10mm socket,,, when it gets right down to it, bikes from the land of the rising sun rise and fall on a 10mm socket so I am guessing 10mm socket!!!

Thoughts on buying a brand new, 10 year old bike
cowpuc replied to Chaharly's topic in Watering Hole
Wassup Cha?? See ur talkin bikes,,, I LOVE talkin bikes:178: = thanks for yankin my chain brother:happy34:!! Here in Michigan, Indiana and as far as I know = Ohio still, where I have done a fair amount of new bike wheeling/dealing I know that the new bike dealership receives the bike with a Certificate of Origin and a "title" is not issued until the bike is sold. Once a title is issued, the factory warranty begins and, regardless of whether or not the bike is even ridden - it is now considered a "used" scoot. I have a gut feeling that you will find this applies country wide as I have always been under the idea that the above is a Federal thingy (was in the business for many years and never heard different BUT,, consider the source = me LOL). That said, if the bike is actually NEW as stated, you would get a full 1 year (Yamaha's Warranty at the time?) factory warranty and an "A" title at purchase - pretty cool:beer:. I think if I were looking at it, as well as finding out whether it was actually NEW, I would also need to know if the bike was ever "prepped". If it is new there is a good chance it has never been prepped and therefore, the engine has not been rolled over or started since it's arrival at the dealership. This is where experience has taught me about the "dry spots" you may be mentioning. Having dealt with numerous abandoned or, as you and I would put it, unloved motorcycles over the years, I have indeed encountered on more than one occasion, bearing surfaces that have dried out from time and - if not prelubed BEFORE any attempt at actual starting = at minimum, rust spots on bearing surfaces cause failure a few thou down the road and at the maximum - instant galling can happen causing an otherwise good journal grind to go into full failure within minutes of start up. Knowing just a little about the "Roady" motor, I am almost positive they are non-roller/needle bearing big ends on the rods and if so, they are the type of bearing journal surface that would be easily galled if gone dry - as an example of what I am talking about. As you can be assured, there are countless other types of bearings throughout the tranny/engine where any form of rust/pitting having formed on rollers/balls and/or the surfaces they roll on from sitting would definitely not be your friend. IMHO, 10,500 is wayyyy out there in no mans land for a 10 year old machine that MSRP'd for 12 and, seriously,,, probably why the bike has sat there for 10 years . I would have to really really want the bike and KNOW that I wanted to ride it for a good while to even offer them 8 due to instant depreciation. That 1700 was used in a lot of the Star bikes and I have seen them setting around for sale (used of course) for 2 and under. DEFINITELY 3500 bucks should land a really decent scoot. I was stupid, not feeling well and all that and passed up a 2 year old Raider (113 inch) with under 3k miles on it for 4000 bucks last summer ( GORGEOUS) - they are out there!! Also, new left over bikes are EVERYWHERE, the market has been really soft for a couple years now and they are stacking up!! If you really want to play it safe, IMHO, stay within the 3 or 4 year max range when shopping left overs. Remember that a lot of left overs sit in warehouses stacked up in crates they were shipped in. Most of those dwellings are not climate controlled and temp changes does strange stuff - especially in climates where there is moisture in the air. Consider that not all engines fall to compression or power stroke so the valves land closed when placed in those crates so, at a minimum, some valves are left open so ambient air has access toooo - see where I am going here? Then consider the 4 valve head we are talking about (I am almost sure the Warrior had 4 valve set up like the Strats/Raider/SVTC 113 as shown in my video below). More valves is more fun usually but not necessarily for long term storage.. Getting long winded, sorry bout that,,, it was fun though and GREAT to hear from you!! Your Friend and brother of the wrench - Puc:15_8_211[1]: -
That @Flyinfool has a point @Sylvester!! Hold on,,, oh yeahh,, here ya go,,, pay attention Sly - ol Pucs about to sing ya song,, I mean play ya a video

No new Star ventures for 2019
cowpuc replied to ZOEYDOG's topic in Star Venture and Eluder Tech Talk ( '18 - Present)
Coming from Yamaha of Canada that sounds kind of strange as the reports from our Canuckian Land brothers all reported a complete early sell out up there. I remember one person reporting that he had gotten the last 2018 SVTC available in Canada and, if memory serves, that was way back in December of last year - no idea about Eluders but I am almost positive the SVTC was a complete sell out up there.. It seems like the last thing Mom Yam would do is stop production on a bike with that much demand up there. Now if that announcement were U.S. related, and judging by the lack of sales and discounts we have seen here in our area on left overs, then, yeah,, I could see it.. Our local dealership has still not sold either 1 of either one. On the same token though, I do feel somewhat compelled to share some personal opinion. Some of you may remember this thread: https://www.venturerider.org/forum/showthread.php?102280-Let-the-discussion-begin&highlight=make+mine+fastest? In that thread back in 2015 we/I shared my own personal opinionated thoughts concerning what I would like to see in the new bike which, in fact, lined up with numerous Venture Riders ideas. In my case, those "wishes" have never resided and I still hold the opinion that had Mom Yam produced such a high performing, magic between the bars machine as we described - the sales (if that is what is holding back the '19's and/or there is any truth to the 19's being held back) in the U.S. would definitely show more competitive in the U.S.. That said, Mom Yam,, I have no idea if you ever even read our forums any more but, if you do, please note. Even though, because of health issues, my long distance, tent camping motorcycle touring days are over and my wife and I have moved on into CTFW's of a +60 MPG Micro Motorhome for that endeavor, I would STILL be 100% interested in purchasing a +160 hp, +120 Ft/pd torque, water cooled, V-4 or more, shaft driven, touring bike. You could even use the current SVTC fairing arrangement - just take those non-functional lowers and put radiators behind them.. The only thing that I am going to add to my original wish list from '15 is going to be either NO electronic speed limiter and/or a simple way to turn it off. Please let it known if you are going to do this as I have local guys standing in line wanting to buy my early model R1 named Maggy which, as soon as that +160 MPH, 3rd gear front wheel lifting, 4th gear rear tire smoking 1700cc motored new Yamaha touring bike found me, it would be my last and only scoot I would need . Here is my wish list from '15 that still applies: I have been a Yamaha enthusiast for many many years and they have proven to me over and over again that they are TOPS!! Owned a couple early YZ monoshock MX bikes way back and they were AWESOME!! My little RD350 and RD250 (remains still in my basement) were giant killers - proving Yamaha's superiority in R&D!! My 73 XS650 beat across the country with me on its back several times, chopped it and rode it many more miles until sold. Bought a brand new 650 Special, AWESOME "cloned" mini Harley that saw the west too!! My faith in mother Yamaha has been proven 5 times over by my continual riding of the 1st Gen Ventures starting in 1987 until present day with my 83 that has almost 300k on it!! Fact is, folks at Yamaha, I AM READY FOR THE NEXT PHASE!! All that said, here is my feeble wish list: 1700cc V-4 "V-Max" motor.. Detune it if you must (just like before) but please,, dont do another V-Twin - got enough of em.. You guys can do it,, I KNOW YOU CAN!! Shaft drive! EFI with a tunable tuner - even if its an add on - please provide one so we can tune it!! LED lighting. Engine guarding and saddle bag guarding. Adjustable bars like on the first gen. Factory tank and windshield bags. Fixed Fairing. Get the same Doctors who advised you on constructing the seat of the 1st Gens (cant remember what you call those guys) to advise you on this one - my kids, wife and I LOVE what they did!! Keep the seat height difference between the rider and passenger no more than 3 inches (2 is great) - raising the passenger higher causes weight imbalance and makes slow speed riding harder. Ease of removal of the trunk(s) for changing rear tire. Center stand. Forward boards with normal foot pegs located rearward so standing up while riding is still possible, shift and brake levers at both locations (no heal toe please). Hand warmers. Key removable rear trunk and bags. Grease zerks on all main pivot points. High output stator even though it has LED's. Double check the gear sets in the tranny and make sure they ramp up solidly. Oversized clutch to insure NO slippage in high gears with xtra weight. 42 millimeter front fork tubes with progressive springs. Imbed reflective tape (or use reflective paint) in paint lines (like pin striping) so all profiles of bike light up when grazed by car lights. Add a large foot onto side stand - tired of bending over to pick up stand plate after parking on loose ground. Explore which tire sizes are the most common and build around those standards so tire choices and finding them are easy. Remember those long grips you used on the first gens? Use those, I love bending them back onto my knees. Enclose the motor well to keep ANY objectional heat off both riders BUT - use lots of venting with plenums to act as heaters when needed. Windshield it so the rear rider remains in the protective air pocket - functional vents in shield and fairing to adjust air movement if needed (hey,, could be asking for servo operated shield but I dont care for more things to go wrong). 6 speed Over drive tranny. Use GOOD solder, especially with ECU pins. QC the daylights out of it! DONT go cheap and trust the Chinese!! Dont short us on wire harness leads so wiring is tight - xtra 1/4 inch really helps!! Make fairing panels easy to remove but not so they fall off. Supply printable shop manual disc and printed well written owners manual. Supply GOOD factory tire pressure guage. Chrome is out for me, I LOVE dull stainless (like the pipes on the "New" V-Max),, matter of fact,, build mine with no rustable chrome and all dull stainless!! Intercom, CB and radio would be nice.. Keep the tape deck. OK, if you REALLY are reading this and you like what I am talking,, PLEASE make mine just a little faster in stock form than anyone elses.. Not that I would ever use the extra pazzaazz but I have buddies that I gotta compete with and just KNOWING I have the fastest one would be worth an extra grand to me I KNOW you can do it!! Keep the faith mother Yamaha - I AM!! Puc -
Funny thing,,,, I pressed submit on that last post and the guy on the radio said "expect snow to accummulate tonight" ... Dang,,, evil - mean and/or even ice cold blood rotten,, you ARE GOOD at what you do Fool!!

I have kids in Sacramento and even though they were many miles from that disaster, just breathing the air in their region was a killer. Many many thanks to your son for him taking the time to help. You did good in raising em my friend:thumbsup:!

My attempt in this game: Today I started to put the bike on the battery charger but who is using it, why @Marcarl of course! With Carl living near @saddlebum and that Bum leaving Canuckian lands national chest freezer door open and releasing all that cold air across all of North America and all those Spiders getting weak batteries in em anyway,, Carls machine was the first to need your battery charger @rbig1. Personally, I would not expect the charger to be returned none to soon though brother cause I heard that @FlyingFool took full advantage (would we expect anything less) of Bum's slipping memory machine and put that cold subzero Canuckian air to good use and managed to spread his evil ways clear down into the deep south where people like @Freebird, @VenturousRandy and even down to @slowrollwv land.. I therefore doubt that you asking your neighbor that infamous tool loan question of: what have you misplaced - is going to assist in you getting that charger returned. Bottom line, you may as well ask @videoarizona if he would ship you a loaner up from Pah Hoe Nix, where the sun still shines and the air is warm and batteries are still holding charge, as, I have heard rumors that asking for a new one for Christmas is a failing proposition as even Santy's Claws are not able to grip their way thru the slimy White Wash that Fool has developed!!! The End Did I win?

That came out FANTASTIC @leroy!! Got a cross country trip to the west coast and back on it and still looking like new actually! I checked it when we got home and it looked like no more than 1/32 of rubber loss . My health ended up costing us a lot of ride time this year and we ended up finishing out our travels (still not over for the season) with a new car we bought when we got home from out west (bought a new Hyundai Ionic that gets 60 mpg and we can sleep in it - long story but it is AWESOME fun!!) so it is probably going to take us a few years to actually see the carcass on it/find out how many miles its actually capable of but, INDEED,, that Super Tire is nothing short of SUPER!! I have no reason to doubt that Dunlops claim of 6x coast to coast on 1 tire is correct. *** My ONLY concern that I feel like I need to share here is that, at least from my experience with that dual compound E-4, they are NOT a side of the road, spoon off, spoon on tire. While very impressive wear and ride wise,, if you are one that does your own tire swappin and/or like to be self reliant on those spoons in case of an emergency,, FORGET IT with these!! The E-4 is, again = IMHO, is a tire machine ONLY tire.. Other than that,, WOWZY what a honkin honk of tire!!
-
:scared:WOWZY WOW WOW WOW,, talk about snail mailin the news thru Face Book!! That story is,,, lets see here,,, at least 2 years old if my recollect is correct ... A really good friend of mine named Matt Luna (use to be President of our local bike club - Muskegon Motorcycle Club, raced against him MANY times, road wheelies next to him many times, sold MANY bike parts to him over the years for building Custom hill climb bikes, ect ect.) is the shaved bald headed guy (Matt dont come by his shine naturally like I do ) who is taking Wayne the Veteran for the ride in the side car. When EVER we have something like this going on in our area, ESPECIALLY doings concerning Veterans - WE LOVE TO HONOR OUR VETS!!! - it turns into a HUGE outing and this one was definitely a big deal!! The spot that this was filmed is about 2 miles from our home, right in behind our local "Mr. Quicks" hamburger joint where us hardcore, real deal bikers hang out. Side note,, Matt is very familiar with our communities love for making wishes come true... His daughter had a rare form of Cancer and, thru the Make A Wish program, ended up becoming our "Princes For A Day" that involved taking over our cities main street where our annual 4 day mini Sturgis "Bike Week" is held and I happen to know for a fact that 95% of those people seen in that video attended her celebration too - I am almost positive that Wayne the Veteran was part of that celebration of life too because I am almost sure I remember seeing him there.. WOWZY Larry.. GOOD FIND BROTHER!! Made my day! THANKS! Puc

Engine noise possibly timing chain slap?
cowpuc replied to sleadhed's topic in Royal Star Venture Tech Talk ('99 - '13)
WHAT EARLY SAID - THEM WATER PUMP DRIVES AND PUMPS CAN RATTLE UP A STORM!! Lets see,, welllll,,, other than assisting @videoarizona (hey Vaz,, any thoughts on this one?) swap out a rear tire, I aint never had the honor of messing with a Gen 2 but, I have messed with trying to track down strange noises on 1st Gens a few times so thought I would toss my of opinion in here.. First off,, I live by and like the old isolate - isolate, when all else fails isolate routine.. That said, I think I would start the bike up and while sitting on it, lay it over from side to side and see if the sound comes and goes. Sometimes bearings cages can come loose and do a lot of rattling around and moving side to side will cause em to go quiet. Also, a loose clutch or stator bolt or a variety of things can alter in sound by doing this. Another thing you might try is seeing if pulling the clutch lever in and out changes the sound. Does dropping it in gear change it? I would pull the air breather and listen to the intakes and see if they sound normal. I would also make sure she's hitting on all four by spit checkin my pipes and probably toss the sync gauges on it and see how that looks. If none of the quick testing/isolating lead me on a fixit path (or at least a path that suggested the noise was not going to result in Tip and I walking miles and miles and leaving a busted bike behind ) and I was gonna end up yank covers to see what was inside,, I think I would start with the clutch cover, especially seeing how's you mention it having been updated. Loose clutch baskets and/or worn clutch bearings can cause a LOT of strange sounds and it is not uncommon for those strange, noisy clutch sounds to emminate from the area you are referencing. I think the next cover I would pull would be the Stator cover (I know,, sounds crazy right?) as any form of loose stuff in there can produce strange noises in other places besides the left side. I have never ever ever had or heard of timing chain issues with these motors.. I ran out a crank bearing in one of mine once and WOWZY did it get noisy but that was well after 200,000 miles of a hard, happy life. Personally, unless there is any history of running er low on oil,, I would be more inclined to think maybe balance shaft noise.. Maybe run the R's up real slowly and see if the noise changes (kind of like looking for big end rod noise) as the balance shaft bearings load and unload.. I know,, getting long winded again,, got a real problem with .. Hope ya get her figured out and it ends up being something simple like a loose clutch basket... -
1st Gen Tire Preference
cowpuc replied to Rick Butler's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ty,, that is EXACTLY the combo I am currently running on Tweeks.. E-4 Rear, Shink 230 Front work VERY well together from what I have found and IMHO. -
Good eye Deej,, 41 Chief basket case to be exact.. I will never forget the day I dragged it home,, my cousin was at the house when I pulled in with it, I was jumpin up and down yelling I GOT IT,, I GOT IT!! Tip was standing on the porch with a great big grin on her face,,, my cousin looked at me and said,,, "whats all the excitement, looks like a great big ol heap of scrap metal to me"
-
GOOD ON YA BRO!! I AINT TAKING DOWN MY POST THOUGH,, I PUT WAYYYY TO MUCH WORK IN IT FOR THAT NONSENSE

Why you ol lop eared Iron Butt Wing riding varmint brother of mine,,,, I am speechless and lost for words (I can see that great big smile of yours right now as you shake your head, look at that Feline brother of yours and say = PUC is NEVER lost for words ) I do TOTALLY understand the curves that life can throw at us but, still, being one who highly honors/respects/regards the friendships God has blessed me with = the Happy Trails song part of life is never easy for me. I do live by The Code though that requires me to dwell on the end of that old tune of life more than the beginning so = to that end Barry, I bid you, calm sea's, blue skies and wind at your back while out there CTFW's on lifes ocean and keep that great big lit till we meet again my brother! Come see us!! Your friend(s) Puc and Tip

Ya never know what you might find laying around in the Sporting Goods department at the local Grocery Store these days. Case in point is the really cool rifle scope I recently scored. Given, I am sure that it is not of the quality of a high end Redfield Wide Field Wide Angle like many of us grew up beating the brush of Northern Michigans deer woods with but, for 45 bucks, what da heck -what da hay, not a bad early Christmas present for a geezer to buy for himself!! Any of you lop eared lead tossin varmintsbody ever heard of, or tried, "BSA" scopes?
