  1. If your RPM's increased with the gas cap off, maybe the vent line is plugged?
  2. Best wishes for a full recovery.
  3. Happy Thanksgiving everyone. My turkey is going in the oven in minutes. I just shot it yesterday, and boy was that grocery clerk upset with me!
  4. With great power comes great responsibility. (I heard that somewhere)
  5. Cowpuc would tell you to open a carb drain into a clean jar and cycle the pump a few times to see if the gas is getting to the carbs. If you get no gas, work your way back to the tank. Could be clogged filter, clogged screens on the petcock or deteriorated fuel lines. Good luck and keep us posted.
  6. In my neck of the woods we have to contend with ATV's sharing most roads that are not numbered or lettered. They do not have any safety equipment (turn signals, horns, mirrors) and only require a safety course for underage operation. They do not follow helmet laws, even for underage operators. They are supposed to stay as far off the roadway as possible, but you have to be aware that they can turn without warning. I don't mind ATV's for trail riding, since the road crossings are marked but some people use them as a substitute for their car when they lose their license.
  7. I need a couple of them on my desk at work. Then I can say "I built that myself" (well, assembled it, anyway).
  8. Save the wax for your zipper. If it gets on your nuts, you used too much.
  9. If my dash cam catches someone throwing stuff at me, they are going to jail!
  10. You probably should not start replacing stuff before you know exactly what is wrong. A battery that will not hold a load does not automatically mean you need a R/R or stator. Search for the charging system test sequence or download the e-version of the maintenance manual.
  11. We all scream.
  12. Could it be the key switch? I remember a lot of threads for 2nd gens covering faulty key switches.
  13. Sounds like moisture in the switch, or relay (if there is one). Spray away!

    Tire

I just replaced my E3's, front and back with the same. I had 16,250 miles on the last ones. They still had tread, but started to make noise in corners. I could have ignored it and gone to 20k. I need more miles to break them in. No more driving to work (110 miles a day) this year. Too many dear in the morning.
  15. This should be the link to the pdf manuals. From the Tech section. http://labs.trunkful.com/vrmanuals/index.cfm
  16. Tank vent? Try opening the gas cap to see if it is under vacuum the next time it shuts down.
  17. A friend of mine ran his model JD Harley (1922, I think) on the run 2 years ago. Made it from Daytona to Washington state. His bike isn't old enough for this years run. Only 1916 or older.
  18. Do you mean your cap bolts screwed off with no spring pressure (pre-load) behind them?
  19. I had the same issue shortly after I got my bike. The pins lost contact in the connector that straps to the false tank cover. I had to order a used replacement. I think I got it from a member, here. It has been working for 3 years.
  20. I figured it was time to replace the tires on Babe (the blue ox). My old set of Dunlop E3's ran for 16,250 miles, and still had plenty of usable tread left. I would have let them go until cold storage time, if it wasn't for the howling on the slightest lean. New Dunlop E3's are on order and wheels came off this morning. I was happy to see the grease from the last tire change was still hanging around on the splines and drive pins. I always ran my tires within 2psi of maximum pressure as listed on the sidewall, but I guess nothing lasts for ever. Front wasn't too bad, but it is getting replaced as a set. Rear one is pretty badly scalloped. Hope to be up and running for the long weekend.
  21. You still got at least 2 months of riding left in Wisconsin. 3 if you get heated grips and riding gear. I always take a personal day off to CTWF in no particular direction.
  22. I just bought new ones from Yamaha. I think I paid double the price of generic, but it still wasn't much.
  23. When I did my valve shim inspection I went with the 2nd gen gaskets. Much easier to keep them lined up on the installation. They were supplied by skydoc with the shim kit he sends around. No runs, no drips, no errors.
