Ya, I saw those as well. I can use a file on my old tips to make them like those tips and save a couple bucks and extend the useful life of them as well. I have a larger soldering iron and a large soldering gun for my larger projects, so this soldering station only gets used for my small electronics and the like. I had 3 tips for it when I got it. I figure that even with doing more stuff lately with it and only going through 3 tips in almost 20 years, the 4 I just got of ebay should last quite a few more years. I'm surprised this thing still works as well as it does after so long. It was made when things were built to last. Unlike things today. All to often things I buy these days don't work the way they're supposed to or simply don't last for more than a couple years. Not much longer than the warranty. It aslo seems as though almost everything only has a warranty of a year or less. I don't remember many things even having a warranty when I was a kid, and they practically lasted a lifetime in many cases. You wouldn't happen to have a link to the Weller site, would ya? Thanks, Bill

I have an old Ungar UTC-200 Soldering station that I've been trying ti find new tips for. I know Weller used to carry them but it appears that they have discontinued them. I've had this thing for almost 20 years and it still works great, but I don't want to have to go out and buy a new one just because I can't find tips. I found a seller on ebay that had some U9010 tips that I was looking for in specific. They have a very fine point on them for smaller work. I save the old ones and file them down to make them better suited for other specific jobs. I bought all he had while I still could. That came up to $15.96 for 4 tips and free shipping to boot. Now in contrast, I also found a used one that the joker wants $12.74, and $21.16 for shipping. Umm... lets see now... a brand new one for $3.99 w/free shipping, or a used one for $33.90? Now I believe in free enterprise and all, but I think this guy is just a predator waiting to take advantage of someone who might be a bit ignorant or naive. I'm not really sure why I posted this, I think it's just a reminder for all of us to watch out for the crooks lurking on ebay. Or maybe it's just because I'm bored. Bill

Ya, I don't like many of those quick fixes either. As they quite often end up costing more in the end in one way or another. I agree that the best way is probably to take it off and give the bead a good cleaning. I'm just a bit irritated that it's leaking at all seeing as how it has never had a problem before and I just had a new tire put on. That's when it started leaking. I should've taken it back to the stealership then. But I didn't have any time to take the wheel back off and take it back in between my work schedule and taking a couple trips. Then one thing lead to another and winter set in. Now I'm kind of doubting they will take care of the issue seeing as how much water has gone over the dam by now. LOL! Mailbox issue has been good, for now anyway. Apparently the front end loader that took care of the problem the last time belongs to a friend of one of the neighbors who own one of the mailboxes. We spoke to her yesterday morning after the the loader cleaned out her driveway and cleaned out in front of the boxes again to see who it was driving it. She said she had seen someone to taking care of the snow in front of them with a snowblower and shovel. But then it looked like they were starting to have troubles as the snow got deeper and wasn't able to get it done. We laughed and told her it was us. We asked how much it cost her to get the loader to clear the snow. She chuckled and said just a few beers when she runs into him at the bar. We said we would gladly contribute to that beer fund also. Mmmmm... Behold the power of beer! Thanks, Bill

What are some good ways to stop a pesky bead leak? It would be nice if I could do it without having to take the wheel off the bike. If I end up having to take it off, and I'm able to break the bead free from the rim, I just clean up the bead area and apply some bead sealer. I keep looking at the green stuff and the like that get put into the tires to seal leaks. But they appear to be intended for the tread area and not for bead leaks. Any ideas? Bill

WOW! And some people think it's ok to stop just motorcycles for safety reasons. LOL! I wonder how far he got before it suffered a complete axle meltdown. I wonder if he even knew it was there. Might have been somebodies idea of a practical joke. I'd be wondering what the he!! that noise was coming from my rear end. Still a bit funny though. Bill

This may help you a bit. I took out the the original stereo all together. I put in a car CD stereo. When I did it I used one of those marine stereo covers to protect it from the elements. In hindsight, I should've used one like in the first & middle pictures that has a lid that slides in and out of the way. But the local marine/motor sports steelership was out of them and wasn't going to be getting anymore of them in. They only had one like the one on the picture on the right. So that's the one I went with. It sealed out the weather pretty good but the lid just flips up and hits the handle bar and gets in the way. Another thought... My Wifey Poo got me a slick new cellphone that plays MP3's and has a FM tuner that seems to work pretty well. So I might just take out that CD stereo this spring and hook the phone to a small amp. to drive the new 4" speakers I got from Wally World for $24.99. They are VR3's. 100 watts/pair. Also if you happen to have a GPS that plays MP3's or just an MP3 player it would also work. A lot of MP3 players also have FM tuners in them as well. The tuners don't always come in so well. They use the headphones as antennas. I had the thought of somehow wiring the cycle antennae into the headphone wiring somehow to help with reception. But if all you wanna do is play MP3's, that won't be an issue. Bill

Cheap collector alternative

After seeing a set of headers that a buddy of mine built for his Ranger 4x4 with a 289 in it, I showed him a picture of the Akrapovic collector and he said he would help me out. Bill -

Last time I had talked to him, he quoted me $250. But that was a couple years ago or so already. Someone here had mentioned that they were up to $700 or so. Apparently he said he didn't care to make them anymore, or something to that effect. I guess that would be one way to get out of making them. Bill -

That does make more sense to me. It was taking me to long to find the firing order in my manual so I did a quick search on here. So the collector in the first picture would make more sense to me than the the collector in the picture on the right. I don't know who makes the first one, but I believe the second is from Mark's Pipes. -

Skydoc is on the right path here. But the pipes don't necessarily have to be the same length. But rather the same volume. You can achieve this by adjusting the diameter and/or length of the pipes. Being careful not to make the diameter of the pipes not so small that it becomes restrictive. What you want is to have the exhaust pulse of one cylinder to dump into the muffler right before the pulse of the next. This will help create a lower pressure in the exhaust pipe leading from the next firing cylinder. Thus helping to "pull" the exhaust gases out of that cylinder. But if you have two exhaust pulses meat in the muffler at the same time, it will create back pressure, and the exhaust will not "breathe" as well. Seeing as how the firing order on the 1st. gen is 1-3-4-2, I'm thinking it would be best if you connect 1 to 4 and 3 to 2 if you go with a 4 into 2 exhaust. So as that while one cylinder is on the compression stroke, the other is on the exhaust stroke. That being said you can also have one pipe be twice the volume of the next. Or any other ratio for that matter as long as both sides of the ratio are kept in whole numbers and not fractions. As in 1:1, 1:2, 1:3, 2:3, etc. and not 1.5:2, 2.25:3, etc.. But due to the way gases work it would work best to keep it as close to a 1:1 ratio as possible. If I have any of this wrong, please let me know so as that I can get the picture in my head correct. Thanks, Bill -
Ok, I think I've found a spin on adapter for the Maxim here, http://ootfab.webhop.net/xj/products/adapter.html Just in case anybody else is also interested in one. Bill

Ok, Just got off the phone with the local Yamaha dealer looking for an oil filter for my Maxim. I asked about synthetic oils and as suspected, they run $15 or so a qt. over there. He asked how many miles were on the bike and advised me against using a synthetic in either of my bikes. He went on to say that after that many miles, my clutches have already absorbed the conventional oil I have been using and that the synthetics would cause them to act erratically. He also mentioned several others who have had this issue then went back to conventional oil and the problem went away. But if I was to do a clutch change, then it would be perfectly fine to run with the synthetics. Anybody have any additional input on this? I would seem to me that if he was simply interested in making money, he would've wanted to sell me the $15/qt. oil and not even mention the issue. Thanks, Bill P.S. Is there a spin on oil filter adapter for an 86 Yamaha Maxim XJ700 out there?

I went through that a couple years ago with an Impala on CL. I felt something wrong with the rear end as soon as I got it on the road so I put it on the lift at a friends shop. Then I saw the damage from the apparent wreck or ditch it had been in. When I got back to the owners house, his Dad went off screaming and swearing at me for having been gone so long. It was only about 45-50 minutes! I tried telling him what was wrong with it and tried making an offer, but he wouldn't stop being belligerent long enough to listen to me. I then tried to contact CL about the obvious con job this guys was trying to pull, but CL wouldn't look into it. Bill

Ok Bryan, I be sure to grab plenty of burgers and brats from the meat market again. Maybe I'll grab some of their brat burger instead to make things a bit easier. Tell Lisa I'll have plenty sauerkraut, and plenty jalapenos for Ken. Mmmm... apple juice slushies! D'OH! Brain freeze! If I was dyslexic that could be Bryan freeze. Oh, wait, I am... Oh I got one. What does a dyslexic zombie say? Bryans! Bryans! What? No applause? Did I mention I also have ADHD? Bill

I've been feeling your pain since Wednesday. Had a temp. but went to work anyway. I had far to many sick days already. Went home early from work early and rested the rest of the day. Felt better Thursday morning. That is until later in the afternoon when my throat started feeling sore and my voice got rough. Friday morning I woke up to find that it went into my chest and was causing my second bought of bronchitis this year. Went to work again, this time full of DayQuil and anything else I could get a hold of. Which at least made the throat feel better. Called the doctor to have mt Rx refilled only to find out he's out until June. JUNE! And for being a larger than most in the area hospital, they only had one doctor available and no openings. Saturday morning come and it was worse, and to boot my hip gave out due to the DJD. So off to the urgent care unit of said hospital to feel belittled by the doctor when she asked why a 40 year old needed a cane. And even more belittlement when I said I have the these sinus infections/bronchitis issues 4-6 times a year for the past four or five years or so. Sunday I felt better. Today I still feel crappy but things are looking up. Ya know, you remind me... I picked up everything I need to make some more homemade ice cream the other day. Forget that DQ stuff! How about some peanut butter ice cream with butterfingers in it? Or some butter pecan? Crap! Now I just remembered I have to run to my Dad's tomorrow to try and get rid of his computers viruses! Guess I can't make my ice cream until this Friday. Bill

So is this Rotella T6 and or Mobil 4T safe for the wet clutch on a bike? I keep hearing of "friction inhibitors" in conventional "car" engine oils that get into the friction discs of a motorcycles clutch and eventually help cause the clutch to start slipping sooner. I used to always use car oil in my bikes throughout the years and have had no slippage. When I first got my VR it had some slippage issues. Then I found the rod in the clutch lever was in backwards and wasn't allowing all the pressure off of the clutch and causing the slipping. But I think I discovered the root cause of the issue to late, as the slipping eventually came back as I got used to the feel of the bike and started twisting the throttle a bit harder. Then I found this AWSOME site and did my research before replacing the clutch. That's when I first learned about the "friction inhibitors". I then was sure to use "motorcycle" specific oils on the VR ever since. Are they something fairly new to car engine oils? The Manual simply calls for SE 20W40 motor oil. Which the "SE" is now an obsolete term. I've been running the Yamalube 20W50 from the local Steelership since I bought the bike. So if anybody has any links to where I can buy the oil online and hopefully save a few bucks would also be helpful. I'll also be adding the spin-on filter adapter at the same time. Then I can use a better type filter than stock as well. Bill

Ok, thanks for the quick reply. I guess I should've been more specific. I meant for my 85 Venture Royale. I've already been using Mobile's synthetic in my other vehicles for years. My 99 Bonneville just turned over 222000 miles the other day and hasn't given me a lick of trouble and is still running strong and getting 26-29mpg. Just got done changing the oil in it and the daughters car today as a matter of fact. Bill

I have a topper on my 78 F100 to keep all the goodies contained. I still bungee some things down to keep them from rolling around. Quite some time ago my step-dad to be had a couple arcade machines that he kept at some of the local bars. One day he decided he was gonna take them to a new place. He put them both in the back of his pickup standing up-rite. I mentioned that we should tie them down, but he insisted they would be fine. Needless to say, he only had one left about a mile later down the road. Why is it grown ups think they know everything? Bill

I know, I know, another "oil" thread... Looking to use some synthetic oil this time around when I perform my oil change on the 85 this spring. What are the better brands to chose from? Which are the ones I should stay away from? Thanks, Bill

Just trying to think ahead a little. Would you guys and gals who joined us for the last one, and to anybody who would like to join in on all the fun for the next Leaf Looker Run, be interested in doing it on the first weekend of October? Last fall we did it on the second weekend and I kind of thought that we may have missed the peek a bit. Also, I have to work that weekend, If we can do it the first weekend than I only have to take off one day. Either way, I CAN"T WAIT! Apple orchards, VR members, and brats, OH MY! Thanks, Bill

I have mixed feelings about it all. On one hand I've seen plenty vehicles on the road that definitely shouldn't have been. I've been behind the wheel or handlebars of a couple of them myself. I've gotten older and now see the error of my ways. Well some of them anyway. I've seen vehicles that are so rusty that the springs are no longer attached. Others with such bad shocks that the vehicle never stops bouncing. Still others that are way over loaded by morbidly obese drivers and/or passengers. Like the Geo that my overweight brother and his over weight wife drove. These are just a few of the example I can think of that make me feel that random stops of vehicle, not just one mode of transportation or another, should take place and make people more aware of their and others mortality. Or at the very least, the LEO's should stop them and give them a quick once over and give them a fix it ticket if needed. Especially if it may indanger the lives of others who share the road with them. But then on the other hand, I feel as many others do. We, as Americans, have a certain inalienable right to travel freely without restriction. In other words, if they (LOE's/Government) don't have just/probable cause to pull me over, let me alone. Amendment 4 - Search and Seizure. Ratified 12/15/1791. The right of the people to be secure in their persons, houses, papers, and effects, against unreasonable searches and seizures, shall not be violated, and no Warrants shall issue, but upon probable cause, supported by Oath or affirmation, and particularly describing the place to be searched, and the persons or things to be seized. Thompson v. Smith, 154 SE 579. It could not be stated more directly or conclusively that citizens of the states have a common law right to travel, without approval or restriction (license), and that this right is protected under the U.S Constitution. CASE #3: "The right to travel is a part of the liberty of which the citizen cannot be deprived without due process of law under the Fifth Amendment." Kent v. Dulles, 357 US 116, 125. Ya! this is the kind of input I was looking for. Unfortunately it's still illegal here in W., but I'm gonna bring it up at my next doctor visit just the same. Now I wonder how legal it would be if I was to go to a neighboring state that has legalized medical marijuana and obtain it. But then could I bring it into WI. without getting trouble? I wasn't really sure how I would like it if I was to "smoke" it. I have thought about the brownies and other recipes. Never heard about the "vaporizer". I 'll have to do some more research after work. Thanks for the info thus far, Bill
