Just an FYI Chief,,,, some of the varmints around here may not know what your referring to when referencing your old Venture.. To some of us, when you say 2nd Gen, it means the '99 and up Venture with the Bat Wing, fork mounted fairing. The larger top loading saddle bag 1st gen Ventures made after '85 (starting in 86 and up to 93 I believe) commonly get referred to as the MK2's and the original Ventures get the 1st Gen MK1 label by numerous folks.. Of course,, as in all things,,,, who cares - dont matter really but just thought I would let cha know in case some lop eared club member varmint gets a happenin when ya mention your previous smile maker...
-
Post tranny issue '85 for me,,,, I always thought it would have been cool to have had a real deal factory solid 2nd geared MK1 to take to the limit...... Thinkin Tip would have fully enjoyed the xtra couple liters of trunk space too on those 2 month/+20k mile tours with all the tent camping we do...... Yep,,,, definitly an '85 MK1 Venture!!

Seems like someone was lookin for one a while back,,, maybe,, maybe not... Regardless,,, thought I best pass this one on: http://gl1800riders.com/forums/6-gl1800-classifieds-4-sale-owner/416417-vstrom-sale.html @Flyinfool ??????? Am thinking of you??? Stinks getting old,,, cant remember nuttin no more...

Chief and Sky,,, I too would like to thank you both for your service in the fight to maintain our way of life too!!!:usa: As a reminder,,, our club tends to be very patriotic (IMHO) at heart and the Boss has kindly provided our membership with those really cool honor badges for those who have served and,, speaking solely as a non Military or public servant member,, I REALLY appreciate those who have served and step forward to claim their earned honor badge cause it lets us folks outside of you special "Band of Brothers" easily identify each of you.. Probably sounds selfish but some of us,, myself included, really mean it when we say "thank you for your service" and feel bad if/when we miss the opportunity to acknowledge someone who deserves that respect/honor... I hope that all came out in words like I meant it too. Dont mean to offend anyone in any way concerning the matter.. Puc

cowpuc replied to owens.jeremyh's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Yep,, I am with DanL' on that... Now if you start foolin with the OEM airbox/air filter arrangement along with those open pipes then yea,,, your gonna wanna take a close look at the jetting too but,,, only uncorkin the pipes - should be good to go.. Small word of advice,,, ya might wanna hang on to your OEM pipes too cause listening to the mighty V-4 sing thru open pipes can get a little tiring if touring... I made a set of drag pipes one time for one of my 1st Gens out of thin wall chain link fence posts, welded on a set of make shift shark fins on em - WOW DID THEY SOUND GREAT and no problem with jetting (bike ran out past 250k) but, a cross country tour with those pups on there taught me how tiring the drone tone of running open pipes could be.. Hang em on the man cave wall just in case...... -
I been sayin it,,,, I know of at least one of the 5 star Honda dealers down yonder who have already sold over 50 of the new Wings at just their shop.... Similar to the new Venture on our site,, there is a lot of going on over at the Wing site that I have been following since I heard the new Wing was coming from those who are on the new one and those who think Honda went the wrong way by not staying more in line with the full blown heavy weight touring bikes (the very reason too that Rider Magazine did not allow the new Wing to join in the Titans of Touring shootout - Rider said they viewed the new Wing as a light weight now = a Sport Touring bike in league with the FJR, ST's or even CTX's) BUT,,,,, WOWZY - following the classifieds over there of folks who are selling out to grab a new Wing and reading how many have traded up at dealerships = definitely makes one wonder if Honda really has got a history making, game changing, turning the touring world upside down scoot on their hands... I got to set on one as it was being put together recently but (THAT VARMINT FOOL AND HIS BOOSTED W.W.W.) because of weather - have yet to ride one like we have the new Venture but gotta say,,, just from sitting on it and bouncing it between the knees = totally agree with you guys - DEFINITELY something really special right there!! Personally I think the Wing is the only new model that I have been exposed to that has earned thru major RnD - ground up changes and advancements the mid 20's and up price tag found on all of them - my opinion and mine alone.. I am witholding my call on the new Bsemer until I get a chance to that puppy too BUT,, and this is big one to me,,,, if those Germans went to all that amazing effort to build that Grand America full on GORGEOUS touring scoot (as seen in pictures only so far in my case) with an actual 160 horse and then did in fact stuff a unchangeable 101 mph speed limiter on (as rumored) so a even a Honda 600 scooter or a kid on an old EVO Hd will rip by it then,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, well,,,,, then Honda wins the only one worthy of the $$$$'s being asked IMHO.... Silv,, no idea why they wouldnt let you take a seat = maybe the bike(s) were all sold.. If you EVER get another chance to at least swing a leg over one, my money is you will be shocked at how light it is coming off the stand.. Truly,,,, felt almost dirt bikish to this ol varmint!!

1St Gen - That pesky tiny oil leak
cowpuc replied to videoarizona's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
,, Vaz could rent a vacuum pump and suck a bunch of Arizona heat in a big tank with wheels on it.. Hook that onto the bike and North by North East.... Avoiding the bottom of Lake Michigan and coming up the east lake shore of such (dont go near Flyinfool with that cargo - he will sneak up on it and drain it off so it cant be used) - make your way up the west side of Michigan while dispersing just enough of Arizona along the way to thaw things out.. Come into North Muskegon, find my Balloon on the members map and head my way.... I have a unloading spot just for cargo like you will be hauling PLUS = even though its to early for a regular Puc's MGnEM - I am sure I can scam up enough odds n ends to make it worth your while Vaz!!!!!!!!!!! Just suck up TONS of and head this way!!!!!!! We can check that oil leak once ya get here too but really,,,,,,,, Tweeksis don't mind sharing her litter box if needed...... -
solenoid 86 venture
cowpuc replied to cruiserlover's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Sooo,, looking at the schematic for your bike,,, if I were going to bench test that solenoid to see if it was any good I would attach the little blue and white wire to the ground terminal of the battery.. I would then run a jumper wire from the positive post on the battery and touch it momentarily to one of two large studs sticking up on the solenoid.. If nothing happened, I would try the other stud.. If nothing happened again I would touch that same positive jumper on the small nut where nothing is attached.. One of those three tests should pull the contacts in inside of the solenoid and you should hear a distinct "click" when it does. If the click happens when touching one of the large studs - that means that the solenoid is already wired correctly and that stud becomes the stud that you will attach the positive lead from the battery to.. If the solenoid will not engage when touching either of the studs with the positive jumper from the battery but does so when touching the little nut with nothing attached to it - then you will want to run a permenant jumper from that little nut up to one of the large studs - it will not matter which one of the large studs you use at that point BUT - which ever one you use will now be the large stud that you will have to attach the positive lead from your battery to and the other stud will become the stud you attach the lead going down to the starter to.. If non of the above tests work - the coil in the solenoid is kaput.. -

Star Venture Highway pegs
cowpuc replied to ZOEYDOG's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
I have a family member (brother) who lives out in California who also found the overwhelming need for highway pegs on the Venture and he/we came up with a possible short term solution (if your desperate) of just clamping a C-Clamp onto the floorboard to use as a make shift highway peg (we were kidding around but I told him I would actually do that before I surrendered my Iron Butt ride).. My brother ( @VentureFar ) is one who simply found he had to have the pegs to press against or face horrible back/neck/shoulder pain and ended up cutting an IronButt ride on the Venture short because of the need your talking about.. I am not sure but it seems like when that discussion was taking place a while back - someone mentioned adapting something already out there to the new bike.. No idea if that thought ever went full circle - maybe Neil or one of the other lop eared varmints who participated in that discussion will jump in here and comment to it... -
solenoid 86 venture
cowpuc replied to cruiserlover's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
OUTSTANDING!! @Prairiehammer is in the classroom - THANKS Kev for getting us on the straight and narrow here!! Cruise,, I think I may know exactly where your coming from when mentioning the diagram not showing the battery and being in hard to read black and white... You may be looking at a shop manual?? If that is so,,, take a look at some more pics below and see if this all jives and maybe even help some... When working thru the shop manual in electrical diagnostics, the manual pulls the over all schematic down to smaller pictures as shown in pics one and two below.. If I am correct and this is similar to what you are doing (it wont be exactly the same because, as Kev points out - the MK1's and 2's are totally different and I am working from a Mk1 manual), now look at pic three as I point to the tiny little symbol in that picture that does represent the battery and then pic 4 where I do the same with the even smaller pic... Now look in the back of your manual and see if you cant find a full blown fold out schematic attached at the very end of the manual like shown in pic 5?? Now look at the battery I am pointing to in that full blown schematic in pic 6.. Also,, note in pic 6 that the color code legend is included on the full fold out schematic = definitely useful too if your non guru like myself IMHO!! If you dont have a full blown fold out schematic in your manual as shown in pic 5, click on this link and it will take you to the PDF file of the schematic for your MK2 as posted in our clubs archives by our friend/club member Dingy (thanks @dingy!!): http://www.venturerider.org/wiring/86-87%20Yamaha%20Venture%20DS%20Wiring%20Diagram%20Rev%20D.pdf -
By the way brother,, I would LOVE to stop Tweeks in front of "Snake Gully" and camp there for a night = AWESOME and my kind of place!!! Gotta ask,,, in that lil camp you got set up,,,, is that sleeping quarter arrangement what Aussie Annies husband "Quickstep" was telling me about when he mentioned a "Swag"????
-
Having never owned/worked on a 2nd Gen I am probably the last person to listen to on this but,,,,,, maybe drop the oil out of it at an Auto parts store and try some 15/40 non energy conserving = like Rotella in it Dav,,,, might be surprised,,, might be worth a shot..

OUTSTANDING!!!!!! GORGEOUS PICS DAVIN!!! No idea what kind of tempts you riding in and/or what oil your running and/or how many miles on the oil but my 1st Gens will get sticky/notchy/stiff in the shifting if I let the oil get tired or if I am running to low of viscosity for the tempts.. I usually swap in some 20/50 weight when doing desert touring here in the States which helps A LOT... Could be also check and see if you have lost fluid in your clutch master.. If not but that fluid is dark from age or usage = maybe just stop and pick up some fluid and a small piece of clear fuel line - attach the line to the slave bleeder and bleed in some fresh fluid.. No air if your careful.... WOWZY WOW WOW WOW - GORGEOUS PICS!!!! Looks like a BLAST! Snowing like crazy here in Michigan right now - picked up another 6 inches just tonight... DEFINITELY not in OZ I tell ya!!!! Watch for gators and kangaroos out there!!!

solenoid 86 venture
cowpuc replied to cruiserlover's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Lets see if the following is of any assistance Cruise.. Keep in mind that this info is coming from limited electrical knowledge all based on the MK1's but I am pretty sure it should be/is applicable BUT - lets leave it open for correction by those in the know just in case... I am including a few pics here to help you in your valiant attempt to follow my folly - hope this all helps some way.. Neither of those two small wires leading to your solenoid are ground wires.. One of them, the red and white one I believe leads to a device that decides whether or not the starter system is ready to be energized - think its called the start circuit cut off... The Blue and White wire leads to your start button up by the throttle.. The wire harness has a small pig tail coming under the solenoid when the solenoid is attached to the left side of the battery box. That two wire (containing the Blue/White and Red/White wire) pig tail has a spade terminal attached that the two wires coming from the solenoid terminate into. Neither of those two wires small wires attach directly to the larger lugs on top of the solenoid but both of them (on the OEM solenoid) are soldered right below the area where those large lugs/studs protrude from the solenoid body. The blue/white wire is soldered below the battery side of the solenoid (meaning where the battery or + or input cable coming from the battery is attached to one of larger studs on top of the solenoid) and the red/white wire is soldered below the starter side of the solenoid (or the other larger stud where the cable leading down to the starter attaches).. Therefore, the only thing that should be attached to those larger lugs are the battery/high amp input lead and the high amp lead going down to the starter.. The way it works is when those two small wires leading to a coil inside of the solenoid have a current flow passing thru them - the coil inside the solenoid is excited/energized with 12vdc which pulls a set of high amp load contacts inside the solenoid together. Those high amp contacts have the battery lead attached on one side just waiting to send a current flow down to the starter via that other contact set so when they close - BINGO your starter gets hit with full amps 12vdc directly from the battery and over she rolls.. Make sense? In my pea brain, I really cant imagine that the coil inside of the, what sounds like a non OEM, solenoid you have purchased (I am pretty sure that Mom Yam would not send out a solenoid with bullet connectors instead of a terminal) is subject to polarity so it may not matter whether the blue/white and red/white on that solenoid you have are attached to the matching color combo on the pig tail (probably ok if they happen to be reversed) BUT = if it were mine I would hunt around under the battery box and find the pig tail I am showing in the pics and attach them up to the matching colors.. For sure - neither go up to be terminated (attached) below a large cable that is lugged up (attached) to the large studs on top of the solenoid (as shown with the rubber caps on them in the pics).. Still with me so far? Concerning the clutch switch - yep,, that sounds like the clutch switch... I dont have actual pics of the dismantled clutch master as I just shipped that off to a brother in need but I do have a shot of the switch I will share with you.. The switch, as shown in my hand, has a small flipper molded into the side of its body that holds it in place inside of the handle housing that it sets in.. Your clutch lever perch/housing should have a small hole in the face of it right below where the handle meets the perch where that switch slips into.. Its been a while since I had to check one for diagnostic purpose but I believe that it is a normally closed switch held open by the clutch lever when you let go of the lever.. If verifying that is important for what your trying to accomplish I would be happy to verify if one of the astute lop eared gear head varmints dont jump in here and verify one way or the other... Think that covers it,, hope you were able to follow some of this and it helps in a small way.. Puc Oh, yea,, pics... -
Which all leads me into yet another - sorry Or... Unc,, I just gotta ask!! 69 Chevelle??? Motor? Tranny? SS? Your one us and have lived by the code,,,,,, you know the routine = GIVE

I have a hunch that the extra billing has more to do with some Canuck leaving the door open up yonder and supplying @Flyinfool with sub freezing tempts for his evil white washing passion... It will be interesting to see what that lop eared varmints dues are after all this nonsense (getting POUNDED as I type = +4 more inches in the last 2 hours) is over as the last I heard,, the Boss had him doing time in the form of Double Probation.... Could get mighty interesting and expensive around here for some folks **** hoping all works out for you to make MD this year Ben... Tip and I got a lot going on too but are hoping and praying to make it and it would be great to see ya again brother!!!!

BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE UUUUUUUUUUUU TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT FUL:178:!!!!!!!!! That awesome Cowface is gonna be gorgeously spoiled rotten with that puppy on her back!!! GOOD CHOICE IMHO!!! :clap2::thumbsup: Tip,,,,, ride on Maggie??? Your not the first to ask that but definitely 1 of only 4 people who have.. I'll tell you about the first person who asked and my answer to him and I gotta feeling you will notice the answer from that.. The Oncologist walked into the exam room a few weeks after they cut the fist sized tumor from my abdomine and asked how we were doing as far as soreness and such.. They had to take some bladder, glands, prostrate and a couple inches of ureter in the process of that 1st surgery which left me peeing thru a straw into a bag along with other not so much fun things so the Dr. inquired how I was doing emotionally too.. My response was, of course: OK but,,, did you get it?? To that he said they wouldnt know for a while but that because of the type of Cancer we were dealing with (mass doubling in size every 90 days) it was a really really really good thing they did the work when they did... In response to that I went right for the open, honest truth and asked the Dr. if he thought it was "Bucketlist time".. The guy we were speaking to was/is a VERY straight shooter,, a DEFINITE warrior against the nasty enemy and very serious minded.. He looked right at me,, took a breath and said - no one lives for ever and with your other physical conditions (some earned,, some still have me wondering),,, new Pacemaker (heart dropping down into the 20 beats per minute) and all that too,,,, yea - I think I would if I were you get on with doing things I wanted to do... Tip looked at me and I looked at her and we both said at the same time: R1 time!!! The Dr asked what exactly that meant.. A short debriefing about how some of my body parts got into this mess in the first place (MX jumps on bikes like those of the early days that only had 2 1/2 inches of rear shock travel and those little 50 footers got obsorbed by the riders body) quickly led to the point of conversation where I disclosed that thru out my love/passion and ownership of cars and bikes I had always purposely stayed away from (but always wanted one) the seriousness of owning one of the top ten fastest production motorcycles in the world and that the teeny little 1000cc motored R1 was always at the top of my list though and Tip knew it.... He asked if I had ever ridden one and was quite amazed when I told him about racing open class on 500cc 2 stroke dirt bikes, riding wheelies from one span on the Mackinaw Bridge to the other, owning "Buell" sport bikes and other scoots that I had hot rodded (had a fairly quick built CB1100F) and of course playing with bikes like my V-4 Yams on the Bonneville but then I said = nope,, never ever even rode one and told him being responsible and raising my kids came first... He smiled,, looked at Tippy and asked just how fast a little 1000cc motorcycle (regurgitating my words cause I truly believe he had no clue) would go.. Tip pointed at me, smiled and said "ask him".. When I said I had read that 100 mph in first gear was the rumored (Maggie has seen 105 in 1st with me on her back - kind of funny now adays in looking at all these new touring scoots cause even the top of line, high end, 160 horse Beemer is speed limited to 101 mph and that little liter bike will put a whoopin on that thing in FIRST GEAR - I know, really not apples to apples and means nothing to most folks BUT still,, in FIRST GEAR ) and the under classified early models with no speed limiter on em like I was going hunting for were known to be able to bounce the rev limiter in 6th at +190 mph... With that said,,,, the Dr. shook his head, did a little thing while again looking at Tip and thats when he asked THE question Yam,,,,,, to which Tip and I, once again at the almost exactly at the same time said = AINT NO WAY,, AINT NO HOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Wayyyyy cool Or!!!!! Very very sorry to hear about the passing of your friend/mentor (condolences) but I am certain he is looking down from above with a knowing what you are about to do in his honor/memory brother = that scoot could not have ended up in better hands!!! This may sound corny but I gotta ask,,, is that model the one with the high/low sub tranny (be an extra shifter down there if it is)? I always loved those scoots,,, really good riders.. Regardless, your buddy had good taste - all the very best in getting er up, going and out CTFW again!!! Puc
-
Or bust the bead on the scoot, dump em in and refill with air.. I have been using the beads shown in the video below and they really dont like to go thru the valve but WOWZY do they do a nice job of balancing.. So well as a matter of fact that I am gonna try them in my R1.. You guys using beads like these?:

You betcha!!!! By the way,,, as tempting as it may be,,, I wouldN'T spend any of it on Hot Dogs brother = something tells me that our free Hot Dog future looks VERY promising :thumbsup::thumbsup: Wanna hear something WAYYY cool Drews? Last year Tip, Tweeksis and I stopped in Fremont Mi for one of our free Dogs on our way out to Sturgis.. One of our treasured "employees" noticed we were all tented up and asked where we were headed.. After telling em about what we were up to and giving the lady a big hug and a GIANT thank you for all the great parties and also for the little bags of Jerky we had munched on with their name on it while traveling in the past,,,,, she walked over and grabbed two great big handfuls of jerky and gave them to us to enjoy on the trip... Headed out with a tummy full of fresh 1/4 pound Hot Dogs and saddle bags topped off with Beef Jerky!!!!!!!!!!!

Years ago my nephew ordered and bought one of those cheapy little 40 dollar 380 semi automatic pocket guns. This was wayyy back when a person could walk into a gun show and walk out with 4 - Chinese 7.62x39 SKS's still covered in cosmoline and wrapped in that funny looking brown paper and 3 cases of that green boxed Chinese ammo whose bullets felt like they had wood under the copper jacket and were also highly corrosive as mentioned earlier by Fool I think - and not spend 500 bucks for all of it... So I walk into my Aunts house and find my nephew tinkering with the cute little cheapy 380 and notice he's somewhat reckless in his handling of the little shooter... Before I left I told em that he really needed to handle that little pea shooter with care cause those little barrels always seemed to be easy to find themselves pointing in the wrong direction = he grinned and said he would.. Couple days later my Aunt called and said my nephew was down at the ER with the tip of pointer finger missin.. Story has it he accidently snagged the trigger on something while he had the barrel covered with the tip of his finger:doh:... Later in life he joined the military, became a sniper and currently lives down in Texas where he is still an avid gun toter. Last time I saw him while in the middle of him beggin me to go down there and help him lead slap wild pigs I couldn't help but ask if he ever found the end of his pointer finger...

I think that is SOOOO COOL that the Head of Scoots for Yam actually called you - GOOD ON YA MOM YAM!! I also can not WAIT to see what that "surprise" is that they are including (if I read that correctly in that other thread)... One never ever knows what a company like Mom Yam is capable of when it comes to correcting a mistake - personally Joe,, I hope its something really really special!!!
