Well after a couple hard starts on these cooler mornings at work, (low 40's this morning), I finally got around to ordering one of those DEKA ETX18L batteries you guys suggested. I got kind of hard on the current battery a few times last summer when the stator went out. I don't think it ever came back to its full potential. I did the battery cable upgrade earlier this summer and it helped. I'll see how well this battery works when it comes. I'll keep ya posted, Bill P.S. I think I have to do some carb adjustments/cleaning too. I'll just stick to the adjusting for now and do the rebuild this winter. I took off the YICS and put on some pipes I got off eBay, synced the carbs but forgot to adjust the screws.

Sweet! I would've put as close to the center of the dash as possible myself. But then the only accessory I still REALLY REALLY want for my scoot is Jessica Alba!

Why the Resister??
a1bummer replied to KarlS's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
What is the value of the resistor that is already inline from the factory? I could go out and take the cover off my bike, but I'm feeling a bit lazy. Bill Ok, I went out and looked. It's a 680 Ohm resistor. Mine tested out as 685 Ohm's, which well below the +/- 5% tolerance. My battery tested out with 12.22 volts and 4.08 volts at the probe. This is all with the lead acid battery in stock setup by the way. -
Thanks for the kudos. I plan on adding some bags and a highway bar to it for my better half. I'm gonna have to take her out and get her a better helmet and some other gear later. So how do you tell if it's an "XJ" or an "X"? I'm just assuming it is an XJ. I haven't found a lot of information so far on the net yet that tells me for sure what the difference is. There's nothing on the side covers like most bikes to indicate what it is. Here's a pic of the VIN sticker on the frame. There is an X all by itself in the middle of the VIN number, which leads me to think it may be the X. I just don't know! Bill Well I see now, according to http://www.motoverse.com/tools/vinDecoder.asp, it's an XJ700

Here are some pics of the better halves new scooter. Her birthday is next wee so we're calling it her b-day present. Now she needs to go through one of those rider courses you guys mention. It helps that she used to ride her brothers dirt bike when she was younger. I'll be taking it with her as well. It'll bring down my insurance %10. Plus we'll see what kind of bad habits I've learned over the years. I,m pretty sure I learn something new too. Probably something so obvious that it never crossed my mind. Then she won't have to partner up with a stranger either. Bill

Thanks, I was looking for that kind of stuff on the net last night. But I got tired and went to bed before I found anything good. Bill

Ok! We went to take a look at the bike and take it for a ride. It's an 86 Yamaha Maxim XJ700. We bought it and brought it home. Now we're both going to sign up for one of those cycle courses. I'll have pictures for ya later. Bill

Whoops! My bad! It's an 87. NOPE! I'm still wrong. His note says its an 85. I'll just have to go take a look at it for myself. LOL!

What do you suppose a 1985 Yamaha Maxim 750 in good condition, with 16000 plus miles on it would sell for? A coworker has one that he is selling. He's hoping to get $1000 for it. He's had it for 12 years and has taken real good care of it. Always has been garaged. What do you guys think would be a fair price? Thanks, Bill

Any of you guys have any picture of the home made stuff after they're finished? I'm just curious what it looks like after you've stitched the wiring in to the clothing. For myself, heated socks would be a big plus. Especially for my toes. thanks, Bill

Going with SS lines and the pads from Buckeye is my plan as well. I don't have a problem with the brakes on my MKI as they are. But an improvement never hurts.

MKII trunk brackets needed
a1bummer replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Well after a bit of searching on eBay, I found a few pictures of the different mounts. The mount for the 85 is definitely different than on my 83 & 84. But it won't work for the trunk I have. From the information I can find so far surfing the net, them 85's still have the same trunk as my 83 & 84. But a couple years ago I DID see another MKI with a MKII style trunk. I assumed they had just done what I'm trying to do. And I DID find a picture on the net of a MKI with a MKII style trunk. At least I'm assuming they were both MKI's. All the rest of the 85's I've been finding have the MKI style trunk. From what I can tell without holding both mounts in my hands, I just have to cut off the brackets I circled in red in the picture and cut off the brackets I circled in blue off of my spare MKI mount and weld them onto my MKII mount. Do you suppose it could be that simple? Thanks for the input thus far. Please keep it coming. Maybe someone can clarify the info I've been finding. Bill -
MKII trunk brackets needed
a1bummer replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Really? I did NOT know that. I learn something new just about every day on here. And that's alone is well worth the price of admission here. So just for the sake of clarification, the trunks on the 85's don't come off with the turn of a key like on my 84? And the trunks are the same on the 85 as they are on the 86-93? Thanks a ton, Bill -
I just got an MKII trunk delivered the other day. But I need the brackets that bolt the front of the trunk to the chrome mount. The ones I circled in red in the picture. Anybody have a couple they want to part with? I had also bought a mount assuming that it would be a simply bolt onto my MKI. But it doesn't. So I'm going to have to either modify the mount to fit my MKI, or modify the trunk to fit my MKI mount. The plus side to the later it that I might be able to take it on & off with a key like the MKI trunk. Who knows? Bill Oh ya! a couple of those pouches I circled in blue would be nice as well.

moving trunk back?????????
a1bummer replied to painterman67's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Gary, I like what you did to move the seat back, and how you filled the empty space between the seat and trunk. Its a nice clean look. Right now I'm in the process of trying to figure out hoe to put a MKII trunk on my MKI. Bill -
I just put some in mine last week and they didn't seem to add any vibration what so ever. It feels like a new bike now. I also added the CondorBrace while I was at it too. Nothing but smiles from me now. I got a copy of that file for future reference. Thanks. Bill

Well last year on a group ride, there was a $50 pot that would go to the first person to ride from one stop to the next naked, and... Well, this year they've changed the name of the ride to "Naked Biker Run", and guess who is the guest of honor. P.S. The annual ride is coming up this Saturday buy the way, in Durand, Wi. at noon starting at The Construction Zone Bar & Grill. A band and free food! P.S.S. I'll be keeping my clothes on this time. Out in public anyway.

Well I finally got some solid motor mounts, a "CondorBrace", and a new Metzler all put on. I also repacked the swing arm bearings, cleaned all the bushings and installed zerks in the rear suspension. I also bought a chin cowl from Alabamacameo and got it installed today after I wrapped the front header pipes with header wrap to help cut radiant heat. I also took out the Y.I.C.S. and I have no more popping or coughing going on. Then I got my carb synchronizer from the guy in the big brown truck, so I synced the carbs this evening. Hopefully I'll have some new to me pipes late this week or early next week. This thing feels like a whole new bike! Much better handling. The solid mounts didn't seem to add any sort of vibrations. It even sounds a bit quieter with the headers wrapped. This winter I'll be putting the original engine back in so it will be getting some new gears to avoid the second gear issue. I'll also be adding a higher output stator and a spin on oil filter adapter. I'll have to make sure the valves are adjusted good while its out as well. About the only thing I can think of that's left on my to do list is to make a header style collector similar to the ones made by Markspipes. Unless of course one pops up for a reasonable price either on eBay, Craigslist, or on here. Now I just have to find the time to give it a good/quick wash before the big ride in Durand, WI. this Saturday. The 12 hour night shift really doesn't help give a bunch of extra time on my hands. Well here a few pics of the chin cowl that I got from Alabamacameo installed. It's a bit different than the ones I've seen on all the other 1st gens. I think it looks a bit sportier. Thanks, Bill

There's something that will make my gas smell fruity??? I bet my other half would love to feed me some of that!

I'm assuming that they will fit anything with an H4 bulb? If so, count me in. I've never had to replace my headlight bulb as of yet so I wasn't sure what kind of bulb was in it. I had to run out and look in my spare goodies to find out as it doesn't tell what kind of bulb it is in the manual. Unless of course I'm not looking in the right place. Bill

MKII bags & trunk for my MKI
a1bummer replied to a1bummer's topic in Venture and Venture Royale Tech Talk ('83 - '93)
Thanks guys. Those thoughts have gone through my wee little brain. The thought of the price and then repainting what ever didn't match would up the price. I also figured that by that time I could spend a bit more and find one with all that stuff already on it. Bill -
OK, I just booked a small cabin for the 7th, 8th, and 9th. Anybody have any thoughts on meals and such? Kind of a potluck thing maybe on a couple of the nights? I have a meat market that I hit all the time that has great brats and stuff. I could also grab some breakfast sausage for breakfast and ground beef for burgers or what ever else came to mind. I just booked a small cabin that has no amenities or anything. So I guess I'll have to grab my tripod grill and my camp stove. Anything anybody else can think of for the weekend? See ya all there, Bill P.S. If anybody wants to get a hold of me, I can be reached at 612-353-9008.

Thanks for the input guys. I decided to side with KiteSquid on this one and get the Hg manometer. I found his thread earlier today and had some of the same thoughts as others. Thanks for that link again KiteSquid. The only thing is that I have to be careful not to dump out the Hg. The Hg never goes out of wack and won't stick. It's also compact and will store easier. Or so it looks anyway. The price was also a plus. I thought about the Carbtune. SyncPRO, and the gauges. I didn't like the idea of the rods that need to slide. They can get dirty and not work properly. The gauges were big and could get sticky from oxidation where the moving parts meet. Even as few as there may be. But the price wa good. Especially on eBay. The SyncPRO and the Carbstick were my best choices, but the Carbstick had the better price and was more compact and easier to store. Plus I'm not afraid of the Hg as I work in labs and know the dangers and how to handle it properly. At least I better anyway. Now that I said that, watch me make an ass of myself. Thanks, Bill
