Dinner time,,, Prayers Up - Blessings Down!!!! Keep em safe, bring em home!! -
Well,,, "looks" arent even on my radar with these old beater Yams that are my riders,, I will defer a response on that to folks who know that side of em better.. I have bought and sold bikes for years (clean and shine is a big part of resale).. Its funny but when ya do something for a living the last thing you want to do is do the same thing when your suppose to be having fun.... I will say this,,, I have used a LOT of Pledge on everything but seats and tires throughout the years.. Great running,, long life,, hmmmm,, I would say, besides normal fluid change maintenance and keeping up on high wear items - brakes, tires, wheel bearings.. Dropping in some good progressive springs to save wear on the forks/seals and keeping good fork oil in them (they come stock with fish oil ya know)... The main thing I can think of is keeping track of air leaks in fuel management, carb diaphrams and carb syncing.. Lean conditions can destroy a motor, carb issues can cause all kinds of funny vibrations, imbalances, low performance and are generally not good for an engine......

Way to go Bay,, this will be a blast (really cool responses already!!). In order of ownership, by NO means an exhaustive list for me either (owned a LOT of junkers as a kid).. 1st car, 65 Ford Fairlane Wagon, smoked tranny rolling backwards down a hill and droppin into drive tryin to smoke the tires Rusted out ol Merc Comet, 260 V-8 3 speed on the floor,, had no floorboards - was a riot to drive.. 67 Cougar Dark Green black Vinyl top, 289, 4 speed, cammed up, LOVE its hide away headlights and rear sequencial turn signals.. 1970 Mach 1 Fastback, 351 Cleveland, 4 speed, Dark Green/Black stripes, factory "fake" scoop on hood with "351" on emblem on it, full gauges, headers/sidepipes, Cragors w/L60's rear, slots in front, traction bars, "Night Fever" airbrushed on rear quarter panels,,,, chick magnet - fun car! FUNNEST CAR I HAVE EVER OWNED WAS: Bought in 76 a 1974 Jeep CJ5, 258 6, 3 speed, chick was trading it in at a local Jeep Dealership for a new one, overheard a conversation between her and the salesman about her trading it in, he went inside for a second and I walked over and told her I would give her cash for her Jeep in the exact amount they were giving her for trade in.. Told her than to take the CASH and apply it toward her purchase of the new one and she would get a better deal on the new one.. Told her to call her Dad and ask him.. She did, I bought it on the spot!! She CRIED when I picked it up, was her BABY! It had just under 20k on it, BONE STOCK.. Thing had NEVER been off road!! Got 18 mpg stock,, than I started on it.. Put "6=8" Split Headers on it, removed stock single barrel (crazy thing had the float bowl mounted toward the front of the vehicle - everytime ya hit a hill at speed it would flood the carb) and intake (on these the intake and exhaust manifold were one piece) and went to the junk yard and scavenged an intake off a 258 ford motor that was separate from the exhaust manifold.. Stuck the coolest little 2 barrel on it you ever saw!! Out a mild street cam in it. Bought a set of 10" wide Chromies for it and stuck a set of 14" wide white letter Goodyear Wranglers on it (not real tall - only added 2" to body lift).. ALso ran Gabriel Highjacker air shocks... In the end it got EXACTLY the same fuel economy that it did as a stock rig.. I had it in water so deep a creek was flowing over the door rails and out the other side, it would FLY in the dunes, pulled more harvested deer out of the woods than I can remember, can still hear the screams of friends standing on the rear seat holding on to the roll bar for dear life, loved the sound of the motor winding up and still miss the flapping of the rag top with the doors off cruising around on a rainy summer nite.. HONORABLE MENTIONS: Several 283 Chevy's (couple wagons included) that got me thru some very financially hard high school years.. Bought as junk/purchased for 20 bucks each (at different time) - all with bad cam lobes that operated the fuel pump.. All got the same treatment, an electric fuel pump that I kept around for just the occasion, and I rodded the last moments of life out them,, destroyed them, took em to the junk yard and got my money back for the next one.. :rotf::rotf:

Welllll,,, cotton picken monsoons we have been having have created what appears to be a no win for our basement/shop.. Got a sump in and it does seem to helping a little but it looks like I may need to add a couple more, running out of time on getting it under control by Thursday:crying: There is ALWAYS a chance that our areas flood conditions will crest (its been almost 24 hours since our last massive T-Storm) and we will still make it down yonder:fingers-crossed-emo but mother nature sure has me:think:. I want to go ahead and send my St. Judes contribution in for our team - "Team Dingy".. I have Paypal and would like to send it out if someone would PM me a Paypal account or post one up.. Sure wish we could talk Mrs. Nature into sending some of these gallons and gallons of water out to those places that have been burning and are in drought,,,, just plain crazy!! Puc

In Michigan we have this "Catastrophic Fund" fee levied on ALL insured vehicles - cars and bikes - and ALL pay the same amount (last I looked I think it was 165 bucks or so every 6 months JUST FOR THE CF PORTION ON YOUR INS).. The "fund" pays costs over a certain amount when you are injured in an accident... That said, consider this carefully, if you are on your bike and get in a an accident you MUST have a car involved in that accident OR you have no access to the fund:confused24:.. There have been several legal challenges to this stupid setup BUT all have failed,, it seems the insurance companies are hooked up well enough in other arena's that they pretty much can do as they please... Also,, wasnt I just reading on here a little discussion about someone thinking it wasnt necessarily correct to "take advantage" of the insurance companies in buying a bike back, fixing it up, trying to get a clear title for a salvage bike and all that??? NOT TRYING TO START ANYTHING HERE or drag that conversation into this thread, BUT,,,, perhaps part of that comment was based on the fact that Insurance companies DO NOT LOSE (as pointed out by the comment about it being illegal for them to do so),,, we, the consumer pay for everything,, part of that is the rise we see in our policies... Something to think about..... Puc

72 240Z Datsun that I put 156,000 miles on with a stock 350 with the 327-350hp HOKEY SPAMOKEY RANDY!!! I drove my daughters neighbors GENUINE Shelby Cobra last year when we were out in Sac (he also gave me a Cobra Club sticker for my bike!!!) last year,,,,, that had that same "its a motor with a car wrapped around it" feeling that I bet that ZZZ had Randy :cool10::cool10::cool10:

I would LOVE to know the cam specs (not just lift/duration but with valve timing specs - overlap) for these V-4's.. I wrench back in the 60's at Sunoco in Fruitport,, I used to RUN to the island to beat the attendants ANYTIME I heard a "not happy idling" muscle car pulling in just to smell that unburned 260 coming out of em - OMG I miss that sooooooooooooooo much!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU FOR THE MEMS BLUESKY!!!! Those cars were so far beyond my reach financially - I LOVED EM THOUGH!! Yea,, that Larry,,, he IS one kind hearted soul!!!! I was gonna say some wise crack about it being because he is from Michigan BUT knowing of all the folks who have/are/will be contributing to the St. Jude cause from all over the world I really think its more of a heart condition that some folks just have,,, nothing really to do with where ya are from,,, some people just have a heart for hurting kids and my hat goes off to everyone of them!!!! Ya guys be prayin for/thinkin of Tip and I will ya,, we have been getting NAILED here with severe weather and having major flood issues.. I spent the day installing another sump pump in our basement/shop for flood relief,, trying my derndest to stay on top of it so it doesnt mess up our weekend down yonder!!! If things dont come around and we end up having to stay here I WILL Paypal over to Dingy (or whoever I need to) my contribution to The Dingy Team for the St. Jude kids sake (always protect your Team ya know ) ,,,,,,, certainly worst case senario but it is what is:backinmyday: Man its wet here!! Wow Bay,, I thought for sure we would up some of these,, ummm,, older guys like us who would still be ready to about those Ford/Chevy days (notice how I put Ford in the first:rotf:),,, maybe we really did teach em some lifes lessons back then buddie:cool10: I had an earlier 60's Mercury Comet with a little 3 speed, 260 V-8 in it that ran really good too!! Alot of it that cars advantage was what you were talking about with the Falcs and early Stangs,, Hp/wt ratio was awesome!! In my last several fill-ups, I have ranged from 44 to 48 mpg's, 2-up. A good rule of thumb is if you are running along and downshift one gear and without changing the throttle, you increase speed, you are not running at the most efficient throttle and you are lugging the engine some. In all my years of tinkering with this stuff I have NEVER heard that rule Randy:confused24: THAT makes soooooo much sense and soooo well spoken To who ever wrote that other "rule" that says - "ya cant teach an old dog new tricks" I got news for ya:thumbdown:,,,, an old dog just learned a new trick:backinmyday: THANKS RANDY!! Puc

Is there a bike being made today that utilizes fully adjustable bars like our 1st Gens or am I reading being the lines here Bill??

Hi Bay Yea, pretty incredible aint it... I theorize that one of the reasons behind that madness are the CV carbs our bikes use. Unlike non cv carbs, you are not in total control of the slide movement that is opening and closing the main jet in your carb.. Tiny changes in vacuum that are happening at slower R's while operating in your engines torque curve cause the vacuum operated slide to open and close more inconsistantly and create engine inefficiency.. When you get up into the R's more your getting into the Horsepower curve and into a much steadier vacuum pull and in turn a much steady slide movement making the engine more efficient... Back in the old days when I was a poor broke young man I couldnt afford a mechanical 4 barrel Holley for my little Chevy eatin 67 289 4 speed Mercury Cougar,, I went to a junk yard (Johnny Minks Junk Yard - had to love Johnny,, if he liked ya everything was a dollar - lotta great stories about that guy) and grabbed a vac operated Holley 4bbl.. Also dug around out there and found this great big ol column mounted Vac Gauge... Guys were always teasing me when I had that Vac gauge mounted in my Cougar,, these were the days of Column mounted Borg Warner Tachs (if ya wanted to be cool),, no body in their right mind mounted an ugly ol vac gauge up there.. Anyway,, I had soooo much fun with that Vac gauge,, it helped me eat lots of Chevy's , allowed me to get consistantly GOOD mileage (24 mpg on a cammed up 289 with L60's) , mainly cause I could tell with the gauge what my carb was doing at a glance.. I have always wanted to leave my tuning gauges hooked on my bike while touring for the same purpose.. I wouldnt be surprised with a little bit of finesse I could close in on 50mpg,, but,,, I know people would laugh at me havin a set of gauges hangin on my bike while touring,,, went thru enough of that from those Chevy guys before I whopped em:rotf:
