Signed on to delayed entry senior year in '76. Got out of Navy in '83 and finished my B.S. in Manufacturing Engineering in '88. I had only one or two months of benefits left, since I also attended classes year round. Made a lot of great friends in the Vet's club at school.

Head removal in the frame?
Karaboo replied to rjsteiner01's topic in Royal Star and Royal Star Tour Deluxe Tech Talk
Did you check valve clearance? If you are too tight, you would see low compression. -
Hey FlyinFool, I remember those funnels, too. We used them to fill our fleet of snowmobiles from cand, back in the premix days. They did work darn good when you were trying to fill your sled up in a driving snow storm.

You got one of the rare dealers, alright! I am jealous. -
What are the OEM antenna connections?
Karaboo replied to Karaboo's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
I will go with the CP27 splitter, since it has the PL259 connector for the CB and the Motorola plug for the radio. I think I will stick with the single antenna, with a fold down mount. I use a half cover a lot at work. Thank you for the replies. -
I am looking at a Sierra replacement antenna and possibly a splitter, as well. Which splitter would work with the OEM CB? They have one with Motorola connections, and one with a PL259 for the CB. I have heard the Sierra splitter will give a little better performance than stock. The antenna is the one listed as the add on to the GL1200. It is fold-able, and looks a lot like the stock 1st gen unit. TIA for your help!

1990 Venture TCI Issues?
Karaboo replied to Brian Mc's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
My 1990 has the same hiccup at the same RPMs. The tach does not even twitch. I have just been doing my best to avoid cruising at 3100 RPMs. I will have to check out that connector and see what kind of shape it is in. Every other connector I have checked, so far, has been super clean, with only 30k on the clock. -
Do you ever pressure wash the bike? Car wash stall?

This is the back of my 1990. All of these lights were dealer add ons, except the ones mentioned above. All the twins (or mini twins) have LED bulbs, now.

I have about 5,000 miles on my set of Shinko tourmasters on a 1st gen and so far they are great. I don't know if they will make it pst 10,000, but for the $140 I paid for the pair, it seems a good deal. They have a good weight rating and are still handling road irregularities and rain better than I expected.

Who Makes These lights
Karaboo replied to cabreco's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
For LED bulbs, you can pick them up at O'Reilly's. I replaced all 22 of my red ones and the 6 amber ones in my front markers. -
I know they are not a popular brand, but I put a set of Shinko Tourmasters on my first gen and they are holding up well. They are running at max pressure stated on the sidewall, and handle great dry or wet. They are not fazed by tar snakes or seams and are running quiet so far. I only have about 5,000 miles on them, but the wear is not beginning to show yet. I would be happy with 12-15,000 life for the price of them. They ran me $140 for both, delivered to my door. I'll let the community know how they are towards the end of their life. I will be satisfied as long as there are no surprises. Ride on!

My last ride through Chicago on two wheels was shortly after I bought my '82 XS650. I was in the Navy in South Carolina and getting ready to become a civilian again. I had a nice three day trip to the north coast of Wisconsin, except for the butt clinching ride through the windy city. All the bypasses were under construction, so I had to go straight through. No Fear!

Gen I amp and speakers free for the asking
Karaboo replied to alfa4door's topic in GPS, Audio, Electronics
I am looking for the cable that clips to the false tank cover and connects to the drivers headset. Is there any chance that piece is laying around? Also, my handlebar controller needs a new face plate. My controller works, just missing the face. Will pay shipping of course. -
I bought the IS-33 this spring. Took the outer shield off for the summer. Love it so far. I may try denting the forehead area in a little. I get a little sore after 2 hours or more, but not that bad. I did make the speaker pockets a little bigger for the J&M set that come on my 1st Gen, but others may not have to. I also added a quick release for the chin strap. Would have liked to have a silver color, but black will do.

Unfortunately, a lot of the local stations have 10% ethanol in the lower grades. The only way to get "REAL" gas is to step up to premium (usually 91). I end up getting the premium for the lawn mowers, tiller, bikes and snowmobiles. Regular for the cars. There is one station only about 5 miles out of my way, near where I work that has regular 87 octane without the dreaded alcohol enhancements. I head that way quite often when I commute on the bike. Then there is always SEAFOAM!

For only the second time since I've owned my '90 VR I heard the fan come on. It sounded kinda loud, so I decided to investigate. I found the #4 plug wire with a big chunk missing. It must have been rubbing for a long time to chew through 50% of the wire and loom. This was the easiest fix I have done on this bike, so far. I was kinda surprised the cylinder was not missing. Nice to have a quiet fan, too.

Also, make sure the Local/Distant switch is set to DX (distant). Makes a difference.

Kevin, it's unbelievable how you came up with this information! I thought my lights were the originals, since I had the original order paperwork with the bike, and they look right (except for the KC soft covers). They do a good job of lighting up the sides, though, so I do want to keep them. I'll start a search with the information you provided and see what I come up with. In the meantime, they still work and will probalby stay covered most of the time during daylight hours. Thanks for all your help, and let me know if you end up finding an extra lens.

First warm day (above 40) since I got the bike home. Cleaned the front half, changed oil and filter, new Silverstar Ultra headlight bulb and new grommets for the side panels.
