If this started when you changed a tire I wonder if you picked up something in the gear attached to the wheel.. Maybe something stuck in between the teeth of the gear - sounds crazy but I have seen it happen.. Maybe take it back apart and examine closely that area for debris and signs of contact wear between the gear and the ring gear it meshes into.. Also check to see that all the parts (spacers, washers) are there and in their right places..

WOW,, gorgeous pics!! I LOVE the sunset shot you got,, makes me cry inside to be back on the road again!! I could easily picture a little blue tent on the beach, chasing sand crabs around and just laying in the hot sand for a whole week - livin life my way... There are sooooo many beautiful places in our country,, its like its endless.. Glad you two lovebirds had a great time and thanks for sharing the memories with us!! Awesome story - Way to go Randy!! Puc Oh yea,, we live 2 minutes from Lake Michigan and all of our two tracks around here are dune sand,, I carry one of those small cheap Harbor Freight compressors in our Kia's trunk so I can drop my tire pressures down to 5 pounds when I "need" to and am able to refill - works great for emergency sand running... Had far to many of those "imprints" happen to me :rotf:

And some where there has got to be a terminal (plug) where the stator wires plug into the wire harness, check that terminal - I have had em with so much resistance in them that they actually melt the connectore.. You should also be able to unplug that terminal and do an ohm check across the connectors coming from the stator - if its a three phase (and I cant imagine it not being) there will probably be 3 wires at that terminal that are the same color - seems like the older models were white wires and 3 to 7 ohms checking across each wire 2 at a time.. Basically your looking for somewhere close to the same reading no matter which 2 leads you check across.. No reading means you have an "open" or broken wire, real high reading is a short.. Another check would be the voltage regulator,, cant remember right off hand how to check it but its doable, I know sometimes when they go they actually melt the bakelite right off the back of them.. OHH YEA, thats purdy!! We test rode em too, I really liked the package as well.. I did notice how quickly they steer while at speed - gotta pay attention (like we all should be anyway) cause you can change lanes real fast.. I told Tippy that I wondered if independent suspention would have helped in that arena BUT there are folks who really like that go cart feel - me included.. CONGRATS!!! :cool10:

Oh my goodness,, that is a pic of a guy we bumped into out at Sturgis this year!!! Tippy had asked why he was running ape hangers on his bike and I remember telling her how I thought the reason was obvious... I also told her that something just wasnt "right" about this gentleman,, something vague and obscure. I dont make a habit out of going up to great big hairy bikers and asking them to prove their gender,,,,, now I get it,,, dahhhhhhhh.. Thanks Skid for solving one of summers great mysterys for us... I know its part of your job to gender reference BUT it has got to take an amazing amount of courage on your part to do so - at least in some instances.. Every which way but loose... Puc

I worked in a Honda shop for years and we used pledge on brand bikes in showroom. Have used it in my own shop on restores, always worked great - body work only!! Always stay away from shields with it, never no never use anything on the saddle that will make it slippery - this can be down right dangerous!! Puc

OH MY GOSH!!!!!! What an amazing - SAD - but still downright amazing motorcycle story, and beautitfully written I might add!!! Brother,, I felt the emotions of everything from sheer terror to pure sadness!! Thank you for posting this!!! I am one of those individuals who "name" their bikes and its thru instances like this (albeit no where near as extreme - nock on wood) that all of my Ventures have earned their names.. If we ever meet I would love to shake your hand and give you a pat on the back for a survival job well done, and give "Bear" a hug and whisper a thanks to her for performing so well under such extreme odds!! If you are talking about Greenville SC (strange but we have noticed that every state in the union has a Greenville ),, its a nice place.. Daughter lived there for 7 years, lots of great riding down yonder AND lots of really good people!! Keep your chin up, sounds like better days are coming,,,, and hug those kids when/if you can - its gotta be very hard on them too!!! Puc

Now I simply cant agree with Dan O' on this one,,, the most comfy riding can be found in riding naked (or in proper 60's lingo - streakin) BUT it just aint safe so it got outlawed...

I totally know what cha mean brother!! Use to be able to eat 15 servings of all you can eat shrimp at Red Lobster, now full just from the salad,, lift a pill bottle from cupboard and it slips and half the pills go on the floor and the rest go behind the stove,, plug change in daughters car takes me 2 hours - spend 1.5 hour looking for stupid READING glasses to set gap (got to use 2.5 power now - perfect vision till I hit 40),, better stop to pee when wingy thingy says its time - the ol hold it switch has weak springs,,,, NO coffee cause the heart goes wacky with even the hint of the stuff,,, pooper maker cant hardley handle ice cream - sunflower seeds - fried foods - anything spicey (all the stuff thats good for us),,, Ya know,,,, your right Dan O',,, its a darn good thing that we learned how to handle the awesome power of these 1st Gens when we did,, traveling at warp speed like we do we have actually lived twice the life of those on 2nd genners, 5 times the lives of the old Wing riders (early models), and 36.5 times the lives of the HD riderzzzzz :stirthepot: :rotf::rotf: Sucks gettin old... Hang in there buddy,, we are all in this together!! Puc

Tippy and I went for a nice fall tour ride today,, just couldnt resist the luke warm fall day.. Anyway, couple hours from home and at certain speeds I noticed we were dropping a cylinder. Stopping and checking on what was going on revealed a big puddle of fuel under the bike. Raw fuel coming out of one of the over flow lines coming from the carbs made the diagnoses of a stuck float valve easy.. This wasnt just an occasional drip - when ever the fuel pump kicked on, the gas was SQUIRTING out! So, what do you do when your traveling and you have this happen? Some of you have road service, we dont. The old rapping on the carb trick did nothing. Given time I could have popped the carbs off in the parking lot and rebuilt it BUT we didnt have the tent/sleeping bags with us.. And of course, i wasnt about to travel on with the rear of the bike getting covered in fuel,, I hate burning bikes - especially when its under me!!! I ended up rerouting the squirting overflow hose up to the fuel cap -.. Once up there I turned the key on and off to kick on the fuel pump enough to make sure that raw gas wasnt just pouring into the carb instead of flowing out of the overflow line (line was now above the carbs) - it flowed from the hose just fine. Next I removed the fuel cap, stuck the hose into the tank inlet, snagged the cap in the neck with just one of the protusion edges so the cap would hold the hose in place. I left the door open so I could keep track of everything and it would get lots of air (didnt want fumes down on the motor any more than necessary) and we headed home.. WORKED GREAT!!! All that raw fuel ran right back into the tank, bike ran fine above 70 (so I knew I wasnt washing a cylinder) and we made it home safely... Phewww... Just another day in the life of Tippy and Puc:whistling:

Over many years of riding I have developed my own way of keeping track of my tire pressures on my bike while in motion and it has worked really good for me.. I have found that I can tell by feel and sound if my tires are low, the tires go from a solid tap to soft thump when I hit highway cracks and crevices, it all comes down to paying attention to whats going on.. I also check pressures manually when touring, especially changes in altitude - like mountain riding - with my trusted tire guage.. I have also experienced my share of flats over the years.. These have always occurred so quickly (punctures that instantly relieve pressure) that no form of "monitoring" would have helped.. Even if I did have one of these new faindaingled systems I am way to old school,, I would never trust it and find myself out on the prairie checkin my tires in the morning same as always.

Other than being able to see headlights coming at ya, cant imagine much positive at the thought of riding the Dragon at night but I will tell ya,,, riding Death Valley National Park at night with a full moon is something that HAS to be experienced!! Puc
