First things first,, and a hearty Larry,, it not uncommon for the fluid to become dark over time as its used - gotten hot (that slave you asked about is right down between the forward bevel and the crank shaft/stator area = REAL WARM!!) - picked up moisture and all that. Here is good read on slave location and swap. Its a 1st Gen BUT, I am almost positive that Mom Yam didnt relocate the slave on the 2nd Gens like yours so it should be same same.. This was a rebuild on the slave BUT a swap out for new would be somewhat easier, removal is same and less chance of having to redo it if things went south on the rebuild.. Just depends on how far you wanna get into it. A new slave is available to order from any Yam Shop.. Here is that link: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?66302-Slave-Cylinder-Replacement

So, he brought me a Tractor Supply Adult Pedal Car that he no longer used. + So... I remembered I have this old driveway edger with a 3.5hp horizontal shaft Briggs engine and I have this welding machine, old sprockets and chains, etc:guitarist 2: + 's = Gonna get interesting around HERE soon TOO!! SOUNDS LIKE A HOOT BEAU!! -
Since I had the nerve to ask such a nosey question, I will go first I was 9. I whined and bugged my dad enough :Im not listening tothat he finally caved and agreed to split the cost of a scoot with me. He was supporting his family of 7 kids at the time by delivering linen for a living and found this 1959 Sears/Allstate moped at one of his stops for a measly 50 bucks - actually, back then 50 dollars was a TON of money!! As I recall, my half of that 50 bucks pretty much emptied my little black bank I kept hidden from my little brother who you see on the back of my beloved motorcycle. The pic of the two of us (a young Puc at the helm OF COURSE) was taken as I participated in our local Memorial Day parade - NO I didnt normally run around with crepe paper decorating my scoot and this was wayyyyyy before I discovered stickers . Notice though that I do have a grease rag draped over the front of the tank, I was always "tweaking" - even as a kid.. Still got the frame to that ol bike down stairs in the basement,, makes me every time I walk past it. Now it's YOUR turn:thumbsup:

I think that is the first pic I have seen of a bagged RSV @etcswjoe = LOOKS GREAT:178: Have always heard a lot of chatter about the differences between the Gen 1 and 2 concerning top heaviness brother.. You notice any major difference in that "feel" by removing the trunk? Also, you given any thought to puttin together a "quick detach" for the tour pac like they do on the HD's? Heard of anyone having done that?

To buy or not buy a new bike?

Not sure the handling characteristics would be the same between a Wing and a Flat 6 Bagger so they may not be able to give accurate info Deej,, just thinking loosing a bunch of high center of gravity weight should REALLY effect the cornering.. Years ago I "bagged" one of my 1st Gens (before Tip was able to ride with me) and was SHOCKED at the difference loosing the trunk and lowering the windshield made = totally different "feel"... Wait a minute here,, I wonder if these newer 1800 Wings have detachable trunks? -

@dustoff , I am not really sure if this is correct or not but I think if you click on my name anywhere on the board, then click on view profile, you should see something about accepting me as a friend.. Your welcome on the input, hopefully someone with more experience and info on the scoots chimes in cause I am looking forward to hearing from them too brother = what its all about:thumbsup:!! -

Try turning the machine off, reach around back and make sure the cable from the key board is plugged all the way in. If its a wireless keyboard you probably have a dead battery.

I think Harley's relationship with military contracts actually began back in WW1. I know that the original HD "Wrecking Crew", who somehow had a connection with where the term "hog" originated, came about between the two wars and they (the crew) had their beginnings over Harleys involvement in the war. That was way back in the "JD" type of Harley scoots - back when Harley's had those weird straight tanks that followed the backbone of the bike and were kinda long and rectangle shape. During WW2 Indian actually did produce and sell to the Military too, only about 1/2 as many bikes as Harley did though - the WLA was the most produced but I think both HD and Indian took a shot at a shaft drive model because the shaft driven bikes used by the Germans (BMW?) and Russians (copied BMW's) were way more durable (:think:gotta remember - those Beemers were gear driven primaries and secondaries - KINDA LIKE OUR VENTURES ). Harley did have the main contract with the Military though but I am thinking that had a lot to do with their relationship all the back to WW1. Them original HD guys were really savvy marketeers back then too! When ya think about it, there is an enormous amount of truth in what @slowrollwv was talking about as far as "rice burners" having their beginning thanks to HD too, A LOT of cloning going on. Amazing what came about because a couple guys got tired of peddling bicycles aint it,,, guess ol Red Green was right with his "Necessity IS the mother of inventions" quote

@WildBill1, being the curious type of lop eared varmint that I am I could not resist hopping over to the classifieds to take a peek at your scoot brother.. Couldnt find it:think: Pushing my luck a little further down the line here with my curiousity, any chance you could give us the inside scoop on what you have found as far as performance/ridability/comfort and all that on the new Chieftain? Do any touring on it? How did the Indian Dealerships/Polaris handle any issues you had? Good luck in your sale my friend! PS,, well,, there goes my + I earned for not hi-jackin the thread... -

OUTSTANDING ADVICE @Eck !!!!:clap2: That little synopsis should be printed up and ran as an article in all the major cycle rags across North America! Then a copy of all those magazines be sent to Mother Yamaha with these two sentences high lighted: 1 - My present age and how much longer do I plan to ride. If you can find a motorcycle that fits all the logical criteria and also makes you excited to ride, you've chosen well! Maybe THAT would wake her up to the fact that there are people, real genuine flesh and blood PEOPLE out here who have been waiting patiently for the brand new Yamaha 1700cc V-Max motored do everything VENTURE!!! PS - please take note that I didnt hi-jack this one, reading @dustoff 's final sentence: "I'm pretty sure there's no new venture coming out anytime soon or ever. I do love my V4 engine." is proof of that.. -
If anyone happens to know Santa Clause personally, could you do me a favor?
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Oh well,, probably not worth selling cause I doubt Evil is as valuable as Elvis.. May as well just leave it on that cool old scoot and use it to carry extra carb parts in or something... STILL AN AWESOME CHRISTMAS PRESENT BROTHER!!!! -
I read something about that along the line too Roller,, maybe over at the museum.. I know the Japs were producing Harley prewar "clones" and thinking there had to have been some kind of business deal like you say. Definitely played part in the future rice burner days!! I also know that WW1 and WW2 played a huge part in HD staying alive and had the reverse effect on all the other bike company's (and there were LOTS of em). I did a 41 Indian Scout that I picked up in as a basket case (and it was a REAL basket). I ended up doing a LOT of searching for tin for it and found out in the process that one of the reasons those parts are almost non existent (besides being very old) was because of the need for metals during the war - huge piles of Indian fenders and parts were melted down.. Thinking about that, even though Indian did build bikes for the war effort (bout 1/2 as many as HD to my understanding) they were melting down Indian parts to produce Harley's and Harley was charging the Gov more for those same parts (that is true!!).

OUTSTANDING TOOCH!!!!:dancefool::clap2::thumbsup: I take back all the teasing I have done about the Santa Clause feller,, he DEFINITELY has some terrific insight! THAT is EXACTLY what I am talking about!! I hope you told him that you KNOW I would be extremely pleased to find that puppy sitting in our living room come Christmas morning JUST LIKE IT SITTING IN THAT PICTURE! :lightbulb:Tippy and I could probably sell the Elvis lunch box hanging on it's side, take the money and put some new tires the scoot - maybe a new clutch and some new bushings for the tank shifter, toss on a carb rebuild and have plenty of cash left over for touring the country:big-grin-emoticon: She's a beauty brother = THANKS!! -
Indeed you guys, those were the days.. I was racing MX and Harescrambles back in 74 when HD came out with the MX250. Actually ran against a couple of them for a while. They ran pretty good but were heavier than the Elsinore 250's I was running. Also, competition was rough in the market - Yam came out with the Mono Shock YZ right in there and that created all kinds of problems cause WOW could they handle the whoops.. Harley only produced that 250 for a short time and was not real good with support so they became extinct about as fast as they came on the market. Interesting thing has been thru the years the value of those puppies:scared:, BIG BUCKS now if you can find one. I think it was Armachi (never could spell that) who produced the motors,, I am positive that it was an Italian made motor anyway.. Really looked trick and ran strong!! I was also into those AMF (oil leaking, parts tossing, work for three hours and ride for one) Shovel Heads back then, not as bad as the Iron Heads of those years (we always called em "Rod Tossers":big-grin-emoticon:. Had a couple of the shovels that really would have been better off had they of been used for bowling pins . Always seemed like the guys who balanced the cranks em intentially made em out of spec:big-grin-emoticon:.. Then I won a brand new 78 (AMF) Low Rider on a job site while I was Tig Welding for the Boilermakers. Crazy as this may sound, other than the rear brake caliper problem (well known issue - fixed it permantently with a valve spring out of a 283 Chevy - long story) I ran that thing all over the country pretty much problem free. Only reason I jumped ship after 105k miles was I got REALLY tired of getting scalped by the Harley Dealer every time I went in for parts (they somehow thought that the little HD stamp on the plastic bag meant that a 15 dollar cable was now worth 70 bucks). I LOVED the bike though, even named her Hoglia.. Time for her to go and me to move on = you guys are right on about "no one wanting those AMF bikes" back then - resale was TERRIBLE!! Shift gears to recent times with me for a second and I got some amazing news for ya.. The last few years of my business I did an AWESOME amount of Shovel Head business. Matter of fact, just a couple years ago I gathered up 11 of them over the winter and by May they were all gone!! Craziest thing you ever did see, sold like hot cakes.. Was interesting though cause it was only particular models in the AMF Shovels that I was able to sell (kind of like today EVERYONE wants a stripped down Electra Glide = a Street Glide and are willing to pay as much for a stripped down bike as they are for the exact bike with a Tour Pack that you can unbolt:confused24:). They FLH I could sell as fast as I could clean a carb, the FX's almost as fast but the FLHT was a no seller.. I was getting twice out of an AMF Shovel as I could get out of a 1st or 2nd year Twin Cam and the EVO's (which were way better motors, first change after Harley became Harley again and AMF was bye bye) were almost unsellable in any format except for the "Sturgis".. Seemed like for some reason people forgot all about the "AMF" deal we lived thru and went AMF insane.. Crazy world,, but wayyy fun!!

To buy or not buy a new bike?
cowpuc replied to dustoff's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Hi ya Dusty, nice to make the acquaintance of someone who shares some of the same passions in life,, this motorcycle passion is fun aint it? Noticing that Roadglide and the F6 have both caught your eye here,, they turn my head too so I thought I better send ya friend request cause we both think so much alike Personally, I think you should figure out a way to get a ride on one of those F6's before you make any decisions. I havent ridden one yet either and would love to hear what you think of them:thumbsup:.. I know that @Quickstep is riding one now, that would be @AussieAnnie 's husband, maybe he will chime in and tell us both how its going.. Thinking you will be able to get into a new F6 somewhat cheaper than you will get into a Glide. I have heard that the F6 is an amazing rider but lacking in the two up touring capabilities that the full Wing has.. Personally, if I were gonna ride one up all the time - I would LOVE to own an F6. Those Roadglides are AMAZING and beautiful too though. I know for fact that the newer ones, thinking 2010 and up, had the upgraded cam chain tensioners and oil pumps (about the only issue HD really had with the early twin cams) and are fully capable of long distance trouble free miles.. They are gorgeous scoots.. I always like to think ahead to the time when I am in your shoes of maybe wanting a new scoot and wondering what my bike will be worth for resale.. Seems to me like Harley's do hold their value better than most scoots. The Wing is not that far behind BUT, being an F6 - not sure about that.. As crazy as this may sound, I have yet to see one on the road in all my travels (which is really appealing to me cause,, well,, cause I like being "different" ) and I have noticed that our local dealer is still sitting on a couple left overs which makes me wonder if the F6 is gonna be one of those scoots that just dont catch on = effecting resale value.. I too LOVE the V-4 and would LOVE to see a new Yamaha Venture with a detuned Vmax motor in it,, brother, THAT would be awesome BUT, I think we are safe to say it aint gonna happen.. I have with dealers all across America about it and most, if not all, say nope - if Yam does a full tourer it will be a V-Twin cause thats what sells.. :think:Another thing to consider is how wore out and tired that RSV of yours is getting,, frankly,, its not .. Its just getting started .. Maybe get the F6 for one up riding and keep that GORGEOUS RSV for two up needs,,, if you do that we will have a LOT in common and I will definitely be expecting you to accept my "friend" request Thanks for the thread, all the best in whatever you decide!! Puc -
OUTSTANDING JF!!! Let us know how adding preload to original springs works for you.. Were you having any bottoming out going on with the springs before you did the reseal job? The reason I ask is that I have found factory springs to be pretty flimsy and easily sacked.. I usually toss in a set of Progressives and then add 3/4 inch of preload on those, run 0 air pressure and find for my kind of riding (which includes some off roading) that its the only way to keep seals in em and to keep em from bottoming. On the same token though, I also run 12.5 weight on my fork oil, have found 15 weight to be to harsh and could not get full travel out of my front boingers when needed.. Maybe running OEM springs with 15 weight will actually be the ticket.. This will be interesting!!! THANKS for the input on getting those collars off!! Never did that!! Always GREAT to learn something new! Oh, by the way,, I know EXACTLY what you mean about the fork oil being nasty,, probably never got changed in its life and if it didnt - I swear I think they come with some kind of fish oil or something in them from the factory... NASTY STUFF!!

What is this ?? And how do I get it off ?? Perplexed in Arizona..
cowpuc replied to KIC's topic in Watering Hole
Sure looks to me like if you popped that snap ring off in pic 4 and slid the washer off that is behind it you should be able to knock the pin out that the clip is attached to. Then swing the arms down to remove the shock.. It does indeed look like some form of a lowering link, never seen one before on a 1st Gen but have seen some very similar on my dirt bikes.. Might wanna clean the area around the clip real well so you dont drag dirt into needle bearings and all that. Also, be careful what you rap on that pin with so you dont mushroom the end of the shaft.. Thats what I would try next if it were mine... -
I am not making ANY plans cause every time I do something happens to make them fall thru.. This time I am not saying ANYTHING and hope we get to go!!!! :dancefool::dancefool:

Got to be guessing this weeks is Pumpkin BUT, if we are gonna get into a tit for tat on which of their vast pie list I can vouch for it has to be RHUBARB :stickpoke::bowdown::bowdown::bowdown:!!!!! And yep, gotta agree that just a tad of ice cream always helps BUTT (and that was not miss spelled) in the case of the Blue Line Diner's Pie - ice cream is NOT necessary for a person to over consume and become a true PIE BUTT RIDER Only the folks who have been there can truly understand
