I'd use YamaLube.. Funny though, I'll put Amsoil in the VStar but not in the Venture.. Couldn't tell you why though.. doesn't feel like it would need it..

SeaFoam in the gas yes.. but putting it in the engine JUST before the oil change, running it just long enough to heat it up properly is supposed to help get rid of the gunk.. though I have never done it, I have heard of many who have without any bad report..

However..

You can change to any other brand of oil as long as it is formulated for Motorcycle use, in other words, don't use anything that says (energy conserving) on it because it has additives that are not good for wet clutches.

Stick with the Yamaha brand if that makes you feel better, it is good oil, but if you want to go with other brands, or Amsoil, you can do that safely.

If you feel the engine has been severely mistreated and there is evidence of gunk, like junk on the underside of the oil fill plug etc or the sight glass is all covered up, then maybe consider the treatement, but otherwise, all oils today use detergents that should keep the inside of your engine just fine, and you should NOT need to use a cleaner like seafoam in the oil.

I would say change the oil, and run it for a few hundred miles, if the oil still looks decent in the sight glass, then you are fine.

ALL oil will have a dark appearance when draining out, at least I have never drained any oil from an engine with any normal miles on the oil, that didn't have a dark appearance. THis comes from combustion byproducts that WILL get in the oil no matter what you do. This doesn't mean your engine is gunked up, it means the oil is doing its job,

My riding buddies were talking about changing the oil on their Harleys at church the other day. One of them just bought a new bike this year and it was his first oil change. He told me that the oil and the filter cost him 100.00 to do the job. I didn't think to ask him what kind of oil, but even with synthetic that seems to be a bit high. Has anyone ever heard of this kind of maintenance costs? The real interesting part of the conversation was that he said he decided to change it when the oil went so low the bike started making noises. Where'd the oil go? My Venture has never lost a drop of oil any time as far as I know. One of the other guys said it was burned out the exhaust. I know those bikes are configured differently but that still doesn't seem right to me. Guess I have a lot to learn even at my age!

I have ran synthetic in the Venture but didn't notice so much difference that I switched back to regular oil. I change my oil every 3000 miles regardless, so it didn't seem prudent for me to spend the extra on syn. Even so, I am so glad I have a Venture and my oil changes are inexpensive by comparison it looks like. I do like the Harley's though. Maybe one day I'll get one since the last one I had was back in the mid-70's and there are some major improvements since then.

Please don't take this as a slam on a different brand of bike. It is not. I just thought the whole conversation was interesting and wanted to share.

You all ride safe and if you get near the middle of Ohio sometime look me up. I'm just east of Columbus.

You shouldn't need to run the Seafoam in the crankcase, not enough miles on it to really start sludging up the engine. Yamalube is good oil, if you want to use it again, do so. You can change to any oil you want to as long as you dont use the energy conserving like mentioned in the previous thread. I have used Shell Rotella T in the majority of my bikes without any issues. Right now I am using Mobil 1 Synthetic for motorcycles and I'm happy with it.

The last time I changed my oil it cost me 52 dollars and some change.I use semi synthetic Golden Spectro oil and a Yamaha filter.Of course that was stealership price.Next time I,m going to use Yamaha's oil.It is only about a dollar or so cheaper right now, but the guy at the shop said that Golden Spectro was going to go up 1.95$ a bottle. So that would be almost three dollars more a bottle !I,m not sure if there is much difference between them and I,m sure they both are good .At three dollars a bottle more for Golden Spectro,Yamaha's oil seems like it is worth a try.As for using Rotella oil I,m not sure.I use it with no problems in a 475hp Cat diesel engine.Piece of mine justified or not sometimes cost more.So the jury is still out for now.

"I use Rotella T 15w40 and a Purolater PureOne PL14610 oil filter.

Oil change costs me 16 bucks."

Is the Rotella that much cheaper than Mobil1?:confused24: I use 4T racing synthetic @ $8.50 (+/-) and Wix filter. I have right at $40 in an oil change.

jrcain32, A Rotella oil change will cost you almost the same as 1qt. of 4T Racing. I pay $9.30 for 1 gal. jug at Sams. Auto stores about $ 10.50 Been using it for six years in my 99. Still hasn't blown up. Also use Purolator filter $2.99

Why do your friends want to change the oil in their Harley's at Church? I guess they feel like their Harley's need all the help they can get!
