"and the two shall become one".... 50 years of Marca + Carl = MarCarl:clap2:!! What an amazing story of His glory and truth of how it really can and does happen.. God Bless you two love birds as you celebrate your marriage of 50 years! Hope and pray you have a wonderful day of celebration - you both deserve it and so much more!! Congrats to you and to your entire family! Puc and Tip

Indeed Carl,, Bum is definitely batting 100%!! And then, on top of all this,, it only takes the smaller 1200cc MK1 1st Gen to put a good, clean whoopin on a 1300cc MK2 and,, in total disagreement with Yammer Dan's thought that it had to be a Blue one fo this to be accurate (RIP my brother), that stands for all MK1's - they were not color dependent on being kings of the Yamaha Venture lineage.. These little 1200cc also disproves once again that old myth that there is no replacement for displacement but double proves its all about the HP/Weight ratios.. It is odd that Mom Yam still has not caught onto this fact and steadfastly did things backwards and inverted with the Venture lineup by producing the fastest, best handling, most comfortable model of the lineage first and the slowest last with total progression in the lineage to that effect.. :lightbulb:maybe the whole world has been sliding into madness for years and current day global madness is just a culmination of craziness that we shoulda/coulda seen coming when Yamaha dropped the MK1 line

Cable and wire routing, front
cowpuc replied to DaNetFlunky's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
I do not have an RSTD to snap some pics of for you DA but I did locate the Cable Routing section in the clubs RSTD shop manual.. If you go to page 13 in the manual here, this is where the fun begins.. Are you working from/do you own an actual shop manual for your bike? This one is, apparently, for the 96 to 01 models and it may or may not be stretching it to think it also applies directly to your bike.. Maybe check it out and see if it makes sense.. If not, maybe see if you could still pick up a shop manual as, even going all the way back to my 83's, the manuals have a fairly good definition of routing.. I do agree though,, nothing would be as good as having someone take some actual 's for you but maybe this will at least get you started in the right direction.. DEFINITELY!!! Matter of fact,, this brings back to mind something that happened many many years ago when I was just a young Puc on two wheels and developing my own understanding of do's and dont's concerning center stand usage.. I was riding my 59 Sears/Allstate moped at the time (still have it's frame in the basement) and my good friend Dennis, who was from a wealthy family and very spoiled, was riding an AWESOME 80cc Yamaha with a 4 speed tranny.. We were at Dennis's house, parked on the concrete patio outside of Dennis's mom's kitchen where she could look out the big picture window beside her dining room furniture and watch us work on our bikes.. Both bikes were up on their center stands (his bike had both side stand and center, my Allstate only had a center stand).. We had just finished tweeking on Den's Yam's carburation that had been acting up, Dennis started his bike and it immediately when to high R's as, apparently the throttle was stuck.. I have long since imagined that one of us had failed to get the throttle cable fully back into the little cup that sits atop the slide attachment but that is neither here nor there.. About the time the little two stroke 80cc Yam reached its un-rev limited melodious peak R's,, probably in the 9 grand range, Dennis reached over and dropped the bike in gear thinking this may shut er down,, it did nothing as even a little 80cc two stroke when wound up to top R's where Horsepower is the name of the game has plenty enough umphh to laugh at the thought of being shut down by the mere load of the weight of the rear wheel being engaged.. Noting this, Dennis then pushed down on the little rack on the back of his scoot to force the rear wheel onto the concrete to stop its rotation.. When the rear wheel contacted the concrete, the rest of the little yamaha launched into the air like NASA rocket headed to the moon.. I watched as the little Yamaha actually got enough flight to clear the short distance between the foundation under Mrs. Duplisesses picture window and make its way completely into the dining room.. It laid their screaming at top R's with broken glass flinging from its rear wheel.. Dennis's Mom proceeded out the Kitchen door with a broom in her hand and eyes filled with excitement that was aimed at Dennis and I.. As I was rolling my 59 off its center stand I remember hearing the little yamaha shut itself down revealing a high pitched scream that was notably not of the two stroke type.. I patted my bike on her fuel tank and thanked her for starting up so easily this time as it, once again,, removed me from the trouble in my rear view mirror.. The End

aftermarket tachometer
cowpuc replied to Dutchtrans's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
Shalom and greeting right back at you brother... IMHO, Its probably just not calibrated to your V-4 and is calibrated for a two cylinder giving you half the R's that you are looking for.. I would look for a calibration button on the back of the tach.. Turn the ignition key off, hold the calibration button down and turn key back on,, release and then start pushing calibration button until the needle on the tach rises to 2000 rpms. Turn key off and back on to restart bike and check calibration.. -
Help with balancing the top heaviness of my 2009 RSV
cowpuc replied to dalesocha's topic in Watering Hole
Sure,, make sure your tire pressures are adequate, your neck bearings are lubed and adjusted properly and find a parking lot and practice practice practice (IMHO of course): 1st time we ever tried with an RSV 2nd Gen as you are asking about Dale - hope this helps (once again, please remember this is soley IMHO my friend): -
,, WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, JUST GORGEOUS BOSS = CONGRATS YA LOP EARED TRAITOR VARMINT (and so it starts again - WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, do I miss my friend and brother in grime/Yammer Dan!! Could he and I have fun with this!! )!!! Seriously Boss,, She is a BEAUTY my brother,, just flat out purdy!! I know that HD did some major upgrading on the cam chain tensioners thru the years.. The major down point of the 88 inch T.C. with their spring loaded cam tensioners and soft shoes for guides had long since been replaced with hydraulic tensioner and tougher shoe material on the 96 inch so you should be good to go in that arena.. I am pretty sure that the full on, completed project of the upgrade to perfection was not completed until the 103 was introduced (I believe) so I would still follow your manual as far as inspection times in the cam chest cavity just to be sure but I believe those inspection times were moved out to 50k miles = Something you will probably never see now that your a gee,,,,, now that you are riding less these days (almost got me on that one - I pick on you in love ya know ).. Personally,, I LOVE the T.C. and think that 96 inch is one of HD's finest motors. Combined with a 6 speed update,, ohhh yeahhhh,, that'll work big time!! Glad to see your back at it my brother!! I know Elaine does not ride with you as much as Tip still does when we sneak Tweeks out so I will do just cause here and remind you of something that Tip has taken a liking to reminding me of,,, dont forget to put your kickstand down when ya park it Boss Life is good,, as long as there is at least one motorcycle still sitting in the garage! Need a little input from my tech guys and gals
cowpuc replied to jakemiller93's topic in Watering Hole
Got some great advice happening IMHO but sitting up here in the, I have never worked on a 97 tour classic, peanut gallery - I am a little confused Jake. Mind if I shoot a couple questions past you? If not and you keep on rwieading here,, please understand that the following is strickly from a varmint whose only real experience with the Yam V-4's is with the 83 's.. You mention your base problem with the scoot is over fueling resulting in over flow from at least one carb bowl - correct? Then you lead on with the statement that the diaphrams look brand new and the needles seem to move freely.. My first question is,, are you referring to the slide diaphrams or are the float needle and seats in the carb float bowls that act as a fuel control valve operated by a diaphram? If so,, this is absolutely not like a MK1.. On the other hand,, if you are referring to the diaphrams that are attached to the slides in the carbs that have the mainjet fuel metering needle hanging from them,, please note that (at least in my limited experience in dealing with carbs) those needles are actually jet metering needles that only control the amount of fuel passing thru the main jet and have nothing to do with fuel over flow coming from the float bowl.. Concerning what I would do if one of my carbs on my 83 suddenly decided it was going to pass fuel out of an overflow. The first thing I would do is identify which carb(s) had the issue.. The next thing I would do is drain that carb and refill while tapping on the bowl with the handle of a screw driver - often times, at least in my expericence, this will dislodge a stuck float and/or debris from the needle and seat valve.. Another thing I have successfully done if the latter did not help was/is draining the carb, refilling the carb thru the drain with carb cleaner from a large syringe until it the cleaner flows from the mainjet into the throat of the carb - let it soak a bit - open the drain and agitate with the syringe and suck it out.. Then refill with fuel and see if that dislodges the issue.. If I have to physically open the carb up,, I open up all the carbs and redo them.. Murphy has taught me that he likes to play the old "I'll break this one first and another one 2000 miles down the road when you dont have your tools with you and you are camped out in the middle of nowhere" game with me.. Having faced that issue,, please note that some carbs are sealed on the float valve at the seat with an o-ring and NOT a compression washer.. Some valve seats are actually pressed into the carb body and are fit with an o-ring that sits in a groove and the valve seat.. Make sense? That being so,, it is not totally uncommon for those o-rings to loose integrety and allow fuel to bypass the valve and enter bowl uncontrolled and end up flowing out of the overflow hose(s).. Is any of that making any sense? If not,, dont be afraid to say "Puc,, you lost me back at line one" cause I am old and tired.. -
Ooppss,, just noticed we are in the Royal Star tech section.. Mike,, are we talking about the clutch in your 83 listed in your signature?
-
Mike does your 83 have a barnett clutch upgrade or any other alterations done to it? Heavy duty springs? Removal of half disc as it came OEM? After market plates?

,,, :dancefool::dancefool:,,, :clap2::clap2: = my directions were PERFECT after all :dancefool:!! You two are RIGHT where you should be at exactly the right moment in time for exactly the right reasons = I LOVE IT WHEN MY DIRECTIONS ACTUALLY WORK OUT - I AM SOOOOO PROUD OF ME,, I mean I am so proud that you followed my directions to a tee and have arrived safely at the corner of walk and dont walk and the outskirts of Kanuckian land!! Now LOOK UP above those little ships filled with people with yellow rubber suits on,, look up beside the water that is flowing over the big hill,, see that little walkway up there? Dont know if they still allow this since daredevils like you and I have began becoming a thing of the past but that walkway used to be called the "Hurricane Deck" or something like that.. I almost lost our daughter off that walkway once so be careful if you try to ride up there .. When done fishing in that hole below the falling water,, go back to my directions and follow them precisely,, you two and that gorgeous scoot are WELL on your way to a Carl Burger!! PS,, I strongly suggest you dont mention knowing @ragtop69gs as I have heard stories that Raggy is still wanted by those lop eared crossing guard varmints inside those little houses I mentioned.. Ye be warned.. Puc
-
THAT would be absolutely PERFECT Bum!! Be mighty proud to ride right next to you and your motorized version of one of Canada's FINEST Mounties ever to mount up brother!! You may or may not be interested in this but, in the spirit of helping other who may be wondering something.. When I post a youtube video here in the forums I go to the video I want to post, scroll down under the video itself and locate little "share" icon located near the "like"/"dislike" icons.. Click on "Share" and a new url will appear in a box.. Now highlight that url,, copy/paste it into our forum and BINGO,, the video will appear in the post.. Everyone of you guru's are constantly helping me out, thought maybe I would return the favor for anyone interested.. Puc PS Bum,, if you do such a thing up there in Kanuckian Land = 's you varmint,, TONS of 's and/or VIDEOS too!
-
WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, you two lop eared varmints DEFINITELY missed a couple lefts and probably a few rights in there too Mama.. Probably my fault cause I keep posting lefts and rights without explaining that when I say that,, left or right, when in the context of motorcycling - I am always referring to left or right as in when sitting on the bike looking thru the windshield - I am learning I have a real problem with not giving exact directions.. Sorry,, please forgive .. Soo,, you done got some eastern American directional lemons,, ohhh well,, what da heck,, what da hay,, you may as well make some Kanuckianland lemonade as long as your there... Now these thoughts/directions are going wayyyyyy back to a time when my kids were real little and just starting off earning their biker names and cutting their teeth on our 1st 1st Gen named "Beeg" while CTFW, tenting, sleeping along the eastern U.S./Kanuckian coastline so these directions may even be more confusing than the previous directions leading to Carls but I will do my best: Stay to the right until you bump into a HUGE body of water,, get off bike when you find water - maybe see a HUGE statue of a Moose,, walk down to water - taste it - if it taste like salt = GOOD,, now pitch a tent in the sand, get up in the morning follow that lake shore toward morning sun,, keep going until you cross into Kanuckians Nova Scotia's Land where Chevy's Nova's never were built.. Just after crossing into Novaville,, watch for Kanuckian Aquarium where you can pet and feed dolphins for free.. When it starts to get dark,, got back to the big water to drop tent.. Up in morning to flooded tent cause Fundies bay has massive tides but still fun chasing crabs.. Also,, after drying tent and sleeping gear, dig for clams for breakfast,, cook on open fire = very tasty,, eat before going up by road and discovering huge sign that says "DONT EAT CLAMS FROM HERE - THEY ARE POISINOUS" with some kind of red worm thingy.. Dont worry,, the sign is meant for Kanuckians as they are whimps and cant tolerate iffy food like us Yanks.. Now keep riding toward rising sun but drift to the left some.. A couple days ride from Fundies Bay while heading toward some amazing warm water between Nova Land and a huge island that this guy named Prince Edward lives on you will want to go Tidal Bore hunting.. I took my kids Tidal Bore hunting and they/I/we had a ball!! You and Moped will definitely want to go!! Bring extra skeeter deployment though to combat those Kanuckian skeeters and a really good flashlight for night time Tidal Bore hunting.. After a few days of hunting Bores and dodging mooses and drifting toward Prince Eds Island, you will come to Kanuckian Lands style of a big American zoo.. HUGE PLACE!! At this zoo though, you can sit on your bike and feed deer and other animals thru the fence with some of those apples you carry in a bag hanging on the back of your bike next to your water jug - you do carry apples and water dont you? When leaving zoo,, stay hard left toward warm waters.. Take off riding clothes and get down to swim wear underneath before going in,, its warm but still salty and salt is nasty when on riding leathers.. Lots more to do before heading backwards in Kanuckian Land towards Carls but fingers are tired.. Let me know when you get to warm waters and have pictures of all of above - especially after eating clams - and I will type more.. Hi to Moped,, :bighug:for you both!! Ride safe and remember - 80 kmph = 50 mph in the land of the big red maple leaf! Puc

:dancefool::clap2: ,,, :lightbulb:,,,, RATS!!!!! Can you imagine how much fun you and I could have if your Mountie outfit still did fit you and if I still had @Dragonslayers outfit and the two of us showed up at Sturgis for the rally and stood up on our pegs to put on a 1st class,, nothing but the finest,,, Kanuckian/Yankolian lop eared geezerdom varmint show for those wannabe's!!! :guitarist 2: Fear not my brother,,, I have it already scouted out should you/we decide to do such a thing!!

@divey ,, Son-shine,, just for clarity sake I wanted to give your thread a bump here.. I know,, I am old nnd often confused easily in this old age thing,,, it's a fatherly thing Son The water pump thought, as mentioned by Steve, was actually the first thing that popped into my mind as I have heard a very similar noise from my 1st Gens water pump thru the years on more than one occasion.. Matter of fact,, the original Tweeks actually did that for thousands of miles,, I called it her water pump chirp.. I carried a spare water pump assembly in her maintenance dept. for years just in case but that day of need ever came but it didnt.. Anyway,, the reason I did not double think it in your case was you mentioned being on the left side of the bike with the left side noted as the side the sound was coming from.. Son,, right or wrong, in my world,, I have always considered the left side of a motorcycle being mentioned as meaning the left side as if one were sitting on the bike.. Is/was this what you were/are to? Left side meaning the noise was/is coming from the same side of the bike as where your shifter/stator/driveshaft are located? Always something ain't it Dad
-
Yep,, Captain America is definitely not a v-twin (GORGEOUS SCOOT STEVE!!) and is definitely a Yam V-4 - RSTD.. Knowing that,, I would suggest starting him up and double checking whether or not he is hitting on all 4 by spit checking or using a lazer temp checker to check the temp of the headers individually as he warms to see if he has a dead cylinder.. Maybe the odor you are smelling is raw fuel collecting in a pipe. You may have a fouled plug from over choking or some carb issues resulting from sitting.. OR,, does the odor smell like hot battery,, with an acidity odor? Did you by chance toss an ohm meter on the battery leads to test/check your stator/regulator condition when replacing the battery? Reason I ask is that, as with all charging systems, failure in this area is not uncommon. A failed diode can result in AC current being passed to the battery and/or over charging due to a faulty voltage regulator can fry a battery resulting in odd smells and destroyed battery.. Wish there was a way to pass smells over these computers cause being able to give those odors a sniff may help in diagnosing the CaptN's issues..
-
Mama, but now the question remains,,, what did you learn about the new Venture? This is a test Did Moped get your bike back together and now you three are headed out on some great adVenture for the weekend:fingers-crossed-emo.. 's,,, we need LOTS of 's,,, for without 's it never happened!! It's the code ya know

Hi Steve and ,, :group cheers:!! Steve,, I am farrr from any form of guru on this stuff but maybe I can get you started with a couple things to look at before the real guru's and people who have actually owned/worked on a bike like your show up.. 1st off though,, let me say I did not know that Yamaha made a 1300cc Royal Star V-Twin and especially a water cooled V-Twin model.. I know that Mom Yam produced a large bored,, thinking 1100cc, V-Twin known as the Virago during that period but I am almost sure even that one was air cooled. I wonder if you could double check your model numbers and make sure we are talking about the same bike before the gurus show up.. Maybe snap a pic or two of your machine and post it.. That said and speaking in generalities,, I do recall having something similar to your situation happen to me many many years ago that prompted me to check my pipes/air filters 1st thing in a new season.. Running an old, beat up Ski Doo snowmobile with a single cylindered, fan cooled engine I discovered after the fact of a melt down that mice had decided to build a nest in the air cooling chamber/shroud.. That little mouse ended up destroying my engine which in turn, cost me a bunch of very valuable riding time and almost all of my cash flow (I was a very poor in $$ kid with big idea's of what was fun in life) because I had failed in taking the time to check my machine over carefully after taking it out of storage,, a mistake I learned from though.. That all said,, I think, regardless of what I was riding, in your case I would start by looking for mice nests in the exhaust pipes first thing - also check your air filters.. Another issue that pops into my mind would be to check the oil in the bike for gas contamination and also double check the coolant in the cooling system and make sure the system is functioning properly.. Right or wrong,, thats where this ol wannabe would be lookin.. Puc

I was out CTFW(S) when this happened and thankfully @Flyinfool ratted you out or I may have missed it @OrlinEngh,, WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, sooooooooooo glad to hear you two are ok Or!! Please let Sharon know we are praying for her injuries none the less!! Sorry too about the bike but what the heck brother,, sure sounds like you did a GREAT job on steering thru, with Gods help, what could have easily been a bad one and now you can work your magic on getting the scoot back up.. Fool told me about it,, ya gave the willies just hearing about it ya lop eared cheese headed varmint:Bunny2:... Thoughts and Prayers Up from the other side of the pond.. Puc

,, OUTSTANDING!!! Aint nothing I like better than sitting back and reading a high end, Professionally written motorcycle parts/pieces review by my west coast brother during a thunderstorm!! :rain2: Your articles ALWAYS make the sun come out Venturefar!! As always, VERY WELL DONE MY BROTHER!!!!! As I noted in the comments section of the article,, I greatly appreciate your honesty and looking out for the biker community Neil.. Wowzy wow wow wow Son-shine,, you sure enough came up with a good one here.. Good on ya!! With all this craziness going on about virus's and riots and stuff,, kind of good of you to get your old Dad to rack his brain some about bikes.. Almost sounds like your fuel pump coming on momentarily to fill the carbs maybe.. Then again, it almost sounds vacuumish or something.. I think I would pick up a cheapy stethascope from HF (got one hanging in the basement,, wish you were here,, we'd figure it out) or somewhere and see if I could pin point exactly where its coming from.. IMHO, it is way to consistant to be a dry bearing or one spinning a race,, those tend to be more random.. You DEFINITELY gotta let us know what it is when you find it!! Dad
-
Hi @WeeWilly and to VR!:group cheers: Around these parts the MK1 Ventures were 1200cc and ran from 1983 to 1985, MK2's were 1300cc's and ran from 86 to 93.. The 2nd Gens RSV (Royal Star Ventures) did not start in production till 99 and were 1300cc's.. It almost sounds like you have a non-Venture model RSTD of one of the Classics.. Just occurred to me,, look up at the top of this page and locate the "History" icon, click on that and that will take you to the clubs history page that shows all the different models,, excluding the V-Max of course.. I am thinking that may be of alot of help to you.. If not,, definitely feel free to come back here and give a hollar.. G'Day back to you my friend!! Puc
