  1. ALRIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND BEST WISHES ON YOUR PROJECT MR. BUG!!!!!! I have built a number of chops thru the years,, including some pretty good sized (100 inch stuff) big torque motored bikes (LOTS OF 750 Honda's too) and have been amazingly successful at doing away with the top mounts on em. It is actually a pretty common thing to do in the custom bike world.. That said though,, none of these motors had a bevel gear that transferred all that torque into a rotational axis within the frame,, lots to think about there!! Plus,, you probably will want to tow that gorgeous trailer again too,, adding more rotational torque.. I have never had a Venture apart (one of the main reasons I LOVE em is cause I havent had to - just ride em till they drop and buy the next one) so I gotta ask a couple things Mr Bug.. Is that frame mount boss on the head or on the valve cover?? Valve cover would be an easy fix.. Can ya tell by looking at it that it is a clean break (not cracked thru)... Is the 2nd Gen frame bolted together like a 1st Gen (so the "saddle" that the motor actually sets in can be unbolted)? I would trust the stability of a non-bolted complete frame before I would a bolt together,, probably for the same reason you dont see a lot of big inch bikes with integral engines (using the engine as part of the frame).. Come to think Shuttlebug,,,, knowing you folks and how you ride - towing the xtra weight - spending all the time doing a frame up - I would fix right!!
  2. Yup,, I KNEW that was coming!! Hey you guys,, just thought of something,, didnt part 2 of "Back To The Future" take place in 2015?? Maybe ol Doc Brown was onto something when he said = "Roads,, where we're going we dont need roads!!!"
  3. Kinda surprised at that one... I always thought those Texas law makers got their ideas for motorcycling legislation directly from riding a horse - playing off the stuff I heard about why ya cant license a Slingshot in Texas (cause you dont straddle the saddle).. I aint never did seen no Cowboy giving someone a ride on a horse complete with two up saddle with an xtra saddle horn and an two sets of steerups... Sounds like they got some fironeers running thangs down yonder!!! Actually,, I am with Ang on the pegs (if ya have ever had to ride any distance on the back of bike with no place to put your feet -- takes some special balancing I tell ya).. The hand holds I aint so sure about either!! Remember the days of the passenger strap across the seat on the early bikes? Like trying to stay on a bucking bronco having your hands that low in the balancing act.. Was riding on the back of a buddies Honda 90 back when I was a kid,, found out that riding backwards and holding onto the tail light was wayyyy more stable than holding onto that thing!!!
  4. lets see.... Smokey Mountain NP Grand Teton/Yeller Stone NP Grand Canyon NP Was gonna guess the Sturgis Rally cause it is spectacle BUT I know its replaceable cause our rallys keep getting bigger!!!!!!
  5. Thoughts and PRAYERS UP for Jane and the rest of Boo's family and friends! Thanks Eck for keeping us up to speed on this!! RIP Boo!!
  6. Back in the summer of 2012 we decided to head down to Florida to goof around with the Gators in the Everglades.. Thought it best to give Tweeks a shoeing before we did,, went down and picked up a couple brand new Shinko's at a local shop and spooned em on just before we left... The old school GPS we use (tossing a coin at intersections) led us south by way of a place called Johnson City Tennessee.. Heading north of Johnson City on one of them VERY HOT ick-spressways (it was a balmy 105 degrees in the shade that day),, Tippy was pointing out the gorgeous mountain views , Tweeks was lappin up miles like a kid eatin a melting ice cream cone and me all stretched out in my longg distance riding mode when all of a sudden I heard a pop and felt "THE" wiggle.. Leaned back and told Tip to sit still cause we had a flat tire on the back and things were gonna get a little dicey.. Riding down a flat on a fully loaded, 2 up touring bike can be exciting!! Thankfully the hardest part always seems to happen at and below 20 mph which gives you plenty of time to let people around you know you might be using both lanes (this is where those ick-spressways are actually kinda nice)... We successfully landed Tweeks in an upright mode and didnt even have to use the highway weeds to do it - she lit perfectly on the shoulder!!! Just about the time I got the gear off her and her backside up in the air a gentleman in a pickup truck stopped to see if he could help.. He offered to run us back to a place called "Jims" in Johnson City to get a new tire.. Of course, being smart and not wanting to walk the 20 miles or so back I took him up on it.. As I was spinning the rear wheel getting ready to pull the axle, he stopped me and said "you got way more wrong than a flat - sounds like you got a drive shaft problem" - to which I replied - "I hear that clunk clunk too but I gotta tell ya - that is not a drive shaft noise - whatever made that 1/2 inch hole in the tire is rolling around inside of it".. He said - NO WAY!! I said,, I know - I been riding many many years, have had my share of flats and stopped to help lots of folks with flats and aint never seen nothing like this either!!! I told him I couldnt wait to see what was inside!! The folks at Jims treated us like royality,, moved us right to the front of the line (good bike shops do this when dealing with stranded bikers) gave me a super deal on a new tire and allowed me to stand there and watch as the tire guy opened her up!!! The piece of steel inside measured 3/8x1/2x1-1/4 and I still have no idea how it managed to go right thru a brand new tire!!
  7. Man oh man brother,, I walked right by past the PERFECT Sport/Touring bike today Mike and even snapped a pic!!! 2 up, 1 up, twisty carving - Bonneville Speedyway smokin machine I tell ya!!! Never owned an FJR but they sure look worthy - THEY AREGORGEOUS!! I have also wondered about Kawi's Busa motored sport tourer,, looks down right fun!! On another hand,, I have DREAMS of tossing a set of saddle bags, small wind shield, set of longer bars (so I could lean back a little) on a new V-Max and head for the open desert country!!! Best wishes on what ever you end up with!!
  8. This brings me to a very important question,,, how come when I click on the button that says "thank for this post" and than I see "Cowpuc Thanked for this post", it doesnt say "Cowpuc unthanked for this post" when I click on "unthank" after I have clicked on "thank for this post"... My puter is not working right,, heck of way to start off the new year!!!
  9. PRAYERS UP = BLESSINGS DOWN!!! WOW Dan!! A HUGE part of me is jumping up and down screaming - YES,, THANK GOD THEY FIGURED YOURS OUT!! Other side of me is saying,, OH NO - THERE GOES THE FRIED CHICKEN AND ICE CREAM!!! Really really glad to hear they are onto something Bro!!! Believe me, I KNOW the frustrations all to well of getting a handle on this stuff - that old saying of "getting there is half the fun" does not apply to health matters!!

How many of you remember listening to those Cheech n Chong records when we was youngens? Remember the one "able baker charlie to roger is a dog, do you read me over",,,, to which came the reply "someone's talkin pretty bad bout Roger man" ????? That said,,, like Prairie I click on the link to Don's step by step instructions for resizing,, read thru his posting until I came to "You will never find any easier way than this. Even a caveman could do it"... I about spit Pepsi all over my keyboard as the thought of "someones talkin pretty bad bout man" ripped thru my intellect!!! Dont sweat it Caveman,,, the Pucsters got chur back bro:Cartoon_397:

  16. Brother I dont know,,,, judging from the on the face of that pretty little lady in your avatar - it sure dont look like she is nun too unhappy... I gotta hunch we oughta take us a little VR poll right here,, right now, and lets us find out what the rest of our good friends think about this here question.... Might be surprised but givin this is spose to be a motorcycling family,,, I spect I know what the outcome will be... OK GANG,, WHAT'LL BE??? CARL THE AND HIS NEED FOR SOME PAY OR THE REST OF US BUMS WITH A DEEP NEED FOR PLAY
  17. If you find she isnt running on all four by hot checking the pipes as Fool mentions, ya might wanna check your plug on the cold one first.. Got good advice going here IMHO.. These motors really will surprise ya at how well they run even when they aint feeling so good.. Nope,, no return line in these old girls, the fuel pump moves fuel till the float needles close, then the pump shuts off.. Actually a pretty low pressure system compared to an EFI.. Sounds to me like you may have lost a diaphram too but, just for kicks you might wanna double check your over flow lines coming from your carbs for dampness,, those sneeky buggers can be running fuel out under the bike while your moving without you even noticing.. Also glance at the choke levers on the carbs and make sure they are closing all the way. Pull the cover over the air box, remove filter, start the bike, watch the slides as they respond to throttle, if you see one (or two) not responding - take a screwdriver and carefully push the non-responder open a couple times just to see if is stuck - it should open very easily and close on its own due to its spring.. If its sticky but stll moveable you can sometimes clean em without removing them by squirting them with carb cleaner and working em back n forth... Best to go ahead and pull em for a good cleaning and a diaphram check though.. If they are not stuck and not moving its a good chance you have indeed lost a diaphram but, take a real good look around the vacuum ports/lines associated with the dead slide also,, maybe got a vac leak..
  18. Yea Dan O',,,, but cha gotta admit bro,,,, I shore nuff fixed his little red wagon some for da first half of da ball game!!!!!
  19. IMHO,, AVERAGE sell price for a ridable - functional - 83/84 1st Gen = about where Calperiun is at on his = 1300 around here.. Half that for a good running parts bike, half that again for a non running parts bike seems to be about where I have seen em.. Like it or not, for some reason our beloved Ventures just never caught on to the masses like the Wing did and have pretty much been worth about half of what an equivalent Wing is = IMHO.. Another interesting of observation,, I have watched Harley prices doing crazy stuff the last few years.. Seems like some awesome deals continue to happen - lots of early twin cams out there for well under 6,, Evo's for well under 5.. What in tarnation has that got to do with our bikes you will ask... Well,, once again, IMHO,, Harley seems to be the benchmark in following business trends and determining sell prices for streetbikes.. It just seems to me that as Harley values go up and down, so does the rest of the industry - weird observation eay..... On another note,, I was watching with tears in my eyes and DRUEL hanging from my chin as this Yamaha V Max | eBay gorgeous V-Max slipped out of my vision!!!!! Wish I felt better, didnt have all these mounting medical bills and had half the energy I had not to long ago cause I would have LOVED to traveled down to Texas, stopped and bought Biker John's family, Squid and Lonna dinner and brought home my new V-4 Yammer!!!! Sorry Brenner,, got carried away,,,,,,,,, anyway,, I think your comment of "honestly what a buyer is willing to pay" is honestly, your best answer!!
  20. I sure hope I didnt mess things up for ya to bad Boss,,, had I of known you were actually WANTING some Wisconsin White Wash to play in I wouldnt have torqued those nozzles so hard on the Fool's machine!!! Oh well,, sounds like he did some Tweekin for ya anyway!! Hope you two are having the TIME OF YOUR LIVES up there sledding!! :snow2: Take the Ferry across from Milwaukee to Muskegon on your return trip! 23. Hey Auggie,, no idea about places to eat or what ever down there BUT I can tell ya that Pensecola FL has some AWESOME white sand beaches to camp on - and those crazy GI's at Eglin Air Base (if its still open) do some really hilarious stuff if ya just sit and watch em a while:stirthepot: HAVE A GREAT TRIP AND PLEASE - DONT FORGET THE for us less fortunate ones!! Puc
  24. Hey Natty,, I totally agree with the comments on here about 15k worth of damage,, I look at that GORGEOUS bike in the back of that tow truck and think to myself how many times I have stuck a 2x4 into frame parts and straightened em out, lopped stickers over broken plastic, slobbered wire feed over exhaust holes, tie wrapped saddlebags bag in place, stitched a seat with dental floss and on and on and I think - shoot man,,, that bike is good for another 300k:missingtooth: just add a set of:rudolf:and let er buck!! Seriously,, I am SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO glad you folks are ok, YOU DONE BEEN BLESSED - THAT is really all that matters!! Tell ya one thing though Natty,, you gotta decide for yourself whether or not you wanna stick around here and harass these lop eared varmints but for me,,, even if all this medical stuff that I am going thru ends up dissolving my being able to ride I am STILL not going anywhere!! You, me and all the rest of this family have wayyyy to many stories to read (live thru others eyes) and stories to tell about our biking days, pictures of us geezers wrestling with our grand kids and just plain being a pain in the neck, to EVER leave this joint!! I personally feel the same way about my VR membership as I do about my pea shooters,, they can have it when they peel it from my cold - dead fingers... (or until these Mod's give me the boot:mugshot:) No matter what you folks decide to do, no matter where your lifes road leads you, PLEASE always remember and know - you have friends and family here on VR!! Godspeed Puc
  25. Sure,, why not,, guy walks past me while I am sitting in a parking lot at a Dollar Store out in Montana cleaning Tweeks horns that I had just pulled off a dead Antelope and says "THAT SURE STINKS YA JA......) Couple of kids go rippin past in their little green Mini Van and I hear one scream "PUT CHUR SHIRT ON YA Ja........." Couple miles west of Albqurkee NM, little hole in the wall burger joint with AWESOME burgers!! Half starved and could not wait to bite in,, just as I sink my teeth in and jump back,, the waitress screams "THATS HOT YA JA......" Coasted almost 30 miles (non-stop) down into Kings Canyon NP looking for that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow,,,,, shiny gold at the bottom right in this photo caught my eye,, some lady walks behind me and says "THATS FOOLS GOLD YA JA....." Gas stations in Death Valley oughta stay open 24 hrs if they dont want people camping beside the pumps... Didnt stop the owner from pulling in and saying "THIS IS A GAS STATION NOT A CAMPGROUND YA JA...." Ok,,, maybe he smells funny, acts funny and that beard can look like a donkeys tail sometimes but he is ALL MINE and I LOVE EM!!
