Yep,, stuck float, saturated float, piece of dirt in float needle/seat or the needle is toast.. Either way,,, fuel is continuing to fill the float bowl when it is suppose to be shut off and bingo - overflow... I have seen em so bad they will flow down stream thru the carb throat and fill a combustion chamber, contaminate a crankcase and even bend a rod if not taken care of.. Also possible to fill and exhaust system - even have raw fuel running out of header gaskets - having lots of gas soaking going on like that (all from a bad float valve) can be VERY dangerous.. The fix: You can sometimes tap on the float bowl with a screw driver handle or wooden dowel and knock some sense into the float - not a bad idea to give it a try - sometimes a stuck float will just come unstuck and be fine. You can drain the bowls and try tapping on em,,, works sometimes. You can try draining the bowls and filling them with carb cleaner thru the drains with a syringe. I like to pull the slide when I do this (inspect those diaphrams while apart) so I can fill the bowls till I see cleaner coming out of the mains into the carb throat - then close the drains and let em soak - works great.. If your float valve needles are shot (got the ridge) there's not much more you can do besides rip er down and replace em... On my first gens the over flows run down the back bone of the scoot and empty right in front of the mono.. I like to check those tubes and make sure they are not plugged.. I keep an eye on em for any form of overflow (watch for dampness) cause this is the first sign of float issues.. Not sure about the 2nd gen over flows.. Dont confuse these with the carb drains - on the 1st Gen the drain hoses are up above right under the covers for the slides/diaphrams.. Sorry about getting long winded,, its a flaw in my character,,,,, bottom line - DONT let that little overflow fool ya - it IS a crisis waiting to happen = FIX IT!!

Jack,, see if this helps,, scroll back up to post 18 where the vids of the cutaways of the engine are. Look carefully at the starting picture of vid number 2 in that post.. Without clicking on the video to make it play, you should be looking at the cutaway of the clutch and of the alternator on the left side of the engine. Look carefully right above the alternator and you can see the gasket line to the "primary cover" that goes over that entire assembly. It is painted red. Now go to the 3rd video (last video in post 18 above) and push play. Go to 1:26 on the vid time line and pause it. Now look carefully directly in front of the cam chest cavity - you can see the 2nd alternator with a partial cover over it and the bolts in the remaining cover.. Does this help?

Having fun with the new Venture at the Sturgis Rally..

Ya know,, I really am not sure why/how they did it cause its ALL still straight cut gears - maybe in the design of the clutch support - new clutch system is on the opposite side of the old ones and directly inline with the end of the crank.. At any rate - absolutely dead quiet from what I experienced.. Has straight cut tranny gears too and WOW does it have a sweet tranny.. If you got to my vids you can see in cut aways on the motor they had under glass all of which I speak.. Bottom line,, DEFINITELY a lot quieter drive train.. -

Really good question.. Of course Her and I talked a lot about this and I could give ya some cheap shots at what I can remember she said BUT - instead of doing that I think I will interview her and stick up a vid of her answers.. Tip aint one to pull no punches,, she and I talked about the "heat" issue and, comparing to her experiences on my Harleys (she spent a LOT of time on my Shovel and other newer ones) and on demoing the Indians - her thoughts on this one really surprised me... She also brought up some points about the rider backrest I hadnt thought of - also wind buffeting from shield up and down ,,,,, no detail here,, will do an interview for ya Ed.. Got any ??'s ya want me to include? Anyone else got ??'s.. Be glad to run em by her in the interview!! -
Thanks Carl,, probably just order up another Shink... Gonna wait till tomorrow though cause our local tire dealer may very well have a bunch of stuff on his end of season rack.. Couple weeks and it'll be September here and touring season will come to an end... WOW did that go by fast!

Hot Start Problems with First Gen VR
cowpuc replied to Shadetree's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Another little something I discovered a long time ago,,, if ya pull the starter down and clean the brush dust and other particles off the armature (just clean the internals real well) between all those little grooves and gaps the starter may go right back to being like new.. I am no electronics engineer but my theory is that any way for current to "leak" is a loss so I cleaned a problematic one once and WOW did it snap right back to top condition.. Also gotta be sure those end bearings are good BUT I have yet to wear a set out - always ended up being a dirty starter or bad connections when mine pulled hard.. Something else though,, a GOOD battery is a must!! Another theory that has held true for me is that a weak battery can actually fry a starter - I know,, makes no sense to some probably but low voltage on motor windings tend to heat things up... Dont fool around with weak batterys - keep a fresh one in the scoot.. -

Ride the red one Mark says!! -
Few years ago one of our members and good friend of mine, Monty from Tennessee, hook up at one of Don's MD's and had a blast!! Monty is friends with the Boss Hoss folks and brought a Boss Hoss Kuzy Cup for Tweeks . After strapping it on her front end, Monty signed it.. Monty and I always planned on getting together down yonder and going and looking at those Hosses together but it never worked out.. Fast forward to this years Sturgis Rally and LOOKY LOOKY!! Small world I tell ya!!

That was a cut away of the motor Jack and non operational - it would definitely be covered on the bike - maybe check out some of our test riding vids - should show it covered there.. Oppssss,, my bad Sky,, for reason that question was not on my hand written list.. I beg your forgiveness. THANK YOU for the compliments Bob - means a lot coming from you!! HAD A BALL WITH THE SUIT - double thanks!! Was planning on shipping the suit back to its rightful owner this week after cleaning it.. If it's ok I will hang onto it for a bit, there is a chance yet that we may make the NY Rally and it would be a BLAST to have it along out there.. If that were to work out, I promise to do ya right with even more GREAT pics n vids of Superman hassling the likes of Bongo, Big Tom and that gang!! What say you?

Yep,, they grabbed a bunch of my bladder when they yanked the cancer out me back in January and now I am a 2 oz pee er.. Not so bad but gotta get up frequently to go pee pee - not that much fun but better then pushin up daisies and not being able to give you guys a hard time

jakester was able to make the chosen meet time at the Yamaha Shop in Sturgis during the Rally and we met him there. He had the chance to ride the new machine before we did - EXCELLENT reporting here brother!! If your interested at all in putting a car tire on your 1st Gen ya might wanna check this vid out.. @stanG, or any one else curious about this darkside business, if you start at 9 minutes in, you may be able to glean some stuff that will help you in your endeavor.. GOOD TO SEE YOU MY FRIEND BILL!! Hope ya got home safely and had a GREAT Rally time brother!!

I'd check the compression on each jug with a compression gauge long before I started rippin er down to rebuild er because of vac loss if it were mine.. A cracked hose or two or a line off somewhere can cause a complete loss of vacuum really easily... Wonder if somehow the screw that controls the sync match between 3/4 and 1/2 somehow got screwed in and its holding the throttle plates open on the right side.. That make sense,,, probably not,,, worth asking about though I guess so I will leave it on here..

Heyyyyy,,, look what dah 1st Gen dragged in Tip,,, it's Stang!!! Wassup brother!! Glad you caught the screw in the tire before it caught you my man,, dont need no more pics of scraped up arms from examining the crete from my good buddy over on the east side thats for sure!!! Wish we were closer,, we could have an all out tire spoonin race cause I gotta do my 5th swap this year REAL soon (as in, before I go ANYWHERE on the old girl cause I dont like examining crete either!!!) What did ya order up? I been torturing Shinko's lately.. Friendly little tire with a really good attitude for operating in the rain, hail, cold, high temps and really decent on the twisties.. Fair price - last three were 76 bucks shipped from Chapparal off ebay - lighting fast shipping too!! They, Chapparral, are in Cali - less than 24 hour ship when I did the one at my daughters in Sacramento in July - the other 2 shipped here to Michigan in 2 days!! Something else to think about it,,,,, hooked up with jakester out at Sturgis - he is riding a purdy 1800 Wing.. Bill, Jakester, is Darksiding it and, come to find out - his Wing has a 16 inch rear wheel!! I have looked and looked for a Car tire for our 1st Gens and never was successful in finding a viable tire - did a vid that I am loading up on u tube as I type where I am checking out the rear tire on his scoot - all the info is there - keep an eye on the Water Hole - will post it up as soon as its done cookin.. Jakester is at,, get this,, 20,000 miles on his rear tire - x4 of what I average - can you imagine the work and hassle that would save if it works? Got a couple things I gotta check before I scoot to Discount tire and have one mounted.. Something I forgot to check was wheel width and tire width.. I am sure the car tire he is running will require a certain width on the rim to squat proper (ewie,,, that dont sound PC correct) and to wide at the tread wont work but hey,, worth checkin.. Hey,, good to hear from ya ya lop eared radio yakkin varmint!! Got that purdy Blonde lookin right fine!! GOOD ON YA!! All the best in flippin on the new rubber = clean the rims well, check the rubber on the air valve inside the rim for ANY form of cracking, get em hot first and those new ones will flop right on!!!

is I am sooooo 100% with you bro!! Fact is, when it comes to a REAL touring scoot - bar none = real deal Yamaha 1st Gen Venture. Tough as nails, fast as stink, pull like a ofreight train fully loaded with gear and the best friend on the back, extremely frugal on fuel, carve twisties like a sport bike, totally adjustable bars so an ol Chop freak can fold em in and back like a good siet of 6 bends and then lean back on Mama and ride for hours and hours in that lucious stock saddle (iron butt's unlimited) - drop a tent and get up and go back at it... Could care less about all those modern day buttons and bells... No interest in any sounds other than hearin the music the straight cuts on my clutch sings occasionally and Tip pretty voice telling me how gorgeous the country is around her as the three of us - Tip, Tweeks n I - participate in CTFW together.. Fact is,,,, if I was even remotely thinking of jumping into something along the line of another air cooled V-Twin it would DEFINITELY be another HD.. IMHO - when it comes to air cooled scoots dressed up like a touring scoot there is NOTHING as purdy or as soulful as a Harley Electra Glide.. Pull up a 2010 Ultra Limited in that 2 tone red/burgandy color (NO ONE - I MEAN NO ONE paints a scoot like them boys at The Motor Company), drop a tour pack dock plate on it so you can pull the tour pack at any time and have instant bagger - NICE. The '10's were the last of the front bumpers like the old school FL's = gotta be a 10.. Time your done you'ld have 20 large in her but cha know what,, being a Harley you would get half of it back if ya had to sell her in an emergency funds drive (aint no way a Yam/Indian/Victory scoot is even gonna come close at resale).. PLUS,, if ya ever did get the hair brained idea to actually take off and attempt a real tour on it - there are HD dealerships on every street corner to sell ya parts when ya burn er down.. Good grief what was Mom Yam thinkin,,, I just dont get it.... Hey bro,, speakin bout trikes,,,,, wait till ya see what Tip n I rode out at the rally... You remember @Monty? He's that varmint from Tennessee - he and I had a RIOT at Don's MD a few years ago.. He brought a Kuzy Cup to nail onto Tweeks that is a Boss Hoss cup holder.. He knows folks who build the Hoss down yonder and he and I were always gonna get together and go down there and stir the pot.. Well,, Tip and I hook up with the Hoss people and rode one - what a RIOT.. Got a vid, will post it up,, keep an eye on the Hole... You thinkin of grabbin that NY Rally this comin week? Tip n I are thinkin of hoppin on whats left of Tweeks and going over there and spying on that bunch.. Maybe even sleep in the ditch over there, wake up in the late a.m. and go breath on Bongo and Big Tom just to watch em squirm.. This 4th back tire for the season is GONE so I gotta spoon on another before we go if we do.. Also ruined our tent in a wind storm filled out west,, gotta dig up another somewhere - Tip's gotta have a working zip on the tent in order for her to be able to sleep (she's a sissy,, fraid of snakes crawlin in),,, would gladly give you our old tent with a bad zip if ya still aint found ur poles and was gonna use that as an excuse to not go and we did end up CTFW back to NY again this year.. Anyway,,,,, yea,, ya gotta ride this new one but I bet if ya do yo will find it as lazy as I did.. Your to burned out on the 1st Gens too -

They kept a VERY close eye on those scoots,,, otherwise, given half a chance you KNOW that is exactly where I would have headed .. Another tid bit of info on the new one that may interest someone out there,, the braking system is a total linked system controlled electronically (no proportioning valve like on our scoots). You grab a handfull of the front brake lever and it activates both front and rear calipers. Same with the rear pedal.. Something else the techs told me.... -
,,, :whistling:,, ,, :rotfl:,, :rotf::rotf: sorry bro,, couldnt help it,,, reminds me of when Ebay locked me out for selling antique BB guns on their site :rotf:,,, my kids found out about it and starting calling me vile names like "Gun Runner" and the like:detective:.. To cheer ya up,, heres a good one,, Tip n I were headed across the Republic of Nevada and came across this great big bill board that says "Shooting causes wild fires" with a picture of a guy shooting his rifle with a red line drawn thru it .. I chuckled and told Tip that someone should grab that liberal bunch by the nap of the neck and make em take it down till they can PROVE it = just keep putting that 308 to their shoulder and pulling the trigger AT THEIR EXPENSE until either a fire starts or their shoulder gives up and they cry uncle - bunch ah weasles.. My goodness,, what have we become
