE AREA - all of it!! Just a couple quick notes that may or may not be of assistance.. 1st - Watch for deer, especially the last hour of daylight and right after dark.. They tend to stir about then and cross roads into their feed areas.. Highway 2 from Wisconson to the bridge is actually a really nice ride and a lot safer than inland further cause a lot of it is beach on one side - deer dont really like beach sand that much.. Esc anaba is really neat - has some pretty interesting maritime stuff.. 2nd - ya gotta do the bridge crossing at least once at night and once in daytime, ALWAYS have lots of warm clothes if planning to ride up yonder - it can be 70 here in the lower and 40 up there ANYTIME!! Then a little nite ride and your frost bit.. 3rd - We are having a MAJOR issue with skeeters this year and I suspect black flies will follow soon.. Keep bug dope handy!! 4th - Because of the xtra rains and snows that we had this year (also why our skeeters are terrible) our pot holes are xtra xtra bad - keep a weathered eye peeled!! Have a great trip and enjoy our states! 'Puc
  15. oh yea, seems like his mileage was in the 45/50 range, will ask him today when I see him and find out how accurate that is.. I know its right up being Injected and all..
  16. Condor, my Nephew bought a brand new 1st year model and WOW - what a machine!! He has since added a lot of stuff (yea he's normal) like quick connect shield, Stang seating, light bar - just added different pipes and bought the programmer for redoing the mapping.. I bet gained 15 horse from the combo - didnt need it but hokey smokes does it fly now!!! I have spent lots of time on it and gotta say that I have been VERY impressed with the bikes handling, extreme electric power like pull and now, its sound - it sounds AWESOME!! He paid 16 for his (I think its 3 years old now if memory serves me correctly) and I have since seen brand new left overs here in Michigan for 13,500.. He did buy the Strat "S" model though, little more chrome and stuff in the right places.. While I surely wouldnt give that guy 18 for it I ABSOULUTLY would advise grabbing one if you were so inclined - I would if I could afford it!! If you wanna talk to someone who ownes one, rides it alot and knows the machine well I can hook you up with him anytime!! 'Puc
  17. Dont know what size to advise but I always weld up the seams after I bolt them together, its amasing how much flex that takes out of the whole contraption, another word of advice - its also a LOT easier to get a good weld when they are brand new!!
  18. Makes me drool just reading your itinerary, I LOVE the desert - thats awesome!! Heres wishing you folks Godspeed! Couple of quick suggestions.. 1st - have fun 2nd - have more fun If you find the Dragon a little more commercialized and a ticket trap, try riding the Cherohaula Skyway (short drive on the way to the Tail).... Take that back, just plan on riding the Cherohaula - you will be glad you did! Also, coming that close to Michigan you might wanna make sure you have warm clothes with you, we did the Blessing of the Bikes last weekend here and it snowed and a short jaunt up to our U.P. was in the teens at night.. Oh yea, have fun!!! 'Puc
  19. You are more than welcome Annie.. Please tell your Aussie friends who are coming State side to have a GREAT trip and if they happen to get in/around my area (Michigan) to let me know and I would be glad to show them around! I always consider folks from down under as family because of your countrys alignment with the fight(s) for freedom and in keeping us all free.. 'Puc
  20. While reading a post about who's going where when and taking what, it occured to me that I had no clue of where some of the places mentioned were at.. It also occured to me how really cool some of the places sounded and that if I knew what State the writers were talking about I would make a point to visit them to see for myself.. I am going to try and remember to include the State abrieviations with my ride storys in the future, if you think of it please do the same. Thanks 'Puc
  21. Someone had posted a message back a while ago about some friends that were coming state side for a bike trip and would be needing a trailer.. I just found and actually seen a inexpensive actual bike trailer that Harbor is selling - list is 430 US and on sale right now for 350 US.. Lot Number of the unit in my sale flyer is Number 66771 Hope this helps someone. 'Puc
  22. Good stuff here,,, the comment about why an ohm meter doesnt work is spot on! Without a load on the device it is next to impossible to find the resistance to current flow because digital stuff is sooooooo sensitive.. Yea, listen to the guy that wrote this, he has talent!
  23. Been doing cross country since wayyyy before cross country was cool.. Learned many great tricks over the years.. Bring two pair of undies, a pair of riding short (soft cotton is best) - if you are inclined to monkey butt get a pair of chamios lined riding shorts like we use for Harescrambled, 4 or five hooded sweat shirts, pair of jeans. I usually wear out 4 pair of shorts on a two monther but come home with my jeans still clean - I like to wear shorts in the desert heat.. Anyway, its easier to replace dirty clothes then wash them I have found.. Goodwill is always good for shorts for a buck and you cant even start a washer for that.. Get a small pop up tent, piece of thin foam rubber mat (hospitals use them) and as big as bike cover as you can find.. I usually sleep under my bike cover with the bike more then using the tent - especially on that awesome warm nights in the Desert with NO bugs.. Stay out of the motels, rough it - learn to enjoy the outdoors! I always carry a gallon of water on my antenna and a bag of apples hung there too.. Eat real light - makes for a much more pleasent ride.. Carry a cheap digital camera with you - get one the uses SD Cards and Double A bats. When you drop the camera taking pics on the highway you can go back and remove the card and toss the rest! Go to walmart and buy another one... Most important part is learning you bike, you should be able to come to a complete stop - dont touch ground - take back off.. Balance balance balance practice practice practice - this will increase your fun on a good cross country ride threefold... 'Puc
  24. I went to the Blessing of the Bikes in Baldwin Mi this past weekend and saw 1,262 and 1/2 Harleys, 3 second gens, two 1st gens, a Triumph 3 cyl, 6 Vulcans, two dogs hooked together, a dead fish on the PM RIver overpass, four frozen biker ladies with not enough clothes on, no one eating ice cream (it was only 43 degrees out) and a squished hotdog on the side of M-37.... Had fun on my old 69 Santee Chop, took a police whistle with me and stopped the biker cops in downtown Baldwin to let people cross in front of them hahahaha What a riot!! Lets see,, got a pic or two somewhere here... Pics didnt work,, gotta use your imagination I guess.. Puc
  25. On the way to Strugis a few years ago we had stopped for dinner, we arrived in Murdo SD about 2 minutes to 10 and barely got our orders in before closing.. Sitting waiting for our food a guy walks buy with a shirt on that said "Harley Davidson - I bought mine in Irag" and sat down behind the guy I was riding with.. I told my buddy that this new guy wasnt gonna get fed, sure enough the waitress shook her head no as he asked.. He got up and started out the door and as he walked by us I inquired about the shirt.. His name is Major Cloyd Smith (google him - really a neat guy) from Butler Pennsylvania.. As started telling us his story about getting his new bike I asked him to set down and chat for minute.. When our food came I told the waitress to give it to him that I wasnt hungry.. He said he couldnt do that, I told him that if he didnt eat it I would throw it out because I could NEVER eat in front of a person who had no food but had been over in that hell giving his life for my freedoms.. He finally agreed to eat.. After that he rode the trip with us, BRAND NEW Harley Heritage and he is two tracking with me in the mountains for MILES on gravel and dirt roads - he told me later that that was the absoulute most fun he had ever had on a bike.. We are now the best of friends, he has been to our home in Michigan and stayed with us here and has a key to our home.. Folks,,, these people who have served and are serving our country deserve to be treated with honor and total respect AND items (like flags) that show patriotism and love of county deserve that same respect.. Yea,, I guess I am just a softy, I have never been in the military but if I find someone breaking those rules above I WILL kick their ##$ anyway!!!!! 'Puc
