Couple questions comparing the RSTD to the Venture
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Here is how I explained to him,,, the Venture world is a little tricky to understand.. But being a close friend and to protect him from buyers remorse its important for him to understand it.. Even though their ugly (he has always told me how ugly he thinks my 83 is) 1st gens come in first because when Yamaha tried to give the 2nd gen RSV's/RSTD's that HD look, that he loves so well, they also detuned the mighty V-4 as much as they could to also come close to his HD in performance.:rotf::rotf: Brian, thats what I was wondering about.. When Tippy and I ride two up on our 83 she will complain about her legs getting hot (depending on ambient temps of course) if I am running without the plastic fairings.. I have NO experience with either the RSTD or the G2 Vennys and only brought it up to him cause I know neither have side fairings and I hate to see him go water cooled and still not be happy.. I may be overly sensitive to the whole thing because when we get out in the desert heat sometimes we like to ride in shorts (I know, I know,,,, shame on me - I even like to ride shirtless too,, sometimes even take my shoes off) and those side fairings are what make doing so tolerable.. My buddy is smarter than I and would never do that but still... Good point on the windshield, wonder if anyone makes the shield with the "lip" on the top that forces the air more upward... Maybe with that you could run a lower shield and still get adequate coverage... The G2's always looked like the passenger seat sets higher than the 1g's do.. Maybe this puts the rider higher up in the air foil... Thanks for the info brother!!!! Puc -
Couldnt find the thread where we were talking about impact bits and where to find them in correct size so I had to start a new thread.. Someone gave me an e-bay link to exactly the bits I was looking for and BAM - HOME RUN!!!! Got em today, PERFECT FIT and NICE TOOLS!!!!!! I have an old impact driver that I bought when I was a kid from our local Yamaha shop - think its a K/N.. The original bits were almost indestructable, lost them thru the years, cant tell you guys how many replacement sets I have since gone thru by breaking them.. By the looks/feel/quality of these Vessle bits I have a hunch the breaking days are over!!!!! Anyway, THANKS you guys for hooking me up!!!

Couple questions comparing the RSTD to the Venture
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Thanks guys!!! ALL great advice and greatly appreciated! I printed off a copy of your responses and gave it to my buddy, he said "tell those folks thanks a million".. I also told him that an added benefit of either model (RSTD/RSV) is he would finally be able to keep Tippy and I in site when we travel with them (what are friends for) ... Wouldnt be a bit surprised to see him riding Yamaha this year!! Puc Oh yea, BigLenny, I have always been a night owl, worked third shift for many years too.. Like that ol Willie Nelson song goes - the night life, aint no good life, but its my life:stirthepot: -
Happy Birthday !!! YEEEEE HAWW BUDDY - NICE BIRTHDAY PRESENT (if I am reading this right).. Hope you have a super duper riding season!! Puc

My favorite Prof in college had a simple little saying that has stuck with me for many years, it goes like this: Dont be dumb:backinmyday: (that little icon even looks like him) Of course, on the other side of that coin is one of the most archaic sayings of all time in the world of gear headedness: you cant fix stupid To which I add,, maybe so,, but we should never stop trying..

Years ago I was traveling out west with my daughter and had forgotten my Hippo's, got really cold and ended up mounting a pair of plastic milk jugs over my bars (cut em open so my hands would fit inside) and it worked great, not nearly as good as Hippo's though.. Pair of heated grips inside those Hippo's are really nice!!! By the way, the cheap dirt bike/snowmobile heated bar wraps (fit nicely under stock grips) make excellent cheap heated grips - think I paid under 25 bucks for the last set I bought..

Got into a discussion about the RSTD today (perfect time of year to talk bikes).. Guys lookin at one of the newer ones (think he said its an 05). Guy comes from a HD background, rides two up a lot, one of the things he and his partner want to get away from is the engine heat - especially on the passenger.. I told him that on my 1st gen's I have ran a lot of miles both with and without the side panels on them. When I run with a passenger for long distance I always run side panels cause Tippy complains about getting hot legs without them.. Are the newer bikes thermostated differently to run cooler than the older bikes? Is there a difference in air flow on the RSTD that makes a big difference in engine heat? I know that the RSTD he is looking at has "lowers" and he would like to be able to keep them on. Wouldnt running lowers actually interfere with the airflow on the legs of the passenger? Also, I know the earlier models of the RSTD had smaller carbs, different tranny's.. How do the later models compare in performance to the 1st gens (I know Dan,, nothing compares to our 1st gens ).. Told him about VR, he may chime in here... Thanks Puc

I think this guy has some great solutions for a number of little issues some of us have encountered with our Yams thru the years.. For sure he solved head shake, carb syncing, air flow, the need for nicer exhaust sound, traction control and some little V-4 modding questions.. Sounds like a RIOT RT!! I used to ride that area ALOT back in the good ol days.. I was an avid sledder (last sled was a T-Cat) and also dirt rider.. I used to attend a ride out of Peacock LTD called "the Snowy Chicken" up there every year - what a hoot.. Also deer hunted up there at the end of 10 mile Rd (10 mile and Kings Hiway) for many many years.. LOVE the Dublin Store and their vast amounts of Jerky.. Anyway, THANK YOU for the offer, my old beat up body with its back filled with titanium cant take the pounding anymore.. Sold the sleds and dirtbikes and gotta stick with street bikes for kicks. I really appreciate the offer though.. Have fun up there, may your hyfax stay lubed and your studs stay sharp! Braaaaaaaaap Puc

Oh yea, when you get within a couple hundred miles in any direction of the Rally you will start finding free tear off maps of the Black Hills rides at all the gas stations.. These are VERY definitive of all the good riding.. I probably have one somewhere, if I can find one I would gladly mail it to you guys if you would like...

Hey Lone Eagle, somewhere along the Columbia River is suppose to be the BEST hamburger joint in the world, some joint that grows their own beef and all that.. Anyway, I read about it years ago but never did find it out there.. Any idea of what I am talking about, location, near Dalles?? These guys LOVE to eat (me too), find that place, include it on a ride or two and you will probably increase attendance 20 fold....

So last summer I got my bike lift out on the slab with bike on it, tools skattered all over, pieces and parts piled up, sweat drippin off my forehead while standing in the sun in my shorts/barefoot/no shirt.. Buddy pulls in on his Ultra, points out that 30 feet from me is shade and 200 feet from me is the entrance into my basement where its stays cool - shakes his head and says "you are crazy standing in the sun like that".. I says to him "oh you of short memory - you have completely forgotten about last winter - its coming back ya know - I am gettin my fair share of sunshine and heat NOW".. Only time I have found it to hot to ride was out at Death Valley, but than again,, there is NOTHING like riding Death Valley all night on a moonlit night at a 105 degrees!!! Reverse pyschology dont work on Puc Eddie:mustache:

Just gonna assume neither of you have ever been to the rally before and write my response accordingly.. Your going thru Coeur d'Alene - lucky dog!! Coming from Langley, if your gonna skip Yellowstone, I would at least ride thru Little Big Horn Battle Ground Nat Park, than instead of hauling butt across the 212 I would drop down to 14 west (above Sheridan) - head west across the Big Horns, you will come to 14A (to the right) - ride 14A across the bighorns - IT IS AMAZING!! I would than turn around and ride it back, and finish the ride on 90 if I were in a hurry.. Your gonna see thousands upon thousands of bikes on the road, touring in the Blackhills during the Rally can be very slow going, roads plugged up with bikes everywhere, lots of crazys but still alot of fun if you take your time - yee be warned.. Dont let the term "Blackhills" fool ya, they are mountains and are subject to extreme weather changes, IMHO, best riding the "Hills" is early morning till early afternoon and than 5 till just before dark.. Keep your eyes on the sky between those times,, I have seen everything from tornadoes to huge hail come out of no where during those times... Leave the west end of Sturgis and you are on 14, stay on 14 and you will go thru Deadwood - awesome town (play around a little in town to be sure you dont miss mainstreet)!! Stay on 14 and you will end up riding Spearfish Canyon.. About 1/2 way up the Canyon you will come to a Lodge (both sides of the road), this is where 222 (gravel) comes in.. A very short ride on 222 is a really pretty water falls - dont miss it!! Also, if you like back country dirt road riding, 222 west thru the mountains is FANTASTIC!! Camp anywhere, lots of elk, watch for quads, you can go across the mountains on dirt roads all the way to Sundance Wyoming (awesome ride!!) and your a short jaunt to Devils Tower.. Continuing north on 14 will complete the Spearfish Canyon ride and put you right back on US-90.. Check your weather and ride hard any direction to out run the rain.. Next ride, leave out on 14 again thru Deadwood only this time stay on 85 after going thru town (Deadwood), take 85 to 385 and follow 385 thru the mountains - BEAUTIFUL!! Gonna pass a huge reservoir, than your gonna come to Sheridan Lake (on left) - I have seen Big Horn Sheep on the cliffs over looking the Lake many times - AWESOME!! Even had em cross the road in front of us a couple times - I have looked all over the country and have NEVER seen em anywhere else!! Stay on 385 thru Hill City - cool place!! Keep on 385 until you get to 87 (needles hwy), turn left (only way you can go) on 87, Sylvan Lake is on left - neat place - nice bathrooms on left as you enter.. Up da hill back on 87 and OMG - UNREAL!!! After leaving the eye of the Needle on 87 (needles hwy) keep riding (gorgeous) and you will come to 753 (entrance to Center Lake) - turn left on 753.. Follow 753 and you will deadend into 16a (Iron Mountain Rd).. BEFORE YOU TURN LEFT ON 16 GO STRAIGHT ACROSS THE ROAD INTO THE LITTLE CAMPGROUND THERE - THIS IS WHERE YOU GET TO SEE WOLFS!!! Leave the wolf place and turn right on 16a, stay on 16a (awesome ride with occasional views of Rushmore thru tunnels - wayyyyy cool).. Also, if you like to coast - this place is happening!!! Stay on 16a till you come to 244 - left turn and Rushmore is up the hill!! It will be packed, you may end up stopping on road for view.. Rushmore is REALLY prettiest at night (to me).. Turn around and go back to 16, turn left, into Keystone - neat town, GOOD FOOD!! Follow 16 to Rapid City.. Another GREAT ride that I like is 44 out of Rapid City east over to the back door of the Badlands National Park, into the park, and than out the west gate into Wall Drug.. Wall Drug is a tourist trap of a place BUT at the far end of mainstreet (again, you gotta find mainstreet - its NOT the main road you come in on) in the back of the main building on the end is a kids playground area,, the building on the back of this area is LOADED with real genuine cowboy and indian pictures - this place is AWESOME!!!! Good food here to if ya like Hot Beef Sandwiches!! Yamaha shop in Rapid City has better service than the one in Sturgis IMHO. Rapid City Harley Davidson puts on a better "show" than the Harley shop in Sturgis - IMHO. Look for and make sure you find "Mainstreet" in Sturgis, its not a the main road coming from either exit off 90! If your planning on moteling FIND IT NOW!! If your Camping at one of the big campgrounds and you want a break you can ALWAYS escape and camp on the prairie - if it not fenced and its been mowed it open camping (have never been kicked off) - no fires of course.. American Roadhouse in Sturgis is a neat place to relive being young, kinda of mosh pit place with kids crammed all around ya dancing,, late nite Sturgis on mainstreet is AMAZING - lots of builders/gearheads hanging out late - great bunch of guys!! Usually very good deals on tires and installs if ya need it during the rally.. Of course, huge shows, races and all that too.. Packin heat during the rally is a MAJOR no no!! NO ONE, other than SD Cops on duty at the rally are allowed to have em.. They dont care where your from, what licenses you have or even if your another cop - NO WEAPONS - and they take this veyr seriously.. Getting tired here, I will post this and edit it later if needed... Hope it helps somehow! Puc
