  1. Castrol is a top quality oil I have used it for years on most all my engines from trucks to bikes. It is actually one of my preferred oils.

  3. I have a 2001 Yamaha XVZ13TF . This winter I installed a Garmin Zumo XT on the bike. The Zumo when connected to my iPhone’s Bluetooth was useful for the mapping app on the Zumo, but not for any audio, YET. I then added a Bluetooth receiver to the bike which also connects to the Zumo. Now I can listen to my iPhones Music, SiriusXM, iHeartRadio, etc. thru the bikes headset or speakers. Adding the Bluetooth receiver also allowed me to receive and play, or read, text messages and voicemails on the Zumo. Without the Bluetooth receiver the Zumo will not accept these messages from the iPhone. I was not particularly interested in receiving messages as it is a distraction, but it is quite simple to click the notification and play them. To install the Bluetooth receiver I removed the front of the fairing and then unplugged the aux jack cable near the cassette player from the receiver amplifier. I then plugged the Bluetooth adapter into the aux input of the receiver, no adapters needed, very simple. For power I spliced the Bluetooth power wires into the 12v aux power port in the fairing. The adapter I purchased is an “NVX Universal Bluetooth Adapter - Waterproof Audio Receiver - Auto, Marine”. Spring has finally arrived and I took my first ride of the year with the new Garmin and Bluetooth and they worked wonderfully.

  4. After moving to the new forum software, the membership expirations no longer work. Only people who became supporting members under this new software will get renewals. I am trying to send out emails to all existing members but please check your records and see when your memberships expire. If you need to renew, you do it by clicking on "Store" in the menu bar and you can renew there as you always did. After that, you will get your usual notices. If you get an email about your renewals, please let me know if you question it and I can check my records manually.

  5. Not sure how good these things are, but if they work, getting blue tooth on our vintage bikes with cassette decks could not get any simpler. https://www.amazon.ca/Universal-Bluetooth-Audio-Cassette-Receiver/dp/B06XDDHXRN/ref=sr_1_35?dchild=1&keywords=Marine-rated+Bluetooth®+adapter&qid=1617972359&sr=8-35 https://www.amazon.ca/Arsvita-Bluetooth-Cassette-Receiver-Adapter/dp/B07QSW6KNY/ref=pd_sbs_9?pd_rd_w=PLWOq&pf_rd_p=4dc33e2e-16b5-4e12-aab9-e86d5748e0cb&pf_rd_r=NB7ANZBMWNTS77A8KT8V&pd_rd_r=fc4da1f1-14d4-4462-85e5-72cb354f79a5&pd_rd_wg=R4aR9&pd_rd_i=B07QSW6KNY&psc=1

  8. I remember now...! That little wire was put in there to help "direct and drive" the oil to come up thru that spinning bolt head as the center of the crankshaft is open and a bit pressurized with oil flow. IF that pesky memory serves me somewhat right...

  13. To add to above..... Pilots know the most dangerous time for newbies is after a few hundred hours of flight time. We become complacent. Feeling sure in our knowledge. The same is true for riding. We become relaxed and that can be dangerous. Glad you took the course. Consider taking the next, advanced course after you have some hours behind you. And if you begin to feel complacent about your riding skills, re-evaluate! Stay safe. Enjoy the ride! Practice, practice, practice (thanks Cowpuc)!! Welcome to the wind in your face club!

  15. Folks, here is something that you need to know., I don't like the way it works but have not found a way to change it. Once you subscribe, you will be automatically charged and renewed after one year. I have never done automatic renewals before and personally don't like them for several reasons but some people actually do like it. The point is, if you DON'T want your membership to automatically renew after your year is up, you need to go back after you subscribe and turn it off. You do that by clicking on "Store" then "My Details" and then "PayPal Subscriptions". There you can cancel it. That does not refund your money for subscribing and your membership will still be valid but it won't automatically renew after a year.

  17. Hey Cowpuc, I apologize in advance if I take this thread a bit off topic but I wanted to touch on the extent I went to, to try and solve this issue with the overheating stators. I actually machined ONE "modified" stator cover from 6061 T6 Aluminum Billet. It increased the oil volume in the pan by 1.1 quarts and moved the face of the stator cover almost 2 inches away from the stator. It worked great and allowed me to put a stator that came close to 100 amps of output in my 87'VR! You would think that this would be a win/win for the First Gens. Heck, you could run a Toaster Oven on your bike if you wanted to! Well the problem was that cover machined from billet would cost $800.00 (MY cost for material and machine time) not to mention the 100 amp stator was another $250.00. (again, actual cost) Historically speaking, I have found that First Gen. owners are a bit "light in the pocketbook" when it comes to spending money on parts for their bikes. After the excitement of solving the issue wore off, I found myself wondering how many First Gen. owners would actually spring for a $1200. stator upgrade. Of course the answer was "NOT Many"! So the tooling and fixture went into a box I have set aside for projects that I would NEVER be able to sell to the general population of First Gen. owners, and I stopped getting High Output stators wound by my local vendor. I went to a lot of trouble to offer a solution to the low amperage stator offered by Yamaha, only to find out that there is no way I could sell the darn things! I now fully understand why Yamaha puts such a wimpy stator in our bikes. I wanted to share this info with the community, and to let you know how much this broke my heart NOT to be able to offer this upgrade to solve this issue. Rant over, now back to your regularly scheduled programming! Earl

  19. There is also a kit that you can install that results in more oil spilling over the stater to help cool it. I may be able to dig up the part number later for you as I have one in my garage somewhere just need to remember which drawer it is in.

  20. First off, Thanks Pucster for the props! The reason the part number has changed for the MKII is that the stator was upgraded for the MKII model, and the MKI had been discontinued in production as of the time of the upgrade. Physically, the MKII stator will replace the MKI stator. The rectifier housings are the same for both MKI and MKII Models. Now this only pertains to the stock Yamaha Stators and R/R's. Aftermarket is a different animal. There was a time when I was having High Output Stators wound locally, and they produced incredible amperage! the problem was that the stator cover was so close to the actual stator that the engine oil could not keep the stator cool enough to keep it from burning itself up in the warmer states! (Cali, Texas, Fla. for example) They ran just fine in Boston, or Canada but not down south. I'm still running one in my 87'VR to this day. (I live in Pennsylvania) So beware of aftermarket sellers of "High Output" stators. No doubt they will make the juice, but how long they last is another question. Second Gen. bikes don't seem to have as much of a problem with the "juiced up" stators. (More oil volume in the stator area) Earl

  21. So see pics to show everything all put back together. Went for a ride and no noise and no observable wind difference. But I can finally see behind me. The rods are Stainless steel tube. and I extended it about 60mm Let me know what you think.
