Shredded lower cable wrap

Anyone else have this problem? The black insulation of the lower coiled cable that comes off the helmets at each end near the connectors is splitting revealing the colored wiring inside. Everything still works fine, but I have had to wrap each with electrical tape. I am going to buy new cables but don't want to just repeat the problem. Is there a vendor that has a better cable? Should I make a modification that would better protect this area? Is Edsets a good place to buy these items?
