Oil Filter for an '83
cowpuc replied to zagger's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Might wanna check the box and see if the new filter came with O-Rings for the bolt and for the cap too Zag.. Nothing more frustrating than to get into the project and find out your missing parts... Dont know about you but I always find that cap o-ring to be misshaped from laying in the package.. If you remove the old oring, clean the groove and then fill the groove with grease to lay the new oring in - the grease will hold the oring in place while ya tighten the cap bolt.. Also,, the old filter can be difficult to remove from the "bolt" - spinning the bolt while pulling outwardly on the filter will help.. Watch out for that spring under the filter = dont miss reinstalling it as it helps the filter stay in place within the canister.. Ok Zag,,, seriously,,,,,, I know you knew all that stuff but I just could not help write it just in case a new comer to the club happens upon this thread looking for answers... Besides,, my fingers needed a workout You are more than welcome brother!! Puc By the way Zag,, I just passed up another early Amen Savior frame for a Honda SOHC motor.. Had about a 10 over front end hanging on it and it appeared it was raked for a little more = maybe a 14 over.. Told my wife I wish I felt a little younger cause I I would LOVE to build another chop to "compete with Zags Beast with"...... LOVE your scoot bro = he's a DANDY!! -
,, my bad,, almost forgot one of the most important things here (I aint like the normal lop eared varmint around here - I actually had an upbringing/a mom that taught me manners ) = :group cheers: to VR Dab!! Glad you found us!! By the way,, speaking of club members herein,, some of them cant read so 's are ALWAYS a welcome feature!! Also, if you wouldnt mind sharing it,,, giving us the last half dozen digits in the VIN of your 85 will help us share with you whether or not you happened into a solid tranny on your scoot... Of course,, we love LOVE our old Ventures and hearing about them,, miles on the odometer and any history of the scoot would also be fun... We're not what you might call 1%ers = when it comes to our Ventures more like hard hard core 1/2%ers ..

All GREAT info IMHO!! Might add: Make sure you have a good, oem air filter in a good air box at final tune.. Remove the carb slides/diaphrams - check diaphrams very closely for holes. Pay special attention where edge of diaphrams meet carb body. How many miles on bike? +200k miles known to produce wear in emulsion tube area where metering rods ride allowing mainjets to pass more fuel than they should.. I had one that was so bad it ran very similar to yours = MPG was HORRIBLEa,, running REAL fat!! Cured with 25 cents worth of nylon washers used as shims to adjust metering rods.. Put bike on center stand, cycle fuel pump at kill switch until pump fills bowls and shuts off, attach syringe to carb drains one at a time and pull fuel from carbs and compare fuel amount of each bowl with syringe = easy and very accurate way to see if you are overfilling on a carb or two or three.. Plugged mufflers from mice taking residence in them will act like you describe.. Easy way to know for sure is remove muffs and start her up - wick er up and see what happens.. Go back and reread what VAz wrote about the advance vacuum line!! DEFINITELY double quadrupal check that line very carefully, also check the little control valve in that line.. Our 83's advance off a carb and the vacuum ports on the intakes are all plugged at the nipples.. I did have 1 1984 though that, if I am correct, was "plumbed" like your 85 with a vacuum line coming down to the nipple on the #2 intake for the spark advance.. You will DEFINITELY want to check that line all the way up to the TCI cause if she's suckin air - your scoot is getting NO spark advance and will ultimately be running like a tired old push rod V-Twin instead of a tarmac shredding V-4..

Oil Filter for an '83

Same same 83 to 93 1st Gens and all the pre 1700cc V-Max's... Go for it Zag!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! As long as you didnt do any modding to the oil filter canister on The Beast when you did all that choppin!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! -
oo It appears that the dyno numbers on the new one are coming up short from what was predicted.. Latest figures seem to be hovering right around 95 to 98 rear wheel on the new one - actually lower than the earlier model.. Given, the '33 is still significantly lighter than the '32 is making the HP/Weight ratio's favor the new one BUT we are no longer talking apples to apples because now we are talking sport touring (the 1833cc) to full touring bike (the 1832cc) and Mom Honda is still advertising the new one on its added performance compared to its competitor - the Beemer 1600 (137 to the rear wheel). I have only been reading about the new one and gotta admit,, because of it's likeness to the 1st Gen Yam with its clam shells, 4 valves, smaller size and tighter flooring space (I actually like the snugness of the 1st Gen cockpit and have always said the 1st Gen Mk1's were Sport Touring scoots) I REALLY like the bike but I am still confused as to why Honda built it to obviously compete with the Beemer and having left the "touring bikes" as shown in the article I mentioned behind and then trimmed its "Wings" after the fact... Just makes no sense.. On another note,, and maybe something that will restore some much needed stability to my pea brain,, I did just read where a new owner of a BMW Grand America is debunking all the talk about the Beemer also being speed limited (another source of confusion - rumor was that BMW was limiting that AWESOME 1600cc road ripper to - get this = 101 mph,, what dah heck,, made no sense = moped speed!!). Apparently his new bike is NOT speed limited and he knows from experience!! After finding this out, he went back to his dealership and asked about it and was told that "101 mph is the SUGGESTED top speed when the top box is attached!!".. TOTALLY different that an actual speed limiter like the Honda has set a 112 mph.. The return of the RIDER CONTROLLED MOTORCYCLE = FINALLY SOME SANITY!!

Some guys like the seemingly harmless low keyed full dressers while others prefer the adrenaline pump of attempting a relationship with a high strung naked sport bike.. Still others fall for the more Adventurous bikes and others even try to stretch things by hanging out with dual sport types.. Then there are custom minded varmints who you just never really are sure about, one day they may be hanging out with a long legged chopper and then you see them flirting with a dorky little moped while smoking 2 stroke oil together down on the corner.. Thing is though, even these custom minded bikers, as odd as they are, will probably be spotted in the long run having the most fun of their lives riding a sticker covered beat up old Venture with their life long best friend who will also have the smell of fresh peeled stickers on her hands sitting comfortably in the passenger seat of the bike that ends up forming the only legal and healthy threesome known to man.. Yep,, strange world indeed.......

,, To ride it or to fix it - THAT is the question Puc's version of a Shakespearean actor:

Coming strickly from a 1st Gen opinion with no 2nd Gen experience what so ever (put that in the perverbial everyone has an opinion pipe and see if you can get it to light ), my experience is the Commander 2's are great long distance - high wear tires but not worth their extra cost per mile. They also tend to be considerably harder in rubber type which makes them so-so on the twisties and in the rain in cooler climates but awesome for high temps but = pricey.. I think @VenturousRandy ran and liked the Avon Cobra's - I liked them but found their random tread design (looks cool) to cause strange viberations when the tire got worn about 1/2 way down... Kind of a "whaa whaa whaa" feel even when going straight but just a little worse on the corners.. I always liked E2's and ran out LOTS of em, then Dunny came out with the disaster called the 404 which just did not wear good at all.. I got nothing on the E3's.. Shinko's are AWESOME!! @videoarizona turned me and Tweeks on to the Tourmaster's = excellent ride, excellent mountain tire, excellent off road tire, excellent high temp tire, very good repetitive balancing tire (all really close to perfect right out of the mold - I balance my own tires) at a very good price!! I also have ran Kenda's and they did pretty good.. They did tend to get real noisy in the corners (not as bad as Metz or Dunny's though) at 1/2 way point.. Definitely not the consistency of balance right out of the mold the Shinks have IMHO.. Also ran a "Full Bore" home from California a couple years ago = CHEAP rear tire (think I paid $58 for it and spooned it on at my son-in-laws in Sac and headed out) @ Yamaha spec for my 1st Gen .. Loaded up with gear, Tip on the back and that off brand cheapy "Full Bore" thing did AWESOME out across the desert region - one of the best tires I have ever ran out.. Now I am checking out tires for my "R1" (seriously,,,, it had BRAND NEW Carbon Fiber Dunnies on it last spring = NO hole shots,, just some fun wickin her up on my local "race track" = last time I was out with a Corvette "ZR" and waving at the driver while running 170 mph next to his window = get home and find that rear Dunny showing carcass at a pencil width wide in the center of that $300 tire:doh:.. I am feeling a little better so been pricing tires for it and noticed that "Full Bore" makes a "ZR" rated rear tire in my R1 size (190/50/17) for $85!! Thinking about it.. Last I knew "Chapparal" was having a huge Dunlop Tire sale happening. By 2 tires and get $50 in MasterCard money back and also get free shipping.. Having bought MANY tires from them, I also know they 100% price match so if you/I want to shop Ebay, search lowest price and pass it on to Chapparel they will match it!! I gotta call them soon and see if they will price match AND still give the Master Card $50 Cash too (worth a try).. Might be worth looking into to see if the sale is still going on for your tire needs too Papa??!!

A note to Bob: Please make sure you dont get the underground PVC conduit for the electrical mixed up with the underground PVC pee tubes..

Indeed Cha,, that torque figure is worthy but,, as usual with the new breeds coming out,, I am still confused and have been that way since the unveiling of the new Venture last year... Stuff just dont make no sense to me no more.. Talking the new Wing,, I have been following it (even joined a couple Wing sites) with enthusiasm since reading about the changes Mom Honda made and their open announcement of leaning toward a smaller, lighter, performance orientated machine with this new one.. Matter of fact,, I just got my new "Rider" magazine that has the "Titans of Touring" comparison in it - featuring the HD Road Glide, Polaris Roadmaster and the Venture TC - where the editor states that Honda is no longer pushing the Wing into touring (now sport touring) and is off chasing BMW in the sport touring market so the Wing was not included in their test - WOWZY was I shocked!! Having read that comparison now (it did give hard evidence to why my seat of the pants dyno told me the new Venture was way down on power compared to the earlier 113 inch found in the Strats/Raiders - more on all that in a different thread sometime) and following along with some of the stuff coming out of reading new owners reports on the new Wing, I am even more confused about what this new Honda is actually all about.. Initial reports were wayyy more torque, more HP to compliment its sportier weight and stance.. Coupled with an amazing new suspension package that was clearly aimed at the younger generation with a performance base.. Problem is, the real numbers seem to actually be short in the HP realm when compared to the earlier 1800 even though the new one has 4 valve heads.. The confusing part is that building for high torque (like Honda obviously did) is usually a process used when talking long distance touring bikes like the "Titan's of Touring" article was talking about and no so much the world of performance sport touring like Honda has been advertising the new Wing under.. There is a LOT more to the confusion too Cha (like the suspension = you should go read the pages and pages and pages of stuff about that - almost like Honda suspended this thing with it still being a "touring lounge chair" in mind.. Just really confusing for this old varmint.. I know,, I have brain fog (probably from drugs I am taking for some medical issues) real bad and am probably really confusing you too now.. Here are some things have assisted in the Dr.'s in twisting my brain at all levels... See if you can make sense of any of this: 1. Honda produces a new Wing to compete with the 160 Hp Beemer, using adrenalin pumping technology as seen in their CRF Mx scoots, they come out with 4 valve heads and a completely revamped smaller in physical size motor that is actually 1cc larger than the old one and they move the engine forward in the frame for better handling (GOOD MOVE IMHO) and all that BUT - in the end,, they chop the HP, shrink the intake so it cant breathe and speed limit the amazing new sport tourer (that reminds me of my 1st Gens with its little clam shell bags) to 112 MPH so even their 600cc Silver Wing scooter will whip it - what dah heck? 2. As far as current modern day NEW actual touring bikes (as compared in the magazine I now have in my possesion) - of the three modern day bikes now being produced for long distance, 2 up touring,, only the HARLEY DAVIDSON is water cooled - what dah heck? 3. If a person wants the added protection and stamina that shaft drive offers, you now have to go sport touring like a Connie or an FJR.. It used to be that sport bike guys (and sport touring guys in my recall) were the ones that REALLY liked the chain drive idea because of the gearing possibility it offers.. Being able to drop a tooth on a front sprocket when trail riding or raising one tooth for some long distance MPG gains has long since been forgotten I guess - what dah heck? 4. Yamaha, Polaris, Honda and HD are all pretty much neck to neck in pricing on their new scoots even though Honda is wayyyyyyyyyyy ahead of Yamaha, HD and Polaris in both RnD costs and manufacturing costs in comparison (Honda offers the DCT, is water cooled, shaft drive = wayyyy more expensive to produce).. Yamaha and Polaris actually went wayyyy up in MSRP when compared with their earlier price points for prior touring model when considering techology improvements and Polaris is SKY HIGH when compared to any of them (including HD) when pricing accessories/repair parts = its almost like they (Polaris) has come to the conclusion that the American consumer will gladly pay 4 or 5 times the cost per part of its closest competitor as this outlay of money gives the modern day biker some form of "better than the other guy" status.. What dah heck?? 5. As they have tried unsuccessfully (sales wise) many many times over in many different models, Honda spent big RnD dollars to produce this new Dual Clutch Tranny (automatic). Honda was predicting that this new, no hand clutch, automatic would sell at about a 30/70 ratio compared to its new, 6 speed manual shift counterpart.. In fact, that number is actually turning out to be the other way around with the new automatic wayyyyyyy outselling the traditional manual shift.. Talk about adding to confusion? I always thought "riding" a motorcycle was all about learning to slow ride via precision use of clutch, brake, throttle control so you didnt fall down,,,,, or learning to speed shift at just the right moment to beat the other guy in a nose to nose drag race or having perfect control in cornering via throttle and brake input.... What dah heck.... I am so confused I think I am getting to old for this stuff or something Cha..

THATS IT = ""LOL!""!!!!!!!! THE BEST 3rd POST BY A NEW MEMBER I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! Hey Gazer,,, :welcome1:to the club!!!!!

OUTSTANDING AND CONGRATS SAILOR!!!! Even though I gotta admit when I first read your post I was hoping this was gonna end with "I wanted a Muscle Cruiser so I went and looked at the Diavel and sitting next to it was this real pretty 1700cc V-Max in all it's glory and that's where things got interesting" Did your son pick up one of the new V-Twin Ventures?

AWESOME!!!!!! ,, if I had a 4x4 tractor set up like that the 1st thing I would do is build a really cool campground complete with underground PVC Pee Tubes sticking up so alllllllllll my biker buddies could stop and camp for free any time they wanted to.. :big-grin-emoticon:

Hmmmm,,, my son installed one of these little Alexa machines at our house a while back.. The lady inside that little device is actually proving to be fairly accurate and intelligent, for instance,, I just yelled "Alexa, what time is it and her reply was right on target according to my computer clock.. She also is VERY accurate with phone numbers, alarms and all that stuff.. While I still have not figured out how to get her to go downstairs and swap in some new plugs in Tweeksis for the summer,, I did just ask her when summer was gonna get here so we could go riding and I think she said June 21'st Roller.. Hopefully she is wayyyyyy off and you, my brother,, are closer to reality with that prediction!!!

That's cause you done created what is known as a negative vacuum with your, "gotta mow more comment" DanL.. Life has taught me that vacuum's are like most other things in life, there are positive vacuums (like the type used in making our V-4's run) and there are negative vacuum's like the one you inadvertently created with the lovely Warden. I know you know enough about x4 carb vacuum's to make the V-4's hit on all 4 so I wont tell you all I know about those positive vacuum's but I think some study into negative vacuum's may be in order.. Not just for your benefit but also in a refresher course for your side kick up here in Michigan cause its almost time to ride and, for me anyway, that indicates a high probable time for producing negative vacuum's around here so,,, here goes.. Basically, this is how it works.. Anytime you or I remove, or even attempt to remove, any form of suggestion coming from those holding life and death over us or, in a lesser value, who hold final decision making power over us, we create a negative vacuum if we dont instantly and immediately replace the suggestive move with one of a higher esteemed value.. I know you know exactly what I am talking about but I probably should give an example of what I speak.. Example: If, instead of stating that "planting grass creates more mowing" and thereby creating a negative vacuum that was sucking you towards lodging in that perverbial dog house,,, perhaps a comment like "I REALLY like the way you are thinking here Dearest Warden of mine and I can see where we need to get something over that dirt so mud quits finding its way into the house"... This first return comment is VERY important because it lets them (the Boss) know that we heard them and we think they are of superior intelligence and so on and so forth.. Next phase is what I call the "willing to spend" phrase and usually involves a little math.. Here is how it works: You have cost out what seeding, planting, maintenance and so on will cost over the next 25 years and then build a cost comparison between that and covering the yard in 4 inches of concrete at this present time.. It is legal to use cost accounting and depreciation factors when doing this IMHO.. If needed for producing accurate sounding figures to put you over the top of proving the concrete will be the better value in the long run = any good MALE accountant can help with this.. Once you have gathered this info (some of our brothers successfully skip the above advanced method of creating positive vacuum and just spew out numbers but,, in your case as in mine DanL',, I STRONGLY suggest that you make sure your numbers jive BEFORE you produce them as I have a hunch "The Warden" is like Tippy and already on edge having been married to us for over 20 years) then it's a simple matter of presenting the upscaled, positive move comment that will create the positive vacuum that will fill the void in the best interest of both parties. I would say something like: "Even with the added cost of the go carts to run around the go cart track on and fuel to operate them, at the 25 year interval we will still be $3600 ahead of the game and LOOK at all the fun you and I can have chasing each other around on the concrete while knocking any dirt/sand heading for the house off the track with the brooms I will tie wrap onto the back of the go carts".. Saying like that while your bolting a V-4 out of one of those Ventures in your garage into a recently built go cart frame with a little license plate on it that says "The Warden" on it is SURE to create positive vacuum!! Hope this helps!! Puc

WOWZY WOW WOW WOW Birdie,, My 1 year old grandson,, really wore me out last week (guess I am feeling some of that age thing too VAz) so I am wayyy to worn out to write a thesis about what I see in those pics so I will just repeat my a fore mentioned appeal with another WOWZY WOW WOW WOW

Awe.. Thump,, first and foremost = WELCOME BACK,, sorry to hear about the health issues you folks been dealing with brother but glad to hear your injuries are coming around.. Also sorry to hear about you selling the Venture but I do get it and wish you all the best therein! I think you should post some pics up here by the clubs cement pond so all us lop eared expert bike pricing varmints can , ,, ,, , and see if we can come up with a +:2cents:x:witch_brew: for you. Maybe a good place to start would be to gather some factual carb rebuild numbers.. I have no idea but I think I remember bongobobny once stating he thought $800 would cover parts for a complete go thru on a 2nd Gen... Still a good idea on your end to stick some fresh gas in her, charge up her battery, check her oil for fuel smell (incase she had a stuck float valve), pull the air cleaners and look for mice nests, cycle the fuel pump till it primes solid, pull the choke, keep the throttle closed and give er a try... One never really knows about that old Yamaha Venture sitting in the shed

ROCK AND ROLL DEEJ!!! ,, showed that pic to Tweeksis and, in her words = "I think thats the little girl my Aunts Cousin had - definitely part of the family but wayyy younger and not as elderly elegant as I" Looks like you and BlueBeard had a BLAST down there DJ!! THANK YOU for the AWESOME 's!!!

What in the wild wild world of soggy left over Hot Dog buns is going on here!! Been down south hanging out with my 1 year old grand son (who is WALKING now!!!!!!) for a few days (RIOT),,, my little Trac phone stayed home with a dead battery (just checked it,, had all kinds of messages on there = some from you lop eared varmints = one was from MiRider in response from a post I made light years ago about the Voyager Trike Kit = HI DAVE,, also a recent one from "John" or "Tom" in my voice mail = no number so hope you find this brother and know all is well and many THANKS for checking on us.. Had Tippy's smart phone (I aint smart enough to have one) so did get to play on the net a little but couldn't get on here with that confounded thing smarty pants thing... Found a message from you @Marcarl on there, TOTALLY understand the comment "NOT to interrupt your dinner" remembering how you dont like to be bothered when your eating (sort of like tryin to sneak a fresh kill rabbit away from an old hound dog = grrrrrrrrr) = THANKS FOR YOUR CONCERN CARL = your ol buddy is still kicking!!!!!! Had a message from Tip's Mom who was worried sick about us.. Tip just hung up from letting her know we are both ok and back in town. Found another from @VentureFar - will return your call soon here Neil.. @Condor - that 744 number went out with an old internet provider and OOPPPSSSS,,, must of forgot to update here on the site.. I will try to remember to post up the number for my trac phone.. I dont use it much though cause my son installed one of these ALEXA apparatus things in our house so Tip or I can just yell "ALEXA,, CALL 911" if we need to and it works great with other numbers so I use that thing instead of my phone LOL.. THANKS TO EACH OF YOU FOR WORRYING ABOUT ME = LORD KNOWS I NEED TO BE WORRIED ABOUT!!!! Love you guys!! Puc - out!!

2018 Yamaha Star Eluder
cowpuc replied to Rafterd's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
Enjoying your ownership ride reports and updates Rich = thank you!! Also enjoying any and all 's (I LOVE 's) = thank you for taking the time to share those too!!! Got a question for you. Noticing here that you owned and rode a Strat for ten years. I have spent some time on an 06 Strat owned by my nephew. After attending the unveiling of the Venture at Americade and calming down some (I was one who was really for a 1700cc VMax V-4 Venture), my wife and I packed up our 83 and headed for Sturgis to demo them. Having ridden the Strat considerably and many V-Twin Harleys/Indians - I thought the new 113 Venture felt considerably detuned in comparison to its counterpart Strat motor.. To me it felt like it was missing 10 to 20 horse by my "seat of the pants" dyno and its memory of my nephews 06 Strat. Matter of fact,, I commented to my wife and even the demo guys that it felt "88 inch Harley Twin Cam"ish to me in its performance (those were 70ish horse - maybe).. Later I noticed a cutaway motor (have posted vid of it) at the Star tech tent and, seeing that Yamaha added an extra balance shaft and an extra alternator to the motor it occurred to me that the extra weight on the crank of the new 113 may have been part of the lack of performance I had perceived. Having not had the chance to ride an Eluder and as a comparison, I would be curious of what your "seat of the pants" dyno tells you when comparing your old Strat performance experience with the new one? I also had quite a conversation out in NY and also at Sturgis with the Yamaha/Star guys and some of that fun :Im not listening toing centered around potential heat problems that riders may experience by Yamaha going with air cooling.. Having listened carefully to the techs in both places explain to me that "Yamaha had 100% solved that issue" I/we were anxious to find out just how true the claim was. Before we demoed the Venture I told my wife that I thought comparing a stripped air cooled bike to a fully faired with lowers bike would not be fair. I questioned the techs at Sturgis about the possibilities of removing the lowers and it was confirmed the lowers were not removable so I formed my opinion (and have written about it for months now) around a comparison between Harley's non-water cooled 103's and the 111inch that Polaris puts in their Indian model and the Venture all with lowers.. I thought the Yamaha fell right in between the Polaris (hottest IMHO) and the Harley (hot but no where near as hot as the Polaris). I also felt the new Venture was considerably warmer than the Strat but considered the Strats open air profile and the fact that its exhaust is tucked in differently (both sides exit on the right) than the Venture to be part of the cause for this.. Does this line up with your thoughts on a heat comparison? Glad you found us and really look forward to maybe meeting you somewhere on the road this season!! One thing for sure,, that GORGEOUS scoot of yours will not be hard to spot when out there CTFW Puc
