  1. IMHO they could if the caliper is attached to the bracket and the pads are out far enough that they are keeping the caliper from sliding over the rotor while your trying to slide the bracket down to like it up with the axle... iWith the pistons compressed fully so the pads are wide open one should fairly easily be able to slide the caliper over the rotor while it is still attached to the bracket and then line up the bracket, slide the axle in and then put the forward bolt with the dowel end on it into the bracket... I can't speak for Duey but I got a gut feeling that that is what he was talking about..
  2. It can be done easily either way,, with the caliper still on the bracket or with it off.. For this discussin let's say the caliper is not on the bracket.. Make sure you have the wheel installed so the gear in the final drive is lined up with the drive gear on the wheel and that the wheel is setting all the way into the final drive. Now check to make sure that the spacer is in place that sets between the brake side wheel bearing and the caliper bracket - it will set level with the grease seal on the outside of the wheel bearing on the right side of the rear wheel (rotor side). That spacer will have a small shoulder on it = that goes toward the wheel bearing. The "Big End" of the caliper bracket goes flat against that spacer and there will be LOTS of sloppy room and room to move it into place = NO HAMMER NEEDED!! If your using a hammer something is wrong (IMHO). The small end of that bracket recieves the dowel end of the bracket bolt (it is not threaded) and simply supports the forward end of the bracket - allowing it to move.. So you end up with the bracket facing upward with the bolt holes for the caliper facing upward to capture the caliper.. Holding the big end of the bracket against the spacer, now you slip the washer/spacer that goes between the shouldered end of the axle between the inside shoulder of the swingarm and the outside edge of the bracket and slide the axle thru the washer then bracket then wheel bearing spacer and on thru the bearings and out the left side of the final drive (I like to smear a light film of grease on the axle before pushing it thru = I helped a guy stuck on the highway one time with a flat tire who did not believe in doing so and we had to destroy his axle to get it out of the bearings = a little smear would have helped A LOT IMHO). Now you torque the axle nut and the axle shoulder on the caliper side will capture the spacers/bearings/final drive and set it in correct spec. You will now see a space between the swing arm and the spacer/washer with some of the axle shoulder clearly visable = this is correct IMHO.. Final move is tightening down the pinch bolt on the end of the swingarm = 12mm bolt. Take a peek at this video of the brakes on my R1.. I know it's back yard mechanicing 101 but I do this with my Ventures when ever I spoon on new tires or swap in brake pads.. It really seems to keep the calipers functioning in my case.. When you finally got the caliper pistons cleaned up nice so they slide in effortlessly,, simply put the pads back in them while the pistons are bottomed and the caliper will slide over the rotor very easily.. Just line it up and slide it on, put the bolts in it - tighten em up and pump the pistons out...
  3. Tip and I are always in search of those special places where, after dropping the tent off the back of our 1983 Yamaha Venture motorcycle named "Tweeks" (see my other video's = named her that cause I was always tweekin on her to keep her motivating) in total darkness, we would wake up in the morning to that wonderful "we are not in Kansas anymore" feeling of the day.. We were very glad to learn that Trooper has inherited some of those same qualities and enjoy's the constant search for those types of opportunities. Touring and then camping here in Organ Pipe taught us all that not only is this place capable of providing that "we're not in Kansas anymore" feeling,, it is TRULY a land of enchantment!! The desert here is FULL of amazing plant and wildlife and endless beauty second to none!! When we finally did settle in to camp for the evening, we were treated with some amazing night sky's (complete with shooting stars) AND some very beautiful long distance viewing of the lights of Sonoyta Mexico!! GET OUT AND RIDE!!!
  4. Tip, Trooper and I send a great big ol NAHHHH NAHHHH DEEEEE BOOOOO BOOOOO right back at cha lop eared veins filled with ice, frosty loving varmint!!! We got a plan and a means now to escape the frozen tundra whilest you play with your white washer and now know of lands very near the sun where cactus's grow to 20 feet tall and :snow2::snow2: is NOT welcome:witch_brew::witch_brew::rasberry::rasberry:
  5. Dont know if this may help but attached is a video of @jakester and I checking out the car tire on his Wing.. I did a BUNCH of followup on this in hopes of doing some dark siding on my Mk1 1st Gen and that ended up showing simply not enough room. Not just the swing arm but the shape of the subframe just wont allow for darksiding.. I have never looked at the Mk2 close enough to see if darksiding is possible there but I have my doubts.. If I recall correctly, the 2nd Gen's have a 15 inch tire on the rear and am thinking the SVTC's have a 16 inch like the older 1st Gens so I am not sure how much comparing those two will help. If I am right in that,,, perhaps checking out a tire like Bill (jakester) has mounted for actual demintions?? Puc
  6. Right back at cha KICster!! We get headed back out that way and the planets all line back up so we can be at the same place in time and space = INDEED - an Arizonian hot dog rally would be in order ,, would love to meet up with you too brother!!! Concerning the Sasquatch thingy and covering both at one time,,, thinking you may have seen the video below.. If so and you would really like to actually cover both items at once you will have to come up to Michigan during our Wisconsin White Washer months to satisfy that goal BUT if you do,,, yeee beee warned :cold: ya lop eared "but it's a dry heat" varmint Just give me a heads up and I will get ahold of @Flyinfool and set things up!!
  7. Sadly I guess they had drunken driver issues wayyy back then too as a "Youtuber" answered the question presented in the video with: Tex Rider this officer was stoped on the side of the road and was rearended by a drunk driver Officer Louis's car burst into flames and both drivers died in the collesion. To which I replied: Puc Puc Thanks Tex for supplying the answer to that! I just told my wife about your comment here and she said thanks too. I know that happened many years ago but we still extend our condolences to all of Officer Louis's family for their great loss!!

  9. I am basically an old school gear head that loves modern day technology. I have been having a BLAST goofing around with our new Hyundai Ioniq that we named "Trooper" (from the front he looks like a miniature Michigan State Trooper's cruiser). While playing with Troopers regenerative braking out in the mountains of California recently and managing to keep the dash meter for those brakes off the very bottom (so I knew his hydraulic brakes were not suppose to have been engaging) after over 4 miles of down hill switch backs, I thought I would check the brake rotors for heat and see if Troopers creators had actually been successful in making "regenerative" braking a truly efficient way of scrubbing off speed!!! WOWZY WOW WOW WOW was I impressed!! GREAT JOB HYUNDAI!!!!!! This stuff is soooo much fun!!
  10. I know,,, I am goofy but gotta ask,,,, are we talking about those plastic covers that snap into the mounts on the swingarm bolts at the frame?????
  11. Yep Grub's,,, best be listening to that precious wife of yours. It sure seems like until a bike reveals it's true touring charactoristics and,, sort of like a good pair of riding boots,, answers the question of whether it "fits" or not,,, its just another bike... Once it proves itself though,, it becomes part of the family... By the way,,, Tip agree's with and totally concur's with your wifes perspective.. Roll forward to 6:20 in the vid below to hear her thoughts.. When you do,,,pay very special attention to her comment of comparing the seat comfort on the 2nd Gen to that of Tippy's vast experience on our tired old 1st Gens. Personally I put a lot of value on the passengers perspective because if they (wife/passenger) aint having fun and enjoying the miles going by - the whole trip tends to sour,,,,,, IMHO of course.. All the best in your endeavor in scoopin another 2nd Gen!!
  12. This little rest area near Yuma Arizona reveals many things.. For instance,, one of the things that has always been part of our travels is the tendency to get lost in time/space and rest area's like this always serve a Compass like purpose in making sure we are pointed in the direction and this Arizonian pause on the trail did that to perfection. There was really something wayyyy more special with this location though as the three of us discover and take a moment to reflect on a monument memorial erected in respect for one of Arizona's finest who had fallen in the line of duty!!
  13. Yepper roonie kabloonie - that shovelhead is definitely one of Olivia's relatives!! THANK YOU Beachy,,,, ya done made my day!!! That pic makes me wanna sing:
  14. x2!!! :clap2::thumbsup:
  15. Hi Brother!!!!!!!! We are back home now... Tips got a heart checkup next week,, I gotta Cardiologist appt. early next week, followed by a regular Dr. Appt the next, followed by an Oncologist appt the next week so we thought best to get our backsides back in Michigan for the month.. Don't stop fearing and/or hiding out though as I was confirming with my Grandson last night that the 3 of us are welcome to come back and visit him in California this winter (something we have never done,,, seeing Cali during our blustery, Wisconsin White Washer infested winter time) and as much as Trooper LOVED the heat down/out there = I spec we will drop down that way on our way over and back. Be honored to hook up,, get some in if we do David and meet the lop eared KIC varmint too if it all worked out!! Till then,,, keep your lop eared varmint head up, live in the sunshine and: Tip sends her love as she opens another package of that AWESOME Tea her friend from Arizona sent her = getting COLD here already!!!
  16. I totally get cha brother and in no way was doubting your adVenture with the engine (hope it didnt sound like I was,,, far be from me to judge anothers journey!! I apologize if I came across like that!) - it just caught me off guard hearing of a V-4 Yam actually gone kaput... Gotta admit though, I thought I did my 83 in a while back when we hit one of those ickspressway heat bump/jumps doing about 80 mph - landed it ok but it sounded like I took out a tranny in the process (constant kathumping happening internally).. Ended up being that I tweeked a u-joint fairly severely (actually cracked one of the journals that a u-joint bearing rides on).. I seriously thought Tweeksis was done as I,, similar to you other than I dont swap engines - I swap bikes, thought it was over but curiousity got the best of me so I decided she was at least worth a tear down as far as I could without pulling a motor just to see if I could see anything... Video shows what I discovered = 8 dollar u-joint and smooth as glass again (knock on wood - only got about 20 miles on it since I finished the job).. Maybe in the process of pulling the motor,, get the engine on a bench and get curious like I did you will remove a stator cover or something and discover its something simple... Ya never know... On the same token though,,, it will be interesting to hear what you come up with for a motor,,,,,,, as many bummer accidents that we hear about these days it seems like a good parts engine should not be to hard to find... Might not be a bad idea to drain your carbs and then refill the bowls with seafoam and then redrain them so they dont go south on ya while your looking for a motor. I think I would also seal off the air box so no mice can get in there and pee into the carbs and cause corrostion.. If I hear of any engines for sale I will gladly pass on the info!! Puc
  17. I know it can/does/will happen to any/all internal combustion engine breeds at times but,,, being an odd sort of lop eared varmint who has been around some fairly over tortured, second gear missing, over revved, beat to death, oil covered high mileage Yamaha V-4's in both the Ventures and the V-Max's but I gotta say,,,,,,,,,,, I dont recall ever hearing of one that actually came unglued ,,,, 1st time for everything I reckon:Cartoon_397: At any rate it would be interesting to know too if an earlier Mk1/Mk2 engine would bolt up... I know a V-Max engine has different heads/pipe arrangement and the height that the intake with the V-Boost adds would also be an issue.. All the very best in finding a new engine and swapping it in our brother of wrench @ecornish !
  18. Yes,,, I miss I Olivia more and more every day... If ya see er Beachbum PLEASE snap a pic or two for me and tell er I miss her BADLY!! THANKS!! Puc
  19. Thanks Carl,,, a finer lop eared brother of a Canuckian Moderator varmint I have never met!!
  20. I know Roller,,,, it's a flaw in my already flawed charachter ... It is nice to be loved in spite of it all though !!!!
  21. Well what do you know!! That thing growing back there at our camping spot in the Mojave National Preserve wasn't even a cactus = come to find out and proven here in Joshua Tree National Park,,, that great big thing I was calling a "cactus" is/was actually a TREE - A JOSHUA TREE!!! THIS NATIONAL PARK IS A BEAUTIFUL PLACE!!!
  22. Years ago it was common to swap out tires on my MX bikes after each weekend of racing cause the tires would lose their edge and not hook up well (can be down right DANGEROUS when setting up for a jump!!).. A year end party at one of my sponsors revealed a HUGE sale on left over Dunlop 752's (MY FAVORITE MXin TIRE).. The dealership had 6 pallets of them that had been stored in their shop and were selling them at 10 bucks a pop = I grabbed 30 sets!! Next season I noticed that my KX500 had gotten into the nasty habit of not just dulling the edge of the knobs on a weekend of racing but had also now started actually tossing knobs!! Literally,,,,, the "knobbys" on those knobby tires were coming unglued (that's a opinion,,,,, thats what it looked like).. When I discovered this I got ahold of the Dunlop techs and inquired and was told that as rubber ages it hardens and looses its flexability and that was the cause of my tires loosing the knobs... The tech dude clearly stated that this "aging" does not happen just because of direct sunlight exposure BUT sunlight definitely will speed up the process... Cross over that story with the thought of being out there in the desert on a fully loaded scoot with passenger in tow and,, having the habit of really enjoying of wide open spaces,, no other persons for miles around and a "twitchy" right wrist and it shouldnt be hard to understand my following response to Sky's post above =AMEN BROTHER!!! AMEN!!!!
  23. Freebird, Marcarl and/or to anyone else who can help with this... Couple months ago, before heading out on our emergency call to go see our new grandson,,, I ripped Tweeksis apart to install a new U-Joint.. Not wanting to pay the big $$ to Mom Yam, I ordered off the cross reference found here: https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?6238-U-Joint-Cross-Reference I could not find a supplier of the TRW 20128 (Datsun?) so I went with the Spicer 5-1500x,, that one came in and had no lock ring grooves but had the top clips = my 1st Gens have to use the lower clips = reordered the Moog (Precision) 392. I knew the 392's were greasable thru the caps but figured I would grease it - pull the zerk and plug the hole if I had to. Found out that the 392's and the 5-1500x (I see Spicer does make the 5-1500 with lower clips,, looks like I just got the top clipped ones by chance) are lower clip groove ground at 1.496 inches of yoke space (see "G1" on spec sheet found here: https://www.northerndrivetrain.com/product/SPI-5-1500X.html ).. 1.496 inch = 38mm and our/my 1st Gen yokes require 40mm clip to clip space.. I ended up shimming out to 40mm with washers on top of the cap journals to make the 392 work (took my calipers down to ACE hardware and purchased 4 - 1mm thick x 10mm in diameter stainless flat washers @10 cents each and used them as shims inside of the caps and on top of the journals).. Thankfully the cap diameters on both the 5-1500's and the 392's do spec exactly the same as the OEM! I have replaced many U-Joints thru the years and the "feel" of the finished product was good after pressing in the caps with the vice and have now got a few miles on Tweeks with this make shift u-joint in place.. The 392 was an 8 dollar part shipped to my door and, being a person who LOVES the challenge of making things work that normally would not work - I would do it all again the same way I did BUT = it might not be a bad idea for the clubs sake to have some form of a disclaimer placed in that tech article so if one of these lop eared varmints gets stranded and needs a quick fix,,, they will know what they are up against.. I know Don,, I am a royal pain in the neck and I hated to post this and cause ya more work but,, you know me Not sure how this all fits into the MK2 or the RSV's...... That knowledge will have to come from someone wayyyyyy more smarter than I .. Was just wondering if another update to that cross reference would not be wise? Puc
  24. If you are as in-love with our Nations vintage highways as we are, just try to imagine how Tippy, Trooper and I felt when we discovered the name of the roadway that leads to Joshua Tree National Parks west entrance!!! I can't imagine anyone who enjoys touring in our gorgeous country, being via motorcycle, car, motor home or even bicycle would have any thing other than "AWESOME" to say about traveling good ol' Route 66 like the 3 of us did!!
