Although protecting your claw hammer from the risk of tweakin a claw by letting it bounce off the ground instead of catching it like you did may seem like an overkill to some,, I commend you for it brother!! After spending the summer months executing my PPFFFFYF (Puc's Plan For Fighting Future Five Year Floods) by hand digging over 300 feet of storm drainage here at home, Tip Troop and I headed west to enjoy some time with the kids/grandkids!! SOOOOO much fun!! After using up Troopers 10,000 miles between oil change that I had freshly installed upon departure for the great state of California and all points between here and there, the three of us stopped back at home for an overnighter to swap in Troops next 10000 mile oil change before heading out on our 40th Anniversary trip to Key West Florida in an effort to find Tippy some Palm Trees to camp under at Ocean side again (if you have never biked down and tent camped along Alligator Alley or under Palms in the Keys your life is missing something) and to see if I could break my 10 foot long Alligator siting in the Everglades on the sides of Alligator Alley established years ago (ok,, there was wayyy more to our trip to Florida - like good FOOD - but those two points were openly discussed BEFORE departure).. I am proud to report mission accomplished on all points:thumbsup:!! Hope each of you set out to add to your own amazing precious memories over the summer of 2020 and were also successful in doing so!! Even though the open road still calls us,, it is good to be home!   3. Sure Craig,, on many occasions thru the years.. Never on one of my 1st Gens but lots of times on my track bikes,,, probably cause of the trauma those little suckers went thru.. I pirated the video that was in the 1st post in the thread that the link Freebird sent you to cause it was/is really straight forward and definititive in revealing some of the intricate parts often associated with an issue you are describing.. Watch it carefully.. Do you see the shaft spinning behind the shift drum that is being rotated to match gears? It is the shaft in the background.. This is really important because without rotation within the tranny the shift drum action that the guy is showing in the foreground becomes almost impossible.. You will want to mimic this background shaft action while moving your shifter up and down,, I have found that the simplest way to do this "in the field" is by rocking the bike back and forth while moving shifting it... There is no need to concern yourself with the clutch operation at this time,, matter of fact,, stay away from the clutch,, instead of using your left hand to pull the clutch in, use it to shift with as you lean forward on the bike to rock it back and forth just lean down and lightly shifty with your fingers.. This will add to the feel you get when the gears mesh and it shifts.. Yes,, clutch functionality definitely can and does cause sticky/hard shifting but it does not usually cause the tranny to actually be stuck in gear.. IMHO, that is usually caused by a broken spring, loosened screw on the end of the shift drum, broken follower cam, missing pin in the shift drum locater or something like that = all parts that you are seeing in the video.. Very seldom (although it does happen and I have had to split cases because of it) does the repair involve internal tranny repair requiring engine removal.. The parts you are viewing in the video are located under the clutch basket and do require basket removal to repair.. If you check your bike out as described and it refuses to release from gear DO NOT STOMP ON SHIFTER as this can easily do internal damage.. Instead,, pull the clutch basket and get a peak under there.. Also,, if you do this,, watch carefully in the bottom of the case under the clutch for little parts!! You do not want pieces of broken springs or the like making their way into the tranny.. Make sense? All an opinion of course! Puc

To Dales family, THANK YOU for sharing him with us all these years.. He will never be forgotten. Zag,, I am truly sorry for the years you suffered with the after effects of AE. Thank you for fighting so hard like you did and for remaining a vital part of our family here in the club right to the end.   11. I know I am late to this game and you probably got er all back together and are out CTFW now but thought I would toss in the I have left over from our trip to things up a little.. I am still sorting out my left over, half used up stators/regulators from my parts bikes and can tell you that I am always amazed at how the heating up and burning off of the laminate in the windings can effect stator output. A good way I have found to know for certain that the stator is dieing is to watch its output as the bike warms up.. If the response to throttle on the volt meter gets sluggish when hot or when warmed up and a blinker is turned on I generally know I am gonna have to try another one of my parts stators.. I did actually buy a Ricks Stator for one of mine once and it worked great.. I am thinking I only paid 40 bucks for it brand new years ago, thinking they cant be much more than that now,, high output would be more I am sure. I am also amazed at how poorly built/designed the connector on the stator to regulator harness is on my 1st Gens and have always ran them hardwired.. I had one actually get so bad that it allowed the stator wires to contact each other and it cost me a stator out in Texas. For testing the regulator I always like to look for AC voltage appearing up at the battery and also for output about at the battery above 14.5 volts DC.. It is the regulators job to control that so any sign of either can only be the regulator in line of thinkin.. When I am done sorting thru my junk parts (this last one I swap in I got another 20k miles out of and it was half burned when I put it into use - I may be stuck buying new too this time) stators I will jump on ebay and grab a new aftermarket - I am pretty sure both stators and regs are still available there for not much money.. The swap out is simple and straight forward. Just use new gaskets, make sure you keep both the stator cover and mid gear cover bolts sorted and you note where the copper washer goes on the mid gear cover. Also use new gaskets.. I also didnt notice the year of your bike GeoBob? if its a 83/84,, maybe double check and make sure it has the upgraded stator splash plate and crank bolt orfice with cleaner wire stickin out of it.. Here is a short video of mine that may help or maybe just entertainment if you want someone to laugh at while doing yours..

Soooo true Rod,, sooooo true,,, it would take someone in a lot better shape than that of myself to accomplish that task but I do 100% agree with you,, THAT would have been a really fun project !! As you know,, my Vette dreams are all about bucketlisting.. That is why the "finished" red 65 caused Trooper to delay the forward motion of getting us home from Sacramento.. In spite of turning up some interesting facts about the red 65 (more on that in a sec) I did watch it go thru the bidding process and it did in fact not meet reserve at the top bid of 39000.. I am sure you remember what a quick VIN checked turned up on the 67 I was looking at (still not quite done with that one yet,, gotta yak with the consigner cause the phone number I got on the seller was not correct)? Well check this out,, go here and scroll thru the pics of the red 65: https://www.wyoderauction.com/lot/73508667/1965-chevrolet-corvette-sting-ray You will find a shot of it's VIN and find that number to be 194675s100762.. Now google that VIN and see what you find.. I about spit out the 2 stroke oil I was sipping on when I found what I found cause it all did not quite jive with what the current owner told the auction house owner and myself as we spoke to him on the phone in Wisconsin!!   18. I get it Casey,, my thoughts and prayers are with you my friend. I had a rough childhood and, at times, my dog "Doc" was my only friend.. To this day I swear he understood every word I told him as tears poured out of my 8 year old eyes and his great big brown eyes spoke volumes to me about why, at that time, I could not run off and live on the street, which I did when I turned 15.. I had such a connection with dogs and their deep love and commitment to us humans that even my hunting dogs got into my heart, an act that anyone who works sporting dogs warn against cause things can happen so rapidly.. Didnt matter,, my heart is like yours,, VERY discerning and honoring of such commitment and deep unconditional love, IMHO brother,, I think this is what makes you and I and others like us a special kind of people. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family/friends who had the privilege and honor of getting to share life with such a magnificent part of Gods creation in a friend named Jenkins and are now working thru the great loss that you are.. There is an old saying that says time heals all wounds but I truly think that is not totally correct.. I think some wounds never fully heal but instead we somehow survive and go on with thin scar tissue helping us move on. I mourn with you.. RIP Jenkins and this song, I dedicate to your memory.

I think @VentureFar, my brother by a different mother out on the west coast has a TON of experience with the MSR,, I am almost positive that one of the last times I saw him he pulled one out of his bikes maintenance department and teased me with it like brothers often do.. Hey Neil, your riding clothes smell funny or do you get strong whiffs or raw gas when you open that bag where you keep the xtra fuel??
  21. Terry,, our V-4's have a well known, and well documented issue with clutch slippage.. Quite frankly,, it is still my opinion that mom yam simply put to small of a clutch into these bikes at they do pull hard when they cross into HP range above 5250 on the tach.. This usually shows up in higher gears and with 2 up first.. Totally 100% repairable,, my advice,,, lean heavy on Skydoc for this,, he helped many many people solve this issue no matter which Generation of V-4 they are dealing with.. It sounds to me like you are indeed talking about 2nd gear issues.. What you describe is exactly how a failing 2nd Gear begins its complete failure.. My personal MO for having ridden the 83 (and one 84) Venture is this,, I discovered early on that the failed 2nd gear has no effect on the engines longevity or, even for ride quality when used for extreme long distance riding or even local fun.. The following explaination and the 2nd gear issue I am to explain is solely applicabile to the MK1,, 83/84 and the early 85's.. What happens is there is a soft shim on the end of the middle gear shaft (see parts 11 and 12 found here: https://www.yamahapartshouse.com/oemparts/a/yam/50042479f8700209bc787e38/middle-drive-gear that fail early into the bikes existence causing misalignment of second gear engagement ramps/dogs.. All of my bikes (5 of them) except the one I ride now had failed 2nd gears and I simply short shifted them out well past 200k miles of my own riding with failed second gears.. IMHO, these scoots pull hard enough and with enough low end torque and plenty of HP that I have yet to find a need for 2nd gear (except for drag racing against anything of the same hp figures,, V-Twins even with close to x2 the cubes? No problem even with no 2nd gear ) - I just bought em cheap,, real cheap with no 2nd gear and set out to wear em out.. Even with a fully gone 2nd gear, the repair of such is the same and fully doable, it does require a complete tear down though as there is no way to fix it without splitting the cases.. If you do decide someday that you would like to rip into yours and repair the second gear I would suggest strongly that you contact @Venturous Randy about doing a gear ratio mod.. Randy has spent plenty of time figuring gear ratios and has THE go to mod for gear these amazing MK1's! It involves using the gear set out of a later bike (and possibly the rear drive from a V-Max) and coming up with some outstanding numbers for gear ratios.. Personally,, I never slowed down enough on my bikes,, just ran em and ran em and ran em till they dropped and grabbed another one, to make the mod.. I bid you well should you decide to do it!! Puc

That is a really special year for both myself and my wife and I am just curious.. Concerning the questions about your scoot,, 1st of all THANK YOU for being another 1st Gen MK1 Venture owner/op and for doing your part in keeping these sweethearts on the road,, I too ride em! Even though they are getting up there in age,, IMHO,, they are still the best of the best touring bike known to man! I am biased, can you tell? I am currently wearing out my 6th one of these MK1's and have to tell you, all of mine have normally ran at about 1 needles width out of the red zone on the OEM gauge when at full operating temp.. Running into the red zone is,, IMHO,, a sign of problems.. The 83/84 MK1's like you and I ride came right from Yamaha with a plastic impellar.. I have swapped out numerous impellars of my own to the updated aluminum impellars.. On a couple of mine the plastic OEM impellar had lost it blades so much due to being plastic that the impellar was no longer moving coolant,, the engine was only being cooled by covection as it were.. If I were you that is the first thing I would check.. I would also suggest that while swapping out the impellar that doing the bearings, seals and even impellar shaft would not be a bad idea.. I have, on more than one occasion, done this and never had another water pump issue in +250,000 additional miles.. How many miles on your scoot? Do you know if its second gear is solid with no slippage and whether or not the previous owner had the soft shim replaced in the tranny that causes all of them,, the MK1's, to lose 2nd? Just curious. Wanna have some fun and set yourself up for getting miles ahead in the VR club fun? I suggest that you copy/paste your 1st post here into our Water Hole area.. Not many of these varmints visit this section and you will get a lot more action in the Hole,, in my opinion.. Worth a shot!! Oh yeah,, you also might want to get ready to be asked for pictures of your bike.. I swear, a lot of these lop eared varmints cant read so they depend on pictures a lot.. Just an fyi.. Welcome and enjoy!! Puc""" and then might add,, WOWZY WOW WOW WOW TERRY,, SHE IS A DANDY!!!! BEAUTIFUL SCOOT MY FRIEND,, JUST BEAUTIFUL ,,, MAJOR !! Would also like to add,, looking at the static stance of your scoots suspention,, it appears that it already has progressive springs up front as I dont see the normal sag going on that come stock with the Ink Pen springs Mom Yam ships em to us with.. On the other hand,, it is entirely possible that you have air in the front forks and that could be fooling me.. If it were mine I would empty the forks of air and check its stance,, if she shows sign of weakened springs I would be replacing those pronto if it were mine.. Also,, the stators on these 1st Gens were iffy at best.. They came originally with an undercooled stator oil bath and had an update (like the 2nd gear issue,, NOT a recall,, just an update) issued consisting of a splatter plate and an orfice in the crank bolt to squirt oil onto the splash plate.. Also, many of us MK1 riders have found it benificial to cut out the stator wire terminal behind the left side cover (hanging on the frame) and hard wire it as many of us have found that terminal to be problemactic and,, some of us (me included) have had that terminal fail causing the stator wires to short against each other causing instant stator failure = this is known to happen at the most inopportune times.. Another thing I would do if it were mine is I would pull the carb diaphrams that operate the slides and check them for condition.. If they are pin holed or torn I repair mine with E-6000 and currently have 3 of those in my 1st Gen with over 30000 miles on them and still going strong.. I used YamaBond 5 for this for years but E-6000 appears to be doing a better job.. After checking those diaphrams and with each oil change when home I would sync the carbs.. Pick up a cheap set of vacuum gauges and learn to use them.. Carb syncing is a 20 minute job on these once ya get the hang of it and the bikes LOVE to be in sync.. There,, combined with all the other suggestions,, that should give you something to ponder.. Hope this doesnt scare you cause I gotta repeat,, you done got your hands on one of,, if not THEE,, best touring bike ever made with REAL capabilities of taking you anywhere you wanna go with a highest potential of also bringing you home once you got it sorted out!! IMHO of course Puc
