Carb rebuilding time?
a1bummer replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
No flooding, puddles or irratic idle. I've synced the carbs already. Ran much better but still got sucky mileage. I'll check the rest that you mention when I'm able to put the brass monkey back out on the porch without freezing his ba**s off . What are the floats made of? Brass or composite? I don't think I've heard of ariplane dope before, what kind of side effects were there? Thanks, Bill -
I hate tailgaters too! I've stopped in the middle of the road and gotten out of my car to ask what the fudge their problem is. I could understand if I was going well below the posted speed limit. But I usually do about 8 over.

Noisy tach?
a1bummer replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Yup, moving, sitting still, doesn't matter. I hit the throttle and it makes noise. I would imagine there is a motor or something that spins the needle, (dunno, never had to take one apart), and that's where the problem is. It still works, but it's annoying on a quiet drive down the back roads. -
If I was to rebuild my carbs, is there anything I should be on the lookout for? A while back I was having troubles with it not running on all four. The issue came on all of the sudden. I ran some Seafoam through it, and after a while it came back. Everything appeared to be fine for quite some time. But then I noticed my mileage dropping. I was getting 38-40 mpg, but now I'm getting down to 32-35 mpg. I tried Seafoam again and it makes no difference. I've also changed the fuel filter, spark pllugs, plug wires, plug caps, synched the carbs, checked the diaphrams for holes and nothing has seemed to make a diff. I was having trouble with a bad stator about the same time and thought maybe a week charge (or lack of), may cause a week spark that might lead to a lack of a good fuel burn and have someting to do with poor mileage. I replaced the stator this fall. I didn't run more than two tanks or so through it since then. But it still seems to be getting the same crappy mileage as earlier. Anybody have any other ideas? Time for a rebuild? Won't be riding for a few more months up here in WI. so I have plenty of time to do it. Thanks, Bill

Anybody else ever have a problem with their tach making noise? At first I thought my speedo needed to be greased again. I greased the speedo and the noise was still there. It would come and go but not stay gone. Then I noticed that when I engaged the clutch when going down the road the noise stopped. I hit the throttle and it came back. Then I had a "DUH!" moment and realized it was the tach making the annoying noise.

Speedo groan clarification
a1bummer replied to Gearhead's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Ya, I did the greasing with speedo taken apart. For the cable and zerk, I just used the metal part of the cable that attached to the speedo and brazed the zerk to the end that was crimped onto the cable. It wasn't the best job, but it did the trick. I was gonna redo it later and do a post on it. -
They've raised a few questions for me. How does the speedometer work? How is the rear driven? Are they as stable as hubbed wheels? How does the front effect the steering?

I'll check that out, thanks. -
Speedo groan clarification

Ya, I thought it was a bit odd myself. When/if I figure out why it's doing it, I'll post another thread. -
The gear indicator on my 84 stopped working properly last summer. I checked all the wires coming from the transmission with my ohm meter and all are making a complete circuit. Now where is the doodad/gadget/thingamabob that I have to check to see if it's malfunctioning? I can't find it in my manual. Thanks, Bill

Speedo groan clarification

Just F.Y.I., I had problems with my speedometer also. I made a simple tool to get the grease into it. I took the end of an old speedometer cable and attached a zerk to it. Now with some pressure pushing the grease into the bushing I turned the piece that the cable spins with my thumb to help the grease get into the bushing. I greased it up good, but from time to time I would still hear that aggravating noise. It turned out it wasn't the speedometer making the noise again. It was the tachometer! I haven't taken it apart to lube yet. Anybody else had any problems with noisy tachs? -
I'd give it a try!

After spending a good deal of my summer trying to figure out why my VR wasn't charging, and now that the riding season is over, I finally got her to charge properly again. I should have gone with what my first gut instinct told me and replaced the stator right from the start. I went through a flow chart I found somewhere on here to try and figure out where the problem was before tearing into the engine. I had stripped it down to the frame and pulled all the wiring to check and clean all the connections. I cut out the connector and hardwired the stator to the rectifier. But according to everything in the flowchart, the stator and rectifier were both fine and the problem had to be somewhere in the wiring. I finally cut the connections between the stator and rectifier and tested the stator again. The stator was definately the problem. Unless I'm illiterate or something, nowhere in the flowchart did it tell me that I needed to disconnect anything before testing it. My gut was telling me to do one thing but the books and flowcharts seemed to be telling be something else. I've worked on cages all my life but seldomly ever on bikes, so I was trying to follow the books as closely as possible. I realize noe that I've got it fixed that of course I would get false reading with everything plugged in. The power from the battery would feed back through all the wires and give me the false readings. I guess the books and such took it for cranted that I would just know to unplug things first. But then there are alot of things you have to leave plugged in to get an accurate reading. How was I to know? So to make a long story short, unplug the stator and rectifier before you test them in order to get an accurate reading.

Question for all the electronic Gurus
a1bummer replied to dragerman's topic in Poor Man Tips and Fixes
Radioshack has gotten pretty lame these days as far as having stuff to built any kind of electronic projects. Try http://www.allelectronics.com/ or http://www.digikey.com/ if ya can't find it at Radioshack. -
Would you happen to have any pics of your setup? I've seen them there too, but I wasn't sure how they might look on my VR. Thanks, Bill

New motorcycle passenger bill introduced in Ontario ...
a1bummer replied to a topic in Watering Hole
Perhaps if they really need to pass a law like that, they should base it on something more realistic like height. Like all the carnivals, (you must be at least this tall to ride). The boy is 14 and is bigger and taller than I am. I'm 5'9", and he's been over 5 foot for at least a couple years now. while on the other hand, his Aunt is so short and petite that she almost has to use a booster seat in the car. LOL. Besides, there are helmets for kids, foot-pegs can be moved up if needed. We've made things safer for kids to ride in cars. The same thing can be done for motorcycles. Maybe not always as easily, but it can be done. How about just passing a law forcing people to just use common sense? -
Just out of curiosity... why that particular rear end? I mean what makes it better than the next? How hard mught it be to find parts for it when something fails?

light reflector
a1bummer replied to TxVenture's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Don't know if this info will help ya... but LED lighting is getting brighter and cheaper these days. There are some that should be brightrer and consume less power that stock bulbs. I beleive superbrightleds.com has some good deal on them. -
Stay away from Champion plugs. And by all means stay away from any fancy plugs with multiple or split ground electrodes. I've seen far to many holes burnt through pistons and many other costly problems due to them.

Using the Volt Meter

I don't have any "doornails", all I have are "doorscrews". As far as being dead though... If ya look down on the molecular or even the atomic level, heck, even the sub atomic level where the quarks and gluons (and dozens more) are, There is a lot of stuff going on in there. LOL! I just can't help myself sometimes. Sorry. -
I would've loved to have seen that in person.

to funny man! Aren't there restrictions about bringing wild animals across the border?

Just out of curiosity... what are the states with helmet laws? Lol. I don't make it out of WI very often so I haven't had a reason to really think about it. Never mind... I found a list here http://usff.com/hldl/frames/50state.html

Not sure what I want to do for sure with it yet. If I used a rear end out of a car to build a trike, it would be nice if a guy could find one that already had disc brakes and one that part would be readily available for. I was thinking something out of a small foreign subcompact or chevette or similar. I'm gonna have to do some digging to find out how heavy a Ford 7.5" rear is. I wonder how much weight will be hacked off narrowing it and converting it to disc brakes. Another thought was to find a small front wheel drive like a VW or the like with TDI and an automatic to meld to the rear of the bike. Years ago I had an 84 VW Rabbit w/diesel that got about 45 mpg. If I got rid of the cage holding it down, it should do even better. Another thought to the diesel was to run Bio-diesel through it. That would make it ecologically sound as well as economical. The other thought was to simply add a hack. Don't know if I'll ever be able to do any of it, but it is running through my head a lot. Any thoughts?
