  2. AWESOME KEV AND to both of you!! GREAT scoots IMHO!! Rootin for ya to catch that bug Lori!
  3. Like already mentioned earlier,, carbs are a monster.. Honda did a bang up job taking care of the stator replacement dilemma of having to pull the engine for that BUT they also moved away from one carb per jug where you could get at em to a carb system buried between the frame spars - similar to our V-4's only way tighter and harder to work on.. One of the little issues sometimes overlooked when test riding that becomes a major with the 1500's has to do with the "accelerator pump" on the carb system - ride it, make sure its warmed up to operating temp and then "feel" for a hesitation while giving it throttle thru the gears. If you do feel hesitation beware that the carb has gotta come out and, as mentioned, not a fun job. Also,, and one of you guru's PLEASE correct me if I am wrong, I am thinking those were still interference timing belt motors.. Easy to replace but ya wanna make sure you do so if there is no record of it as it would be a shame to loose a motor over a snapped belt.. One of the things that I really liked about em was the reverse drive lever set up.. It wasn't to long ago that a VR friend put @Eck and I in touch with a friend of hers who was having problems with his 1800 wing trike.. Found out that he accidently had pushed the button for reverse when it was in gear and locked up his scoot. Cant remember exactly what the final outcome was (Eck will probably remember) but I do know that I have since looked at that set up on a 1800 and could see how - if a person got distracted when going into reverse - easy it would be to make that mistake.. Being more of a "keep it simple" type of guy and letting grand kids climb on my scoots like I do - I think I would prefer the lever.. Concerning the trike itself.. Been lots of debate around here between straight axle and independent suspention.. I have yet to ride an independent but have put some time in on straight axles (built one for a neighbor, have a neighbor with a HD Free Wheeler and have ridden a number of Demo Tri-Glides.. IMHO - the straight axles can have a tendency to jump around a little on rough road surfaces - especially pot holes in corners. Been told (and makes sense) the independants have more of a stay planted feeling. Saw an ad not long ago for a Hannigan (think it was) independent that came off a wing - the ad had pictures of the rear end they were selling.. Looking at how it was built (AMAZING OUTFIT) I could see why I have had many folks tell me that my staying planted theory was spot on - quite an outfit.. Anyway,, might want to check under the machine and see what make of trike kit it is - thinking the Independant would be worth more (I highly suspect you would find that out to if you price a new Hannigan outfit)... Thats all I know, my brain is empty - hope it helps in some small way Lawman,,, did I say Lawman,,, I meant Turtle !! Puc
  4. PERFECT BOSS!! Thank you for doing this to honor those who deserve it so much!! Wonder if this thread should be "pinned" for a while?
  5. PS - LOVE THE PIC!!! I would have to duc tape it on my finger though cause I would probably miss it sitting way down there on the jack You da man Vaz!
  6. Right there with my buddy Bongo - raise her up - get full extention on the tubes and check em closely for pitting!! Never owned or worked one Vaz so I dont get around in the 2nd Gen tech area much or,, maybe a more appropriate excuse = I gotta get out more = sorry I missed this earlier my friend.. Yep,, sure sounds like the ol leaky fork seal routine to me brother.. Like I said - never worked on a second gen so,,, pay no attention to the guy behind the curtain if this sounds wayyyyyyyy out there BUT = 1. If your scoot is manual fill on the fork air you might try pressing the shrader on the fork air and seeing if its built up pressure from those extreme Arizona temps. 2. Before you rip the forks apart you might try just taking a piece of 35 mm film and slipping it between the seal and the tube and then sliding it upward at an angle in an attempt to clean trapped dirt out from the seal edges.. I know they make a cheap little tool for this nowadays (bet you could find one at a MX Bike shop in your area) but I always used the old school, back yard 35mm film method and it works pretty dog gone good. 3. No idea if the 2nd Gens have rebound valving on the top of fork tube or if they have inverted forks under those guards - if they are standard forks like on our 1st Gens and ya gotta split em down to put in new seals,, it can probably all be done with the tubes left in the clamps (IMHO = makes it easier cause it sorta works like having the tubes in a vice if you know what I mean. 4. If you do have to split em - not a bad idea to drop in new bushings. 5. dont forget to double check your front brake pads for fork fluid contamination - if contaminated they are shot.. that a coyote came along when you were parked up there in those gorgeous AZ mountains and thought the front wheel of your scoot was a fire hydrant and your front forks are fine!!
  7. NICE!!!!!!!!!
  8. :scared:WOW ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ WOW ZZZZZZZZZZZZZ WOW WOW WOW RAGGY = AWESOME:dancefool::dancefool:!!! A real deal TRUE step back in time!! Heyyyyyy,, wait a minute here,, didnt you have a beard not to long ago and not just a ? You trade your beard for the outfit or you trying to run incogneato for a coming up border crossing while headed for that NY rally coming up GREAT FIND BROTHER!!
  9. Seems how Riv is the type of lop eared varmint who dont mind a friendly between varmints (my kinda guy there Riv) = couple more thoughts.. Kind of wonder if good ol "what about BOB (battle of the bulge)" wouldn't show up on the display screen as an intermittent low oil pressure icon (that little oil can flickering at idle).. Also,, anyone ever take the time to plumb up an actual oil pressure gauge on one of these sweethearts? Seems like that would also give a clue if one of our scoots were hemoraging internally.. Fool - LOVE your thoughts brother = good stuff = know what I mean Vern:sign kewl:.. Thanks Riv for letting us
  10. Never even knew they existed till a couple years ago while playing around at one of @OrlinEngh 's camp ride parties.. Not sure if it was his Colortune but Shrek n I played with one on Shrek's scoot.. Wayyyyy cool outfit!! Like mentioned - its best to use in a darker corner of garage so you can see the burn better and a little tricky to get your head just right to see the window down in the plug channel (little mirror would work great) but indeed - definitely a neat little tool for tuning!! Sort of an inexpensive way to do the work of a sniffer if ya know what I mean = get that pretty little blue flame happening, sync em down and let er rip!!
  11. Lots of things going on in the back end of a scoot.. Could be dryness on the swingarm bushings, shock linkage, loose shock, rear brake caliper related, dry pins in the drive, shock wore out, bearing related or - even a stick/weeds stuck in there somewhere from doing a little two trackin .. I am with Black Wing = give er a good shake down and see what ya find.. I had a sticky brake on the back of Tweeksis, put her up on the center stand - cleaned the rear brake pistons = seems much better so far but - while I was cleaning em I put a little side pressure on her back end and heard a "swooshing" sound that sounded like a horse shooing away flies with its tail .. Investigation into the new noise showed that the red - white n blue party beads she has hanging on her rear rack were moving and rubbing on her rear rack ... You havent added any new bling on your scoot that may be causing a new noise have you Speed?
  12. Excellent info Jeff:thumbsup:!! I can just hear the wrenches spinning in the garages of 1st Gen owners all across the world - let the oil pan pulling begin brothers and sisters
  13. AWESOME x10000000 Riv = LOOKS GREAT and sounds like your on it like a hound chasing a lop eared rabbit varmint:Bunny: !!! Right there with ya 100% on a good honing and some new rings - nothing like a refresh! Ya know,, I too remember hearing about that bulging o-ring business years ago,, for some reason I thought it was more common in the early v-max's and due to the higher R's creating more oil pressure.. Guess I should have paid more attention in class ... Good on ya for opening Maxine's motor up and finding all the good stuff you have found Riv = look's like AZZI and RIV are gonna be able to cut the ride time in half when they head for a Hot Dog in Michigan from Arizona next year
  14. Great idea Don - 100% with ya brother,, those having served or serving as LEO's, Firemen or EMT's deserve our recognition = A HUGE THANK'S TO EACH OF YOU:clap2::clap2:!! I really really like the tribute Icon that Doug put up but wonder how recognizable it will be when posted in the smaller form like you mentioned.. Wonder if having just the center circle for an Icon as it might be easier to view. Another thought, we could do badges or the center piece with the emblems for service in each branch and then use the one Doug posted or the Circular from its center if someone has served in each area (not that uncommon around here). I know,, as usual,, I am probably making it all way to complicated:big-grin-emoticon: GREAT THREAD IMHO!
  15. Yep,, totally forgot about the fact that the test stand (Maxine the donor scoot) is all gone - that earlier response was a drive by response if there ever was one - thanks for catching that Fool.. Back to the subject at hand here.. I am with Jeff on measuring piston height - even a quick check with a set of Verniers at TDC could tell alot. IMHO, a lot of info could also be had from examining the oil that was in Maxine's motor Riv. How much water is in it? After pulling the oil and letting it drain good - pulling the pan and shining a pin light on the internals to see if rust has started forming is a good idea too.. Ya know,, the more I think about all this the more I am inclined to go with the idea of just holding a memorial service for Maxine, be thankful you only have 100 bucks in it so far (I know Riv - I TOTALLY respect the thought that 100 bucks is a fair chunk of change to just toss by the wayside BUT - figuring that if you do pull it down - put new bearings and on and on into only to discover you got a cracked block or a bad bearing in the tranny from rust accumulation somewhere or whatever - you see where I am going I am sure) and focus the attention on AZZI. AZZI has the advantage of having a proven motor to massage. Cost wise, both in time and $$ - seems like that would be the most economical.. I implore you not to be to discouraged by your recent findings Riv - basically its all just part of the world of Hot Rodding or playing with this stuff.. Sometimes it works, sometimes it dont - bottom line = you can't win em all,, ,, BUT YOU CAN TRY:big-grin-emoticon::thumbsup:
  16. RATTSSSSSSS,,, sorry to see this Riv - like you I was for a little better image in there - I hate when that happens.. On the same token though - I have seen wayyyy worse.. I am gonna approach this from an experimental "working off a tight budget standpoint".. Run the piston's down to BDC, seal em off with a layer of cardboard with grease along the edges of the cardboard to protect the rings, beg - borrow or steal (ok,, dont steal - buy one if ya have to) a dingle berry hone and clean the jugs up, pull the inspection cover off the crank, spin it up off the crank with a drill motor while letting the cam chains roll thru your hands, check the ring surfaces for any apparent broken ring marks, stick the V-Max heads on it, put it back in the frame it came out of originally in total temporary test mode - start it up and see what it sounds, feels, smells and acts like - a total science experiment that may or may not work out..

  18. Looks kind of hit n miss on rebuild parts: http://www.cheapcycleparts.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042475f8700209bc787e27/crankshaft-piston Guess those many years of riding these good ol 1st Gens on Michigan Historic Plates has to have some hidden cost
  19. Throttle
  20. Thanks Or,, just walked out in the tent and didnt see it either... Wish you guys would have taken more of that junk,, I mean all those cool parts.. Would have made it a lot easier to look around!! Did notice those Kawasaki Voyager 2 parts still laying there - to bad we aint riding Kawi's,,, could make someone a great deal on some bag guards, left bag, floor board and brake pedal - free if they came and got em!!
  21. Pretty nice one in the Michigan Auto Trader - thinking it has a little more load capacity - thinking the guy is asking 7 for it - sometimes I think to much I think:big-grin-emoticon: No idea if he got any bites on it cause I aint he - just thought I would pass on the info..
  22. WOW ZZZZZZ WOW WOW WOW - found it Snyp!! Got some goodies on it that someone on here would probably appreciate - front bumper, chrome fender skirt, lit rotor covers - even has carbs and probably TCI and all that.. WHAT A DEAL!!! To bad its in Oregon (Eugene) You gonna try to chase it down? If not,, might not be a bad idea to link it up in our Craigs section:thumbsup: = someone is gonna go nuts and have a great deal!!
  23. Hi Mike!! Long time know have seen!! Still riding that pretty scoot you had down in Goonerville ( @Barrycuda always corrected me when I said that ),, I mean Guntersville? WOW that was/is gorgeous!! Nice to hear from you brother!! PS - hope I got the right person Yea,, dont cha just LOVE huntin on the Adhuntr!!! Now I gotta go see if I can find the free Venture is
  24. Ya know,, come to think of it,,, I also think I remember picking one up on the side of the road one time - wonder what happened to it - be right back, will go out into my 1st Gen parts pile and see if its laying out there... ,,,, @OrlinEngh and @Shrek were over not to long ago helping me clean up around here - wonder if either of those lop eared parts pickn varmints may have seen it out there - what say you Or? Shrek? Those guys are probably busy eating cheese (Wisconsinites do that a LOT) and crackers with there feet propped up by a camp fire - I will go dig around and see what I can find 40 - if I find it you can have it..
  25. ,,,, I got a pair of em 40.. Only problem is they came on my new scoot along with the Chrome rear bumper with lights and all that that - without the turn downs the exhaust shoots directly onto the bumper so I am thinking the guy who ends up with the bumper is probably gonna want the Tips too. All in VERY good shape.. Was just reading your post about some bad coils.. I also have a complete TCI/coil set up that I purchased years ago as a spare (this one has no plug wires and I have no idea whether its any good - it was suppose to be fully functional but it didnt come off one of my running parts bikes so not really sure on this one).. Thoughts?
