,,, lucky they didnt name you Eweee or Peeuuuy or,,, :lightbulb:BIRDPUC ... Many years and 5 1st Gen Ventures ago, my 2nd born daughter and I were crossing the country on our 1st MK1 - a gorgeous Blonde Royale that the kids named "Beej".. After several days of chasing the front wheel, we had popped the tent up - while laying in the tent staring at the western star covered sky my little girl asked about the strange biker names she had heard while we were playing around at the Sturgis Rally:doh:.. I explained to her how important nick-names were to bikers,, did so eloquently so I didnt have to explain the true meaning behind some she inquired about .. My little girl leaned up on her elbow and declared that her and I BOTH needed biker names cause we were bikers too:bighug:.. I agreed and told her we would ponder it during our trip and that biker names were things that had to be earned and were something "given" not something you do for yourself - thats what makes em special.. My daughters hair was VERY fine (small in diameter) and almost white blonde at that early age.. Her hair would rat up in the wind really bad and I finally figured out by putting my riding cap on her head backwards and adjusting it to the smallest setting it would stay on her head and had plenty of room inside to stuff her hair in.. She earned the name "Cappy" out of all that.. One of things I always had a problem with throughout my life of biking/tenting was the uncanny ability to find Cow manure to step in when setting up the tent.. My daughter noticed that during this 1st adventure and commented on it.. One of the things my wife and I always maintained when raising our children was their language,, we allowed no swearing and were even careful about "slang" words with the kids - I know,, old school way of life but thats how we chose to raise em.. I remember vividly my little girl looking at me with a confused look on her face as she wanted to say something about me stepping in the Manure for the umpteenth time and struggling with exactly what verbage to use ,,, all of a sudden she blurts out - Daddy, you always seem to step in Cow Pucky = that particular batch of Cow Puc must of been really sticky cause it has been with me ever since...

I had a bad battery one time that I honestly believe it developed an open between the cell connectors that only went open when heated up a little under a load.. Crazy thing would read fine and perform well under a short load test.. Chased that monkey for a week before I finally came to the conclusion I did and I only found it by accident.. I must of hooked my meter up to that stupid thing a hundred times cause it was doing similar stuff to what you are talking XV.. 12.5 fully charged - hit the starter button - 10.5 on the load - release the starter - 12.5.. Looked great.. I finally discovered that leaving the load on it for a long period of time (20 or 30 seconds actually ) to really stress the battery and all of a sudden I lost a cell!!

YOU got an Icelandic parts bike sitting there and YOU are gonna waste the 4th of July riding cause your scoot is down :big-grin-emoticon::big-grin-emoticon::big-grin-emoticon::big-grin-emoticon: Arent the R/R's on the 2nd Gens mounted up front under the rads? Pretty easy to get at? Might be worth removing a couple bolts, popping the terminals off and plugging the Vikings reg in just to see what ya get... I may be wrong but I dont think a Stator can over produce and fry a reg (like can happen to a TCI) so you really arent in danger of hurting anything if it is the Stator (PLEASE correct me if I am wrong here you guys).. Maybe back feeding from the battery if the stator is gone to ground? Dont seem like that would be possible cause we are talking diodes only allowing current flow one way.... Actually you guys,,, didnt I read somewhere that the stator wires (all 3 of them) terminate at the R/R.. If so, a simple ohm check across the legs of the 3 phase wires should show you if your stator is ok .. Seems like 3.5k ohms or there abouts across the legs (or, even more important is that they all read close to the same across each other) and each leg tests open to ground were good numbers on the 1st Gens.. 2nd Gens cant be that much different - they still gotta have a 3 phase stator in em dont they? Quick check your stator, if its good - beg/borrow or that Vikings - go riding - replace your reg when Bob sends it over - replace the Vikings and buy that Norseman a steak dinner when he comes State side - dont tell him why your buying him a dinner, just tell him ya love him and he has a really nice bike:missingtooth:

Class system
cowpuc replied to Old Man Zzzz's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OUTSTANDING on the first ride!!!!!! The MK1's came with ink pen springs in the Forks from Mom Yam.. The real fix is going with Progressives. Here is a really good write up about the process: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?505-Progressive-Spring-Install Once you get your CLASS system figured out, dumping air in the front will help but its still not the best answer.. A set of Progressives, 3/4 inch of preload, 12.5 weight Bell Ray and you'll be skipping over those whoops like a kid on a YZ125 - with no air needed! -
Sorry bro,, I got a bad habit of calling anyone south of my home a Southerner, East of my home an Eastener, West of my home a westerner and North of my home frostbit.. It's a lot easier on my pea brain if I do it this way...

Got a couple of lop eared VR varmints from Cheeseland (Wisconsin) coming over to pick up a scoot tomorrow Ady - you would be more than welcome to ride over to the west side and meet up with us at the house here if you would like.. I know both the varmints who are coming, really great folks, are the type who love putting faces with names and I do too!! They are coming in a truck so we wont be doing any riding but your still welcome to stop in and say howdy... If you need to get an idea of where I am located you can click on the members map, find the Cowpuc balloon on the shoreline - about half way up... Those two varmints should be here around 2ish...

Choke will not increase RPMs
cowpuc replied to pinetum's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If it were mine I would start out by spit check the headers to make sure it's running on 4.. What your describing could be related to having a fouled plug. These scoots have the smaller plugs in em which dont take kindly to being blackened from a little over chocking and its amazing how well they will run on 3 cylinders - except for little things like you are describing.. Would type more suggestions but I gotta run to the Doctor,, will check back later and see how ya come out.. -
:sign Rock On: Breaks my heart to no end and really lights my fire when I see em burning our precious Old Glory ON OUR SOIL with no - DISGUSTING!!! Crazy crazy crazy world out there I tell ya!! Hope Trump stays true to his word, dont get assassinated and is able to clean this place up!! Sorry for the Riv!!!

Ol Murph is at it again:bawling:!! Never had no 2nd gen but from what I have read - those 2nd Gen Regulators seem to know when to go on vacation (seems more likely than a stator as new as it is).. Maybe recharge the battery, crank er up and do a voltage output test at the battery - see if she runs up over 13.5 volts as you rev er a little.. If not, pull the terminals on the regulator - clean em up,, check/clean other connections at the battery, make sure grounds are clean and give it another test.. From what I have read - the three stator wires terminate at the regulator - you should be able to ohm out the stator there, or start it and see what kinda voltage your getting off the stator,,, still got a gut feeling its regulator related,,, unless you have been running some massive added amp load or something.. Wish I had some 2nd Gen parts Craig,, I would overnight them to you so you could ride - I KNOW HOW YA FEEL BROTHER!!

:hihi::hihi::hihi::hihi: ,, I'd be careful talking smack on the Fozzy DanL'... I seen that lop eared varmint boogy once - trying to catch another one of you southner's and can tell ya, that Bear can scoot:scared:!!!! ,,, probably should not have written that little note inside the sending unit package,,,, he sees that and gets any where near Michigan on any of his travels,,,, hope I got my running shoes on at the time!! Speaking of the package @DragonRider ,,, should be there Tuesday,, USPS tracking number is 9500 1121 2687 6183 0024 91 ,,, wowzy thats a bunch of numbers Hope it works PERFECT and that 87 leads you folks up to Michigan sometime for a Hot Dog outing!!! PS - THANK YOU SOOOOOOO MUCH FOR ALL YOU DO FOR THOSE ST. JUDES LITTLE ONE'S - YOU DA BEAR,,, I MEAN - YOU DA MAN!!:clap2::clap2:

No Foz,, Cimmer is correct and I screwed up - the smaller of the two - the one with the single pin connector (one on the left that you have circled in the picture) IS the temp sending unit. The blade terminal one that I had taken a pic of is a single blade fan switch for an 83 - the one on the right in your pic that has two blade terminals is your fan switch. This makes sense because if you check a parts fiche for the two bikes it does show different part numbers for the Fan Switch (different Prefix before the part number) and I bet cha yours having two blade connectors and mine only having one is the reason why.. THE TEMP SENDING UNIT IS THE SAME NUMBER SO THE UNIT I HAVE IN MY HAND SHOULD WORK FINE - SEE PIC. PM me your address Lewis and I will stick it in the mail for you..

sand bagging,,,,, waiting for ol Pucster to get hammered by Fozzie Bear is more like it:big-grin-emoticon:
-
Dahhhh,, believe you are correct Cim = my bad,, thinking I pulled the wrong one out of the loose manifold they screw into ... Last time I had issues with the gauge on an 83 it was a loose connection at the terminal like you said AND as I remember - it too was the pin connector, not the spade:doh: Thank you for jumping in here and correcting me before Lewis saw this and harrassed me endlessly for my dorkiness

Numorous questions on 1st gen
cowpuc replied to Rags06moto's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Once again - LOTS of great advice happening here,,, gotta join in the fun! Hey Rags,, your sticking brake issue sounds really familiar - especially since you were able to release pressure off the bleeder and didnt have to smack the side of the caliper to get the pistons to return (had that been the case, I would be guessing corroded caliper pistons) - had that similar brake sticking happen to me once on a cross country tour and found a plugged return bleed off causing the issues - take a quick read here: http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?12536-Stranded-with-brakes-sticking-and-heating-up-Read-this -
This look like what your after @DragonRider? This is the temp sender for an 83... PM me an address if it is and I will stick her in the mail brother!
