well as of fifteen min ago I sold my bike. I could get on it but there was no way I could get back off except fall off. Sad day for me but never going to get better. I will pop in still just not riding anymore.3 points

I machined a lower out of solid brass, polished it up and my youngest boy purchased the rest of the parts online about 2 years ago and he has been chewing up lead for the last few years out in the Cali desert without any issues. I guess he will be able to mount it on his wall in his den without any issues finally! My father taught me the art of machining while smithing guns in our basement over 50 years ago, and if I can put my hands on a metal part, I can duplicate it! It has been tempting to get into the "business", but making motorcycle parts has kept my tree hugging wife a LOT happier. Although my wife has never complained about me owning guns personally, as we have fended off predator's both four legged and two legged over the years as we live in a rather rural area! My take on this is a gun is a tool, like a hammer or a kitchen knife. It's not the tool that causes the issue, it's the person handling the tool. We kill more people with auto accidents than we do with guns, and we don't ban cars! Of course this whole debate is not based on logic. And because I am a logical person, I sometimes get confused when people suggest that an unarmed society would be oh so much safer. At that point we are no longer people, we're SHEEP! Easy pickin's for the wolves in this world. My thoughts, for what they are worth. Earl3 points

Trina and I was headed for a day out in Oxford Alabama about 45 miles from our home and about 10 miles from our house we seen a Harley in the medium with a bunch of people around and there was two vehicles stopped. I passed on by but was telling the wife that the bike might not be ridable and we wasn't that far from home so I turned around and when we got there the automobiles had left and there was five bikes sitting on the side of the road I pulled up and asked the guy if the rider was alright and did they need me to go get my trailer. He said it just happened and the guy was going to see if it would crank so we spoke a minute and I found out they were from Alexander city which is about 40 miles in the opposite direction but Trina just gave me that look like help if you can so I told the guy we were just out and about and didn't mind hauling it. Well the bike fired right up and with plastic broken and hanging off the bike he pulls it up on the road and Hollered at the guy I was talking with to get on his **** bike and lets go. The one guy had told me that the guy took the curve to fast and the road was wet so he ended up in the grass and was not hurt but that the bike flipped twice and from the looks of it tore it up pretty bad. He hit the bike in front of him but that bike didn't go down. But that just reminded me of how fast something like that can happen so please be careful while riding and slow down on wet road and roads you are not familiar with.1 point

I use the same bulb as RDawson and have the same results. I have experienced the same as saddlebum in the past, but LED technology has come a long way recently. The bulb from Superbright LEDs is truly a plug and play solution that works incredibly well with the OEM housing and reflector. I had such good results that I also upgraded the bulbs on both my '10 Suburban and my '10 GMC Canyon with similarly spectacular results. Unlike the LED replacement bulbs of just a few years ago, these focus like the halogens and have a distinct cutoff so that they can be aimed properly so you won't blind oncoming drivers. You don't get all the light scatter that the older LED replacement bulbs were notorious for.1 point

Hey Chris, There is an area between the "V" of the cylinders called the "Twinkie" where engine oil and coolant come VERY close together. This is where the engine oil is cooled by the coolant. If that "O"Ring has failed, then oil and water will mix together at this one point. Because of the design of this "heat exchanger" area, you will usually see oil in the coolant, NOT coolant in the oil. If you find no coolant in the oil, I would have a close look at the Twinkie, better yet change the "O"Ring for the Twinkie and see if the this solves the issue. Obviously it's not called a "Twinkie" in the repair manual, But there is a section on the R/R of the "O"Ring in there. If you aren't seeing any coolant dripping from the weep hole of the water pump, you're looking in the wrong place. Earl1 point

I know the feeling. My bike has been gone for 2 years now. I still miss it and this site is still stuck with me.1 point

I'm pretty sure you'll need to pull the radiator to get to the fan and possibly the thermo switch. Before going through all that, 1st step is check the fan motor fuse (Located behind left side cover, fuse #2). Next, remove the lower cowlings and trace the fan wire to the connector on the lower left (shifter) side of the bike. You are looking for a two-wire connector (Blue & Black). I used my battery tender and crudely rigged a couple pieces of wire to feed 12v to the fan to make sure it will run when given power (blue = +, black = -) If both of those are good, there's also a noise filter between the thermoswitch and the fan. I'm not 100% certain where that is, but probably down in the same area. Test to make sure that its good. Once you find the filter, check to make sure you have continuity to chassis ground from the neg terminal, on the fan side. If all are good, thermo switch is next. Its at the top of the radiator, so you might be able to perform some wrenching gymnastics to remove it with the rad in place. Good luck and let us know how you progress.1 point

I’m so sorry to read this @rbig1 you’re loss though reaffirms my decision to get back in the saddle as I did last season. Gotta do what we can when we can, because tomorrow is never a guarantee.1 point

My 89 runs Shinkos just fine. The Tourmaster 230s. My RSV has a 777 in front and a 230 in rear. My 777HD in the rear got a nail so all we could find to replace at @cowpuc's home town was the 230. Still running fine after 3 years. BTW, I learned a great deal from Puc about changing tires! He's good!1 point

With my 1st Gen MK2 I actually went back to a PIAA hi output Halogen bulb after trying three different LED's. Although the LED was brighter I found it lacked projection, proper focus and definition of road objects with 90% of the light cast being directly in front allowing for much less reaction time. It is my belief that the reflector design is not well suited to the proper focusing of the LED bulb. On the other hand if you can replace the entire headlight with a self contained LED sealed beam as you would be able too with the MK1 83-85 and other bikes that use a sealed beam or were the headlight can be replace with a complete sealed beam unit, it would be very effective since the LED and reflector are designed to work together. some examples of sealed beam LED headlights. https://www.grote.com/white-light/forward-lighting/led-sealed-beam-headlights/1 point

I took a look at the calendar and see that the weekend of July 23 to 25 is open. It can be hot and a little muggy, We have some nice big shade trees to set under or I do know of some nice shady roads to take a ride on. It will be good to have some old friends here and some new ones. We didnt get to have a get together last year. And sure missed it. Orlin1 point
