Your welcome on the link Cammy - glad you were able to find something useful therein brother!! I havent went back and reread the link but back when I did that post I included pictures of the bleed back vent in the rear master therein. Are you referring to the plastic "L" piece that opens up the area in the master where that tiny bleed back orvice is located? I am assuming you are.. If so, here is what I do = I pinch off the hose running between the res and the master so I dont lose all my fluid. Then I remove the single philips head screw on the plastic "L" cover - now pinch the cover with my fingers and rotate it back and forth while pulling outward (may have to use pliers if hasnt been done before - be careful if you do not to damage the cover). The cover is "o-ringed" if I recall - in a side of the road repair I have just slid the cover back in after clean up and applying a touch of brake fluid for lube on the oring - snapped right back together!! While you have the cover off be careful not to move the rear brake pedal and activate the master piston - this WILL pull air into the system. What you do is take a wire from a wire brush or something similar (I carry a couple of those cheapy little freebie (with coupon at HF) wire brushes in the Maintentance Department on Tweeks and have used the wires from them for this process a couple times) - poke the hole at the bottom of the master (this will be the bleed back) - if this is where the problem is it WILL squirt when ya pull the wire out.. If it does - the caliper will release, put the cover back on, screw back in it, release the vice grips or hemostat from the brake hose leading to the res - carefully unscrew the plug bolt in the res (careful there - that res is easily broken!!) - add correct fluid to res BUT - like Bongo Bob mentioned - DO NOT FILL TO FULL!! Pump the brake pedal and she will be good to go = NO bleeding necessary!! ,,, hope I was talking about the right "L"

Not sure here if we are talking about a rear master on a 1st Gen? If so, the bleed off hole is located way down under the res (the res has a section of hose leader from the res to master cylinder - unlike the resevoir up on the handle bar master for the front brake or clutch.. I think The bleed back hole is to far away from the res and the opening in the res is to small to be able to actually see the fluid movement down there,, possibly.. ,, or am I totally and completely lost again -

Especially if someone used pipe tape to help seal the bango bolt - found that on one of mine - not a good plan

1st Gen Rear Shock
cowpuc replied to videoarizona's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Hey brother,, been sand baggin waiting for someone who really knows this stuff to respond - been long enough now I think I am gonna take a wild eyed hair brained guess at this.. Been around mono's for many many years because of my love for MX, Hare Scramblin and the like. Have rebuilt a number of Mono's and, from that experience (have NEVER attempted to actually rip into one of our 1st Gens so take this all with a grain of salt) I can tell you that because of the amount of pressure applied to a mono thru the linkage system - there almost has to be extreme high pressure Nitrogen Gas involved. I am guessing that, unlike the gas in a dirt bike being held in a canister external to the shock - because our bikes get no where near the amount of beating, the gas is probably sealed permanently in the shock below and putting pressure on a piston of sorts that has hydraulic fluid above it. That fluid is forced thru a shim stack or and orvice and there is probably a tapered metering rod of sorts controlling that orvice - not unlike the tapered metering rod and main jet relationship within our carbs. When you turn the dampner control there is probably a tapered tip on the end of the dampner cable coming from the nob that mates with the top of the metering rod moving said rod up and down (only saying up and down cause there is not space in the top of the shock where the cable attaches for the dampner rod - that metering rod almost has to be located down near the sump area above the piston in the body of the shock). If (and its a HUGE if) I am thinking correctly - the amount of pressure that the Nitrogen Gas is putting on the internal piston and thusly high pressure on the oil within = there would be at a high risk of doing damage to the metering rod assembly if the adjustment nob were not moved one click at a time.. That's my best guess brother!!:thumbsup: :think:On a side note - The "air shock" portion of that shock and its PSI serves a completely different function (if my understanding is correct) in application to what I just described above.. That said - if I am correct in my assumption - releasing the "air" from the shock and watching the bike move down in its static sag has NO affect on the Nitrogen Gas content of the shock. Therefore - should a person decide that they are going to rip into and take a shot at rebuilding one of these mono's - that person would be strongly advised to the fact (again - if I am correct here) they are playing with a loaded gun that has the potential of doing great bodily harm:255:..... Of course,,, as always,, ALL the above is theory based on your old buddies back yard torturing of motorcycles to make it around the track, over the jumps, across the whoop-dee-doos just one more time = hopefully someone will come along who really knows what's going on in there!!! :big-grin-emoticon::big-grin-emoticon: -

Your welcome Bongo and THANKS to both of you for praying for the little man.. Spoke to my daughter an hour or so ago and the Docs decided to keep Sam another night to monitor the sugar level.. They have the IV back out and he seems to be stabilized but they want to be sure.. Pretty neat joint - my daughter is officially released but they (the Hospital) are letting her and her husband stay in the room they were in (free of charge) for the time being.. She has to feed the youngen every two hours - doing so running back n forth from a Motel room would have been difficult - GOD IS GOOD BROTHER!!! Cant believe I am FINALLY a Grandpappy!!!! Wayyyyyyyy cool feeling I tell ya!! -

Dont know if you have been following Bubbers thread about encouraging folks to send a get well card to Black Owl? That thread can be found here (thanks Bubber for getting this all started!!): http://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?126760-Black-Owl We are thinking a "Group Card" for our hurting brother may also be an effective way to lift his spirits and be an encouragement to him.. The plan is to get as many of you lop eared "friends of Black Owl" VR varmints to simply wish our buddy a get well, love ya, thinking of ya, praying for ya or whatever you feel may lift his spirits to do so in written form. If your willing to, please respond in this thread with your kind "words of well wishing", I will print it out and stick it in the mail to our hurting brother.. Please feel free to write as much as or as little as you would like (I got LOTS of printer paper ) but please do take a second and get your name in here!!! By the sounds of things - our pal needs a lift in a genuine way!!! Thinking of leaving this up for,,,, say,,, a week before printing it and sending it off... Hi Black Owl, I heard through the VR grapevine (your buddy Bubber let the cat out of the bag) you are not feeling so well these days. Just wanted to let you know your in my thoughts and prayers brother.. Miss you around here on the site my friend - hope you get feeling better soon!!!!! Prayers Up!!! Puc

Hey Dog,, not sure if the 2nd Gen like you are working on will cycle the pump off the kill switch or not - 1st Gens will do so by flipping the kill switch on and off instead of using the key switch to do so - if your second gen will cycle pump the using the kill switch you should use that switch as its easier on the key switch. That said - what you might wanna try is turn the key on - listen carefully for the pump to cycle - as mentioned by Bongo, it will only run for short time before cycling off. Now either turn the key off and back on again or flip the kill switch to off and then back on again to get the pump to go thru another cycle. If you hear the pump "clicking" it is suppose to be pumping - as the bowls on the carbs fill to full the pump will slow down in it clicking until it stops. There will be a distinct = "click, click,, click,,,, click,,,,,,,,,,,,click" when they are full.. If you cycle the pump say,,,, 15 times and the pump never gets to the point that it is definitely telling you the bowls are full by the loss of the clicking sound OR you dont have a puddle of gas forming under the scoot coming from your carb overflows - you are definitley not pumping fuel to the carbs.. Make sense? I can make a quick video of that whole process if I am hard to follow (normal for me) in what I am trying to explain?????

,,, I just KNEW there was wayyyy more to your story than that Sling Shot brother !!!!!! THAT is soooooo awesome Larry - you n Joyce have been RICHLY blessed!! My girls who live in California will be here in a week or so to check out this first "off spring" baby - ironically it took their baby sister to get things rolling ... I am gonna show them what you (and Dan = 22 GRAND KIDS!! ) wrote and mention to them how far behind we are in the Grandparenting/Great Grand Parenting routine = lean on em a little bit!! That IV in The Kids beaner is for monitoring his blood sugar and keeping his sugar level up - he is a couple weeks early and is struggling with Low Blood Sugar - gotta eat every 2 hours to maintain a healthy sugar level. Not a really big deal but we would appreciate any and all thoughts/concerns/Prayers Up for the little guy while his body sorts things out!!! THANKS YA'LL!! -
Bub,, couple years ago one of our riders went down on his way to Maintenance Day - we got together and made a "Video Get Well Card" for him - people responded with enthusiasm and sincere sympathy - worked really well!! Wonder if we could do something like that for Black Owl in the "written form"? Maybe another quick thread/post letting people know about it and asking them to just give a quick word of encouragement/well wishes in that thread (could use this thread too - just thinking a fresh one might get more response). Maybe leave it up for a week or so and then print it off and send it to him as one big "Card" if you will.. I would be happy to assist anyway I can brother if that sounds like something you think we should do? Prayers Up for you Black Owl - fightin what ever it is your fightin right there with ya my friend!!

Count me in too,, SOOOO thankful for the good news Dan but gonna leave your Grandson on the list = Prayers Up!!!!

Neighbor and really good buddy of mine (rides a 2010 Ultra that I helped build - fellow gearhead all the way!!) is a Semi owner/operator that also does most of his own upkeep work on his Semi Tractor.. Not absolutely positive GnV but I think he gets his batteries for his "truck" from or thru Sam's Club.. Might be worth a phone call to em.. He updates em on a regular maintenance schedule and he gave me a couple of left overs to use for the lectric trolling motor on my lil bass boat - almost sure he said they came from Sam's some how..

Been a while but as I remember those Maxims were chain drive bro!! Tossin gearing at em is simple and cheap!! If it were mine I would grab a +1 for the front sprocket - thats like dropping 4 on the back! One of the GREAT advantages of chain drive!!! ,,, put another on Pucs list,, sorry bout that XJ!!!
