  1. Yep,,, this is a 50/50 crap shoot but before you do pull em down and rebuild em,,, pull the slides, fill the bowls thru the drains with Berrymans Chem Dip that comes in that 1 gallon dip tank.. Fill each carb using a syringe and keep pushing till the cleaner comes out of the mains (where the metering rod on the slide slips into the emulsion tube) then close the drain and let sit for 40 minutes - NO MORE - NO LESS = very important cause Chem Dip is harsh!! Suck the bowls dry, refill with normal spray carb cleaner and adjitate using te syringe.. Repeat till all you get is clear carb cleaner out.. Have used this method for firing up bikes to see whether or not they were worth spinning a wrench on... Sometimes it works, sometimes it dont and ya end up having to rebuild carbs but if ya gotta rebuild em anyway,,,,, hurts nothing to try IMHO..
  2. I am really shocked at all this Yam and truly sorry to hear of your plight.. Here locally in West Michigan the new Venture is actually a pretty hard sell for our dealerships. I know that our closest one (Babbitts in Muskegon) has them in stock and are shaving prices trying to sell one. The salesman who I talked to there when I went down to look at the new Wing simply said "dont look good for Yamaha" when I asked about how it was going with the new Venture/Eluder sales as I tripped over the red one setting right next to the entrance door... Our other local dealer to the north has historically a hard time selling streetbikes (still has left over Honda CTX's for CHEAP as an example) and they are in the same boat.. David Allen Racing is the name of that dealership if anyone is looking for a good deal on a new Venture - really nice workable bunch of guys up there!! This dealer is in Fremont Mi and is directly across the street from a Harley shop.. The two dealerships are owned by really good guys and I can tell you that in this area,,, the flow of HD riders jumping ship from big twin HD to big twin Venture is nothing like mentioned above.. Matter of fact,,, here in our area - it seems to be a consensus that if a person is gonna spend HD type $$'s for a big twin air cooled belt driven push rod touring bike they may as well just grab a Harley,,,,, definitely not like up in Canada by the sounds of things... Wonder if with exchange rates as they are and the willingness to deal down here as it is,,, why not drop into one of our shops and grab one?? I am really not to surprised that you couldnt get delivery to your door though right from Mom Yam as the bikes come crated and must be put together and as part of the deal I knew it was illegal for them to sell you a crated scoot.. When I had my dealership years ago I did purchase some left over Yamaha dirtbikes out of Canada though at auction (wow was that lucrative) all with MSO so the same rules may not apply up there.... Either way,,, sad to hear your plight,,,,,,, maybe time to call Mom Yam and see if she wont step on some dealership toes for ya... Seems she would after all the holdup and if she wants to sell the things and actually turn the touring world upside down like she said she was gonna do..
  3. WOWZY WOW WOW WOW is THAT drop dead GORGEOUS or what!!!!!! Thats so purdy I wouldnt want to cover it up by sitting on it!!!!! Would love to see more pics and some vids Chief - both very easy to do.. With pics the number one issue folks have (IMHO) is trying to load pics that are to big. I set my cheapy camera to econo mode and dont have to resize em before stickin em on the club house wall. If you find that you cant do that, resizing using "Paint" is always an option - clip em down to smaller than 1000x500 and you should be good to go.. Vids are wayyyyyyyyyyy easy,,, just load up to YouTube and copy/paste the URL into any of your post and BINGO - up pops the vid (demo below).. Its fun and entertaining IMHO but be forewarned - I find doing the vids addictive and I got NOTHING (well,,,other than my 1 year old grandson but his mommy wont let me plaster vids of him all over the internet:grandpa:) even close to as showable as the seat on your new scoot - you will definitely get addicted!!!!!! PLEASE SHOW THAT PUPPY OFF TO US CHIEF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
  4. Naaaah ahhhh,,, code says "all active lop eared Wisconsin White Washin varmints shoot LAST!!!! Bust it and YOU will be shooting your last shots at those itty bitty pieces on the ground and probably end up putting 2 dollars in the ice cream kitty per stop = naaaa naaaa deeee booo booo!!! Sold the '08 did cha????
  5. Sheesh Bongo,, one would think that all those years of touring on a scoot would have taught you to never leave home on an adventure like your on without your Carharts,,,,, or at least a good insulated leather jacket..... ,,,,, Short story,, you ever heard of "Santa's Village" out east,,,,,, think its like in New Hampshire.. One of the kids and I are touring out there years ago and stopped for a break at Santa's Village = really neat little kids park.. It had been raining and was chilly so we were still wrapped in rain gear when we meandered up the stairs to the little roller coaster that was getting ready to open back up after the rain.. At the top of the stairs was a big awning stretched over the entrance. In front of us stood a middle aged guy with sunglasses on and a huge umbrella opened up (which I thought odd as the area was covered by that awning and the rain had long since stopped)... We stood there for about 20 minutes when the operator stopped the lil coaster and we all started climbing in the cars... When the guy with the open umbrella walked past the operator to climb on the coaster the operator looked him with the big umbrella and the big sunglasses, then at us in our rain gear and back to the guy with the umbrella and said "is it raining?" Had to have been there but my little girl and I laughed and laughed the whole way around on that lil coaster,,, it was hilarious ...
  6. I have burned a LOT of 85 octane while touring out west on my 1st Gens and really have never had an issue - even loaded up and running in desert tempts.. As a matter of fact,,, I always thought they ran really good on the stuff - never did experience any pinging (IMHO, only reason to ever run higher octane - always seemed to me that the most power I realized was running the lowest octane I could with no pinging ).. I am actually glad that the 1st Gens were designed to use low octane fuels because I LOVE cow towning out west and there are many little one pump cow towns in the western states (not so much in the eastern U.S. but in the west this is common) where 85 octane is about all you can find. Is the new Venture spect for 91 or better? It would seem that being a low compression motor (9.5 to 1) designed for low RPM torque with a red line 1000 R's before HP is even relevant so it probably has no overlap in its cam profile that it would only require 87 or 89 octane.. Maybe not though being air cooled,,,,, motor heat definitely can effect preignition as the fuel gets warm in the intake trac and is pulled into a really hot combustion chamber associated with an air cooled motor.. Back in the old days when points ignition and easily adjustable distributors were all the rage us kids use to carry those funny looking distributor wrenches under the seats of our cars for drag race days.. We would toy around with octane ratings and distributor adjustments and looking for the lowest octane fuel we could burn with the distributor advanced right to spark knock and then backed off a little so it wouldnt knock under a load produced the most power and where/what we ran.. IMHO, using high octane in a motor designed to run on lower octane fuels is not necessarily in your best interest... As far as corn fuel being a problem with performance or high maintenance issues, my biggest gripe with the stuff is how hard it is on rubber in diaphrams and other rubberized carb parts problems.. With EFI though, I would foresee way less issues and actually, because alcky burns cleaner (ever see the top end out of Alcohol bike after its been run = WOWZY talk about clean!!), it seems like it would actually assist in keeping down carbon = a HUGE contributor to spark knock IMHO.. Personally,, in that the new Ventures motor is basically the same top end out of the Strat/Raider (same heads, cam, pistons, jugs, pushrods, cam chest cavity, cam, valves = big difference in bottom end though and smaller intake track and single throttle body instead of twins to reduce HP and increase Torque) and knowing Mom Yam has LOTS of time with that design - I would totally trust whatever those Yamaha engineers say to run in the thing and stick with it.. Cant imagine them designing anything to run non corn fuel in a day and age when getting away from fozzil fuel seems to be the direction we have been heading....

  8. GORGEOUS pics Dav!!!!!!!! Hope your 2000k ride is going just SUPER out there today!! RIDE ON BROTHER - DO US FROZEN LOP EARED VR VARMINTS IN THE STATES PROUD!!!!!!
  9. ,,, few more 's on the subject Raggy.. Thinking of hitting up the local car repair scrap bins and seeing if I can score a few worn out brake rotors = PERFECT for hanging from tree branches off in the willies and should give up plenty of "TWANG" when tagged.. Also a whole lot easier to drag around on the scoot for haulin em up when scouting the trail for such an event.. If we do this I will carry my Ruger MK1 with lots of xtra ammo in case some folks dont own a shooter (cant imagine that) and would still like to participate.. Thinking of a proper name for such an outing,,,,,,,, more I think about it,,, I kind of like "Shoot n Scoot" or an I.C.B.M. "Ice Cream Biker Meet" ..
  10. If ya havent done so, may also drop in some new (stock OEM NGK) plugs gapped at 32 thou (especially if you have been Seafoaming it as SeaFoam has a tendency to glaze the plugs IMHO) and unscrew the plug wire caps and ohm out the caps.. Then clip 1/4 inch of wire off the plug wires before screwing the caps back on..
  11. INDEED!! GREAT FIND CAMMY!!! IMHO,, Bruce Brown did a bang up job with On Any Sunday and motorcycling hero's like Malcolm DEFINITELY made it work!! It was a very special time of life back then - way before the tree huggers got wind of all our fun so MX, Harescrambling and BAJA riding happened openly and freely in every small town across the States... Japanese 2 stroke bikes entrance into the dirt world was HUGELY successful partially because of Malcolm and, some may remember this,, those wing dingers even made some AWESOME success in the street bike circles of the day with Yamaha's lil RD350 (the big 4 stroke V-Twin SLAYER) and Kawi's H1 and H2's... Definitely an amazing time to be young and a rider!! Lots of folks may not know this but because of his Native American heritage, later in life Malcolm set up and operated dirt bike excursions on Indian reservation property giving pale face riders a chance to see a side of America that they would never have been able to otherwise.. I got involved with another team of dirt hero's of the day back then.. A family known as "The Penton's", who produced some AWESOME dirt bikes right here in the states.. After some successful racing (USDT) on their part and in producing the Penton line, John (Penton) and family sold out to an Austrian company named (get ready,,, drum rollllllllllllllll) KTM who went on to develop some of the worlds greatest machines known to the dirt world.. Back in the 2000's I got an invitation to speak about the old days at KTM HQ in a place called Amherst Ohio and John gave me a copy of his memoir book which I absolutely treasure to this day.. WOWZY WOW WOW WOW the memories this all brings up.. Thanks Cammy!!!
  12. Besides a sticker I got a sovenier down there one year in the form of a traffic ticket.... Wasnt much later and I thought the city put a complete stop to the rally Skidder (you remember that or is my mind playing tricks on me,,,,,,,, again?)... Didn't know they started it back up...

  16. Mean while,, like a hound chasing its tail its time to get back on the trail...
  17. Hey Raggy,,, went State land target practicing recently and, in the process,, I got a whole new idea for a Northern Michigan ride called an Ice Cream Shoot... Numerous steel targets (old car rims so they "gong" when hit!!) are placed in strategic state/federal land locations in the Baldwin area.. The group plays follow the leader to each location, range rules will be 5 shots per stop, per target = for safety sake, magazines are left empty and each round is loaded singularly into the breach as the shooter steps up to shoot = hand guns only and caliber dont matter.. 50 cents into "kitty" for each miss hit. End of ride at Jones Ice Cream where Kitty is split between participants.... :duck::duck::duck::duck::duck::duck::duck::biker::biker::biker::biker::biker::biker::biker::biker::biker::fnd_(16)::fnd_(16)::fnd_(16)::ice_awesome-vi46644:ice_awesome-vi46644:ice_awesome-vi46644:ice_awesome-vi46644:fatsmiley:
  18. SAME SAME!!!! Been down playing with the kid,,, get home here only to find @FlyingFool had made a +6 inch deposit of wet, sloppy White Wash right in our driveway and it appears that he is perfecting his high temp White Wash as its 38 degrees here now and white wash is being added to the stuff as I type = CRAZY!!!

  20. Yep,,, not long ago I read an article about engine heat being a highly desired and required part of riding and touring on the Big Twins and keeping the legs roasted was one of the things that the Star design group sought and Mom Yam listened on. Things like strategically placing the rear exhaust header near the legs of the rider and passenger are part of this design.. Having spent a fair amount of time on the new touring bikes I can honestly say that, IMHO, Mom Yam put the new Venture right between the extreme heat of the Polaris 111 that Polaris uses in their Indian repop (wayyyyy to hot for long distance touring IMHO) and Harleys old Twin Cam 103 in either the Road Glide or the Ultra which was only problematic IMHO in temps over 90 degrees or if trapped in traffic jams (no experience on the new water cooled exhaust valve HD touring bikes to speak of - should have soon as my neighbor is now riding one and will definitely get to spend some time on it). Personally,, I think Mom Yam spent as much time on and did as well on the heat design on this new one as they did on developing the exhaust sound.. In the article I read, as I recall, being able to feel engine heat was only slightly above exhaust sound (Potato potato potato) in desired and needed big twin attributes...
  21. I am no guru on electrical stuff Cha but, IMHO, if you do have AC voltage up on the battery cables then yea, sounds like you found a faulty regulator/rectifier which definitely could/would cause stuff to pop.. Possibly a bad ground down on the reg/rect but not an uncommon failure of diodes/internal components.. Hopefully the ignition system is ok - some of that stuff is sensitive.. I would double check the meter by testing on another system,, say a car or another scoot.. Any system would be fine as no battery should be charging off AC voltage = make sense? If it does turn out to be a regulator - probably find a cheap used one on Ebay to test the system and make sure you dont have other huge issues like failure of major hard to find ignition parts.. I know the old Kawasaki's were extremely sensitive even to low voltage from a poor battery or bad connections = I think I still have 15 or 20 failed H1 Kaw 500 igniter boxes in my junk pile out back from those days.
