Fuel Line Check Valve??
cowpuc replied to H2O's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Wow H2,, what you are describing sounds familiar to me but not from a fuel line prospective.. The hose with the connector in it sounds like a vacuum hose that maybe runs from that front cylinder.. Can you show some quick pics or maybe look and see if it slips onto a brass connection into the rubber boot (intake manifold) directly under the carb that feeds that front cylinder? The gas situation actually sounds like a stuck float valve.. This would cause some really strange idling affect (like the bike is getting way over chocked/flooded). The only thing is, the overflow tubes run down the frame back bone and empty in front of the rear shock and should puddle on the ground... -
1984 Venture Royale
cowpuc replied to rwhitehead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I totally agree with Freebird response R,, what you are describing is actually not that uncommon with almost all metric motorcycles (dirtbikes and street). Most of them (including your Venture) have a small lever mechanism attached to the shifting arm that bumps against one of a few pins that are imbedded into the end of the shift drum - this is what rotates the drum that the shift forks ride in which causes the forks to change positions to move the gear sets around.. Fortunately your Venture is like most if these selectors, if not all, and is have been located outside of the transmission area, making fairly easy to repair.. Unfortunately, the selector mechanism is located under the clutch basket on our Ventures, this makes it a little more difficult to get to BUT no where near as time consuming as pulling motors and splitting cases.. The job can be done leaving the engine entirely in the scoot and with minimal part removal - the pics I am about to share are of an engine out of the bike but this is not necessary. Here is a link to really good write up found in our Tech Section. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?40713-Clunky-Shifting If you look closely at the pics pay special attention to the 2nd and 3rd pic - you can clearly see the "pins" Freebird is referring to. Also look at the other pics and you will see the arm that rests down on these pins.. I have ran into a number of issues dealing with exactly what you are talking about and can tell you that almost 100 percent of times I have repaired a bike with the symptoms you are describing, the solution is found within the mechanism you are looking at.. It is not always the pins though (although this is VERY common) - I have seen broken mechanism arms - have brazed a few in bad situations (usually from someone coming down on a shifter off a jump), broken retainer springs (VERY COMMON), cam follower that holds the drum in place wears out (less common).. Sooo,, what to do.. That is entirely up to you.. Our mainstream shops around here will not work on bikes older than 8 years old either - its hard but working on the stuff can be a lot like working on old plumbing - more hassle than its worth (from a business standpoint). On the same token though, there are many smaller shops around here (and some dern good ones too) that will work on just about anything - I wonder if you have that in your location? You will probably need one to spin off the clutch hub nut for you, maybe.maybe not.. Another option would be for you to remove the clutch cover, take a peek inside and see what you think.. Never hurts to look,, besides,, it aint going any where like it is!! Never know, you might get inside there and find out it aint so hard and you will be our next VR Venture Guru!! PS and just a little inside gear head FYI,, if you do decide to take a shot at repairing it (they are great bikes R, getting older so they require some wrench spinning but hey - thats half the fun!!) you will probably find yourself needing a shop manual - save the bucks for the shop manual and pay the dues here - there are some guru's around here that Yamaha should have hired to write the manual!! Hope this helps! Puc -

My oh my,, I think I figured it out Jeff,,, take a close look at the list so far.. I wont say any names associated with this but one of my fingers started throbbing where a fork glanced off it during the last encounter at grub time with a couple of these varmints.. Maybe some innocent bystanders out there are concerned with leaving with all the body parts they came in with or something:confused24: -
What the heck,, must of really left an impression somewhere along the line,, hopefully it was on one of my better days Yep, @pbjman THAT sounds/looks like a doable challenge and a BLAST!! We get some time this summer it would be fun to chase that down!!

Not MC, but still looks like fun. My other passion.

Yea,, we got that sour weather here too John,, I think @Flyinfool accidently bumped his White Washer while he was out moving his bike around and it "poofed" some left over white wash out.. 100 percent with ya on riding that scoot like it is,, nothing wrong :Laugh:with a really fun:big-grin-emoticon: summer:big-grin-emoticon: of chasing the front wheel on a new, pretty much stock Rushmore Harley all over :63:and :dancefool:before even thinking of tossing a sticker on it!! You get to yapping with the PO you oughta ask him what kind of oils he used in it.. There are other wayyyyy more knowledgable folks on here (Don, Aussie Annie and others) who might wanna chime in but, my neighbor with the 103 that we put the cam in and did the heads on went with Synthetics of some kind on his (both tranny and crankcase) and he swears it runs cooler and shifts quieter on the Synthetics - seems like he is using Lucas Oils in his.. Also, a quick heads up on changing oils when its time.. It might not be a bad idea to do some reading and get familiar with oil drain plug locations.. I know from experience that everything that looks like a drain plug under there aint necessarily a drain plug.. Dont know if your planning to do your own maintenance or not but either way, its a really good idea to know whats what under there just in case that gorgeous scoot leads you folks up into the Yukon or something and ya need to change it out on the road!! You know, now that I think about it,, Harley has made a LOT of changes thru the years of the Twin Cam dealing with the oil pump and cam followers (I think the newer ones like yours will have a hydraulic system on the cam followers - MAJOR PLUS!!).. Probably be a really good idea to even ask your dealer about oil types and weights too!! Good thing that Rushmore aint sitting in my garage,, it would have to get used to having my tent set up next to it and have me camping on the garage floor next to it - at least for a few weeks until it got accustomed to its new home

Boy I dont know brother,, "Brooklyn" eay,, that puppie is just about the right size for a couple Fly Rods to fit in perfectly and Brooklyn is awefully close to "Brookie" (you guys have Brookies down there?),, sounds like someone might be keeping some :witch_brew:secrets from the wife again:sign07: BEAUTIFUL RIG SKID!! BEAUTIFUL FIND SKIDDER!!!

Well that kind of stinks dont it Spear,, gotta agree with you though - it sure would be a really good time to wonder down under and see some sites!! Sheeshhhh,, just thinking out loud here but if instead of 12 Dollars we were talking 12,000 dollars,,, that would equal 16,000 dollars:scared: (like if you were buying a bike from the States)... Probably not a good thing for US Exporting!! Oh well, thanks for signing back up for another year VR:thumbsup: - it would sure get lonely around here without our Aussie friend!!

I had an XJ one time that, believe it or not, had a bad second gear in it (it was a free bee trade in - basically the guy who swapped it in didnt want it anymore)!! Goofy thing was quicker than snot even without second!! It was a beater bike that I sold to a local kid for a hundred bucks - kid rode the thing all over (I actually seen him at our local "Bike Time" three years in a row on that thing).. Yep,, they grow on ya PB - hopefully having the xtra cash to toss into that RSV helps get you over your grief!!!

Now your talkin Champ!! Relic just posted some stuff about his new Harley and got me thinking about Don and his Glide. Being a newer bike and all, I wouldnt be surprised that his Glide has a 12v outlet on it (Don probably dont even know its there),, I am planning on pitching my tent within a short distance of his bike and bringing a 12v skeeter killer outfit to plug into his Harley.. If you and Dan promise to stay down wind of me, I will put the skeeter killer a tween us so none of us good ol boy's hasta swat bugs all night.. Probly run that Harley battry down from being on all night but thats ok,, we can push start it for him in da mornin to get em goin.. PS - NO BEANS and NO SNORIN EITHER!!

Haven't had a chance to even see one the new Scouts yet but I bet they are AWESOME!! Polaris sure did a beautiful job on its big brother!!! From the pictures I have seen, it looks similar to that Porshe designed Harley V-Rod motor - makes a person wonder about performance and all that!! Congrats if you get one Syl and looking forward to a ride report either way!!

Once again,, WOW ZZZZZZZZZZZZ WOW WOW WOW!! THAT IS ONE GORGEOUS PIECE OF MOTORCYCLING BEAUTY I TELL YA - CONGRATS RELIC!! AND WELCOME:2RED: TO YOUR NEW FAMILY MR. RUSHMORE - YOU WILL FIND FRIENDSHIP AND HAPPINESS AROUND THIS GROUP OF MOTORCYCLING GANGTERS HERE AT VR, WE CANT WAIT TO MAKE YOUR AQUAINTENCE IN REAL LIFE NOW :clap2::thumbsup:!!! Thanks for taking the time to do this Relic! I, for one, agree totally with XV!! I too would consider it an honor and a privilege to hear some of your thoughts about the pro's and con's of your new experience as they come about. I am VERY happy and excited for you in fulfilling a lifes dream of owning a Harley - I have a deep down feeling that you are in for the time of your life and wish you nothing but BEST in doing so!! Having been around a few of the newer Harley's, I can tell you that one of the fantastic things about Harley Davidson is that anything and everything that you can imagine in motorcycling is now at your fingertips!! I have two neighbors who have also purchased Limited's in the last couple years. One of them is a real wrench spinning nut of character and I have had soooooo much fun tweeking on his 2010. Along with some really fun engine mods that produced some amazing numbers on the dyno (106 hp/109 torque), we also did a quick release tour pack docking system on it so he can instantly create the neatest "bagger" look ya ever did see - a tinkerer could go on for ever :sign20: Hey Relic,,, seeming as its the Rushmore,, is this the high output 103? Tip and I rode one of the new breed water cooled exhaust valve models last year at a Demo (talk about a machine that beckoned to head west on it!!!) and it seems like the rep said the water cooled models were high output? Wonder what the motor company did different on them to increase the output and how much change it actually made to the "original" 103.. The other neighbor, Dave (he is the one who's wife we built the Sportster Trike for ), has 2012 Limited in colors similar to your baby - really pretty bike!! His is stock other than pipes.. I always told Dave that if I had one I would just ride it like it is till the wheels fell off - beautiful bike! Being a Rushmore,, I bet that sweetheart of yours has one of those new, fandangaled Harley "entertainment centers" up there near the dash somewhere.. When we test rode the one last year, that entertainment center was shouting directions at us while we were riding, turn left it says so we turned left, turn right it says so we turned right, turn left it says so we turn left.. Was thinking it had the demo route programmed into it so we rode and rode following its directions.. About 45 minutes later I told Tip that something was wrong and it seemed like the thing was trying to find its way back to its creater in Wisconsin so we headed back to the shop (we were in Michigan). Got back and the factory guys were TICKED cause we had been gone so long.. I explained to them what happened, they all laughed, said the "demo" was just suppose to go around the 1 mile block BUT they totally understood and hoped we had had a great ride (WE DID)! Later, one of the reps said that none of them were trained in using the entertainment center on the dash and that they didnt know how to shut it off If I had that big beautiful new Rushmore I would be on my way out west right now and would carry the operational manual for the entertainment system into the ice cream stores all over the country and study it till it and I were really good friends!! Hey,, its a start:sign16: Sorry about all the ,, I get excited when I am around people experience the fulfillment of a dream/goal that involves a gorgeous new scoot!! Thanks for posting this up WITH 's (seems like lots of our lop eared varmint friends like to forget that)!!

:sign Rock On::sign outstanding: Bob, congrats to you and your lovely Bride!!! Indeed, HERE'S TO 30 MORE WONDERFUL YEARS OF SHARING LIFE TOGETHER!!

Raggy,, I have used that cheap "Plast-X" stuff from Wally World pretty successfully and have been amazed at how well it works on Windshields - I wonder what it would do for recovery on your project.. I know it the stuff that comes in their more expensive headlight repair kits but I always just buy the refill bottle and apply with a rag.. Might be worth a try!!
