johnny-canuck Posted September 7, 2008 #1 Posted September 7, 2008 I posted this earlier but it didn't seem to go through. So, I'll try again. I have the Yamaha headset for 3/4 helmets. They are 1 1/2 years old and I now have a loose connection in my helmet. It is where the cord from the bike attaches to the side of the helmet. I most times now have to jiggle the connection to get the mic and speakers to work. I haven't tried pulling it apart as I figure that will be a winter project. It is a really poor design as the cord and sticks out at the bottom of the helmet. (I really don't like Yamaha accessories) Has anyone had this problem and how did you fix it? I ride an 07 Midnight. Thanks, John
sarges46 Posted September 7, 2008 #2 Posted September 7, 2008 I've got to ask....isnt the Yamaha headset actually a J+M? My headset has developed a bit of a short in it as well whenever I turn my head to the left..... The price is cheap to replace them from Wingthings...(relatively anyway). 60 bucks for the cord and headset...thats not top of the line but from what I;ve read its not much use wasting your money on the top of the line as the sound isnt much better.
Freebird Posted September 7, 2008 #3 Posted September 7, 2008 If it's the cable, you can get replacement cables from http://www.sierra-mc.com If it is the connection in the headset though, I've never seen them successfully repaired. Not saying that it can't be done but I've had no luck.
royalstarjac Posted September 7, 2008 #4 Posted September 7, 2008 My cords short out pretty regularly. The upper cord on the J&M is a pretty poor design since it plugs it horizontally which puts it under stress at all times when riding. They do have a 2 yr warranty though and they will replace them. I zip tie my cord to my mike boom which seems to help some in reducing the strain.-Jack
johnny-canuck Posted September 7, 2008 Author #5 Posted September 7, 2008 I just checked and they are J&M. The short seems to be in the connector on the side of the helmet as I have to move it around to get it to work. I checked with my dealer, who checked with the Yamaha rep for the area and he basically said, "too bad, so sad". I'm not impressed with the attitude of Yamaha Canada.
V7Goose Posted September 7, 2008 #6 Posted September 7, 2008 I can and have repaired the J&M cords and helmet jacks. It is not easy, as the rubber coating often has to be slit and pealed off to access the wires. Then the wires and pins are VERY small, so takes a bit of finesse to work on. Putting it all back together is the toughest part, and it doesn't always look quite as neat as it started. The problems are not always broken wires - the female pins can get worn out too, causing the plug to cut in and out just from poor contact. There are things that can be done for that too. But I can fix them, and will do so for free. All I ask is that you cover the cost of postage. Within US, that is no more than $5. If you want to send it to me, just send me a PM and I'll give you my address. I strongly suggest you send the entire headset AND both cords, as the problems are not always where you think (and often in multiple places). When they first start cutting out, fiddling with the cords to pinpoint the problem or try and get them working again often causes more problems! Goose
johnny-canuck Posted September 7, 2008 Author #7 Posted September 7, 2008 I emailed J&M earlier today and got a reply. I'm impressed. They wanted more info, so I'll wait to see what they say before I do anything else. Thanks for all the replies. I may be getting back. John
johnny-canuck Posted September 13, 2008 Author #8 Posted September 13, 2008 I contacted J&M and got a reply back from John the Prez. Long story short, he is going to replace the cable. No hassles and very easy to work with. So much for Yamaha service. I would definitely go J&M again. John
Eddie Fulmer Posted September 13, 2008 #9 Posted September 13, 2008 I think my pins are worn out in the helmut jack. I ordered 2 new sets yesterday. I plan on taking the jack apart and seeing what the problem is. I sprayed contact cleaner into the jack and it helped for a while but now I'm right back where I started. I like the headsets from wingstuff.com. Their $60 unit is as good as any I've used. Good luck.
