I used to market study Ebay a lot when in business to help determine buy/sell values, the "Blue Book" never seemed to work as it was usually inconsistent with true market values. Pretty simple really, just look the scoot up and see where bids are and check buy it nows and see where they are actually selling at.. To give you an idea here is a year 2000 of the model you are looking at, bike has 10k on it and he has a buy it now at 1750. High bid right now is just under a grand (reserve not met) with 3 days to go (this tells you a lot).. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-V-Star-/141810339307?forcerrptr=true&hash=item21048e0deb:g:rCcAAOSw5ZBWH9tc&item=141810339307 Considering those bikes, like our Ventures, have not changed much (to my knowledge) over the years and judging by looking at the above and others on Ebay for you (real quick market study verses the book, IMHO - 3 grand is high.. Now alllll that said,,,,,, buying from a friend to help em out - buying something with sentimental value - buying a gift for somebody that is exactly what they want and on and on, can be and usually is a game changer.. Best of luck Puc

I do,, I do, I do... Easy on gas, easy to repair sleeping quarters if they do malfunction and leak water (replace entire sleeping quarters for under $30 at Menards), small enough to park in out of the way places, fairly easy to maintain, a huge variety of storage areas.. Ours isn't self contained but does fit between trees fairly easy when nature calls.. On a more serious note Steve, Tip and I been thinking some similar thoughts. One of the things I have noticed while exploring our country's National Parks was the multiple area's in them not accessible to certain length vehicles - in some spots this is pretty short length. Another thought is whether or not you plan on pulling a trailer with bikes and stuff along - might wanna consider Diesel.. After looking around, comparing fuel costs from rigs to rigs I got yakking with a guy who was using a regular Semi Tractor outfit - I actually have a buddy who has a big motor home, pulls a trailer with all his bikes and stuff in it - guy with the Semi Tractor outfit actually got wayyy better fuel economy.. We had a Motor Home when the kids were little and did a LOT of traveling with it. We LOVED the ability to be "living in it" while actually driving down the road but with the kids grown and gone, I am not so sure that is what I would go back to. I think I would rather have a 5th Wheel Toy Hauler, be able to detach, unload the bikes and use the Toy Hauler section for a garage, be able to use the Pick Up for chasing around.. All the best in getting lots of great advice to your question.. Also in your future of finding full enjoyment out of what ever it is you end up with!! Puc

Now that is something I never really thought about, I can see where that added width would make for a much wider area of pot hole avoidance.. Seems like I read somewhere that the Sling also has a "stabilization mode" of some kind, may be wrong on that,, may even be an option? If your's does Larry, does that mode help in a situation where the back end may come in contact with a pot hole and try to toss the vehicle sideways? Maybe I am thinking wrong here, maybe its a traction control thing. What ever it is, how does that system work Larry - both literally and handling wise? Tip and I test rode a couple demo Trike Harley's (talk about a BLAST), really really fun in the twisties but I did notice a couple times in some sweepers where I hit some rough spots and that back end did some interesting things, not bad if your expecting it but I can see if some rough stuff caught a guy leaned back - feet propped up in long distance touring mode it could be an awakening experience - wonder how that would play out with a trailer packed to the gills in tow:think:. Never have ridden an independent suspentioned trike but am guessing they would be a little easier to control in the same situation.. Gotta admit one thing Larry,, for an old worn out biker wanna be I sure ask a lot of questions dont I:big-grin-emoticon:

Thanks Lar.. Are there any different steering dynamics involved with hitting rough roads on a conventional trike compared to your sling - that are +'s and -'s? I know you have ample time with both and I always enjoy your much sought after wisdom and thoughts brother!! Just thinking out loud here,, I have a hunch that if I had a reverse trike (Sling Shot, Spyder) I would figure out the sweetspot in navigating avoidable potholes and the like by figuring out where to aim to keep the pothole between the inner side of the front wheel and the outside of the rear - that make sense Larry?? Of course, the same rule would probably apply to a conventional trike were I ever to own one.. If I am on the right track with that thought,, is one type more user friendly and easier to apply that method of survival on the road?
-
Ironically Silv,, I was kinda thinking a similar thing about Crud the V-max Only I didnt wanna say nothing cause, unlike a video game with no cost involved - playing with Crud could cost cha everything - up to and including having your body being used as Dandeelion fertilizer so I figured I best no go there.. In the end though, I would still LOVE to go and do what Fozzy is doing,, thinking that ripping around a track for a few laps in a genuine Nascar might be a good way to take a break from everyday life around here

the over zealous driver of the Avalanche did in fact run out of gas creating a clear line of site for rambunctious detective on the Blue 1st Gen. Don was in the middle of explaining to Eileen how disappointed he was in her for not fueling up the Avalanche instead of being so concerned about an Ice Cream Meet n Greet and hardly noticed the limping Detective now approaching the Drivers window. When the sly Detective nocked on his window, Don

You make a point to something I have wondered about on all the reverse trikes (i.e. Spyders, Sling Shots...) that being, with a single wheel in the back I wonder if its harder to avoid pot holes and road debris than with a standard Trike. Anyone care to elaborate? @Marcarl, @Carbon_One,, hello,, anyone home,,,,,,,,,,,,, Made me laugh Rand,, I could picture a young Puc doing exactly what you mention here, gotta hunch your sister and her Isetta would have been a viable target even up here in the North country:cold:

Gritting his teeth in anxiety while he was driving, he was so focused on the thoughts and bad memories of the last time he had been around the group of lop eared varmints who generally attended these spontaneous Meet n Greets that Don completely overlooked the Detective from Homeland Security sitting at the corner when he and Eileen went by. In spite of Don's new Avalanche, the Detective recognized him from a picture he had seen somewhere, he also noticed the mysterious sealed envelope on the dash and saw the glare from the phone Eileen was texting on. In the mind of the Detective, this all added up to

At the next stoplight a kind hearted gentleman on a 2nd Gen Venture who had been chasing the guy on the now long gone 1st Gen pulled up next to Eileen. She rolled the window down on the Avalanche. The wax seal had managed to release itself in the commotion that had taken place a moment ago and inside the envelope she had found

that the sealed letter was still in Eileen's hand. It became obvious to the geezer that there was no way she was willing to drop the envelope until she had the chance to.. ,, tried and tried to get that to fit in the story:think: I think it somehow got posted in the wrong thread or something... Could a Moderator please move this post to the "Prayer Request" thread? Not being mean or or nothing like that, just trying to help someone not familiar with forum rules to learn how things operate around here..

My Father Decides to Retire From Motorcycle Riding
cowpuc replied to mhenderlong's topic in Watering Hole
THAT is an awesome story Hend - sounds like your Dad is one of those legends who has lived a life of LIVING:clap2::clap2::dancefool: Kudo's to him for knowing when its time to slow down a little and watch his son take the reigns - a wise person indeed. Congrats to you for having such an awesome Father! Now about that Sporty - they are GREAT commuter scoots, fabulous play bikes and a TON of fun! One of the things I love about em is that it doesnt take much me to make run and there are TONS of parts to play with out there for them if you should ever decide you wanna make her run with an attitude or just want some more torque or horsepower. They are very easy bikes to work on.. If it were mine and I knew it would forever stay in my family (if my dad had ridden one and done like your father did - it would stay in the family) the first thing I would do is begin the process of locating a "tuner" for it (being a Screaming Eagle I am assuming its EFI, if its not - forget the tuner). Pipes, cams, pistons, jugs and all the "hard" parts will always be easy to find but the genuine Harley Screaming Eagle Tuners (good stuff) for obsolete equipment can be very difficult to find and the tuner is an extremely essential part just for tuning (cant do much without it). I am excited for you my friend and congratulate you on being in the set of shoes you are in the relationship with your Dad.. THAT is the best part of all of this!! -
All this is part of the reason why it's normal practice for me to only take a small amount of the payment (a down payment) thru Paypal. Just to easy to get scammed. I too would strongly recommend handling the transaction just like you would if the guy had written you a check Rick. The old gotta wait till the check clears routine. I too have been an Ebayer for many years and gotta say, it is amazing how the ratio of scammers to good guys has changed thru the years. Lots of relists on Ebay due to things like your dealing with. Hope it all works out Rick, be patient - dont ship or release anything until its paid for and you should be fine..

I think I figured it out you guys. Its all in the code if you bend em a little.. Kind of a combination of "its easier to ask forgiveness than permission" and the "boys will be boys" clause.. What we do is all get Trikes to keep us riding well into our 90's and keep them happy for a long time(speaking in code).. Then we get old beater V-Maxes to play with when they are gone shopping for what ever it is they go shopping for............ I am in the process of testing the V-Max plan and so far it is working great - takes the "edge" off the need for speed and it has the looks (to them) of just another parts bike.. Roller, is the wing trike your looking at an 1800? They do make one very very beautiful Trike when set up right.. Never rode either the 1800 bike or trike but I have heard many many GREAT reports on both.. Personally I would be proud to try wearing out either form!!!
