Bongo,, that naming thing is something that has to be earned - historically it takes at least 3 days of touring for the process to even begin - right now this new one is still hiding the corner of the garage staring at Tweeks with a look of "what on earth have a gotten myself into" written all over it..
  3. OUTSTANDING AND TO ALL OF THE VENTUROUS RANDY FAMILY!!!! Having a working computer is pretty cool too but, WOWZY BROTHER = A NEW GRAND CHILD!!! Oh yea,, I really really feel bad going here but the law is the law,,,,,,,,,,,, ok,,, I just cant do it,,, that "this thread is worthless without pics" is just to,, just to,,,, just to icky when it involves grand kids,,,,, how bout we just say pretty please and leave it at that,,,,,

Something else here Kiwi,, I cant help but wonder if I may have been misleading in answering the original posters question.. @Nate, if your still following this thread,,, if you look carefully at the picture Z posted you can see the shift lever pointing downward in front of the foot peg. Look closely at the shift lever and notice the linkage adjustment screw hanging downward still attached to the shift lever. Unseen in the picture is the clamping end that slides over the shift shaft that is shown in the picture at about 4:30 off the flywheel.. What Z mentioned is absolutely right on target - you simply remove the bolt on the clamp that attaches to the outside splined end of the shift shaft (maybe a small screw driver nocked into the slot on the clamp to open it just a little) and slide it off.. Also not a bad idea to take a mental note of the position of the clamp on the shift shaft (small alignment punch marks with prick punch work GREAT for this) to get the realignment correct is not a bad idea.. Removing the cover after removing the clamp is fairly straight forward - with out removing the clamp could be really problematic...
  5. Your batting 100% with my memory here Kiwi - GOOD THOUGHT - it does seem like the outer end of the shaft that would go into the case may have had more of a bevel on it, or something like that... Seems like there was also a thrust washer involved too - now ya got my head swimming brother - think I will take a peek on a parts fisch somewhere as I am also going by memory here...

What a SWEETHEART this new one is Dave - this could easily be the fulfillment of that old saying about jacking up the radiator cap and driving a new car under it
  7. What an incredible,, almost unbelievable story, this next phase of life in the fast land of owning Yamaha MK1 1st Gen Ventures today has been.. First, allow me to state that I am forever grateful to my dear friend and fellow motorcyclists Carbon One and his wife Joyce for the care they took in safe guarding #6 for Tip and I all the years they owned her. I also would like to, again, state how thankful I am for our website - VentureRider.org - and what it has meant to us in developing life long friendships and in the loving kinship we all share around these amazing bikes. I would also really like to thank a person known to me as "DenDen" (Larry or @ragtop69gs - correct me if I am wrong on that name please) for all the amazing work he did on our new bike.. Larry and I went over some of DenDen's maintenance notes (WOW - IMPECCABLE) and I was FLABBERGASTED as what I saw.. It is fairly easy to look at this amazing piece of formidable motorcycling history and see by its outward appearance that this is no ordinary 1st Gen Standard.. While never really being one to be attracted to Safety Chrome and the like, I really really have to admit - this doll is GORGEOUS!! There are other things found deep within the heart of this precious old girl that actually do more than make my eyes bug out though.. Months ago when Larry mentioned to me that he really felt in his heart that this bike was going to someday find it's home and new life in the hands of Tip and I he was telling me that this particular scoot had had the 2nd gear issue dealt with properly - having ridden hundreds of thousands of miles on 1st Gens of the past (including Tweeks) by short shifting due to 2nd gear on those bikes gone where ever 1st Gen 2nd gears go on a lifelong vacation - this sales point by Larry made my heart pound like a Bow Hunters heart beats when a massive buck is standing under his tree stand (I always called it the "pump"). This will be a FIRST for me!! Another point of interest that we varified while gazing DenDen's notes today was a Barnett Clutch (:scared:never ever did have a good clutch either - WOWZY is that nice!!)/Progressive Springs and a Progressive Rear Shock (THANK YOU RAGGY FOR HELPING FIND THAT NAME ON THE SHOCK TODAY!!). While gazing under the bike looking at the shock - I also happen to notice ZERKS!!!!! GREASE ZERKS ON ALL THE SHOCK MOUNT BUSHINGS - WOWZY!!!!! Also under there some where I believe (correct me if I am wrong on this Larry) is gusseting of the problematic frame!! Larry also pointed out the rewire of the fuse block that has been done (thinking that may actually be some of Larry's work? Either way - JUST BEAUTIFUL).. During the process of discovering all this stuff I pointed out to Raggy today that I was literally shaking with excitement.. I could write a book about the happenings of the day (a few of you know that I really am capable of producing such a boring thing) but, in the name of consideration and out of respect for you the reader I will cut this introduction to our new bike short and end by saying this,,,, after getting separated from Tippy on the way home I managed to spend some bonding time with our new sweetheart.. I can attest that, even with a set of dirty plugs misfiring on 2 and 4 (I managed to weasel a ride in Larry and Joyces new Sling Shot to chase down new plugs for 1 and 3 - some people will do ANYTHING for a ride in a 200 horse big kids motorcycle/go cart/dune buggy - sorry folks,, getting caught venturing out into that book thing) and in an effort to burn off any remaining fuel stabilizer left in the new scoots tank I discovered on the way home from Detroit that this princess has the heart of a Queen!! Some middle aged guy on a V-65 Saber decided he was simply going to demenish any chance at Queenship our new bike had.. Anyone who has ever ridden one of these MK1's knows first hand how difficult this scenario is on the heart of bike with Royality in her blood... With Tippy safely in the confines of our cage behind me back in Detroit and doing as I had done so many times before with MK1's of years past,, I leaned forward and whispered into her yet to grow horn's fairing ""its ok sweetheart,,,,, let er buck".. I few seconds later I tipped my head down under my arm as I used to do when playing on the flat track at our local Motorcycle Club grounds for a quick glance at the competition and was pleasantly surprised to see the front wheel of our first challengers bike slowly disappearing from the scope of my view,, glanced up at my now WORKING speedo (oh yea,, forgot to mention - speedo AND gas gauge both work on my new one!!!) and noticed it had creeped well above a buck twenty.. It suddenly occurred to me that Tip had the paperwork on "Larry's bike" (tongue and cheek Larry - that's what popped into my mind when I realized what I was doing WITHOUT proper paperwork - "wasn't me officer" ) .. And so it all begins,,,,,,, again..... Speaking of being a law abiding citizen,,,, here are a few quick pics of what a new baby looks like at this time.. Discussion is already taking place in the Puc home about just where the future leads for all the "bling" on this lady.. Raggy scowled his normal smirky smirk when I mentioned how much better this one would "feel" once I got all our "stuff" on it.. I have blonde side covers on Tweeks that have well over a million miles on em (have been on all five of the 1st Gens we have worn out) and LOTS of memory stickers.. I mentioned how I personally would really like to just transfer all Tweeks glass and stickers over to this one to Raggy.. Raggy smirked and mentioned just starting over - problem is I cant... The people we have met and were thoughtful enough to sign Tweeks, the memories wrapped up in her gorgeous sticker covered body... This will be a tough one cause this new sure is purdy... One really cool thing about it all,, no matter what I end up doing in that regard,,, it appears at this time that my short shifting, clutch slipping days are slowly coming to an end - who'ld a thunk it..
  8. Also the cover is captured by alignment dowels and gasketed so it may take a couple light smacks with a rubber mallet to break it loose. It sometimes also helps to pull outwardly on the cover and then tap lightly on the shift shaft to keep the cover working outwardly. Watch your cover screw removal - they are different lengths and one of them on the bottom has a copper washer - put em back in right places. When you pull the cover you will probably find the starter idler gear laying in the bottom of the cover,, dont be alarmed - it just slides back into the case and and is in perfect alignment with the doweled cover.

I did get off the fence but felt the need to move my "maybe" over to a "no" because of health related stuff - things are just still to up in the air around here to commit at this time.. Depending on how I am feeling at the time, Tip and I may still jump on the scoot and ride over Saturday afternoon and say howdy - only time will tell on that though.. I take it you are planning on being there ?? A good friend of ours and his wife (@Bluestar99 and Vicky) are planning on representing our neighborhood.. He (Bluestar) is a really great guy but if you bump into him and he mentions anything about our hood - take anything he says about me almost crashing Crud (V-Max I had for a while) with a grain of salt - it really wasnt even a close call.. As far as Yamagrl goes,, no idea but I do agree with Bongo - you varmints at MD could sure use her technical skills and knowledge - getting to be more and more 2nd Gen riders who have somehow gotten the idea that 2nd Gen Ventures are as fast as 1st Gen's and I got a hunch that Yamagrl would,,,, never mind,,, if your going and she happens to be there you will figure it out.. Ride safe Bob and HAVE A BALL!!!!

Not trying to start anything but would hate to see you lose a motor due to oil pressure drop...

  19. WOW ZZZZZZ WOW WOW WOW JEFF - THAT COULD OF TURNED OUT REALLY REALLY BAD MY FRIEND!!! Thank you for keeping it all together to get er stopped - YOU DA MAN BROTHER!!:clap2: Regardless of how it happened - having a front end lock up like that can result in an instant crash. I had an old Honda 90 with the steer lock on the neck.. Got to wondering one day while riding whether I was quick enough to lock/unlock the steering while in motion:missingtooth:.. To my recollect, the face plant happened as soon as the lock went click:255:... Many years later I also lost a really good friend when his coffee mug fell from his cupholder - have used styro cups since that day... You done good brother and, for sure,, the good Lord was watching over your shoulder on that one!!!
  20. Yep,, bolt right in.. The MK2's (91) had the diaphram spring clutch in em so the clutch cover is a little deeper but not to the point of interfering with anything.. TCI and carbs are different so you will want those from the donor bike. If I were going to do what you are talking about I would double check the frame on the 83 for proper gusseting - a really good buddy of mine had his fail ( @Venturous_Randy ) and others have too.. As far as modding goes - this is the only real essential modding necessary.. If you wanted to do some other modding you could do some modding to the front of the 83 - drop on a set of MK2 forks then add on some R1 calipers so the finished 83 would stop as well as it runs.. As far as being worth it,,,,, most of us 1st Gen riders around here sure seem to think so!! Mom Yam is the one who stopped building em,,, not us!!!   23. Couple of things,,, a quick check on Ebay for a motor shows the prices pretty wide spread BUT - most of those motors are motor only.. My guess is that a "Buy It Now" for 600 bucks plus shipping with the "make an offer" option engaged will end up with multiple offers in the 3 to 4 hundred range... Getting over that $500 mark may be a toughy but ya never know till ya try!! I totally agree with Bongo on his comment but keep in mind,, it seems like that is a two way street these days.. Bidders not fulfilling their "bid contract" seems to be a common factor too these days.. Being under no time constraints, I would figure out what I needed for it and stick it on our site and maybe in Craigs first GnV... Sure seems like anyone looking to replace their motor would be drawn to yours in particular seeing that its not even broke in yet
