Dick, I just took the needle, my calipers and went to Ace Hardware, found the coolest little nylon shims that worked perfect.. Shimmed it down till I could tell it had a small starvation hesitation, added .030 off shim to fatten it back up and bingo - worked great!! She has been doing great every since (plug color, mileage, and still pulls good even a the miles on her).. I would also advise taking a very close look at your Diaphrams while you got her down.. I have tried LOTS of stuff for bringing "iffy" diaphrams back to life (I like testing products) and never had much luck with anything UNTIL,, I discovered "Yamabond #5 ".. Stuff is amazing!! Thought I would toss that your way for programming my name/location into those airliner cockpit controls and gauges!! Anyway, here is a link to the shim thread, LOTS of great info here from LOTS of folks wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more knowledgable about this stuff than I!! Hope it helps Dick!! http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?86325-Carb-metering-rod-question&highlight=carb+shims

:rotf::rotf::rotf: My friends are ALWAYS yelping at me when they ride with me about me getting us lost... Cant wait to tell them about my friend Flyday who does the same thing only with a commercial airliner full of people:guitarist 2::crackup: You be my kinda people Dick!!!!!!! Oh,,, by the way,, Tweeks is spelled with two ee's and no "a" in there.. Please write that down cause it sounds like you I are enough alike that you might just be apt to mispel her name (I could really could care less but that ol girl is kinda cranky and I really really really want to win a new Roadmaster)

Thank you soooooo much for offering Cominbackdown, I really really appreciate it!! I would prefer that you dont borrow your dads tools for me though, I just never had very good luck with that scenario and would NEVER want the possibility of something happening to your dads equipment because of me.. I do greatly appreciate the thought though my friend!! Indeed, its the little vibrating engraver that I was referring to Prairie - THANK YOU for your description.. Lets wait and see if Jeff happens to have one he could toss in his truck - appreciate the kind offer though!! Thanks guys!!

Yea,, what da heck Fool,,, never did even have a chance to meet this Freebird character afore - almost sounds a little cocky to me,,, or, maybe there is something deeper to his comment.. Maybe there are troublemakers around his joint we dont know about... Maybe you and I will have to do some vestigating - go around knocking on tent doors and asking if anyone inside is a troublemaker..

Hokey spamokey @Silverado6x6!! NOW we are talking cool and YES - I WANT IT!! I wonder if that "bling" (only calling it bling cause everybody's always yakkin bling and THAT is the kind of BLING that I would like!) is on the early models and then I wonder if its adaptable to our 1st Gen's.. If you happen to get a second, drop a link on here about it.. I will also do some digging on my own... THANKS 6x for getting my ol ticker pumping again!!

Noticed that Ohio's Bike Week in Sandusky is on during our stay down at Dons http://ohiobikeweek.com/ Thinking of ripping around the joint a little on the way home. Anyone know how far it is from the Pond Palace at Don's to Sandusky? Was just out yakking with Tweeks about it and she reminded me that I have never allowed her to enter into one of those bike show contest things (I am a little conservative and shy).. Figured what the heck, she is old enough to make her own decisions now.. Besides, may just win a new Indian Roadmaster or something!! Told Tweeks I have a couple of buddies that may just be able to help us out.. Thought maybe I could get @Flyinfool to bring the White Wash Machine. Then get @flyday58 to grab an airliner full of passengers to fly over Sandusky on Sunday and write "VOTE FOR TWEEKS OR ITS GONNA SNOW" in the sky.. Then get Jeff to crank up the White Washer at Don's after everyone has safely headed for home (gotta protect my VR family) and darken the sky just enough for those crazy Harley riders at Bike Week to see that Flyday's message is serious.. If Tweeks wins and I end up with a new Roadmaster I promise I wont put any stickers on it for 2 years = figure Tweeks has at least 2 more good years of riding left in her before retirement and then I will start riding the Indian and it can go about earning its own stickers.. Thoughts?

Flyday, the 1st Gen Mk1's (all I can speak for) have main jet control needles (mind went blank - cant remember there actual name) that are attached to the slides which are attached to the carb vacuum diaphrams. They hang from the bottom of the slides. If you pull the needles from the slides you will notice a fixed plastic platform on the needles them selves. I have done a fair amount of tuning on two stroke dirtbikes (and fourstrokes) and that little platform is not usually present - the needles were adjustable with and "E" clip on the needle. Tweeks (my 83) has got a fair amount of miles on her and a good while back, she developed the inability to handle the fuel effeciently coming thru the mains. I leaned her down by replacing that plastic platform with .015 nylon shims. A little bit of old fashion tuning and I found .065 of shim to be about what she liked. The old girl has been all over the country at that setting - she runs high and low altitudes like she used to and her fuel economy came back up. Plugs came to nice and tan.. I didnt pull the carbs and play with the jets but I have a hunch her mains are oblonged a smidgen.. In the course of that process I learned that one of our members, I think its Skydoc, sells a kit for doing exactly what I did. You could ask around a little and maybe Earl will chime in (HE IS AN AWESOME PERSON!!!).. If I were doing what you are talking about, this is how I would fatten/lean for altitude changes - IMHO.. Hope this nonsense helps in some small way! Puc

If someone would happen to have one of those small, electric engraving tools that they wouldnt mind bringing along and letting me use at MD on Saturday I would really appreciate it. I loaned mine out some where along the line and it appears it never found its way home - I PROMISE to return yours to you after a few minutes of use at MD Thanks - Puc

High idle with an overheat
cowpuc replied to Hard Likr's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
May be totally out in right field here Likr but I gotta tell ya, I have yet to own a 1st Gen (all 83/84's in my history - no M2's like yours - yours may be different) that ran below the 1/2 mark on the temp gauge once warmed up. Always 3/4 gauge.. Also, it would not be unusual from my experience for the R's to drop when the fan came on.. Also, the fans only come on when they do get warm (real close to red zone) so the bike may just seem like its getting hot when it is in fact doing its normal thing. If the bike is dropping R's with fan start up, it is possible that you have a weak battery or even a fan motor pulling hard BUT - even with a new battery the amp draw on that fan motor may produce an rpm change - IMHO.. Also, I never trust those anti-freeze resevoirs and that system (I am the same way with cars) and always have a problem with being nosey as to how much fluid really is in my radiator. There is a little tab on the actual Rad Cap on these bikes (again - 83/84's any way) that keeps the caps from being removed easily.. Couple weeks of ownership on all my 83's and that little tab is long gone so I can keep an eye on the actual rad levels.. Seriously, if your fan is coming on up near the red zone and going off somewhere right below that red zone - I highly doubt you have any form of an over heat condition.. As far as fast idle, figure out where that vac line goes, adjust the idle down if needed, spit check those headers to make sure she is hitting on 4, toss on a carb sync on her and go finish breaking that puppy in! Best of luck Puc!! -
Front brake frustration
cowpuc replied to Mad Dog's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Another thought, may try bleeding just the master first. Cover your bike so you get no brake fluid in places it should not be, unhook the line at the master, hold your finger over the bolt hole for the bango, see if you can get pressure on just the master by bleeding around your finger. May sound corny but those masters can be finicky on a fresh rebuild bleed.. Also, on final bleed, sometimes ya just gotta be persistent with gentle slow movement on the lever and watch for tiny bubbles.. Even those innocent tiny little, assumingly non-problematic, almost invisable little bubbles can cause a LOT of problems in a hydraulic system.. -
OUTSTANDING VITO!!!! Looks like you folks had a BLAST and that there Blonde in the pics is AWESOME!!

Engine sound
cowpuc replied to mralex714's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
It always amazes me how smooth our V-4's can run on 3 cylinders - they can be deceptive - where it really shows is huge power loss (Tweeks came to me on 3 - owner rode her for years like that - even enough power on 3 that he was happy). I would spit check the headers on each jug after idling a couple minutes just to see if its coming up on all 4. If you havent recently swapped new plugs in her, she may have a dead one that is firing once in a while - enough to cause a "thump" feeling as you are describing. These 10mm plugs really dont to like to even be blackened from a little over choking... Thats where I would start anyway.. -
I can see it now, like Gary's thread title - Don changes name of VR to "Ex-VR.org",, pretty soon every time I get to an "Ex-VR" gathering everyone will be sitting around talking about us - whisper's of gossipers saying "that's the guy still living with his ex"

Prayers Up and Blessings Down for both of my friends!!

:lightbulb:OR,,,, you could toss that Wisconsin White Wash Machine in your truck and we could use it for siting in my ought 6 with some of Raggies armor piercing ammo.. Maybe a couple twangs in just the right spot and it would become the first Wisconsin Sun Dance Machine!!

Not real sure but isnt there a short term thing with Social Security? May or may not have anything to do with your employer.. Maybe stop at a Social Security office and ask about it.. Unless they have changed unemployment law's greatly since I was a kid - I dont think unemployment would be of assistance (just thinking out loud and typing what I am thinking).
