matt73ander Posted September 6, 2008 #1 Posted September 6, 2008 anybody know a good v-star tech site, so far the ones I've found seem pretty excited to be able to change their own oil. My buddy's 1100 got some serious elec issues. I think we might have to replace the enitre main wiring harness but that sounds pretty spendy so were trying to pin out each cable. need a better wiring digram for the cables themselves.
pegscraper Posted September 6, 2008 #2 Posted September 6, 2008 Hey, changing the oil on the V Star 1100 is a royal PIA. Yamaha ought to be drop kicked for that design. You didn't mention what boards you knew about. I know of such a board on Delphi. There are a few good technical types there. http://forums.delphiforums.com/yamaha1100/start My wife also rides one of these and I have a shop manual. What sort of problems is he having?
matt73ander Posted September 6, 2008 Author #3 Posted September 6, 2008 i really hadn't found any boards that i thought were worth mentioning, can't rember the names anyhow. Our problem began with what we thought was just a starter relay. hit the starter button and just hear the relay click. ordered a new relay and while waiting on it to show up found the starter bolts were bent, also the bike seemed to turn over it you were sitting on it in neutral, kickstand up,and the clutch in. mounted starter straight and put in the new relay. hit the starter button and a wire fried in the wiring harness from the turn signal switch to the steering colum. what we think happened is somewhere in the main harness under the seat the starter circuit shorted to the ground wire which is connected in the harness somewhere to the wire that fried. Right now its all guess work but it does explain why it acted differnt when you were sitting on it. pretty much it looks like it's gonna be a long night.
dray Posted September 6, 2008 #4 Posted September 6, 2008 (edited) bending the starter bolts on the Vstar is a major problem with them if you dont start them right now for what you need you may find at this spot its on the 1100 site and then click on webpages at the top of the page it will take you to this page http://www.sloneservices.com/SilverBack/VStar1100-FAQ.htm just poking around in there and found this its has a wire digram for the 1100 that you can blow up http://www.sloneservices.com/SilverBack/VStar1100-FAQ-08.htm#Cig-Litr-Outlet hope it helps Dray Edited September 6, 2008 by dray

george_park Posted September 21, 2008 #6 Posted September 21, 2008 I have to give these guys a huge shout out as they have always gone the extra mile for me - even the support folks calling me at home to make sure my install was going ok - and they have a great tech support site: http://www.maxairengineering.com/garage/ or go to the main site and click on "support". These guys make kits for the VStars (Road Stars and some other carb-based bikes) that I wished they would make for the RS. They won't because there is not enough demand but I have their kit on an '06 VStar 1100 and the before and after are like night and day - 18 more hp (on the dyno) and 75 in fifth without feeling like I need 6th gear. Because they have people taking their bikes apart - their carbs apart - they get a lot of people spinning some serious wrenches, folks that really need support. IMHO this is one of the best and probably least tapped resources for VStar (or Roadie) owners. The kit is the best money I ever spent on my VStar. Period. I went there for help long before I decided to get the kit, try it out - and for all you RS owners hit Lee up to make one of these kits for the RS - any gen ;-). Regards, gp
