Canadian winter - I had enough of you - I am riding my Venture to Mexico
cowpuc replied to jfman's topic in Watering Hole
Dont forget to double check those diaphrams,, they will exactly what we are talking about too.. No idea if there is a Yamaha shop down there? If so and you can find a tube of Yama Bond #5 you are in business!! Using carb cleaner or brake cleaner (I like brake cleaner - less residue) - clean diaphram real well, let dry, smear of Yama Bond over tear/pin holes - not to heavy.. Let dry over night.. I have ran on Yama Bond fixed diaphrams for years.. HAS TO BE YAMA BOND #5 though!! Have tried TONS of other stuff and nothing works like Yama Bond 5!! Also, put the smear on the diaphram inside the cavity where the spring is - not facing the engine.. Check those diaphrams!! All the best JF!! -

Yep,, all four will pop right off slicker than a whistle.. I dont run those lower fairings so I can easily get to stuff - if the lowers are still on you will have to pop em off to pop the covers.. Also, unless they have been worked on and a sane person put normal philips screws back in, there will be one little security screw in each cover.. If it were mine, I wouldnt even bother trying to find a security screw bit (Harbor Freight maybe),, instead I would take a punch and nock the little nipple off inside of the center of the screw and use an allen wrench to pull the screw.. Pop the covers, pull the spring, pull the slides, check for rips/pin holes, look inside slide, unscrew cover over Metering Rod, push the meter rods out and you will know instantly whether or not it has clips.. If it does and it looks like the notches are 1 mm apart I would drop em down 1 click to start with (1mm = .040).. If it looks like the are 1/2 mm apart I would go 2 clicks.. I ended up dropping mine 60 thou but I still think my orvices were oblonged... Make sense? -
INDEED,, NOW THATS WHAT I AM TALKING ABOUT:178::178::178::guitarist 2::guitarist 2:!!!!! WAYYYYYYYY COOL!!:checkeredflag::checkeredflag::cool10: There is museum I bumped into while riding out east a number of years ago... It was all about Glen Curtis - the airplane guy.. Anyway,,, that place was AWESOME!! I was with my brother and a couple other drifters at the time,,, we passed the joint at about 9 a.m. on our way across to Lake Placid.. I turned around and went back and they followed.. Went inside and :scared:,,, come to find ol Glen O' was not just into creating the Air Plane (was :stickpoke: with the Wright brothers) but was also into BIKES!! Those guys couldnt DRAG me out of that place - we ended up being the last ones to leave that night:rotfl: If ANY of you guys REALLY liked what Dix has posted here (AND I GO CRAZY OVER THIS STUFF DIX - THANK YOU!!) and you are EVER in New York somewhere up near the Finger Lakes, you REALLY must stop at that museum - IT IS HANDS ON OLD BIKES AND OLD AIRPLANES!! A lot like the Museum of Science and Industry is only this is ALL about us gearheads - YOU WILL BE SHOCKED!!! Sorry to this awesome thread Dix,,, you done did just get me allllll fired up!!

Something just dawned me,,,:lightbulb:I have heard rumors that Canadian Ventures did have E-Clips on the Meter Rods.. No idea if its true or even where I heard that from BUT maybe,,, possibly being a Canuck on a Canuck scoot you will be PLEASANTLY surprised when you pop the slides out of that puppy!! -

Good to hear from you JF - sounds like your having a ball!! No "E" clips and notches on the metering rods in our Ventures,,, wish their was.. Instead the Rods are held to "Factory spec" buy one plastic platform.. Its still fairly easy to adjust the Rod height though by using Nylon shims.. I did Tweeks a couple years ago, took the verniers down to Ace Hardware and bought a couple bucks of nylon washers. Found dropping 60 thou was PERFECT (figured that was 2 notches worth in the "normal" way using notches like your talking about).. Here is a short write up about it all that you may find interesting.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?86325-Carb-metering-rod-question&highlight=tweeks+metering+rods As I recall, Skydoc here on the site sells a "kit" to do what we are talking about - have heard LOTS of good info about his stuff and KNOW he is a great guy.. Only prob may be getting parts down there? By the way,, if you notice your diaphrams are pin holed or torn when you pull the slides you may as well not waste your time trying to set the meter rods - peeing in the wind if ya do - IMHO.. Also,, best to do carb sync after setting the meter rods too if you can borrow a set of gauges for a couple minutes down there.. If not and if the diaphrams have no holes I would just lean er down 60 thou and have at it!! and congrats on the no more water leak buddy!!! Ride er till the wheels fall off and have fun doing it!! LOVING THE PICS AND THE STORY - YEEEEHAWWWW!! PUC -
That Beemer is :178:.. Is that injected Godlover? I rode a buddies out to Lake Placid one year and he rode my 1st Gen,, may have been a different year than yours.. His Beemer would outrun my Venture PLUS it got over 50mpg - seems like it was a 6 speeder with over drive.. Amazing scoot!! He had some issues with his though,, seems like I recall some pretty pricey Brakes issues or drive shaft or something... What ever it was, it was covered under warranty but the $$ amount on the repair invoice scared him and he traded it in..... NICE SCOOT THOUGH!!!

Yep,, nice bikes.. I did one a number of years ago and sold it quick for 5.. Bike FLEW - had a high speed wobble that would scare the daylights out of you - ended up rebuilding the forks then it was straight.. Good sellers back in the day!! Things have changed majorly in the vintage Metric market though.. Right now a person can barely get 6 out of a good clean CBX.. Back when I did the CBF I also did a couple CBX's and those were 12k bikes all day,,, like I said - today I can buy the same CBX for 6ish - clean, running and ready to rumble.. Would be careful in the swap if I were you Godlover UNLESS you are just wanting and LOVING on a CBF.. Times are different... By the way,, here is something you lop eared V-4 loving varmints may find interesting.. If memory serves me correctly, that CB1100F was a one year model because Honda came out with the V-4 Interceptor in 84.. The 1100f was an inline and,, I am thinking Honda found something magic about the V-4 platform

Yep,, Haynes always seemed to be missing 1/2 the info and that 1/2 of the info always seemed to be the 1/2 I needed.. Go factory or dont go... Here is novel idea that my kids ALWAYS seem to remind me of,,,, """Daaadddd - you should try your puter,,, google - youtube and all that stuff,, you'ld be amazed at the stuff that's on the Pop's"" - they always say that.... Sooo - a quick googlely turned this up Cha,,,, worth a shot.. http://www.instantdownloadables.info/category/oldsmobile

Yeaa huh,,, my Mom told me once that she remembered when I was normal - it was during a time before she went around a corner in our car and I opened the door and rolled out onto the road and EVERYONE know's that Mom's NEVER lie!! Besides,, it takes one to know one and you know em all! Besides,,, I heard once that 99% of all adult abnormalities come from drinking poisoned water and guess who has been drinking out of the same pond as your's truly.. NAHHHHH NAHHHH DEEEEE BOO BOO:stickpoke::stickpoke::stickpoke:

ME AND BIG MOUTH ,, WE JUST JUMPED TO 2.09!! SOMETIMES I TALK TO MUCH:Im not listening to

Yea Godlover,, that Bossman is right on target,, we all wondered what in the wild world of sports and hot dogs happened to ya brother!! Good to hear you are back home!!! :lightbulb:about that double probation thingy,, it's not that bad really.. Dont let it bother you to much my friend, I know a couple lop eared varmints around the VR MC Club who have been on probation for years.... Come to think of it,, I have even met some that have been members since before the "crash" and they have never gotten off probation  Some other Club business,,, speaking about that new scoot of yours,, unspoken forum rules dictate 's,,, lots and lots of 's as soon as it rolls into it's new home ... Thought I would mention that cause I love ya brother and wouldn't want some sneaky rascal to add more time onto your probationary period...

Back in the old days I used to use 35mm film to clean the fork seals on my dirtbikes and it worked really well. I am almost positive that there is an actual tool made for this nowadays. Probably walk into any bike shop that sells MX Bikes and get one.. All you do slide the film (or tool) between the seal and the tube and drag the dirt out.. IMHO - 16 pounds of air is to much.. If your springs are sacked to the point that you need that much air there is a good chance your bike is ready for Progressives. Also, it is not uncommon to lose a little air pressure in forks, tires and the like over a winter storage. Sounds fairly normal IMHO.. While your filling those forks dont forget to double check tire pressures cause they usually lose a little too over the winter..

There is a bushing under the fork seal that also wears out. If you click the link below you will see it listed as part 5 - 41. That 5 - 41 basically represents part "5" and part "41" because there are two of them. http://www.yamahapartsnation.com/oemparts/a/yam/5004247cf8700209bc787e42/front-fork Its always good to check these bushings for slop when you get it apart and they are not under tension. Also, the stock fork springs are not of best quality. I have yet to have a set of stock springs that werent sacked by 30k on all my 1st Gens. Sacked springs are hard on seals too (IMHO). Its a REALLY good idea to drop in a set of Progressives if yours are sacked - I like 3/4 inch of preload on my Progressives and never use air after swapping em out. I also like 12.5 weight Bell Ray Fork oil for the refill - gives a good ride.
