  1. Probably not issue with the pump. Put some fuel in it and see.

  2. This ^^^ This was an adjustment for me moving from the 2,053cc V-twin I used to ride where the power band was at much lower RPMs. This V-4 is much happier at higher revs. Assuming it is running correctly, you will find it has no lack of power once you figure out where the power band is.

  3. Carb synch, plugs and seafoam sound like a solid start to the trouble shooting, also make sure the original owner did not remove the weights on the ends of the handle bars, if those have been removed the bars can get some vibrations in them. As far as lacking get up and go, remember this V-4 like to produce power at high RPMs and both 4th and 5th gears are overdrive gears. If you are tooling along at 65 in 5th gear and try to accelerate quickly it will not respond like a V-twin. If you to get out and pass someone or just want to go faster quickly drop down to 4th or even 3rd and give it some gas. The bike actually performs best in 3rd gear, if you have not tried it, get on the road and while in 3rd gear, give as much gas as you like it may surprise you how quick it is.

  4. Some 'boneheads' get to experience the celebratory occasions more than once, sometimes many times,,,, ask @Saddlebum how I know. And I will not admit to any or all accusations.

  5. Might be enough battery to run the fuel pump but not enough for the starter, so check the voltage, when sitting and when you push the start button. Also check that the emergency switch is turned to run, the kickstand is up, the clutch is pulled.

  6. Now you need to check your battery.

  7. My 83 likes to start, then get the choke applied. Almost sounds like you fouled your spark plugs? One last thing, first start in the spring, sometimes I have to remove the air cleaner, small shot of starting fluid, and away she fires.

  9. It's a fairly big job, to be sure. I removed the tank to protect it. You will have to remove windshield, split the front fairing, pull the inner fairing away, etc. Search the site, there are some instructions on how to do it.

  10. Fast clicking when you first turn the key on is normal. once the float bowls in the carb's are filled to there proper level the clicking should either stop or drop to an occasional click. If my bike has sat for a long spell like over winter I often wait for the clicking to stop or drop off before starting the bike. If the clicking continues for too long then you may have an issue such as fuel line leak. needle valve and/or float stuck in open position or low fuel tank. You say you have one bar left but if the shut off is in normal run position versus being in the reserve position the fuel could be low enough in the tank for the pump to suck air instead of fuel and thus continue running.

  12. Your thinking is spot on. Take half a can of seafoam in a full tank of fuel and take a nice long ride. The sync never hurts anything and throwing a set of us in is a good start on maintenance you know has been accomplished.

  13. Try this link, the bad news is the folks that made leveling links no longer make them, you will need to make your own or find some one who can make them. They work great.

  14. So the start switch was certainly the issue with the no start. Gonna have to source a new one, it’s cleaned and working now. Still stumped on the lack of headlight. I’m getting 1.23v low and 2.21v high beam. Even swapped in a spare bulb. Checked fuse and swapped it too for good measure. Headlight fault doesn’t trigger either but does when bulb is unplugged.

  15. You're in the right spot to learn about it. I've had 4 of the 2nd gens, which is what you have. I had the same bike, bought it new in 08.

  16. The head light not working points to the start button. I ran into that with both my '83 and my '86, though it did not keep me from starting. I'd still bet the starter not engaging and the light being inop. are connected at the start button contacts.

  19. Sally has a stylist who admits that she came home one day to find awesome chunky stew in a plastic container in the fridge. When her mother came home, the stylist thanked her mom for saving some stew for her. Her mother abruptly stated she hadn't made stew. She was eating leftover chunks in gravy dog food. Mmm, Mmm, good.
