  1. Well, my maintenance chart says it is time to lube and adjust the steering head bearings, so I am about half way through. The good news: they were not dry. The bad news: I am doing this because I can't go fishing until I get a new starter solenoid for the boat.
  2. I don't think Brake Pad said she was from this site, only that she needs help.
  3. If you pull the front wheel and strap the center stand to the front engine guard you can lower the front onto the forks and get the rear off without removing the rear lights. I tried this on my second tire change and it made things a lot easier.
  4. When you do get it started, does moving the "choke" knob change the idle speed. If it won't go to fast idle, then the enricheners are not doing their job.
  5. I rode to work. Rode home. Another 110 miles on the odometer. Caged it today (110 heat index keeps us wimpy yankees in the AC).
  6. Yeah, the viscosity modifiers are an additive, and the additives are the first thing to break down in most oils. People say oil is oil, but the additives make all the difference in the world.
  7. I ended up mounting a couple of folding flag mounts on my saddlebag rails. I wanted them mounted on something that is not mounted to the plastic (like my trunk rack). They are not that high, but they won't cause any hairline cracks, either. They do fold out of the way if I need more access to the bags, although they have enough clearance for most stuff I load, since the first gens don't have hinges on the lids. They were $25 on ebay.
  8. Saw a 1st gen parked next to my cage when I came out of Fleet Farm in Menomonie, Wisconsin, yesterday afternoon. My wife talked to the owner when I was in the store. She was curious because it was the same blue (fastest color) as my 1990. Turns out it was an '89 with a local owner. He told her he wasn't a member, but has been on the website a few times, looking up tech tips and general information. Now the sad news. I did not get any pictures. I will not let this happen again. Please don't hurt me! I should have waited for the owner to come out and ask if I could snap a few. My wife did tell him he should join and make it to some of the rides. We'll see.
  9. There is a product called Vibra-Tite VC-6 that is not an anaerobic and is non-hardening. It is compatible with ABS and just about any plastic, since you put it on the screw and let it dry before assembly. Good stuff. Do a web search or try this link; https://www.vibra-tite.com/product-category/threadlockers/removable-reusable-threadlockers/
  10. Sunshine and upper 70's (maybe 80) for four days straight. Friday through Monday.
  11. My shipmates gave me the nickname Karaboo/caribou based on my last name (Karaba).
  12. Thank you Orlin and Sharon for another great weekend of riding your little slice of motorcycle heaven. I was totally lost most of the time, and loved every minute spent with this great group. Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
  13. There is a write-up in the Tech Library; the first gen section.
  14. My leather jacket has a mesh lining and 2 front zipper vents and 1 large rear zipper vent. I ride below freezing with the detachable thermal liner in place. When it get up to 90 degrees and beyond I open all the vents and direct the bike's air wings into my lap and I am comfortable as long as I don't have to sit still beyond the average stop light timing. I think the biggest advantage with a textile jacket would be weight and availability in lighter colors.
  15. Here in the north-woods almost every station has premium without ethanol. They get as many snowmobiles, atv's and boats as they do cars on weekends. I even had a station picked out on my way to work (55 miles) that carried regular 87 octane without ethanol. They changed brands, this spring, so I am back to using a little more Sea-Foam with the 10% ethanol.
  16. You have to turn the squelch to where it will receive, but only when there is a signal coming in. There is a pdf owner's manual on the site with good instructions.
  17. Put the whole shed on a turn-table and a door on both ends. Red Green could hook you up, I'm sure.
  18. We have a pool and a pond... Pond'd be good for you.
  19. Was it actually built by Lincoln (Abe)?
  20. That looks an awful lot like the welder my dad used. If he had a pine dowel he could weld the branches back on the tree. The biggest hurdle for those machines is using the right rods. They have to be in good shape, and it doesn't hurt to put them in an oven for a while before you use them. Have fun with it!
  21. Ol' Puc ain't nuthin' but a dog hound!
  22. Make sure you turn off the fuel petcock when not running. You don't want to flood the cylinder and get a hydro-lock when you turn it over. Don't forget the Seafoam.
  23. I think you forgot the decimal place. The manual shows 8.7 foot pounds. I can see why it snapped. Hope you can get it out.
  24. The bling covers are mounted using the caliper mounting bolts. Two bolts mount the calipers and the covers. The covers are not thick enough to weaken the mounting (the bolts still have plenty of engagement). So, you can't remove the covers without removing the caliper bolts. Kevin beat me to it!
  25. I would just check the bearings per the service manual and pack in some fresh moly grease. No need to change them if they aren't bad. 40k is not going to wear them out unless they have been abused.
