  1. TRIKEZILLA She'd be handful on the Dragon there Yammer,,, but ya sure wouldnt have to worry about crotch rockets getting in your way!!!
  2. Yea,, THAT is one fried set of points.. I have the same thought as Flyinfool, I always wondered why they didnt stick a condenser in that system if they were gonna use contacts.. VF, is there a way you could redesign the points using plug in connectors instead of solder joints so it would be easier to replace them on the roadside? Another thing about reading this thread, I had forgotten that the 2nd Gens had the fuel tank above the carbs.. Wish I had one, I would look closely at some kind of a high flow fuel petcock and see if there wasnt a way to use the "gravity feed" mentioned permanently,,, I HATE breaking down too - it ALWAYS seem to happen in the most inopportune times for me... THANKS FOR THE PICS!! Puc
  3. BUT YA GOTTA ADMIT, IT DID HELP GET US THRU THIS LONG, STUPID WINTER:225: :rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf::rotf: And pretty soon we will alllllllllll be riding together, chasing YammerDan on his gorgeous new Gen 2 RSV thru mountains and valleys... Stopping for some fresh cooked fried chicken and ice cream deserts and hearing all about why he named his biked what ever he chooses to name it.... Besides,, I love harassing Dan,,, he is just soooooooo harassable..
  4. Hmmmmmmmm,, I wonder if its caused by the wider bags on the 87.. All mine have been 83/84, just picked up an 87 (still dont know if its a runner) and YammerDan mentioned I may not like the wider bags - wonder if this is one of the reason why... Maybe your interrupting the airflow against the square edges of the bags by putting your knees out Silvr.....
  5. and Lord, please heal my friend Skid,,,,,
  6. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PINKFOOT!!!!! Hope the day was awesome and the healing is happening!!!!! Puc
  7. 6 votes to go and this is a done deal... The only thing that could really change the outcome is if something tickled the feathers of the non-voting, read only public and there was all of a sudden a mass move on the polls... Just so they know, no one can see who voted for what, YammerDan cant come after anyone for their votes cause he has nooooo idea who even voted so you dont have to be afraid of him... Go on,, push the button,, experience life in a democracy, ya know ya want to,,, cant you hear that poor unloved RSV sitting there all by itself calling your name????
  8. Hey John, some things you might try, take a look at the neck bearings and make sure they are set right. Sacked out springs in the forks can cause it - replace with progressives. Front fork oil (damping) can also cause weird high speed handling, drain it out and replace with 10wt Bel Ray - I use a syringe with a length of tubing to make sure my forks are equal in oil. Of course sloppy wheel bearings can have a funny effect and so can a loose swing arm.. That 1st Genny should run nice and stable well over 110 alllllll day long,,, actually, I always thought they were more stable at 120 than at 70 LOL.. Ya know,, now that I think of it, I have heard of cracked frames but never experienced it (knock on wood) - might wanna do some checking and see if you can find out what thats all about.. I am sure a cracked frame ANYWHERE could also cause some strange things... Oppppsss,, hi-jacked another one,, sorry Lewis...
  9. Just occured to me, a Meet n Greet doesnt necessarily mean a "ride your bike Meet n Greet".. Sorry,, been a lonnngggg winter..
  10. BlackOwl, your snow cant possibly be gone by March can it?? We have had lots of years around here that there is still snow around in March:confused24:
  11. That is awesome!! I wonder if this was done on that new highway that is suppose to have no speed limit, you know, the one specifically designed for 1st Gens... Nothing like good ol Texas Freedom:thumbsup2:!! Gotta go ride that puppy this year!!
  12. WAYYYY COOL LEWIS!! It would be a RIOT to have one of those Star Wars Storm Troopers riding outfits, then dress up a 1st gen to look like one of those Star Wars bikes!! Shoot bro, I would even settle for the Bat Man helmet!!! Really neat!! If I were wealthy I'd be dangerous!!!:rotf:
  13. Indeed Andy, gotta agree with you!! That Randy is the best of the best!! There really is something to the term "southern hospitality" and people like Venturous (Randy) are the epitome of that saying!! When you folks get settled in down there and want to have some biking fun you gotta visit "Jim's Honda" in Johnson City, Tennessee. Randy, does this sound like the correct name? Anyway, Tip and I were traveling down there a couple years ago and had a flat tire about 12 miles south of Johnson City on the main highway.. Hunk of steel went right thru a brand new tire.. A guy from the area on his way home from grocery shopping stopped, watched as I removed the wheel, hauled us into Jim's, they sold me a new Dunlop for 100 bucks and installed/balanced for 25. ENDLESS KINDNESS!! Sales guy inquired about our journey, ended up taking me upstairs to show me a MASSIVE collection of BRAND NEW vintage bikes - place should be a museum!!! You gotta see it!!! BEST WISHES as you guys make the move and settle in down yonder!! We will meet up with "ya'll" (get used to it) sometime cause FOR SURE, with all the great folks and GREAT riding down there - we are going back!!!! Oh yea, eat chur grits, days good for ya... Puc
  14. Yea right Bernie!
  15. Oh yea Bob,,, bet you'd be singing a different tune if you had just gotten another foot of snow in less than 24 hours like we did today:stickinouttounge:
  16. ""What it means to you That last fact, the low cost of repairing most motorcycle fix-its, may be the really important news for Harley-Davidson shareholders. It may help to explain why -- Harley's weak performance on the surveynotwithstanding -- CR says Harley owners remain the most brand-loyal of all motorcycle owners, with an astounding 75% saying yes, they'd buy a Harley again. The occasional small repair bill may simply be a price they're willing to pay for owning the most famous name in motorcycles. (And it probably doesn't hurt that Harley goes the extra mile to take care of its customers when an issue with one of its bikes does arise.)""" IMHO - While I really appreciate Consumer Reports data gathering and always enjoy going over the numbers, their interpretation of what those numbers mean leaves a lot to be desired!! "Low Cost repairs" and "Harley Davidson" is an oxymoron if there ever was one, the "return buyer" has nothing to do with how inexpensive or expensive a repair bill is.. Buddy bought a brand new Switchback two years ago, complained to the Dealer of major viberations.. Was told it was pipe related, replaced pipes ($700). Didnt work. Said it was compensator, was told compensator delete (running without compensator) would fix it, done no cost to him. Didnt work. HD backed out of warranty because compensator was removed and crank run out was found bad (all work done by them). Bike is now running again at additional cost of $2500, ended up replacing crank/cams.. Still vibes. Buddy is ticked, BUT,, would he buy another HD - of course,, it has nothing to do with repair $$ and everything to do with how they look, feel, sound, smell,,, and how much girls like em :rotf:(not to everyone but to a LOT of people)..
  17. """BMW motorcycles were even less reliable than Harley-Davidsons with about one in three owners reporting problems in the previous four years. Only about one in ten :bowdown:Yamaha owners :bowdown:experienced issues during that time, followed closely Kawasaki and Honda. Despite the higher number of problems, Harley and BMW owners were among the most satisfied with their bikes. When asked whether, considering everything, they would buy their bike again if they had to do it over, 75 percent of Harley owners said definitely yes, closely followed by 74 percent of BMW owners and 72 percent of Honda owners. By contrast, only 63 and 60 percent :confused24:of Yamaha and Kawasaki owners, respectively, were as emphatic in this subjective measure.""" You sure bring up an interesting subject Steamer!! We bikers play by a different set of rules for sure!! Another example that made me scratch my head.. Couple years ago I was standing in an HD Shop, admiring the bikes and noticed a Street Glide sitting next to an Electra Glide Classic. The bikes were exactly the same price. Salesmen tells me they are exactly the same bike (engine, frame..) with the only difference being the Electra had the tour pac, radio, extra trimmings.. I said, that dont make sense, why would someone pay the same price for a bike without all the extra's when ya could just unbolt the extras if you didnt want em... He said the Street Glide outsold the Electra 10 to 1!!!! Another interesting point is if you go to Ebay and look at the difference in the numbers of HD's for sale compared to any of the other brands,,, it IS staggering!!! Sure shows which brand is the most popular despite any difference in reliability... Personally,, I :bighug:em all...
  18. And President's Day is a perfect day to get er rollin!!!!!
  19. Congrats to the two of you!!! Hope you two have a fantastic Anniversary!! Puc
  20. Prayers up, threads to the top..
  21. WOW VF, THAT shirt is gorgeous!!! Honestly, in all my riding days that is the first time I have seen one of those!! Pretty dog gone cool, I can see why you "went the extra mile(s)" (pun fully intended) for that one. Wear it with pride bro (looks good on that bike too)!! Never worked on a 2nd Gen but HECK YEA, if it were mine and I could get the cover off the pump while its still in the bike I would definitely stick new points in it right in the machine = GREAT OBSERVATION!!! Please let us know how that works out:thumbsup2: Another thought too, if I were riding an RSV and knew that the replacement points for the fuel pump were the correct ones I would definitely have a spare set in my bikes "Maintenance Dept"!! Thanks for sharing the pic. Puc
  22. Sold mine months ago and bought a snow blower...
  23. http://t1.ftcdn.net/jpg/00/45/88/96/400_F_45889657_rvVstqW6TwiLQxADmtG62xkxeLLFnvVV.jpg
  24. WORD!!
  25. Awwwhhh man VF,, I hate when that happens... I agree totally with your thoughts, and everyone elses, sounds like a set of dirty/worn contacts in the fuel pump.. I have had exactly what you are describing happen on a couple of my 1st Gens. I always carry a section of fuel line in my bikes "Maintenance Department" that has rescued me in your exact situation.. By taking the vent line off the tank and attaching my spare line to it and than holding pressure in the tank with my mouth I was able to ride it a few hundred miles (got out of a bad situation). Later I was told these pumps were not repairable, got diggin around on the back of the pump and found a little screw under some coating.. Unscrewed it, pulled the cover off and discovered the points the other guys are talking about.. I just cleaned the points and all was well.. Now I carry a spare pump and have had one time in all these years where I swapped it out on the side of the road (lots quicker than rebuilding one on the highway).. Ya know,, this doesnt release you from showing off that Iron Butt Shirt!! Glad ya got off the highway and home safe with the bike!!!! Puc
