Tip and I sat here and watched this thru several times Raggy = AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:clap2::dancefool::thumbsup::thumbsup::thumbsup: Some of those lop eared varmints I recognized and was able to point em out to Tip (tell Bongo his secret agent under cover sunglasses :bluesbrother:disguise didnt work very well ) and some I was unable to do so.. EXCELLENT video production though brother - certainly made our day - THANK YOU!!! :lightbulb:Now that we know you know how to make that video apparatus function and know how to post clips,,, how about a clip of you running around Don's yard getting a picture of everyone and having them state their screen names:big-grin-emoticon:,,,, ,,, "Unspoken VR Forum Rule #12854 .3 = never let the know the full extent of your :photographing:taking abilities"

A Bucket List Trip. Or how I will spend my summer.....
cowpuc replied to The Tooch's topic in Watering Hole
@The Tooch - Still following this AWESOME ride of yours brother!!!:clap2::dancefool::thumbsup: It hit close to 90 here in Michigan today and we just had a major cool down come thru from your homeland.. Could not help but think of the major temp changes you 4 are experiencing on your EMA (Epic Motorcycle Adventure) - Colorado snowball fights, the dry HEAT of Death Valley/Vegas and now your up in the mists of Oregon .. Kind of mind boggling how things can change so much aint it?? How did the bikes do in the heat? How bout tires? Any of you guys needing a tire swap yet? It would be interesting to know what brand of rear tire each of you are running and how they compare.. You guys take care out there brother - have fun and be safe!! TELL YOUR BUDDY OL PUC SAYS THANKS FOR THE BLOG AND THE PICS - JUST BEAUTIFUL!! -
Unless you have a zillion miles on her or have added a bunch of lights,, I would be more suspicious of the Voltage Reg than the stator.. Here is good write up on testing.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?81297-Testing-for-a-Battery-not-Charging And here is another good read on the subject.. http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?78728-Do-I-need-a-new-stator&highlight=changing+stator Stator replacement aint bad and neither is the regulator.. Stator is inside the left engine cover and, on the 2nd Gens, I think the regulator is under the bottom of the radiator...

But I still feel like I am headed there mentally and in spirit.. Speaking of being there mentally I cant help but wonder a few things.. I wonder if Frosty will bail out of the back of Fool's truck knowing he is headed into the Oberlin heat,,, I wonder if Don will have enough Fried Chicken - hope he ordered extra cause I have seen the likes of MarCarl, YammerDan, Buckshot, Skidder, DragonSlayer, Raggy, Carbon One, ET(Joe), Drews, and Bongo chow down,, I wonder if Bluestar99 got his new front tire on and if he and his wife found enough Diesel fuel on the way to Don's so the motor in his pusher Motor Home does the pushing so they didnt have to,, I wonder if that funny looking Red Flag will be flying again on the awning where the guys will be working on scoots even though Big Tom may not be there to hang it, I wonder if Don's new bike will be faster than his last one so he doesnt slow the drag race down that will be heading to the Lube Oil and Filter place this year, I wonder if Rickardracing will find his motel room up to par - maybe even have an extra towel to wipe off his seat in the morning, I wonder if Dan will remember he is driving an under powered Ford Ranger when he try's to make a quick pass on the highway, I wonder if anyone of those lop eared varmints remembered to bring a camera and will take some pictures to prove MD really did happen......

Like my Economics Prof used to say all the time "all things being equal" = No as long as you stay above a couple grand on the R's the charging system one would think the charging system could keep up with normal operations with a weak battery once its running BUT - when you shift and your R's quickly drop off - if you have a bad battery your engine will be deprived of the 12 volts its needs and will stammer.. Also,, its not uncommon for a battery to short out internally and gobble electrons like a 10 year old eatin french fries (this is the "unequal" part of the equation).. 9 years on a battery is AWESOME - time for a new one any way so you didnt go wrong on picking one up but still go down and grab a cheapy VOM (ohm meter) and take a peek at your charging system.. Nothing wrong with knowing all is well there..
-
Sure sounds suspiciously like a charging system issue to me too Jeff - these guru's are batting 100% this morning.. Shoot down to Harbor Freight, pick up a cheapy Ohm Meter for a few bucks, set it on 20v DC, turn it on and put the leads on the battery posts,, you should see around 12v without the bike running - start your scoot and rev it a little and see if the voltage reading jumps up above 13.5.. If no movement up ya got a charging problem.. Another easy way to check it is to just glance at your headlight when you rev it (kind of old school but still effective) - should see the headlight brighten slightly as the R's come off idle.. Have never owned one of the newer Ventures but stator issues on the MK1 1st Gens were really common and a toasted stator would cause exactly what your talking about but stator failure is more uncommon on bikes like yours.. I have read on the site here where the RSV's like yours have had issues with the Voltage Regulator,, if it were my bike and it didnt show charging on the ohm meter I would take a peek at the connectors leading into the Voltage Reg - making sure they were clean and healthy...

pic of carb cables
cowpuc replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
A few pictures that may help: Here is a picture of the "pull" cable: and it goes in this "cup" - this is also the cable that you need to make sure goes behind the nylon "washer" on the linkage shaft: This is the return cable: and the return cable goes into this cup: and this is what your friends carbs should look like - notice 2 cable cups: -

The cable with the adjuster on it is the "pull to open" cable and it goes into the cable cup that is furthest to the left side (left as in left side if sitting on the bike) cable cup. This is the cable that Marcarl is talking about that routes behind (or to the right) of the linkage with the nylon washer on it. The other cable will probably have 2 cable barrels on it - one on the end and one between the end of the cable itself and the cable covering - this cable is the return cable and it goes into the receiving cup furthest to the right (or closest to the center line between the two front carbs. I have always found it easiest to thread and hook up the cables to the carb linkages while the carb bank is outside of the frame spar to the left side because you can turn the carbs over and work from beneath. After hooking up the cables to the carb linkage - leave the cables out of their holding cups and the adjuster on the pull cable to full slack until you get the carbs back in the bike. After the carbs are in place you can place the cables into their holding cups and readjust the cable for the correct amount of throttle play.. -
Hope you get feeling better brother - Prayers Up and Blessing Down!!

Well dont that just make your coon hound howl,, we do the same thing here in the North DanL'!! I did a "how to survive in the wilderness" speech in a School Speech Class years ago.. Brought in a couple Blue Jays (smaller but still have feathers like most Chickens) I had shot with pellet gun, a can of sterno heat (teacher was skeptical about me building a small campfire in the classroom), two empty coffee cans, a can of Crisco and some news papers in case things got messy.. Probably like you, I prefer plucked chicken so the skin is left on (gives the cracker crum batter something to stick to) but when I demonstrated the cleaning of the Blue Jays I just pulled the skin - feathers and all - off em, removed the breast meat from the bone and removed the legs and dropped the meat into the can with the Crisco heated to the point it would make my spit crackle..

Ride safe out there brother,, eat a piece of Oberlin Chicken for me down there!!

Raggy is headed to MD and I happen to know he carries spare tie wraps in his trunk Bossman,,, prettiest black tie wraps ya ever did see too:thumbsup:

Picturing you sitting there in the outback all by yourself with your feet propped up on the pipes of your scoot with your Swag (Quickstep taught me about those - never did see one but sure sounded like my kind of deal) all set for some catching some shut eye after cooking a Hot Dog makes me feel like you might need a bedtime story Spear.. How bout it??? True story about a time when I met some of your countrymen from down under here in the States... A number of years ago my cousin and I strapped the tents on our scoots and headed out for the big Harley Rally in Sturgis South Dakota. It's a wild place, not as quiet as your outback but just as wild and dangerous I assure you.. We had been playing in the Black Hills all day, pulled into Rapid City (another wild town not to far from the Rally).. We were beat tired, was about 1 a.m.,, my cousin had never "toured" on a bike before so he was dependent on my expertise for picking out a camping spot.. I showed him how to check the skyline for the blinking lights of the towns water tower (water towers make great camp ground areas) which we did and soon were "Swagging" under the Rapid City water tower.. About 2 hours later the sky's opened up with a torrential down pour that was doubled in strength by the shape of the water tower.. The dome of the tower managed to gather and release enough water under it to form an instant mountain stream that actually had enough strength that I could feel my tent starting to float.. I rolled up in my sleeping bag tightly to protect myself in case the flood washed me down the mountain and to lessen the amount of screaming noises coming from my cousins tent and went back to sleep.. The next morning I awoke to a sensation that I had been sleeping in a soaking wet Hot Dog bun all night and my cousin did too - thankfully it was a very warm morning.. We rolled up our gear the best that we could and headed into town to see if we could find some dry clothes at a Good Will store to change into and maybe some grub.. After coming out of the store we found a gentleman staring at our wadded up camping gear on the backs of our bikes.. When we approached the bikes the man looked at us, smiled and said "rough nite eay"? I smiled back and said - "not really,, we needed showers anyway:rasberry:".. The guy laughed and started to tell us about some people from Australia who were camped in a campground not to far from where we had camped under the Water Tower and they had a couple kids who they had to rescue from the tent outside their 5th Wheel during the night from the same storm.. He said the folks from down under had came to the states, purchased a used rig and were touring the U.S. for a year.. I looked at my cousin, smiled and told him I would LOVE to go meet some Australians (I love meeting folks from far away places and hearing their stories).. The guy who was still staring at our mess looked at us and said "you should go over and meet them,, I have been camping next to them for a few nights now and they are really nice people". I asked if they seemed like they could take a joke? He laughed and said OH YEA - they are pranksters not to dissimilar from you two - I asked him what the guy from down unders first name was and what lot they were parked in at the campground... After stopped and changed into our dry shorts behind some bushes I told my cousin I had an idea about introducing ourselves to the Aussies.. He glared at me and asked what I was up to.. As I pushed the start button on my Venture and told him to just follow my lead and away I went.. We pulled into the campground, found the lot the guy had told us about and found what looked like the 5th Wheel the guy back at the store had described.. A middle age man stepped out of the door of the trailer and glanced over at our bikes parked in the lot beside him, I looked up and said "Steve,, is that you? I cant believe it - what are you doing in the States?" (Steve being the name the guy back at the store had given us).. Of course, "Steve" from down under stared at me with total wonderment in his eyes,, carefully walked over to my bike all while staring at me.. I said, Steve,, its Scott,,, you remember,,, you and your wife met me in Sydney at the airport where I was having problems with my rental car and you helped me out and then later had me over for dinner ,,,, you got the wife and kids with ya??:crackup::crackup::cool10::cool10: Thought my Aussie friend was gonna loose it or something so I came clean and told him the whole story.. To this day I have NEVER seen anybody laugh so hard in my life!! :rotfl: Come to find out, "Steve" and his family really were touring the U.S. for a whole year before reselling the rig and heading home to Australia. He said that they had purposely came to South Dakota during the Rally to "see the crazy bikers" and that what we had done TOTALLY made their trip:happy34:!!!

and I was gonna guess a "Domed" VR Sticker!!!

Right there with ya brother,, it is sooooooooooooooo hard to go there.. Like you, fighting all the health issues I have in the last couple years its now almost a daily discussion around here to just keep the new scoot for local Hot Dog parties and pick up a Jeep CJ for cross country play when the Doctors stop taking all our extra cash.. Something Tip could drive if she had to.. Get this,,, we have even talked about picking up a small trailer to pull behind it.. My problem is that biking is in my very soul,,, giving up dirt riding was hard enough - breaks my heart to even think about now tossing in the towel on touring on a scoot too..
-
Get a bad gasket at one of the joints in the exhaust system so air can be drawn in and ya can end up with more booms and backfires than a good electrical storm,,, especially on a hard decell... Take a good look for leaks Teej..

WOW ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ WOW WOW WOW:scared:,,, and a looker she is my friend:thumbsup:!!!!!! SHE IS GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:clap2::clap2::clap2: ,, always amazed me how the original designer of that model was able to incorporate a 4 wheel drive 1 hp infinitely geared drivetrain together with power steering, excellent ground clearance, full independent suspention front and rear, built in automatic fly swatter, unbelievable power assisted anti lock braking and a TCI that has an intelligence level that surpasses some humans. Good find Jammer - she is a DANDY!! Hope you and Cricket have many many hours of great trail time together brother!!

IMHO, change it,,, that 1/2 plate is already the weak link (again, IMHO) - no sense in messing up a clutch swap over one plate.. Personally I have always been suspicous that the 1/2 plate "buffer" idea was a good idea from the dynamics of making the clutch more user friendly (less grabbing, smoother engagement) but possible causation of a lot of our clutch slipping under power - especially in those upper gears where we are asking the most out of the clutch.. Aint no way, aint no how I would rebuild it without replacing that little slacker..
-
,,,, still not exactly sure how pulling the clutch in will devibe a motor at idle thats vibration is occurring from being out of sync:scratchchin:,, maybe out of free spinning harmonics or something,,,, regardless of my mindless thinking here I would follow the gurus and definitely check the sync first!!... Almost sounds more like a bearing has lost its cage and those little steal balls are gathering together in the races or something.. One of my 1st Gens got so sloppy in the clutch support system that if you leaned it to one side it would rattle and vibrate like crazy at an idle until you pulled in the clutch but it had well over 200k on it.. Another thing you could do is check under your scoot and see if you picked up a rock or bent something so the engine is making frame contact somehow.. Its not totally impossible for a stone to be lodged between a hydraulic line and the frame and to create some changing sounds and feelings when ya squeeze the clutch (actually had that happen to me).. Dont know why but my gut tells me I would also be checking motor mounts, pipe mounts and maybe even mounting screws for the clutch slave for tightness.. Another thing you could do is think back to when this first started.. Maybe you have a flat washer out of place on a rubber mount somewhere or something....

Good on ya Digger!!! Remove the bags, remove the seat, pull the sending unit from top of fuel tank, look inside tank with flashlight and mirror for rust stalagtites - dont be fooled into thinking a filter can keep rust out of carbs (wont work - carbs will go south at worst time possible if you trust a filter to remove rust) - either coat tank with Red Kote or find different tank if tank is rusty. Check tank before sending fuel thru pump and into freshly cleaned carbs. All the very best in making it go!! Puc

Thinking the early RSTD's are the Yam V-4's with the unbalanced motor in em Bows.. Those were 96 to 01 scoots I believe... I would be asking the same questions if I were thinking about raising the revs on one of those too if thats what your talking about...
