Stupid questions people ask you, or say, when stopped

I hear that Rickster and, like you, have had those same comments far to often... While I must say it seems like the older Tip n I get and the more of a sticker covered wore out ol highway conversation piece Tweeks becomes the less of those types of comments we get.. Besides contributing to me as a natural born show off and loving to draw attention to myself, Tweeks vast supply of stickers draw comments and induce discussions from innocent bystanders - they work if ya love to talk... Ironically,, they seem to work as well as going over backwards on a wheelie and laying in a pool of my own blood in front of a crowd,,, whole lot less painful too... I digress... The "normal" question we receive these days seems to be - have you folks actually ridden to all those places? - that being asked from very young children to very old people alike.. Every once in a great while we get one of those statements to which you refer.. I am a little different than some folks as I actually LOVE sitting around an old gas station or hot dog stand,, yapping with people for hours,, no hurry, no rush,,, just making new friends and sharing life,,, I spend a LOT of ride time doing it.. That being said,, I always formulate a response to peoples comments to create dialog and have successfully done so many times with comments such as the ones you brought up.. 2 years ago out in Canyon Lands National Park we had stopped to fill up our water jug.. A gentleman and his wife pulled up in their packed up motor home, got out to yap and the first comment was "THAT is a very dangerous way to travel, lots of folks get killed on bikes every year"... I looked up, brushed some caked on desert dust off my pant leg, smiled and said "you got that right, you ride one of these monsters ya really gotta watch where your going".. Then I looked at his motor home sitting behind him,, asked what year it was (gorgeous rig),, told him I had heard that some of those big rigs have had problems with roll over on corners resulting in deaths... Before long, he and I were under his motor home measuring wheel stance and looking at his suspention for weak springs and bad shocks - anything that could create a roll over... Later,, as we were standing there drinking one of the ice cold pops out of his refrigerator, the mood had changed a little and he looked over at his wife and Tippy standing by Tweeks and chatting... He looked at me and finally asked,,,, "so,, have you two biked to all those places".... -
Oh man, you are more than welcome,, ALWAYS a pleasure yakking bikes!! As the guys above mentioned,, I betcha you will be extremely amazed at how much better your pipes are gonna sound,,, that packing you are talking about will REALLY make a difference - give er a shot and let us know what cha think.. ALSO,, when you do the test ride on that Vulcan,, pretty please dont forget your camera,,,, besides having forum rules about posting ride reports without pics there are also those among us who are very picture orientated..

Few years back my cousin, who had very little experience on a bike and NONE in touring on one, decides he wants to go cross country with me... During the process of learning the ropes while out in Utah a big storm was in our path.. He motioned me to pull over.. Being quite nervous about riding out his first genuine out west summer storm he asked if I had any pointers.. I explained to him that rain gear is pointless, high speed is your best friend, tuck the legs in,, tuck the shield and peer either over the top in the draft zone or off the side.. We jumped off the back roads onto 15 between Vegas heading north below where 70 comes in.. By the time we got to 70 we had passed a number of cars - tucked into our bikes, lettin em buck... We pulled into a Sonic resturant burger joint right near the 15/70 exchange to admire the huge storm we had just rode thru.. Standing there talking in completely dry tee shirts and jeans, my cousin kept patting me on the back and telling me how amazed he was at how dry we were and thanking me for teaching how to ride those wild western rains... Few minutes passed by,, a couple in a van with a bunch of kids pulled in.. The lady got out of the van,, stood there staring at the bikes, came walking over to our table and asked if those were our bikes... Expecting some kind of snide remark about us not riding Harleys,, I reluctantly admitted that the old beat up Venture with the Mule Deer horns on it was indeed,, my bike... She looked at us both, shook her head and said "when you two went flying by us on the highway I looked at my husband and said - DA%^,,, if they ride that fast in a thunderstorm I wonder how fast they ride when the suns shining" -

Didnt notice in the ad whether or not they allowed test riding but,, if they do,, and knowing Larry,,,,, Being one to not normally and having a natural tendency to be a worry wort I thought I better ask..... Someone should have warned the dealership that once Larry gets er started he has a tendency to forget where the off switch is......

As well as that contraption is equipped,, I think the only thing you have to worry about disappearing is the Chiefs good sense of judgement and ability to walk a straight line after sitting there for a while:stirthepot:,,,,, only thing missing is a Rum Ball shooter!! I would say, if the brakes on that Honda Sabre looking scoot are any good and if that long lost relative of mine actually did tie his boat to his queen size mattress instead of going all the way down to the trailer frame,,,,,,,,, when he hits the brakes those low trailer tires are gonna be the last of his worries......

"""it is just fun to think about the possibilities..."""" That would go into my sig area with your name beside it if there was room Yuck,,, other than riding em - nothin funner than dreamin about the possibilities... I am the opposite on the Harley borderline thingy.. I love Harley's,, I think HD has done some AWESOME things with where they have taken the market for a 1920's air cooled tractor motor stuck into a bicycle frame... Tell ya one thing for sure,, I have noticed a huge drop in the stopping and working on broken Harleys while traveling out to Sturgis compared to the way it used to be,,, I am sure it has everything to do with the 07 and newer twin cam (after the cam chain tensioner problem was addressed)... Also,, from my perspective,, I admire HD for keeping the V-Twin market alive,, if it werent for them I highly doubt that that great big ol gorgeous Vulcan 2000 would even exist.. Our V-4's are so superior in performance, effeciency, durabilty, reliabilty and function that all bikes would probably be 1983 Yamaha Venture clones:stirthepot: if it werent for Harley,,,,,,,,, like you said,,, it is just fun to think about the possibilities...

Thank you for asking that great question! There is an old saying that goes like this,, "the only stupid question is the one that does not get asked" and you have proven once again the importance of understanding old sayings.. When the designers of Hawaii were in the process of drawing its Blue Prints they made an important discovery... One of the issues back on the mainland was the limited supply of ocean front property.. Demand for this property was so high in fact that people were willing to pay 100,000 times more for it than any other land... The buyers of the ocean front property were also more than happy to pay 200,000 times more in taxes on their ocean front property.. Obviously, ocean front property was a catalyst for real happiness for people,,, something that the original designers of Hawaii wanted to make sure their final product produced.. One designer, a man by the name of B. S. Themall came up with the idea of designing the new property so that anyone and everyone that bought property on their newly developed living area had ocean front property,,,, therefore everyone would be happy... B. S. had noticed that back on the mainlands - ocean front property ran in a straightline,, the land behind the ocean front was being blocked by the land in front of it from being ocean front.. The thought occurred to B.S. that if this straight line were more circular,, maybe even shaped like a wheel,, that the water that was very important to ocean front property would naturally surround the land making it ALL ocean front.. MR. Themall knew his idea was a good one, he met with some investers.. B.S. told the investors that he also thought they, the investors would also be happy as they would notice a big increase in their bank accounts as it was common knowledge that happy ocean front land owners will gladly give them all their money.. Mr. Themall's suggestions and idea's were put into practice and the making of Hawaii became a reality, a land surrounded water, loaded with broke - happy people to this very day...

Hey Yuck,,, THANKS for asking for our opinions - I LOVE giving mine!!! As you know,, there is a lot more to comfort on a bike than wheelbase.. Ya might wanna actually ride one and see if there are any issues impeading comfort that cant be fixed by optional equipment.. Perfect example of this is my love for the early Voyager 2's.. Tried everything imaginable to get the leg room, fabbed up extentions for the pegs (no small undertaking) - just not enough ground clearance.. Personally,, I like that great big ol 2000cc Vulcan too... It is a big, beautiful piece of work!! I also really like the Strat and have always liked the Honda 1800 VTX too,, love the Ultra Limited and the new Indian is to die for.. Now that I think about the big V-Twin market,,,, I really really have always liked the Raider.. Opppss,, got side tracked in my thoughts,,, after being around a pretty good mix of these big bore monsters I can tell ya.. On the Vulcan, keep an eye on the oil level - Vulcans like to breath their crankcase air and aspirate a little, adding oil at 2k of highway riding is not uncommon with em.. All the big bores twins are hard on rear tires, strats and vulcans seem to be the worst - price to pay for using coffee cans for pistons.. I am still partial to shaft drive so the VTX has a little shine there, a Strat belt change on the road is possible - Harley is an absolute shop job and even than not for the faint of heart - Kaw Vulcan I am not sure on cause I have never been involved in one but I would know before I headed west with one.. Also,, keep in mind that Harley has a huge options catalog and their aftermarket is beyond compare.. The Vulcan 2000, because of its limited production, will be at the bottom of the barrel in that world.. There, now ya know what I think I know... Put it together with any other opinions you get here and you will be way smarter than me!!!! Oh, by the way, loud pipes on a Harley running 85 for a few hours can get mighty tiring too,,, dont let that fake smile on your buddies face fool ya Yuck - noise is noise..

Hi Tim While I did like the handling on the 404's I have ran on Tweeks, I also found them to wear very fast - no doubt a LOT faster then the E2's I was used to.. I actually wore a brand new 404 down to the carcass on a trip out to Sac to visit the kids,,, playing in the desert - tire was gone in Moab with 4k on it... FYI,, I discovered Full Bore tires this last season in another on the road tire gone situation - CHEAP (70 bucks) and ended up getting 5k on it - I would go Full Bore before I went 404... Or better tires if cash was not an issue...

Ya gots ta lurn da reed ya prefert,,, da nu fedrel rools says "No Churt, No Choose, NO Soyvace!!! Seems to me that we are getting more new folks popping in here now with the new site,, could be just imaginary on my part though cause I am known to have imaginary friends, BUT,, either way - its great cause I like seeing new people participating and making new friends.. My only complaint,, if any,, is I was hoping to be blessed with more space in my signature area so I could include more family quotes down there - they make me smile every time I post something... On the same token though,,, cant have everything,,,,, but I can try!!! The transition was as smoothhhh as salt at The Bonneville Don,!!!! THANKS!!
