  2. HEEEYYYY, it’s good to see ya back. Been thinking about you lately. Don’t know if you remember but we talked some about my oldest moving off to med school a few years ago, she graduated a few weeks ago. We’re moving her to Gainesville FL this weekend where she’ll be doing her residency in the E.R.

  3. Well, how could I not get involved in THIS thread with the recommendation of COWPUC!! As a matter of fact, in the Member Vendor's section of the Forum, I offer a kit that addresses this very issue! Here is the link: Thank you Pucster for the props, and if anyone has any questions about the Needle Shim Mod, or any of my other kits, please feel free to PM me. I am always up for a good chat about these wonderful machines! Earl

  4. I paid the bills as trim carpenter for quite a while. Custom kitchens, coffered ceilings, full room built ins, the whole shebang. After 25 years in the refrigeration world, I dove back into carpentry to start on our "new" house's( built in 1890) library. I went to Harbor Freight and got their Hercules 12" compound sliding miter saw with portable stand, the Hercules 10" portable table saw and ordered the Powertec rolling, folding table saw stand on Amazon and got to work. I have to say, the Harbor Freight tools I just got are so much better than the "professional" equipment I was using 25 years ago. At 1/4 the price we paid for the "pro" tools back then. It's actually ridiculous. They are really not even comparably in quality and performance. So, here is the start of our built in library.

  5. I got a message from a member asking why the site is so dead lately. I don't know for sure but I feel like it's just taking the same course as so many clubs do over the years. We have to be around 15 years old now and many of our core members have gotten older and quit riding. I don't even ride much any longer. I think I took my bike out one time last summer. I keep saying that I'm going to get back into it but just haven't had the desire. I think that all this Covid stuff played at least a small part. Our regional rallies and etc. were a glue that helped hold us all together,. Getting together in person and sharing our stories, working on the bikes, just enjoying one anothers company always seemed to rekindle things. I haven't even had my annual Maintenance Day now for 3 years and that was a highlight, at least for Eileen and I. Not sure we'll have it this year due to the surge of Covid happening again. I know that we need to but just don't know yet. I've not been nearly as active and that pays a big part also, I used to spend a lot of time looking for interesting things to post, tips for our bikes, all kinds of things but just haven't had the time. Starting a new business about 3 years ago has consumed a lot of my time. Now here is something that I haven't told any of you. Those of you who have been around for a long time will remember that I had a bout with cancer a few years ago, about 13 years ago to be more exact. I had Ocular Melanoma and due to the radiation and etc.,, ended up losing 100% of the site in my right eye. I still go back yearly for follow ups. Well my yearly exam was last week and I was dismayed to learn that I again have the cancer. It, luckily, is in the same eye so going blind is not an issue. The fact is though, I don't know yet if it has spread to the liver or anywhere else. I will be going into the hospital late next week for surgery and more radiation. I have appointments sometime over the next week or so for MRIs and etc. to determine if it has spread. I'm trying to not fret over it too much. Just going about my work and will see where things end up. I hate that the site has gotten slow but have no intentions of shutting it down anytime in the near future. I put my heart and sole into this site for a lot of years and I have to do better. In the meantime, I hope that most of you will stick with us, spread the word about the site, and hopefully we can get it moving again. Only time will tell.

  6. After over 17 years, Friday was my last day at Veeder-Root! We laughed, we cried, we ate cupcakes! I chatted with so many people that had become a part of my life. I'm Happy and Scared to death at the same time. I am looking forward to what life puts before me as I join the ranks of the retired. Honestly, there were times that I thought I wouldn't make it, but here I am, on day one of my "New" life. Wish me luck!

  12. Yeh for some reason it had developed an infinity for "U" turns and riding it was a little like trying to keep a miss-trained horses nose out of the grass while riding it. Hey Carl you can count to two now ......Awsome

  15. I've actually never owned a 10/22! I've wanted one of the take down models since they came out, just never pulled the trigger 😉. Closest thing we've got to the 10/22 is Kris' Daisy bolt gun that uses a similar magazine. Here's Daisy and her little family of 22lr siblings.

  23. Hi @larrydr,,, brother I read your post here and it sucked me right in lol. If it were mine doing what you are describing here is what I would do. 1st thing I would do is spit check the headers on cold start up and make sure its hitting on all 4. That being good I would make sure the airbox lid area was clear and not altered from OEM and the air filter was stock OEM and clean. All good there I would check the pipes for blockage,, no mice nest/acorns. All good there I would center stand it, hook a clear hose up to the carb drains one at a time, open the drains one at a time and check the fuel level in the carb bowls to make sure my float(s) were set to proper height. If all looked good at that point I would leave it center standed, grab the breaks and hit hard and spin the wheels to make sure I had no brakes dragging. Check air pressures front and back. All good there I would now pull the carb slides and look VERY closely at the carb slide diaphrams for pin holes, make sure to check under the lip where the diaphrams contact the carb body. All good there is where I would have found myself on a few occasions and here that is. The emulsion tubes the main jets screw into on these side mounted carbs LOVE to oblong so the Metering Rod hanging from the bottom of the slide cant meter properly. Back in my early days of spinning wrenches as a kid at the local Honda shop I used to finish tune new little Honda CT's before they went on the sales floor. That mainly consisted of setting that metering rod to proper height so the bikes would run crisply off bottom end, those little bikes were kinda finicky for proper air/fuel mixture. Those bikes and 95.689 % of the bikes I worked on thru the years had a small "E" clip on the needle to adjust with, our MK1's, I learned early on DO NOT HAVE THAT (I have heard that some of them did,, Canadian bikes maybe - @skydoc_17 may know?). One of my MK1's got so bad that 30 mpg would have been a good day! I tinkered with it by removing the ramp on the needles and by shimming it DOWN with nylon washers from ACE Hardware I was able to get my +42 mpg back,, this would be leaning it out on the bottom. As I recall I ended up dropping the needles 65 thou,, .065. Somewhere back in VR history is a post (with pics I believe) about the whole matter.. I get a chance I will do some digging if you would like. I am almost sure Skydock use to (probably still does, maybe,,, lets see what Earl says if he is still around) offer an actual "kit" for doing what I am talking about. Seriously brother,, THIS is worth a shot before you ditch your scoot!! ALL THE BEST! Puc

  24. Sorry that cancer has again come into your life again, Prayers up and away. I never thought that becoming a member would lead to a path in life that over the years has made for some of the best memories. And the friends that we made that have become part of our family. I have to say is all thanks to you Don for this site. I have sat and thought about all of the great people that have been able to meet, and the gatherings we have had here and it all started with over a set of carbs for a 1983 Venture. Orlin

  25. We are paying $9.89 per gallon of gasoline ...I went out for 103 mile run last night at 65 miles per hour and no high speed throttle events with a full tank and when I got home it was empty / dry .. I have had a couple of professional mechanics check over this 83 to try to improve the mileage and so far not improvement .. One of the guys has worked for Yamaha for 30 years and knows the 83 Venture well ......My 83 is going to be a parts bike after June 17th and I will looking for a different ride ..
