GOOD ON YA BAY!!!! Been swapping my own tires for years using C-Clamps, driving a car up on a board and squeezing tires to break the beads too.. You mentioned Harbor for the "spoons",,, next time you stop in there check on their little bead breaker.. Thing works AWESOME and, if you catch a decent coupon they are not much more than 10 bucks (at least they were when I bought mine). Also found if you use some of that black tire goo smeared on the bead before mounting (like tire stores use) it makes em a lot easier to break down next time around - I have even had em come apart with a squeeze from my 16 inch channel locks.. You replace the valve stem?

So did Genesis smooth out and get his responsiveness back after running a while Coff?

Regardless of the "rant" brother,, you - Linda and the FUN you folks have had chasing the front wheels of your Miata while out exploring the country is an INSPIRATION my friend!! Been contemplating life after all these medical issue reside and gotta tell ya - your influence is greatly appreciated!! Yep,, not much of a campground person either, I actually prefer the "campgrounds with the little tombstones" over the ones with barking dogs/screaming kids and generators running all night .. 22 miles back in the boonies? THAT brings back fond memories of dirt bike camping - TONS OF FUN!!! Maybe a small 4x4 Pickup just big enough for two to sleep in.. Hot Dogs on the camp fire, feet dangling over the rim of some canyon out in Utah,, staring at the sky watching for aliens

One thing for sure, weak batteries are not good on starters. Running a good crisp new battery is cheap compared to having a starter go south while on the road.

Nothing but dark wanna be clouds headed this way so far Deej.. I have been keeping a close eye on the sky though cause I KNOW Fool's trigger finger is getting mighty itchy to start his antics.. Thank you for asking brother!! In a spirit of gratitude I will encourage that lop eared Wisconsin White Washing varmint to do his seasonal test run with the nozzles pointing south!!

removing carb cables
cowpuc replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If I recall, doing the outer cable first and using it to hold open the butterfly so the cable guide for the inner is in a better spot helps.. I may have that backwards, been a while.. I do know that rotating those guides helps a lot.. Get the cable end in the little guide first and then pushing the cable into the groove with the screw driver tip helps too.. Also,,, it is always a good idea to use a cable luber and lube those lower cables when ya got it apart.. Nothing worse than going thru all the hassle we are discussing and 4k miles later have to do it all again to replace a broken cable because it ran dry and frayed apart.. -
I am sooo trackin with ya Bay!!! I got it bad too.. Years ago when I was heavy into dirt scoots the new "Gas Gas" came out and I stopped at a local shop to check em out.. First thing I noticed when I lifted up one to sit on it (yes, I did ask permission, ALWAYS) was a loud clunk - looked down and noticed the kickstand had sprung up on its own - salesmen looked at me and said with a smile = "they come equipped with a GP style stand" = it was suppose to do that.. Buddy yells from other side of showroom = "come look at this beauty".. I CAREFULLY placed the stand down, rolled the bike back to make sure it was firmly planted, got off and walked around the back of the bike and headed across the showroom. Made it to the other bike and CRASH:yikes:.. Turned around to see the BRAND NEW bike I was sitting on laying on the floor.. Salesman walks over and picks it up and says = "happens alot,, ya gotta make sure you point the front wheel to the right when ya get off cause those kickstand springs got enough umph to push the bike forward on the own ... Another one that ALWAYS gets my attention are the Harley stands.. They have a locking notch when the stand is down to prevent the stand from doing what the Gas Gas did.. Problem is that there is a fair amount of play in that notch right from The Motor Company.. Cant tell you how many times movement in that stand has given me an adrenaline rush when getting off a Harley and having them "creep".. You would think as many times as I have had to pick scoots up that I would be used to the CRASH but not so ..

And here I thought that lil divet in the plastic waterpump tube on the 1st Gens was some sort of high end factory issued internal coolant mixing device built into the tube as common as they are.. EXCELLENT POINT you ol snow monster you!!:clap2:

removing carb cables
cowpuc replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Going from memory here Gary so hope this is has some value to it , I usually back off the adjusters so I get as much play as possible - pull the cable bodies out of their holders. If memory serves me correctly - the outer most cable has a metal tube on it that also has the adjustment on it that forces the cable into a "90" tight to the frame. That particular one has to come out of its holder on the carbs to clear the frame. After relaxing the cables from the holders I weasle the whole carb assembly out of the bike on the left side. Once out of the bike I am able to turn the carb bank up on its side to work on removing the cable ends from their slots from outside of the bike. I dont recall ever having to remove any other internal parts, I do know that there is an arm in there with a plastic guide on it that you have to make sure the cable gets on the correct side of when you guide the cable back in. Just make sure you study the routing a little before taking it apart. I also use a long pair of thin needle nose pliers to remove or replace the cable ends and a long regular screw driver to help guide the cables back into their holders.. It is tight in there - kind of tedious work. Definitely not the kind of job you wanna do if your in a hurry.. -
the new guy needs some help
cowpuc replied to skruphy's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Dan? Is this YammerDan incognito? Just and with ya Skruph,, you see I got this buddy named YammerDan who has a collection of scoots like you and,,, never mind,, long story and getting way off track... 1st off to VR ,, with all those AWESOME Ventures in your stable - sure sounds like you landed in the right LZ my friend!! While never having taking a Venture to the GLORY that my good buddy @zagger has (right there with ya Skruph = EVERYTIME Zag posts a pic of that sweetheart I am like ) I did rat out a ratty ol 1st Gen one time a little.. The muffs and pipes had rotted off it from years of being stored outdoors under an eave so I took some 1 n 1/4 inch thin wall chainlink fence post and fabbed up some pipes for it. I then took some sheet steel and made up some "fin's" for the pipes by taking some bowls from my wifes kitchen cupboard and using them as patterns for drawing the contours for the tails on the sheetmetal with soapstone. I found that clamping the fins closed did help some with the loudness of the pipes (could have done the same with welding washers like Zag mentions or maybe even some butterfly valving like the old 305 Honda's use to utilize.. I did discover something interesting in all that goofing off.. It seemed like as long as I did not mess around with the original airbox design so I changed the airflow thru the carbs I didnt have to mess around with jetting.. That rat bike ran great with open headers, carbs synced up fine and plug color stayed good and wow did it sound awesome (LOVED THE FLAMES IT WOULD SHOOT OUT THE PIPES WHEN BACKING OFF).. Never even raised the metering rods in it and rode it all over including a fast paced trip to Sturgis with a buddy of mine.. Ye be warned though.. Start modding on that airbox - even with stock pipes and carb jetting becomes a must do IMHO.. As far the CMS = might wanna double check the solder connections on the terminal pins.. Have heard they are known to go south and loose connection.. May have to do some resoldering there.. All the best in your project!!! PS - Got a buddy here that collects VIN's for a data base around here - his name is @Prairiehammer - GREAT GUY!! Thinking his post about looking for VIN's is in the "1st Gen Tech Section" here on the site.. If you dont mind, you might wanna touch base with him cause with all those scoots you have (even the parts bikes) I am sure he would be thrilled to add them to his list... -
Fuel overflow from main jet air bleed
cowpuc replied to garyS-NJ's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sticky/bad float valve or stuck float with plugged overflow line for the bowl would be my guess.. Be careful running it like that cause it is possible to get so much fuel in that jug that it can hydrolock if I am correct.. You might try tapping on the body of that carb and seeing if you can get it to stop. Sometimes draining the bowl dry and refilling while tapping will dislodge float if its stuck... Dont be shocked if you have to dismantle carbs and do a rebuild though.. Might also wanna double check for fuel in your oil too before you run it much after tinkering with it.. Dont take much gas to contaminate the oil.. -
got a road trip coming up, anyone live along this line

Little south of us Mike but wishing you ALL THE BEST out there my friend:happy34:!! Looks like a trail to me!!! -
Heyyyy,,, Hi Spear!!! Like others have pointed out,,, being scootless is NOT a reason to say adios,,, au contraire amigo,,, its actually a good time to give us fair warning that you will be MORE now than ever !!! Don't leave mate,, tell us some bed time stories about hunting Crockeediles in the outback or something instead - THAT would be wayyyyyyy more fun that having you bow out my friend!! You aint gettin no farewell from this ol boy in Michigan,,, maybe a "gooday mate" but NEVER a farewell!!

Hi Ashers wife!!! I just read what you wrote to my wife - "Tippy" - who is sitting here beside me and has now covered the country with me a number of times on our 1st Gen and she says =:thumbsup:,, you are GOOD TO GO:big-grin-emoticon:!! No torture rack, no cramping from riding on the "pillion pad" of a Sporty,,,, total BLISS are her words:thumbsup:.. Having covered over a million miles on the 1st Gen Ventures since '87 and almost all of those with either the wife or one of our children in tow I can totally verify that sleeping passengers is very common, especially when you get beyond 1000 miles or 14 hours of riding in a single day. Mrs Asher, you are actually touching on a subject that I for many many years.. Having ridden and built a number of scoots over the years and never having had a 2 up that came close to the old 1st Gens in rider and passenger comfort my main was always wrapped around the of - how da heck did Mom Yam do dat.. I finally discovered the answer a number of years ago = Mom Yam actually hired a team of rider ergonomic comfort Doctors to get into the design of the bike (sounds corny I know but I am telling the truth:happy34:).. About the only thing I can add to the story to help in your upcoming miles of comfort is to tell you that not being afraid to move your feet around some while your in motion. Long distance comfort seems to be more attainable for all if when your hubby moves his feet forward (I like to ride leaned back and legs stretched out over the crash bars) you are free to move your feet forward onto his pegs if you feel the need.. It is amazing how just a small amount of movement can help:happy34:. Another thing about the 1st Gens (at least the early MK1's, pretty sure the later MK2's are the same) is they have adjustable foot pegs. We like ours full forward on both sets but inseam differences can change that.. I also run my bars full back and down (it's a developed "taste" left over from my Chopper days) so I can lean way back and rest on the passenger and rest the heal of my hands on my knee's while my legs are forward.. In this position I can comfortable enough that, after chasing the front wheel for a sun up till sun down tour I can find myself fighting off catching a snooze with my passenger.. Gonna try to include a pic of my old Sporty,, definitily NOT a comfortable 2 up scoot but include it so you know I know why you wrote asked about comfort. I also included it cause now you are obligated to post some pics of your future riding adVentures :guitarist 2: Now THATS what I am talking about!!!! Please tell Mr. Asher I said that and see if that dont get a from him.. Got a couple of em,,, can help out anyone looking for one at a much MUCH better than that!!!!!

Oh yea Snype,, I have heard of that "mod".. Seems like the groupies named the mod after someone.. I always call it the "Jake Mod" cause I cant never remember what it was actually called and I always like the term "Jake Brake" that is associated with Semi's.. Never did it to any of mine and always wondered how effective it was.. Hey Coff - if you find out that part number 33 air box thingy has a cracked seam or a hole in it - might not be a bad idea to ditch the thing like Snype did,, I forgot all about that option but have heard some pretty good outcomes by doing so.. THANKS SNYPE FOR POINTING THAT OUT!!

Why of COURSE you do brother - WHATS NOT TO LOVE?

Brother I KNOW,, makes NO SENSE at all does it ... Currently it seems our country is about a 50/50 split population wise as to whether or not we wanna completely solve the dilema you point out and cash in the chips on the big social science experiment our forefathers started back in 1776.. I personally lean heavily toward their original ideas and am in favor of continuing with the experiment and am kind of an extreme example that way (like being able to wear a helmet IF I want and still think we should be able to have hand granades, full automatic weapons and prefer the old "no speed limit" days of an "open" Montana). My neighbor and GREAT friend thinks I'm totally nuts an disagrees with me,, he thinks the experiment has gotten out of hand because the population of the U.S. has gotten to the point that we HAVE to go to total social Government control in our way of life to protect ourselves from ourselves and each other.. It will be interesting if/when those in favor of going to total social control (around here we call that "Socialism") by the Government get to 51 percent and we see our way of life for the last 240 years come to an end.. I have heard stories of how hard it is for people living in total social dominance to convert to a very limited government Republic (I can certainly see how our way of life could be TERRIFIYING if a person weren't used to it ) where individual rights are held in the highest esteem - it will be interesting to see if it's just as difficult to convert when going the other way around.. Good thing I am at the latter end of life cause I can't even imagine having to give up even my Cigars if they told me I had to and I enjoy riding without a Helmet when I want to wayyy to much:big-grin-emoticon:

,,,,,,,,,, EXACTLY SNYPE!!! = now THAT"S the kind of safety gear I would wear if I had a set

Because Tippy caught me bidding on a Kannon motorcycle with a built 302 V-8 in it on Ebay = looks at me and says "what cha doin?".. My response = "playin".. Her response "what if you ended up winning it?". Me = "go get it and take it for ride". Her response = "Doc said your spose to be laying low", Me = "take a peek = this scoot set's wayyy lower than Sis". Her response = "not sure thats the kinda layin low the Doc was referring to = should we call em an ask his thoughts on you riding that thing?", me = x'd off ebay Moral of story = if you wanna buy a 350 horse V-8 Powered scoot - do it in secret.. It's wayy easier to ask forgiveness than it is to get permission.. The End

Isn't it funny how gear heads spin out their souls to create bikes to their likings, then other gear heads are like and proceed to create their own versions of such.. Then, 10 or 15 years later the manufactures are like,, "guess thats what they want" and BINGO - factory one off's!!!! Kinda cool really!! Personally,, I think that lil Trumpet is GORGEOUS!! I would perfer it raked with an 18 over Springer hangin on the front of it but I am still caught in the late 60's so my opinion dont really matter AWESOME Don!! Thanks for posting this brother!! Ohhh,, by the way,,, I personally like this little bobber wayyyy more than the recent future bike with "no helmet" required safety features.. I'll take my chances on the old schooler
