A new phase has begun!! Get Out And Ride with Tippy, Puc and Trooper!!!
cowpuc replied to cowpuc's topic in Watering Hole
Hi Brother!!!!!!!! We are back home now... Tips got a heart checkup next week,, I gotta Cardiologist appt. early next week, followed by a regular Dr. Appt the next, followed by an Oncologist appt the next week so we thought best to get our backsides back in Michigan for the month.. Don't stop fearing and/or hiding out though as I was confirming with my Grandson last night that the 3 of us are welcome to come back and visit him in California this winter (something we have never done,,, seeing Cali during our blustery, Wisconsin White Washer infested winter time) and as much as Trooper LOVED the heat down/out there = I spec we will drop down that way on our way over and back. Be honored to hook up,, get some in if we do David and meet the lop eared KIC varmint too if it all worked out!! Till then,,, keep your lop eared varmint head up, live in the sunshine and: Tip sends her love as she opens another package of that AWESOME Tea her friend from Arizona sent her = getting COLD here already!!! -
I totally get cha brother and in no way was doubting your adVenture with the engine (hope it didnt sound like I was,,, far be from me to judge anothers journey!! I apologize if I came across like that!) - it just caught me off guard hearing of a V-4 Yam actually gone kaput... Gotta admit though, I thought I did my 83 in a while back when we hit one of those ickspressway heat bump/jumps doing about 80 mph - landed it ok but it sounded like I took out a tranny in the process (constant kathumping happening internally).. Ended up being that I tweeked a u-joint fairly severely (actually cracked one of the journals that a u-joint bearing rides on).. I seriously thought Tweeksis was done as I,, similar to you other than I dont swap engines - I swap bikes, thought it was over but curiousity got the best of me so I decided she was at least worth a tear down as far as I could without pulling a motor just to see if I could see anything... Video shows what I discovered = 8 dollar u-joint and smooth as glass again (knock on wood - only got about 20 miles on it since I finished the job).. Maybe in the process of pulling the motor,, get the engine on a bench and get curious like I did you will remove a stator cover or something and discover its something simple... Ya never know... On the same token though,,, it will be interesting to hear what you come up with for a motor,,,,,,, as many bummer accidents that we hear about these days it seems like a good parts engine should not be to hard to find... Might not be a bad idea to drain your carbs and then refill the bowls with seafoam and then redrain them so they dont go south on ya while your looking for a motor. I think I would also seal off the air box so no mice can get in there and pee into the carbs and cause corrostion.. If I hear of any engines for sale I will gladly pass on the info!! Puc

I know it can/does/will happen to any/all internal combustion engine breeds at times but,,, being an odd sort of lop eared varmint who has been around some fairly over tortured, second gear missing, over revved, beat to death, oil covered high mileage Yamaha V-4's in both the Ventures and the V-Max's but I gotta say,,,,,,,,,,, I dont recall ever hearing of one that actually came unglued ,,,, 1st time for everything I reckon:Cartoon_397: At any rate it would be interesting to know too if an earlier Mk1/Mk2 engine would bolt up... I know a V-Max engine has different heads/pipe arrangement and the height that the intake with the V-Boost adds would also be an issue.. All the very best in finding a new engine and swapping it in our brother of wrench @ecornish !

Yes,,, I miss I Olivia more and more every day... If ya see er Beachbum PLEASE snap a pic or two for me and tell er I miss her BADLY!! THANKS!! Puc

Well what do you know!! That thing growing back there at our camping spot in the Mojave National Preserve wasn't even a cactus = come to find out and proven here in Joshua Tree National Park,,, that great big thing I was calling a "cactus" is/was actually a TREE - A JOSHUA TREE!!! THIS NATIONAL PARK IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!!! -
Years ago it was common to swap out tires on my MX bikes after each weekend of racing cause the tires would lose their edge and not hook up well (can be down right DANGEROUS when setting up for a jump!!).. A year end party at one of my sponsors revealed a HUGE sale on left over Dunlop 752's (MY FAVORITE MXin TIRE).. The dealership had 6 pallets of them that had been stored in their shop and were selling them at 10 bucks a pop = I grabbed 30 sets!! Next season I noticed that my KX500 had gotten into the nasty habit of not just dulling the edge of the knobs on a weekend of racing but had also now started actually tossing knobs!! Literally,,,,, the "knobbys" on those knobby tires were coming unglued (that's a opinion,,,,, thats what it looked like).. When I discovered this I got ahold of the Dunlop techs and inquired and was told that as rubber ages it hardens and looses its flexability and that was the cause of my tires loosing the knobs... The tech dude clearly stated that this "aging" does not happen just because of direct sunlight exposure BUT sunlight definitely will speed up the process... Cross over that story with the thought of being out there in the desert on a fully loaded scoot with passenger in tow and,, having the habit of really enjoying of wide open spaces,, no other persons for miles around and a "twitchy" right wrist and it shouldnt be hard to understand my following response to Sky's post above =AMEN BROTHER!!! AMEN!!!!

Freebird, Marcarl and/or to anyone else who can help with this... Couple months ago, before heading out on our emergency call to go see our new grandson,,, I ripped Tweeksis apart to install a new U-Joint.. Not wanting to pay the big $$ to Mom Yam, I ordered off the cross reference found here: https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?6238-U-Joint-Cross-Reference I could not find a supplier of the TRW 20128 (Datsun?) so I went with the Spicer 5-1500x,, that one came in and had no lock ring grooves but had the top clips = my 1st Gens have to use the lower clips = reordered the Moog (Precision) 392. I knew the 392's were greasable thru the caps but figured I would grease it - pull the zerk and plug the hole if I had to. Found out that the 392's and the 5-1500x (I see Spicer does make the 5-1500 with lower clips,, looks like I just got the top clipped ones by chance) are lower clip groove ground at 1.496 inches of yoke space (see "G1" on spec sheet found here: https://www.northerndrivetrain.com/product/SPI-5-1500X.html ).. 1.496 inch = 38mm and our/my 1st Gen yokes require 40mm clip to clip space.. I ended up shimming out to 40mm with washers on top of the cap journals to make the 392 work (took my calipers down to ACE hardware and purchased 4 - 1mm thick x 10mm in diameter stainless flat washers @10 cents each and used them as shims inside of the caps and on top of the journals).. Thankfully the cap diameters on both the 5-1500's and the 392's do spec exactly the same as the OEM! I have replaced many U-Joints thru the years and the "feel" of the finished product was good after pressing in the caps with the vice and have now got a few miles on Tweeks with this make shift u-joint in place.. The 392 was an 8 dollar part shipped to my door and, being a person who LOVES the challenge of making things work that normally would not work - I would do it all again the same way I did BUT = it might not be a bad idea for the clubs sake to have some form of a disclaimer placed in that tech article so if one of these lop eared varmints gets stranded and needs a quick fix,,, they will know what they are up against.. I know Don,, I am a royal pain in the neck and I hated to post this and cause ya more work but,, you know me Not sure how this all fits into the MK2 or the RSV's...... That knowledge will have to come from someone wayyyyyy more smarter than I .. Was just wondering if another update to that cross reference would not be wise? Puc

If you are as in-love with our Nations vintage highways as we are, just try to imagine how Tippy, Trooper and I felt when we discovered the name of the roadway that leads to Joshua Tree National Parks west entrance!!! I can't imagine anyone who enjoys touring in our gorgeous country, being via motorcycle, car, motor home or even bicycle would have any thing other than "AWESOME" to say about traveling good ol' Route 66 like the 3 of us did!! -
THANKS LOY!! Very well done!!! I took liberty to find you on youtube and it appears your channel/screen name there is Voyventures (in case anyone else goes looking for you so they can subscribe too).. Subscribed and gave you a good ol there to match the one I give you here!!!! All the VERY best in your project Loy!!! Sooooooooo much fun and wayyyy good info!! Puc

Thanks for catching that Roller!! Now that I know what it actually is,, would you mind going out and counting your Chain Binders? If you are missing one and have crossed the desert in or near Joshua Tree N.P. and may have dropped one out there I would be glad to return your errant, runaway Binder ... If you have never been there though,,,, we REALLY should try to set up a ride in that area = WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, talk about biking country!!!! -

Just like the numerous early model Yamaha Venture touring bikes Tip and I wore out treasure hunting all over America in days gone by,, Trooper shows off his ability to locate those hidden little treasures out there! -

It never ceases to amaze me what a person can learn about any given area at any given time just by stopping and exploring concrete monuments (I call em treasures of the road) and the like left standing on the roadways across this great land of ours!! This particular monument was nothing short of astounding when read with the endless harsh desert land sitting there in front of us!! It takes very little imagination when doing this to realize that we modern day travelers are still only one roadway away from a day and age when just staying alive here was a moment by moment struggle!! -

I have always been a desert rat and like my kids who rode on the back of many of our Ventures thru the years, Tip caught the love for it's untouched vastness and endless beauty from my borderline madness for the deserts endless beauty and harsh songs of loneliness. Perhaps that is why we both totally enjoyed the time spent exploring this gorgeous area known as The Mojave National Preserve so much.. There were many many miles of roadway during this night that produced "unpassable due to flooding" signs as Trooper worked thru the midnight hours in search of late night exploration fun and crossing opportunities that only places like this can produce. Thankfully Trooper's fuel tank of 10 gallon's of gas easily produces over 600 miles of run time (our record for one tank so far is 673 miles)!!!! As a matter of fact,,,, even running his AC (it runs off his Hybrid Battery) all night when it was time for him to become "TROOPER THE MICRO MOTOR HOME" was done with no fear at all!! We left the AC on all night and I noticed his fuel gauge had not dropped even one needles worth by the time rise n shine as shown in the vid was upon us!! Remarkable,, JUST REMARKABLE!!!!!! -

""""Rode PCH a many a mile back in the 70s on my Honda 350, and also in my 1971 Galaxie 500. Took the family out there in 2004 and 2005 and spent a couple more days driving it. Those times it was in a Ford Expedition one trip and a Lincoln Town Car the next, so not as much fun."""" OUTSTANDING BROTHER!!!!!! My first trip along that edge was in 78 aboard a Shovelhead Lowrider I won on a job site while tiggin tube for the Boilermakers! Been riding the west for a lot longer but that California trip in 78 was the beginning of a whole new horizon for those ol lop eared varmint!! Ya got me jealous Larry!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! """"Have I ever told you that I love your videos? :)"""" Awe,,, THANK YOU!!!! The kindness found in a brotherly is always appreciated my friend!!! Whats that I smell burnin??????? Speakin of cookin up another vid here,,,, I think another one just popped up!!!! -

I think Trooper has found his real calling in life as an explorer and treasure hunter. In this short video he leads Tippy and I around a treasure of a western gold rush town that his nose for adventure sniffed out!! Yes,, the towns boom days are long gone by and with less then 300 people keeping it alive, Ghost Townism is nipping at the cowboy towns heals BUT - WOWZY WOW WOW WOW - one gaze at the building architecture should give the viewers some understanding as to why a couple ol Cowpokes like Tip and I fell in love with this town even if it is stuck in days gone by!! -

As you know Jack, you bring up a subject that is very dear to our hearts.. Long story made short,,, I refused to let the new car dealership here in Muskegon "detail" Trooper and brought him home just the way he came off the ship because I wanted his original stickers right from his birth place in Korea.. Little by little and one by one those original stickers are coming down and landing in his treasure chest.. As you probably know,, we are gathering his future displaying technique as he hauls my tired old worn out body around the country and, like Tweeks,,,, he earns them.. Because he is brand new with a paint job and clear coat that was applied early in '18, we have been forewarned that it would probably be in his best interest to give the clear coat on his "Electric Blue" (it is a really cool Pearl color that changes colors in the sunlight) factory paint job a chance to cure before applying his stickers... Time frame suggested is 1 year. I am not to concerned with rust gathering (his hood and hatch are aluminum and the entire car has an 8 year no rust warranty) but I do think it best to hold off on applying his earned stickers... Make sense??
