  1. It's been long enough since I removed floorboards to pull mufflers and exhaust pipes from parts donor that I'd forgotten I left the shifter on the bike - and, of course, that side of the bike is nearly against the wall of the shed. I've reached my phone down between the wall and the bike in order to get a couple of shots of the shifter for you. Sorry if they're a bit confusing. I also took a couple of the floorboard carrier and floorboard with brake pedal attached after dragging it out into the middle of the floor. I -believe- this is a kit sold aftermarket by Yamaha. Unfortunately I'm not the first owner and have no knowledge. Trying upload again... 1. Wall (left) side snap of shifter 2. Floorboard Carrier and Brake Pedal 3. Parts Donor Hope this helps... Holler if I can snap close-ups of anything in order to give more detail. Shifter itself is just a bit hard to reach due to crap stored on the wall over it - basically I'm shooting blind. Very best of luck.
  2. I am in possession of a Heel/Toe shifter setup that came off my 89 parts donor. It's quite an elaborate assembly for footboards with a frame going under the engine to carry the boards and shifter assembly. I can snap a few pictures the next time I venture out to the shed... I'm not sure I want to sell it or put it on Blu... Having a picture of what you're looking for may be helpful, thought I.
  3. Nope. Next weekend... Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
  4. Got it sorted out with original to the bike linkages and new recycled shock. Had total of 4 shocks and linkages laying around or mounted. 3 linkages too high, only correct was original so it's back on bike and all is well. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
  5. . Various kid jobs. Baled hay, humped shingles onto roofs, cleaned boats. First hourly job was 2 weeks after 16th birthday and driver's license at restaurant 5 miles down the road from my house. Rode 1972 Bridgestone 175 Scrambler I got from my dad in exchange for tearing down a barn. I was the afternoon dishwasher and janitor after closing. Cannot remember rate of pay. Do vividly remember foggy night on the way home running my bike through a herd of deer crossing the road at nearly 60mph and then laughing about it. God, was I ever lucky. Joined USN before my 18th birthday and did 20 years. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
  6. Realized I never dropped the rest of the story. Bought aluminum jack from Harbor Freight. Listed $149 on clearance $69 and tax. Works great except lowering is a bit scary - takes a bit of pressure on the release pedal to make anything happen and then everything wants to happen at the same time. First time I lowered bike back to the floor scared me badly. I now have a friend help to steady the bike during the lowering process since I've got one foot off the floor on the release pedal. 😕 Overall, having no experience to judge the jack, I'll say it works but can't recommend it. 7. Ok. Reattached right bank choke linkage, pulled all plugs and inspected spark and condition of each. Golden gray all 4, none black and strong spark as well. Multimeter battery dead so didn't check cap resistance. Bike still has vibration / 3 cylinder "feel" and hesitates badly at low RPM parking maneuvers often nearly dumping us in the dirt. Choke link has eliminated (?) the popcorn exhaust noises under low acceleration at high RPM. No more "Oh My God" PowerBar behaviour when accelerating through 3500 RPM. Still get 1-3 backfires when deceleration rolls through 4500 RPM. Question: I have no idea if bike has ever had valve clearance adjusted... 63k miles. Would concensus be to have dealership adjust valves before ripping my carbs off and diddling with them? Manual tells to adjust valves before synching carbs... Your thoughts? Thanks! 8. I pulled the side cover this morning in preparation to pulling plugs for diagnosis and found the choke linkage for the right bank disconnected (picture>) (Doncha love learning about stuff the previous owner did?) I reconnected and then bent it very slightly so it'd stay where I put it. Then I took Blu out for test ride and... MUCH BETTER but still not the complete fix: - Low RPM still runs on mostly 3 cylinders and hesitates in idling parking lot maneuvers. - "Kicks in" much more smoothly without the popcorn noises in the exhaust at about 3200RPM - Still backfires under deceleration right at 4500RPM: Set your watch by it! I do NOT understand why not having choke on the right bank would make a difference in the way the bike runs WITH THE CHOKE OFF. The linkage "engages" the choke forcing a richer starting and warmup mix. With the linkage disconnected, the choke fails in the open or "disengaged" position and no vacuum or throttle condition should be able to pull it closed. What the Heck? Is there an idle enrichment circuit that's actuated by choke position? Yes, I'm a newbie. Yes, I need to read more about these bikes. Yes, I haven't dealt with carbs since Throttle Body Injection came out and not much even before that. I invite comments and I still plan to get into those plugs and see what's up with them... after I take a little ride... Too nice a day to twist wrenches. I've got all Winter (in Michigan) to do that nasty tear-down and repair stuff. Thanks!
  9. Thanks for the many leads. My progress so far (very little due to commitments) is I pulled air filter and shot combustible carb cleaner down each throat - same change on all 4 cylinders: RPM dropped. So I'm seriously considering my next move is to pull plugs and look at them, cap resistance and spark intensity. Eliminate or fix then tackle carbs... Again, thanks. Familiarity with these machines and opinion to save me time, effort and expense is exactly what I was looking for. Sent from my LG-V410 using Tapatalk

  11. Final word: Different geometry on 3 purchased replacement shocks & linkages. Bike VIN says 1989. Took bikes original shock and linkage apart, installed best of 3 used shocks into linkage and then into bike and got satisfaction. I honestly don't know if bike is 88 or 89 - possibly an 89 built with 88 frame?!!! Don't really care as it's now ridable and I'll never have another shock problem, not with 2 spares .
  12. 1989 XVZ13 63K Miles. Purchased 2 years ago and finally got suspension and other troubles sorted. I've been getting a few weekend close-to-home miles over last 2 months. 2-4 hour rides max. (I don't trust her yet). Bike has developed (or I just began to notice?) a low RPM miss. Under low throttle acceleration at about 3600RPM I hear popping from exhaust then, as RPM increases to around 4000, a 4th cylinder appears to engage and bike smooths out. Closing throttle from high RPM results in a backfiring fit as it slows through about 4500RPM - very predictable. At constant cruise any RPM bike vibrates and sounds like a 3 cylinder machine. At Wide Open Throttle, bike is "notchy" with moderate acceleration up to about 4000RPM then Oh My Dear God! It appears to discover the 4th cylinder and earns its reputation. It's producing 37MPG over the last 8 tanks of gas. Not right. Mucho Seafoam thru unit: ~10% of every 2nd tank has been miracle juice. Figure 8 tanks is enough to fix the "bad gas" scenario & do all the chemistry cleaning possible on the bike with Seafoam. Another solvent recommendation before fiddling with her guts? What should I be looking for, do, check, buy, etc.? A reference to a thread covering my problem is probably all you need to post - I simply can't whittle down my search enough to find the right / best one. I'd love to hear any advice that anyone has to give me - lord knows I'm not much of a mechanic: witness installing 3 used mono shocks all resulting in too high a ride height only to find the linkages that came with the replacement shocks were ALL different than the original. Pull original linkage off of blown shock, install new shock into old linkage and install onto bike and, Presto! FIXED! Arrrgh!
  13. That describes how I got to see Night Court. It was syndicated and shown after the 11 o'clock news so I watched it to unwind when I got home. Loved that silly show. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G870A using Tapatalk
  14. What bothers me is admission to Canada is free (other than bridge toll). Getting back into MY OWN COUNTRY cost $ for "Admin Fees"! Really? And here I thought Border Patrol was budgeted from taxpayers contributions, like mine. Ah well. Only in America.
  15. Thanks all - any more input is welcome. I figure to go shopping immediately following Christmas when all the sales go into full swing. I'll post my results and review once I acquire and engage the product. Keep your thoughts coming - I'm really really reading these posts as they arrive (Tapatalk for Android, donchaknow).
  16. Yeah - post-Christmas EVERYTHING at Sears seems to go to for about 70% of what it cost before Christmas. THANKS!
  17. Got a couple extra dinero and I've wanted a bike jack for awhile now. What's a good, cheap (mutually exclusive terms) bike jack? Any recommendations? I have an `89 XVR13 and I've read multiple threads on jacking the beast off the ground, etc. I can't seem to find any direct recommendations or references (other than "Harbor Freight") for a decent bike jack. I'm not a major wrench twister and the jack wouldn't get used much but I do have a couple of major items to fix on my Blu before she rides again and having her sitting on a jack will be far superior to getting my fat butt up and down off the cold garage floor... Harbor Freight has 3 (seemingly identical) "bike jacks" with PN's 61632, 60536 & 69995 - all for the low low price of $99.99. They also show PN 60636 with a different configuration and double the pricetag. All 4 are rated at 1,500lbs. Sears list model 34612 for ~$120 with same weight rating and featuring 3 locking positions. Any other links / recommendations / experience or leads would be appreciated.
  18. Brenner - your fairing mods are -exactly- what I've been contemplating. Please please PLEASE post pics on that part of your massage efforts. Thanks!

  21. When I reported aboard my first ship (USS Arthur W. Radford DD-968) I was told on my very first watch to wash the Chief's coffee cup, hanging on the coffee cup board. When I noted how dirty it was inside, I was told it was a tradition for the new guy to wash the cup and the division hadn't gotten anyone new in about a year - the Chief would really appreciate a clean cup. I asked why he didn't wash it himself (he, of course wasn't in the space when I asked) and was told it was a Navy ritual... Anyways, I washed the Chief's cup. He came back 45 minutes later, grabbed his cup and asked the space in general, very politely, who washed his cup, I stepped forward for credit. It wasn't the worst tongue-lashing I've ever got but it came close. My extra duty was to report at the end of EVERY watch (every 4 hours, besides my own 8-12 hours a day of trainee watches) and clean EVERYONE's coffee cup (except the Chief's) for the next week. Vengeance was his, to say the least.
  22. First non-running very dressed 89 XVZ $1,600 from relative. Second 89 XVZ $1,600 from Craigslist - it had wrong rear shock and was very near stock with scratches from low speed drop on right fairing edge.
  23. OK. Here's our story so far... I purchased a Blue 89 XVR (Call her "Blu") this Spring and actually got a few miles in on it despite having a 1200-series shock on it making it sit 2-3/4 inches too high with 0 air in it. Stiff ride and downslope of seat aggravated my back problems so I did very limited rides. Meanwhile, the original Red 89 XVR 1300 (Call her "River" - don't ask) sits in my shed with a few parts removed. It doesn't start due to blown headgasket and sitting for 4 (5?) years. It has a lot of "Goodies" on it like bag rails, lights, footboards, etc. Most importantly, it appears to still have a good shock - it holds air for weeks on end and is probably the original issue... and I need it for my Blu. I'm deliberately NOT posting this as a classified so the folks who helped me out when I first hit VentureRiders get first crack at her. I'll sell River for a negotiable amount on the condition that the buyer strip and return the shock and linkage within 90 days. I'll accept any working shock (I still have Blu's blown one and its linkage parts) for a 1300 instead of River's if your intention is to restore her. I'll help buyer load her on their trailer if we can get to my shed through mud and snow. I'll include ALL extra stuff I've got for the bike - ask via PM for full listing of my junkpile. I'll even pay for installation of the CORRECT shock and linkage on my Blu. Basically I'm looking for a mechanic and sweetening the deal with some "spare parts". I live in Gladwin Michigan if that helps you evaluate the "deal". Reply or holler via PM if you are interested or know somebody who might be... and THANKS for your HELP! I do love my Blu!
  24. 2 inches higher and definitely different geometry under there. Now I know. Thanks for input folks. I'll post again after I tear parts bike down, free the assembly the do same to ridable and install everything. Yuk. I'd rather be riding... Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk
