Got a buddy who got himself a new air cooled, push rod V-Twin,,,, thats when all the fun started.. Actually, he started the when he went and announced that with just a little tweaking (turning off his electronic speed limiter), the torque of his new scoot would definitely carry him past the top speed of my beat up, run down old 83 Venture and, being twice the cubic inch, quite possibly do in my Yamaha R1's top speed too .. A friendly but lively discussion took place concerning the matter... It got long winded with me trying to explain why HP carrying in the upper R's wayy above the 5250 line where his Big Twin would explode combined with that higher R ability being able to take some major gearing advantages due to the wider range of usable power to his and him trying to explain why Torque is the only thing that matters,,, you know,, usual back and forth ... Back and forth and back and forth we went,,, what a REFRESHING blast to be back to :Im not listening toing bikes again... Farrr away from all this corona nonsense.. After we came to our usual dead end street, I tossed my hand written gear ratio math notes aside and did some internet searching to see if I could find some engineering support for my point of view:missingtooth:.. He did the same ... What I found is going to make the eyes of good friends of mine like Venturous Randy (you didn't think I forgot about all our discussions about gearing did you brother) flat out bleed with joy!! Talk about a POWERFUL tool in the right hands!! THOUGHT ALL YOU LOP EARED GEAR HEADS MIGHT ENJOY THIS = https://www.blocklayer.com/rpm-gear-bikes.aspx

Sure Patch,, gladly try to clarify.. I was speaking of the little Honda XR's and the 10mm oil gallery bolt you remove to check the oil pump status at each oil change or whenever the bike might be inverted,,,, this little bolt is located right above the spark plug = easily seen in the first pic in this ad I just pulled up on ebay = https://www.ebay.com/itm/1982-82-Honda-XR100-XR-100-Motorcycle-Body-Motor-Cylinder-Head-Valves-Guard/164046041794?hash=item2631e7f2c2:g:SfAAAOSwP2ddRFkt new I never owned or worked on one of the new Ventures that the OP asked about but my point in all that is/was that in pretty much most of the dry sump bikes (which I am almost sure the new Venture is being air cooled = gets the oil out of the engine to cool it) there is always a similar oil pump test bleed for the same purpose as on the unit constructed little XR Honda and I personally would not use a similar bleeder for an oil pressure line... That help?

Timing marks on 1st gen Venture
cowpuc replied to jfman's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Jf, according to the club's manual you will be using T-2 for the front pot... Here is where I am reading from = start at page 158 = https://www.venturerider.org/manuals/1986-1993%20Yamaha%20Venture%20Service%20Manual.pdf.. There is a fair amount of checking cam sprockets and stuff here too,,, just normal OHC cam stuff.. Also beware of rotational protocol on the crank,, I believe its counter clockwise only but its all in there... I know on ANY of the scoots I went thru in the past when it involved valve timing, I ALWAYS double checked my alignment marks and the like but I also ALWAYS, with plugs pulled and rotating in the right direction bias,, stuck a breaker bar on the crank and slowly rotated her thru a couple times to make sure I wasnt about to bend a valve = dont take much of a bump on a piston... I know and am sure you know all that but thought I would toss it out there... Best of the best brother,, get er done Puc -
Dry sump systems on air cooled engines like the one that, I am almost positive, the SVTC encorporates normally have oil gallery lugs in them that you bleed from any time you do an oil change to make sure the oil pump is functioning and not air locked. Usually its a screw (or two) that you loosen to bleed from.. Many wet sump scoots do too = look above the spark plug on an xr80/x100 = 10mm bolt in the head right above the plug is for exactly that.. Some people have used these bleed points in oil gallerys for oil pressure gauge apps on unit bikes but I never really found them useful/consistent.. The bleed points on a non-unit/pre-unit type of scoot that incorporates an oil pressure sending unit (I am POSITIVE the SVTC has one as this is one thing those reps out at Sturgis did let me check on) like even all big twin HD's after the F heads had should ONLY be used with each oil change to check the pump,,, the best place I found (and this is where I would look on the SVTC if I had one and was going to ride that hot puppy out in the desert) to "T" in a pressure gauge line is where ever the sending unit is located... This is customarily on the high/hot side of either the oil bag or the oil cooler if the bike has one...

Ya know Ben,,,, they say that lots of really great things have been discovered by "Serindippity".... Think I read somewhere that even sticky notes were created by such means... Now ya got me wondering if my geezer brain is crossed wired and that should have been "smeltndippity" and not serindippity as your Candied Smelt actually sounds scrumptous!! P.S. = last time Tip left me alone, like your bride did to you, thru "Steakensmokidy" I discovered that WD works pretty good at getting cooked on steak splatter removed from the surface of the broiler in the oven and may also work for sugared smelt splatterings on the stove top... If you try that though,, its not a bad idea to let your wife know that you used it so she can professionally clean the surfaces and your next meal dont have a funny,,,, WD40 taste to it that you discover by serindippity..

,,,, WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,,, ANOTHER AMAZING MOTORCYCLE RELATED REVIEW BY MY BROTHER AND WRITING CHAMP OF CHAMPS = VENTUREFAR:thumbsup::thumbsup:!!!! Headed there now my friend to review your review !!!!!!!

Yep,, times have changed... Use to be that grease monkeys depended on a full set of gauges to keep an eye on things.. Then times went to idiot lights (really,, what check engine lite used to be called) and nowadays it seems like even idiot lights are of no concern,,, much more worry about whether or not your scoot has blue teeth... Of course,, being the guru he is,, MiCarl is spot on IMHO... On the other hand Lawman,, before switching over to water cooled scoots for my desert riding needs, I spent a fair amount of time soaking up the GLOREOUS sun out there aboard air cooled scoots and ALWAYS monitored engine oil temps with a thermometer on the oil cap of the oil bag. I used em on my HD's and SOHC 750 Honda Chops back then and they worked AWESOME as those bikes were all "dry sump",, which I believe your scoot is.. I also did run one on a couple unit metric Yam 650's too that worked well but not as good, IMHO, as my dry sump scoots.. Still nice to monitor oil temps in some way though if riding air cooled in that region back then.. ,,,, perhaps oil blends have changed enough thru the years that oil turning into water by touring Death Valley in the summer is no longer a problem:missingtooth: I also used to plumb in an oil pressure gauge on my dry sumps.. Even my 1942 HD WLA had an oil light as did my later shovels,, I was one of those greasy little monkeys that never trusted those lights,,, I LOVED gauges..

A long long time ago,,, in a galaxy far far away,,,,,, back when motorcycling was all about something different, the kind of read you found here Sky was actually common place... I remember once while picking my way across the salt flats to see what was on the other side of all that salt I bumped into a group of guys out on the "ice" on beat up old bikes who easily could have been related to these icons!! Thanks brother!!

RATATATAT,, WHAT DO YA THINK OF THAT!! Finally a binary for 10/22!!
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,,, that is one PURDY little lead tossin varmint Tuffy!!! My son in law grabbed one not long ago,,, FYI,,,, for his birthday I grabbed him a variety of 25 Round Mags (both official OEM Ruger - thinking "BX25"s or something like that) and a few other after market 25 rounders... I also picked up a grip loader ( https://www.google.com/search?q=speed+loader+for+10/22&rlz=1C1AVFC_enUS750US750&sxsrf=ALeKk03DIGqQRVKN-pGuW7QRe879XihaqQ:1583383162179&tbm=isch&source=iu&ictx=1&fir=Zmt0MQ0UhXubNM%253A%252Cc-yZsrrrTtIfZM%252C_&vet=1&usg=AI4_-kQ7ck76VOVt_iIUuGuB33d-ReR-3Q&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi737L3wYLoAhVKZc0KHYfHClgQ9QEwEXoECAgQGA#imgrc=Zmt0MQ0UhXubNM: ) for him.. I have one of the loaders and they work AWESOME!! Only thing is,, the loader does not function with OEM Ruger mags.. All of the aftermarket mags I purchased (and I grabbed one for each manufacturer I could find to use my Sons birthday as a testing mags day) wforked perfect with no failure to feeds... LOVE your shooter brother = just gorgeous!! -
I had one like that that someone had repaired and it fell apart out in the middle of nowhere.. I replaced it with a cheapy aftermarket (was under 10 bucks at a dirt bike repair shop out in Moab Utah) res with the intent of replacing it was an OEM off one of my parts bikes when I got home but ended up using it for a couple hundred thousand miles and it was on that tired old scoot when it went to the bone yard.... Was no float switch in the cheap one but it was wayyy easier to install than OEM and worked fine..

WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,,, Iknew we was born in the same year but I didnt know you was older than me:big-grin-emoticon:!! Hope you folks had an AWESOME :Happy Birthday:celebration ya lop eared varmint!!!

hh Coming home from baby sitting my new born grandson and my ears start ringin like crazy,,, I think I know why now .. Back in the old days when YammerDan, FlyinFool and numerous other like minded lop eared varmints of similar mind to that of a much younger and healthier :stickpoke:Puc were constantly causing the VR Admin ,,,, either the (lovingly and respectfully =) Boss (aka Don) or one of those (lovingly and respectfully =) ornery moderators like Marcarl used to have to issue so many warnings, do thread deleats and so on and so forth so often that we offenders lovingly and understandably each other about "being placed on probation and spending time in the VR penalty box".. I formed the opinion and built a reminder inside of me to try to not take ANYTHING like you varmints experienced here personally.. Matter of fact, in private, I use to Dan anytime I got away with something that he was in the penalty box for and he would :stickpoke:me right back when the roles were reversed.. Fact is,,, even as good of job as the Admin here are at keeping things running smoothly and headed in a healthy direction by enforcing the rules that our VR Membership and the Owner of the Site (Don) have decided were needed and that are all spelled out in Forum Rules,,,, our monitors cant be everywhere and catch everything... Looking back over the years of fun and yes,, seeing some/being involved in some discussions that did go personal,, I gotta say - IMHO = THERE IS NO FINER/MORE FAIRER/MORE PERFESSIONAL FORUM ADMIN IN THE BUSINESS = WE GOT BLESSED IMHO!! Also, IMHO,, one of the very difficult things about stuff like politics (shoot brother,, I have even seen things sour and posts get deleted just :Im not listening toing motorcycles ) is that there is always something missing (body language?,,,,) when hiding behind a keyboard. Sitting around a campfire or yakking while spinning wrenches is always better.. About the Coronavirus... My daughter manages a medical lab (she's a Dr.) for a university hospital in the middle of the crisis.. Last I spoke with her, they were still waiting for blood test kits for the virus... California was OUT of Resparators also.. I asked if there was anything I could do from my end.. She mentioned that the hospital staff was fine but was concerned for the homeless in the area concerning the masks.. The main concern/reason for wearing a mask is actually for the wearer to contain coughing spit.. I offered to search locally here for her recommended "N95"s.. Local Menards had already shipped all they had to affected areas.. I did get what was left here locally at a paint shop and shipped a case to my daughter to pass out to the homeless who would wear them (there was a lady inline behind us with a case she was shipping to Korea)... In my case and IMHO,,,, for me,,, helping to be part of the solution keeps the fear/panic at arms length even with having grandkids and offspring out there in the middle of it all.. Prayer helps too! By the way,,, NO ONE,, and I mean NO ONE is turned away from an emergency room at a U.S. Hospital that I have ever heard of.. The homeless population outside the door of my daughters office are 100% taken care of as the need arises.. One of the biggest struggles in Hospital Management are Accounts Receivable (cant get blood from a turnip) and I happen to know that inability to pay and/or having an outstanding balance with a given hospital in the U.S. is no cause for refusing treatment even to homeless people.. Something else just occurred to me,, I know this wasnt brought up in this thread but you know me Patch,, always .. I don't know if anyone else has thought of this but,, one of the awesome things about having gone to a "for pay" site (besides having those wonderful feelings of paying my fair share in assisting with the costs of operation) is that "feeling" of cutting down on trolls and the like... It's sort of an extra way to acknowledge my agreement with following the rules.. Dont know why but thought I would mention that ..

100,000 mile review 2018 TC
cowpuc replied to PGR's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I still think it was the cassette player causing the low resale value Sky,, never even really thought about it cause I always thought all that modern day expensive add on stuff was just added maintenance when it came to biking BUT,, thinking about it,,, didn't cassette decks go out of vogue in the 90's? Probably wrong,,, like I said,, when it came to biking,, if I wanted to hear music I just sang to myself... Of course,, I am also one of those old school knot heads that still think having a small television screen down on the handlebars of a motorcycle is simply not a good plan,, IMHO of course ....... -
,,, trying to get my brain around the site of a bunch of Chinese people standing in a line blowing up those little packaging "balloons" ,,,, I always thought those little varmints (the packaging balloons) were filled by machines...

Congrats TZ and good on ya brother... One thing about it,, there are TONS of scoots in Minnesota for sale,, PLUS,, part of the fun of biking is trying out,, sampling so to speak,, all the great buys...

INDEED,, times have changed that is for sure... Gotta be tough being an LEO these days.. Still thinking the loss of life potential should have been thought thru more closely.. If it was all about absolutely protecting society, or if the biker would have done something warranting get run off the road,, the officer should have done that wayyyy sooner at a slower rate,, perhaps at an intersection where there was plenty of room for a higher chance of non-death.. BUT,,, tough call cause I wasnt there.. I got a really close friend who headed the local LEO.. He and I were out goofing off one day and he was telling me that local policy was no chasing crotch rockets,, no high speed chases thru residential/conjested areas, just to dangerous for all involved... Of course,, this was only for misdemeanor stuff,, speeding and all that... Same token though,, if they did get caught,, due to Michigans "Reckless Driving Laws" and that anything over 20 mph over can be ticketed as Reckless Driving,,, if you happen to catch one it's bye bye DL and,, if they happen to flee and do get caught,,, instant 5 years... Tougher outcomes seemed to do the trick cause,, after asking Paul about how much of problem not chasing has resulting in,, he said the issue actually very rarely came up at the post... When I was young I got chased a lot... Back then,, when a local LEO was able to catch me on my Mini-Trail,,, they used to take me home to my dad who was also an LEO... Usually the home brew of LEO punishment started before Dad's fellow brother of badge had a chance to leave the house... Actually,, I remember thinking at the time that I would rather spend a few days in lock-up and leave Dad out of it... Perhaps,, just maybe,,, thats the problem of the day... Maybe Dad's need to,,,,,,,, never mind,,, if I said that I would probably have the local child abuse enforcement knocking on my door

These days most of my love for spinning wrenches fulfillment is found in laying around watching YouTube.. Just found this one and thought it was right along my line of thinking/play.. Pretty enlightening.. I think they are onto something concerning the wet sumping cause possibilities with the new M8 HD.. Only issue I take (and it's just another IMHO's of course) is I would have suggested actually removing the piston squirters and re-lock tighted them as my experience with Lock Tight (whether blue or red) is once it is broken loose, it has to be re-applied to be useful.. Anyway,, thought I would share this with you lop eared brotherhood of the wrench varmints... What say you?

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS JACK!!!!

WOW,,, https://yournews.com/2020/02/28/1475672/harley-davidson-ceo-matthew-levatich-steps-down/ Soo,, here's my brainstorming suggestions... I think the days of yesteryear when High School's had "shop classes" that taught youngens there was nothing wrong with being a gearhead and promoted Auto Repair, Welding, Electronics, Hard Materials (included machining and foundry at our High School) and Wood Working (all areas that grease monkeys like yours truly spent my growing up years in and LOVED em all) had something to do with why, as biker boomers,, we are what we are,, IMHO of course. Then when the Japanese came out with reliable and CHEAP (our High School parking lot was filled with bikes during Spring classes, we had a Honda Shop in town that sold the 72 CL350 for 395 bucks = there were zillions of um buzzing around singing their lucious parellel twin, four stroke song ) bikes in the mid 60's and caught on to raising kids right by promoting the 69 Z-50 minitrail by linking with Sunoco Gas Stations and giving away Mini's and wrote the tune "Hills and Trees and Flowers and Bee's all lookin like a picture post card,,, get yourself a Hondaa" (funny how I can still sing ALL those early comercial songs - just like it was yesteryear = BET YOU CAN TOO) = ALL the gearheads in West Michigan were hooked for life and ultimately,, the market made BILLIONS AND BILLIONS of dollars of us!! Present day,,,, kids dont seem to care about being gearheads much IMHO... Phones, Puters, Texting,, VIDEO GAMES,,,... Something they do tend to care about though is this modern day thing of saving the planet and looking for ways to survive affordably in the process... Ok Mr. New CEO,, here is what I suggest... I think the previous CEO was actually onto something with the Electric scoot idea.. Thing is,, 30 grand is insane,, aint gonna happen,, face it biker world,, your over priced.. I am one of those hard core life long biker dudes,,, from mini's to mighties,, been there and now,, as your article suggests,, I timed out... My current mode of cross country touring (what I did on bikes in my early years, as well as dirt riding and then exclusively up to bike retirement) is a Hybrid Car.. Our Ioniq has a combined Engine/Motor HP of 140 horse.. It will run all day at triple digits and still maintain 50 MPG.. Running normal highway speeds it gets 60 mpg.. Play with its "Eco" mode in the hills at slow paces it will see close to 70 mpg... Brand new the car's MSRP was 24 grand... I STRONGLY believe that the first Bike Company that builds/patents a Hybrid motorcycle that (Electric bikes, as cars, are not going to fly = kids today are not patient enough to do the plug in trick and wait for ever to fuel up) exceeds +100 mpg, will run highway speeds and is comfortable enough to commute on, cruise on and tour on will attract those youngens like a new I Pad... I would suggest you start with a smaller machine in the +200 mpg range and then work up to full size bikes... Make them affordable,, say half the price of a new Hybrid car for the Touring Model (12 grand = your pulling in BILLIONS of dollars off a mature/fully developed market are over for a while) and under 7 grand for the smaller bike... This younger generation REALLY enjoy the technology of today.. They actually look for it to save the planet.. It's your job to make that connection for them just like you did for us in days gone by,, build a new markey... Bottom line Mr. New CEO,,, IMHO,, if you build it,, they will be there just like we were... Next step will help you draw them in.. I been saying this for years,,, you need to develop a training simulator similar to a flight simulator.. A modern machine these kids can climb onto,, have virtual cars coming at them and riding thru intersections as if they are on an actual motorcycle.. Something that monitors all their clutch/throttle/braking/eye movement/body language and on and on and scores their ability.. Sort of a living video game, motorcycle experience... Promote REAL safety,, show you care about their staying alive,,, something beyond just telling them if they strap a hat on they will be fine... Actually,, if you think about it,, its possible that just the above paragraph will become your new market,,, by gosh I hope not,,, a lifetime of REAL motorcycling was a life worth living IMHO... Puc

I watched this vid several times and noticed right away that the Officer made contact twice in the vid (1st time @5:23 in).. The second time he was hit hard enough to loft his front end and causing him to lose control and crash.. I did some digging and found out that the LEO claimed contact only happened once. A little more digging revealed the below investigation by a retired LEO motorcycle cop who clearly was troubled by the incident (found in quotes).. A little more investigation = appears a Grand Jury refused the case and accepted the officers explaination. """" Retired police sergeant John Clayton spent 26 years in law enforcement, including 17 years in the traffic division for the Charleston Police Department. Clayton says he spent 10 of those 17 years on the department's motorcycle patrol. He’s also a nationally certified police motorcycle instructor. On Friday, he watched the video from beginning to end. Afterward, he said the video raised serious concerns for him as a former police officer. "Based on what I've seen so far, I would have cancelled the pursuit,” Clayton said. "The risks are too heavy. The difference between a motorcyclist and a car is if a motorcyclist wrecks, he's got one way to go and that's down." According to the Berkeley Count Sheriff’s Office pursuit policy, employees must weigh the risk to public safety and seriousness of the crime before pursuing. Even then, a supervisor must approve. "It's a traffic violation. It's speeding,” Clayton said. “In Charleston city we would have never pursued this motorcycle. It just wouldn't have happened." When the video comes to the final moments of the chase prior to Clark’s wreck, Clayton says it appears to him Deputy Vansant’s vehicle actually makes contact with Clark’s motorcycle twice. The sheriff’s office and Deputy Vansant in their official statement and incident report said that there was only one instance of contact between Clark’s motorcycle and Vansant’s vehicle. “The deputy bumped him the first time, then he bumped him a second time,” Clayton said. “I didn't see where the deputy swerved to the left. Based on the video alone, you can't tell if it's intentional or not.” Berkeley County’s pursuit policy prohibits “deliberate contact between vehicles unless specifically authorized by a supervisor,” and only in a situation where “the use of deadly force” would be approved. “This didn't have to happen,” Clayton said. Deputy Vansant is currently on administrative leave. The S.C. Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

You varmints been following this? The new Indian Challenger!
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Looks like Indian believes there are plenty of others who agree with you on the TQ thought Patch,,, notice what the official "Challenge" from Indian is (see vid)!! Personally, I never really found the need for TQ in a bike beyond getting the load rolling and maintaining a given speed within the perameter of the weight of the bike + riders + payload.. Beyond that, forfeiting the higher RPM's required to get into HP land (above 5250 rpm's) because of using up reasonable piston speed limitations to aquire massive torque and ending up with a bike you have to shift like Semi Truck to keep it rolling is pointless.. Clearly, what the Indian challenge video shows/reveals does not mean alot to me - from a touring biker stand point,,, in all my riding days I have yet to see anyone towing a Taco Truck behind them on a bike:big-grin-emoticon: BUT I do get it.. IMHO, on bikes, spread the Cubic Inches out between multiple cylinders so you can keep a decent level of torque and are able to maintain piston speed parameters at R's up there (say, 8 grand so you end up with a real wide power band and dont have to shift a lot) so you can produce some awesome HP just in case you want play with the sport bikes:big-grin-emoticon:..
