AWESOME BUDDY!!! Hope our paths cross somewhere/somehow this season!! Come up to Michigan this year and I will buy you a Hot Dog at one of our outings!! Saw Monty a while back at one of Don's MD's!! Still as spry as ever and definitely taking good care of your scoot - someday the two of us are gonna go find some great big V-8 powered Boss Hosses to play with that he knows about - he brought me a Boss Hoss cuzy cup from the last time he rode your bike over to play with those great big bikes and I still have it on the front of my 1st Gen (under the antlers - you cant miss it, its the only Boss Hoss cuzy cup on the front of the bike and it is signed by Monty).. Posted all of this to let you know your bike is doing great and still in good hands!! Welcome back!! Puc P.S. = all the very best in finding the next perfect scoot to meet you folks needs!!

Another thing you can try is - sit on the bike so its not leaning over, fully open/engage the choke lever to "CHOKE", turn the key on, listen to the fuel pump complete a run cycle, flip the kill switch off and then back on again to run the fuel pump thru another cycle, keep cycling the fuel pump this way until you hear the fuel pump slowly come to a stop in its clicking so you know your carb bowls are full. Now leaving your choke fully on, dont twist the throttle - hit the starter.. If it doesnt fire off with a couple trys, close the choke and open the throttle a little to see if its over choked. Also, blackened plugs will cause hard starting when cold.. Might not be a bad idea to stick some new plugs in her - gap em on the tight side of spec for room to spread, should be good for 15k easily if you dont over choke em.. If you have been fiddling with the sync screws with no gauges on her you will DEFINITELY want to sync her out (should get used to doing it regularly - its easy and fast maintenance).. Another thing that can create hard cold start is diaphram tears - lean her out some.. Also makes for very poor performance and lousy MPG.. May wanna check em.. Also look, listen and check for cracked rubber manifold and vacuum hose leaks causing lean if ya cant find it.. Another spot I have had issues with is high resistance on the plug caps - unscrew em and clean em up at the wires and internally on the resisters may help.. Know what cha mean about that DOG GONE - SCARE THE LIVING DAY LIGHTS OUT OF YA - WAKE UP THE NEIGHBORHOOD SPEEDO SQUEEL!! Search Speedometer lubrication - should find LOTS of good stuff to fix that horror story LOL

Yep,, if she were mine the first thing I would do is check where the cable connects to the carb - make sure that puppy is pulled back so the cable has very little slack in it when the lever is in the closed position. Also not a bad idea to check the bracket that holds the cable for being bent out of position. That thing is a little vulnerable when pulling the carb bank. Then as mentioned, operate the chock while watching the plungers where the linkage hooks up - make sure the linkages are in the grooves and the plungers are in fact opening all the way. Full open with the plungers is very important for cold starting..

Well call me a hippy in a tie dyed tee shirt - I aint never did know that's what those was called = I gotta get out more... Personally I like those longgg grips that came stock on the 1st Gens with no covering on em - I like the way they bend right at the very end just perfectly onto my knee when I am laid back with my head laying against Tippy watching the scenery go by.... Seems how we are talking bikes again,,,,, you get that clutch master figured out videoarizona ?

I was wheelin dealin at a large sled auction years ago,, auction was over,, people were getting up and headed for the check out line,, the auctioneer come back on the mic - says that "lot number such n such had a problem and they were gonna rerun it with no reserve - owner wanted it gone".. Look at my son and told him to check our list (I always did a pre Auction check on all items - checking out condition - keep from getting took...).. My list showed the item as a very good running 2 up sled with low mileage - nobody was really paying attention, I opened the bid at 50 bucks (auctioneer smirked when I did) - he couldnt get any more bids - we rode home with that awesome little 500cc 2 up sled on the trailer!!! Never know Hummingbird,,,,,,, just never know!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If ya win it - ya just GOTTA drive it to at least one MD/Meet n Greet brother!!

Certified Yamaha tech
cowpuc replied to lonzo's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Most, if not all, of larger dealerships up here practice the "no worky on 10 year old or older scoots" philosophy too.. Like most area's though, this creates a void that smaller shops have nicely filled. We even have numerous dealership mechanics who moonlight in their garages to pick up a few extra bucks.. Besides Craigslist - you might just ask at the service counter of a couple of your local shops (doesnt have to be a Yamaha shop) if they can steer you towards an independent who can handle the job. Also stopping an asking at smaller shops is not a bad idea either.. Word of mouth is also still the best way to find someone who knows what they are doing - searching for a "Certified" Yam Tech isnt always the only or best solution IMHO.. Could also run an ad in Craigslist too "looking for mechanic familiar with Yamaha V-4's" - may be worth a try.. -

Another one of my strange but successful habits I use when rebuilding carbs is that I always put my lips over the fuel inlet on the carb after rebuild (even if I dont replace needle n seat), suck in while I am tipping the carb up to make the float activate. When the air that I am sucking out of the carb bowl stops flowing out I pull a vacuum with my breath against the needle and seat and then put my tongue over the inlet to seal it off.. I leave my tongue in place for 30 seconds or so so I can tell whether or not the seat is holding.. Sounds corny I know but this little habit has saved my from redoing doing carbs a more than one occasion..

Random false warnings
cowpuc replied to slaghead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
If it were mine I would probably pull the headlight, hold a mirror on the dash so I could watch it - turn the key on and tap lightly on the wiring in there and see if I could make it fail while I played with the wiring... Them interrmitent electrical problems can be tricky.. Wonder if the lights flicker when all this is happening? -
Well Jav,, as long as you know you have the carbs isolated for diagnostic purposes - have separated the over flow lines that tie together so they are independent like the non Cali bikes are (go back and click on the part diagrams for the two bike - make sure you have the right "vent" line. Have the tank vent open to atmosphere. Have tested the fuel pump to make sure it shuts off (stops clicking) when the bowl fill.. Thinking your working closer and closer to another time of opening them up.. Is is disconcerting that all of the carbs are getting fuel into the over flows - sure leads one to think something is not quite right with the float valves.. Thinking I would leave the over flow hoses off it - cycle the pump till the bowls fill and listen as the pump slowly clicks off indication its at a holding pressure - watch those over flow nipples and see if they start forming leakage. If they do (and it sounds like they probably will) - take a long wooden dowel, hammer handle or screw drive handle and put it against a float bowel and rap on it.. Possibly you got some floats sticking for some reason.. Sure sounds like you might be dealing with the wrong float valves since they were all just replaced,, just thinking out loud - sure is strange that they would ALL be bad if it were any thing else.. It will be worth the fight once ya get it solved my friend - just the hassle of getting there!!

I have worn out several of those 3/4 inch Egg Shape pads over the last few years.. It used to be I could sleep in the tent with one - even just the sleeping right on the ground but somehow over the years I turned sissy.. Now for our house use,, many years ago when my oldest was 5 (I remember this because I pulled her and the other kids around the yard in the snow on it before I unwrapped it and brought it inside the house) we purchased a new king sized mattress from a local (Grand Rapids) mattress manufacture. I am not sure of the name of the place but it was over on Chicago Drive.. We both really liked xtra firm mattresses so we spent the big bucks and got their most expensive (which was actually cheaper than Poster Pedic or other top dog brands).. We slept on, kids bounced on, had camp outs on and on and on that big old bed with no problems until we moved into our new house.. It was still a good sleeping old bed, nothing wrong with it so we put it in one of our back bedrooms for when the kids or other company come for a sleep over party (several of you lop eared VR varmints have even slept on it).. When we moved here we had enough cash left over from the sale of our business and some properties that we decided to spring for a new bed.. Spent the big dollar (thing was twice as much as the other one was 20 years ago) at a high end local furniture joint. Got the extra extra firm again, pillow top (just like a good 2nd Gen seat ) and all that.. Shoooooot,, wasnt even two years later and we started noticing the old "lets indent and see if we can ruin a good nites sleep for em" technique setting in if we didnt flip it on a regular basis (every couple weeks - pain the butt - too old for that nonsense).. Talked Tippy into swapping em back - giving the guest room the new one and getting back the old worn out for us.. Worked great,, never a complaint from our guests (about being able to sleep - have had a few complaints about my cooking and keeping people up all night yakking)... Ya know Unc,, gotta agree with ya,, we really do talk about everything under sun around here dont we

Have knocked em off the wheels in every way under the sun that I can think of but never have I ever seen a set of those Sky = .. Got a spiffy little Harbor Freight bead breaker I use when swapping em at home and have always thought about figuring out a way to incorporate it into the Maintenance Dept on my bike (getting to old to breaking them loose with the 16 inch channel locks and C-Clamps) but, looking at those = thinking they would solve a lot of problems on the side of highway out in the middle of nowhere.. Watched the whole vid, that young man did a good job IMHO.. Spot on with gettin em hot first,,, personally not much for using Windex or soaps = if I have to use soap its a windex bottle filled with water and a half dozen drops of dish soap in it (just enough to make it bubble when ya shake it up - good for finding leaks too that way) - used windex and soaps in the old days and never happy with what they do to aluminum after long term use (especially noticable around valve stem). I like to carry a "splat" of that black slimy tire stuff they use in tire stores in a zip lock bag with a rag in it - just give er swipe - put the tire on and that stuff helps keep the tire sealed (fills in any tiny scratches) PLUS assists in bead breakage next time around cause it doesnt corrode/dry out.. Also like to use slices of oil jug (just the right plastic) or even milk jugs (little thin) to protect beads = work great and can cut em to size. Would absolutely want to drape a piece over those tire iron "ears" if you were gonna use em for bead breakin I think.. Also,, I have noticed that many times I do not have to rebalance once the wheels have been already balanced once. Just leave the original weights on the rims - line up the lite spot as shown - air em up and good to go.. Not always but this usually works for me.. Good vid brother - very informative - definitely keep my eyes open for a set of them irons or get out the wirefeeder and grinder to alter my tired old irons!! THANK YOU a quadzillion for sharing it Sky!!

Good on ya brother for being smart and not caving to em!!!! Them nasty lowlife scammers are a disgusting lot.. Thing that really bugs me when I get calls like that is the question of how on earth they ever found out I had a "Lowes card" or what ever in the first place.. The shame is, its pretty hard for the authorities to em and there are way to many folks that fall for their scams.. We recently went down to our local bank and enrolled in a new account that piggy backs our regular account - was told by them that they (the Bank) use this new expedited Account to be a firewall against scammers like your talking about.. Safely navigating this electronic banking day and age can be more challenging than 20 miles of Smokey Mountain twisties on a fully loaded 2 up touring bike!
