May wanna start the repair process by taking a quick check on the 3 wire stator terminal under the left side cover.. What da heck brother, even if its a stator or regulator, its all repairable eay!!!!

That sure looks normally mounted KY, if you have the axle now off and could post a picture of the caliper bracket and the washer that is between the bracket and the swingarm both slid up on the shoulder of the axle - up near the two holes found at the right end of the axle, this would help us a lot in determining if all is correct..
  3. Maybe picture time?? If possible - could we see a picture of the caliper mount with the shoulder of the axle inside of it? Maybe this would help us understand exactly what you have going on WHat year of bike are we talking about anyway KY?

  6. You really got me on this one Ky.. Speaking from a fair amount of tire swapping on my 83's (no idea if the later models are different) I am wondering if you might be putting the axle in backwards or something:think:. The threaded end of the axle where the nut that is captured by the cotter pin goes on the left side - left side as sitting on the scoot. The right side of the axle (again - talking right side as sitting on the bike) should be the end with the shoulder. That right side shoulder does have a hole drilled thru it but that hole is only for line up purpose or for placing a screw driver thru it to pull the axle out upon removal of the rear wheel.. The sequence for reinstall should be, lube up the axle with grease a little so it dont rust in place, slide it thru the eyelet in the swingarm where the pinch bolts are located (right side) - threaded axle end first. As you slide the axle thru the eyelet with the pinch bolts loose, you place the washer on and then the caliper mount, now thru the wheel bearing on the right side of the wheel, keep pushing (rubber mallet may help) the axle thru the wheel, when you get to the shoulder on the axle it might reguire some bumping the axle a little more to get the shoulder to slide into the eyelet where the shoulder passes thru it. You will eventually get the threaded end of the axle appearing out of the left side of the assembly. I have always tightened the Nut on the end of the axle BEFORE I tighten the pinch bolts on the right side/eyelet. By doing so, this captures the inner bearing races between the shoulder of the right hand side of the axle/washer/caliper and internal surfaces - that shoulder is NOT suppose to pass thru the washer or caliper - that shoulder actually sets the caliper up for proper alignment of the caliper to the rotor - that is why it is important to make sure you have the washer in the correct place by placing it on the axle FIRST. At this point, the right side of the swing arm is now just resting on the O.D. of the axle shoulder. Tightening the pinch bolts of the swing arm now just secures the axle to the swingarm - the axle itself is captured by the large nut on the left side - the one with the cotter pin thru it.. You asked what would happen if those pinch bolts came loose.. While I certainly would NEVER suggest leaving them out, I highly doubt anything major would actually happen UNLESS the nut on the left side of the axle were also to come loose - that is the ONLY way that the axle itself could come out and if this did happen - a clevis pin thru the shouldered end of the axle would have no affect on securing it. Gotta imagine it is possible that the swingarm on the right side could become disfigured enough to wander off the axle though but I betcha the rider of the scoot would notice some funny feelings in corners long before even this happened. Personally, I have never, in all my years of playing with these 1st Gens, I have never heard of those loosing up.. I do think though that if slipping a clevis pin thru that alignment hole on the right side of the axle would add to a sense of security on your behalf - by all means - DO IT!!!!

Judging by the pic, guessing I am looking at a side car rig, looks like your foot peg was attached to that down tube - got stepped on and dented the down tube in, then who ever was stepping on it slid off and landed on the small bracket with the two bolts below it = bending it too? Hope I am correct and it wasnt some kind of an accident involving hitting something my friend..

  15. Wet plug wires (or other wires).. I would pull the plug caps, blast them and the area where the plugs are screwed in really really good with compressed air.. WD40 works good for water dispersion too.. Another thing that can happen if they get wet and what I am talking about happens is plugs fouling from their terminals getting wet. In the end, you may have to replace the plugs.. Also, depending on how wet she got, may have to pull the air cleaners and blow em off. May also not be a bad idea to follow up with draining the bowls to clear any water from them that has collected.. Crazy rain can sure mess up a good bike trip,, at least it wasnt in the form of that nasty stuff that comes out of Fool's White Wash Machine though:big-grin-emoticon:

Highly doubtful, about the only thing I can think of would be a dead cylinder from way to much fuel leading to hydro lock but if that would have happened during your ride you would be on here asking other questions.. Tweeks, our 83 with 300k on her now, came to us in the same condition. I rode her home after purchase on 3 - found the dismembered carb diaphram on the dead cylinder, put the diaphram back together, stuck in some new plugs, tossed on a sync and an oil change and headed west... She only had 28k on her then....
  18. There is a small bleed hole on the underside of the water pump case that allows AF to escape in the event of a seal failure behind the impellar.. You have to look closely to see it but its there. Might wanna double check that spot for dampness..

  20. By the way, a real easy way to check for fuel in the carbs is just open a drain screw on one of them (get a little bowl to catch it in - put it under the corresponding drain hose). Open one on the left side of the bike (closest to the pump), hold a bowl under the drain, turn the key on to ignition and you should easily be able to hear pump run and have fuel come out of bowl drain.. Make sense brother? If you need me to I can make a quick video and post what it should sound like? Might try tapping on the fuel pump a couple times if its not cycling - see if you can jar the points loose if their are stuck..
  21. Hi Lewis,, yeppers - that pump should run thru a "cycle" (not sure how long - couple seconds of run time for sure) every time you turn the key to ignition.. The only way that it should not cycle thru is if the bowls are full - must have a some kind of a pressure switch in its design.. If the bowls are not full, I like to turn the key on - let the pump cycle thru, back off and repeat until the bowls are full - you should be able to clearly hear the pump slow down when the pressure builds..
  22. Heyyyy - Hi Ya Bill!! Still here!! Just completed the 1st phase of trimming the Pred back (dropped to 2.5mg for two weeks), kicked my butt pretty good.. Had blood drawn today to see where the Adrenalin and "Adrodone"? is at now.. Now I am at 0 Pred with another blood draw this coming Wednesday (spoke with the Endo on the phone - wants to make sure I aint headed into real trouble = called something like "adrenaline crisis" that, apparently can be life threatening:confused24: Feeling pretty icky Bill.. Have HIGH hopes of feeling better by September but my dentist found a couple teeth with bad roots that he really really wants to pull (if not one thing than another around here Bill) and that is scheduled for the 1st - looks like ol Pucster is gonna end up with falsies of some sort:detective:... Havent felt like even looking at my party planner lately Bill,,,,, Will take a peek (or you can) for something in the mid Sept time frame when I get to feeling better.. I am sure my "helpers" will be available in there somewhere...
  23. Hey Bill, did you by any chance bag that Raider out and stick a Batwing on it? I have been a "Chopper" fan my whole life and, of course, that Raider caught my eye right away.. Was curious if you did anything with yours to make it 2 up touring user friendly? Any pics? Another quick question now that I got your attention @jakester,, how did you like the gearing on yours? Was chatting with a Raider rider not to long ago and he mentioned that he really wished it had a higher top gear - or maybe even a 6 speed tranny? Are those geared lower than, say,, a Strat or a Roadliner? Wonder if a guy could go up a tooth on the front pulley? Anyway,, do tell some experiences brother!!
